The Concours d’Elegance has its roots in 17th cen-tury France, when the aristocracy would parade their horse-drawn carriages through the parks of Paris. With the advent of the automobile, Concours d’Elegance events evolved into competitions be-tween automobile manufacturers, custom coach-builders, and owners, whose vehicles were judged on the beauty of their design.The Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John’s,

one of the world’s premier classic car shows, con-tinues this tradition of exhibiting prestigious col-lector cars and also offers an automotive art ex-hibition, a vintage car auction, Mode du Concours (a fashion presentation) and many other social events.For its first 32 years the Concours was held at Oak-

land University’s Meadow Brook Hall, the historic home of Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of automo-tive pioneer John Dodge. In 2011 this world-class event moved to the beau-

tiful 200 acre grounds of the Catholic Archdiocese’s former seminary, the fabulous Inn at St. John’s.With over 300 vintage and classic automobiles

showing of 1966-1969 Ford GT40's — Ford's su-percar built in Slough, England for three of its model series (the MKI, MKII, and MKIII), and with the model MKIV, built locally at the Ford plant in Wixom in 1967.“Our 38th annual Concours promises to be one of

SHOWINGSDetroit's Lost Cultural Venues at UD MercyThe Library of the Uni-

versity of Detroit Mercy, McNichols Campus is ex-hibiting a collection of ephemera and other ma-terials that pay tribute to the Lost Cultural Venues of Detroit: Social Spaces and Playgrounds, now through September 10. These long-gone places include bars, ballrooms, art galleries, coffee houses, nightclubs, dives and spaces for after-hours jam sessions. These once-important

music and gathering spaces venues are now just slim memories of a vital time now gone forever. Some of these same structures have been converted to other venues, some sit empty, and, unfortunately, still oth-ers have been demolished.Through books, original

pieces and copies of origi-nal material, the exhibit travels back in time, listing and remembering the plac-es that Greater Detroit has lost.There are remembrances

of buildings destroyed by freeway expansion in the early 1960’s, such as The Black Bottom/Paradise Valley/Hastings Street neighborhood, and other exhibition ephemera from outdoor festivals and block parties, especially those that were held annually.The collection, primarily

concerned with lost Detroit venues does, however, take some notice of the sub-urbs. Also, while the focus is on lost music venues, some mention will also be made of spaces that have enriched Greater Detroit’s cultural life.The exhibition is open

Ah… We have been hav-ing some heatwaves, which allow me to go outside and soak up the sun. This being said, air conditioning still comes in handy with that kind of weather. This week is blessed with

three vocal/piano per-formances at Kerrytown House – on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, at 8 p.m. Starting with songs that we like to sing (Wed), it goes into Chemins de l'amour by Couperin (Thu) and ends with works of Kurt Weill and Sondheim (Fri). Many singers partici-pate in these programs. I have gone to these events in former years and they are truly enticing. Soprano Jane Schoon-

maker Rodgers is the gen-eral director for these pro-grams and pianist Kevin Bylsma is the music direc-tor. Schoonmaker Rodgers is an associate professor of voice at Bowling Green University. I have heard Bylsma in a

number of former recitals. He is an accomplished pia-nist and vocal coach; well known in the Midwest for his work in art song, op-era and oratorio; served as music director of the Department of Community Programs for the Michigan Opera Theatre from 1993–07. Other music directing credits include the Lyric Chamber Ensemble of De-troit and the Papagena Opera Company of Ann Ar-bor; Bylsma has appeared throughout the United States, Canada and Europe as an organist, pianist and accompanist; most recent-ly he has appeared in mas-ter classes and recitals with soprano Diana Soviero and

mezzo-soprano Irina Mi-shura; He currently serves as assistant organist at the historic Mariners’ Church in Detroit.On Thursday-Saturday,

Lions Training Camp

It’s season three for Jim Caldwell and one would think the hot tem-peratures lately also apply to the Lions’ head coach’s seat. Follow-ing the team's dismal 2015 season, although the second-half was a big improvement, Caldwell chat-ted with the media before the hard work begins in earnest as Lions Training Camp opens on Friday, July 29 in Allen Park. Following are Caldwell’s paraphrased remarks:On his message to the team before they took time off: “Yeah, we talk about all the perils that can hap-pen to you when you’re away from the facility…But the big thing be-sides that, is coming back in great shape and to carryover from what they’ve learned; study their notes because in the fall everything goes a lot faster.”On if Lions players need to step up in the receiving corps: “The devel-opment and maturity is something that you look for. You talk about

the receiver spot and that’s cer-tainly the case. TJ Jones did a little bit for us last year. We expect him to be better. Corey (Fuller) was one of those guys that hurt his foot, so we’ll see what happens when he gets back. Golden’s (Tate) role, even though he’s been in our sys-tem, the system’s changed a little bit. “Typically, you still see some ma-turity and a rise in production and things of that nature, and Marvin’s (Jones) learning. ‘Mornings at Seven’ Delights at the Purple Rose

A rather dysfunctional f a m i l y i n a l l i t s complexities – that is the subject of Mornings at Seven at the Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea. Four aging sisters with their husbands and children live within spitting distance of each other in a small midwestern town in 1938. Family relationships can often be complicated, and proximity does seem to make them more strained.Cora (Ruth Crawford)

and her husband Thor (Richard McWilliams) live next door to Ida (Franette Liebow) and Carl (Hugh Maguire). They even share a back yard. The third sister is Aaronetta (Laural M e r l i n g t o n ) , w h o m they call Ari. Ari is the quintessential spinster, or old maid. Ari has lived with Cora and Thor and has for years. You can imagine the tensions that have arisen over the years. Ida and Carl have a son,

Homer (Rusty Mewha) who at 39 still lives at home but has been engaged to Myrt le (Rhiannon Ragland) for seven years and dated her before that for five years. Mustn’t rush the boy. The big excitement in the first act is Homer’s bringing Myrtle home for the first time to introduce her to his parents, aunts, and uncles.The fourth sister, who

lives just down the road, is Esther (Susan Craves). She is married to a self-professed intellectual David (Tom Whalen); David has demanded that Essie not visit her sisters, lest they bring her down to their mediocrity. Essie

refuses to obey this order and is consequently told she must live on the second story of their house while David will live on the first story. Charming.This all sounds rather

serious, but the play is full of humor. Many of the lines and situations are very funny and the audience cannot help but feel a genuine fondness for these fine folks. The characters are full of idiosyncrasies and are quite charming. The acting is uniformly

superior. All nine members of the cast are Equity actors and their professionalism shines through. It is a true ensemble effort and there is not a weak link. The director emphasizes this point in staging the curtain call. All the actors come out for curtain call at once and make a joint bow.The set for this play

is exquisite with great attention to detail. It was interesting to me that from my seat to the side I could see that the floor of an upstage porch was decorated to look like tile

flooring; very few in the audience would have been able to see that, but the designer attended to that small detail. And the costumes are

spot on for the 1930's. The lines of the dresses, the hats, even the shoes are perfect.Founder of the Purple

Rose Jeff Daniels has said, “I had a dream to make new American plays – written by Michigan folks – available to theatergoers.” This play certainly fills that bill. Mornings at Seven is written by Paul Osborn, who grew up in Kalamazoo and graduated from the University of Michigan. He drew on his family and neighbors for inspiration for many of the characters. Mornings at Seven runs
