in the U.S. will develop this disease every 70 seconds. There is no known cause or cure, but we do know your chance of developing Alzheimer’s increases as you age. Even though the first case of Alzheimer’s was diagnosed more than a century ago, 90 percent of what we know about the disease has been learned in the last 15 years. We are closer than ever to important breakthroughs, and sustaining the current pace of discovery is vital to advancing the next generation of treatments and effective prevention strategies. It’s also why you should get involved today!

Spring is the time for rebirth and renewal and I ask that you “spring” into action and join the fight to end Alzheimer’s disease. Whether you are thinking “Purple” and spreading the Alzheimer’s Association’s color in your workplace or neighborhood, educating yourself and others by attending a course on how to maintain Your Brain or through building your own team of Memory Walkers in your community

for the 2009 memory Walk, the time to ACT is now.

Please reach out and make a difference today by contacting the Greater Dallas Chapter at 1-800-272-3900 or by visiting www.AlzDallas.org to learn more about upcoming events and opportunities, and more importantly, how you can make a difference.

Many Thanks,

he Greater Dallas Chapter held the 2009 RJ Price Caregiver Conference on March 25 at Fellowship Bible Church in Dallas.

More than 300 family caregivers and professionals attended to hear Naomi Feil, creator of Validation Therapy, author of numerous books and producer of award-winning documentaries, present “Validation Therapy: Making Connections Throughout the Stages.” Feil captivated her audience with her presentation of state-of-the-art inter-ventions for disoriented elderly people.

Conference attendees also heard from Natalie Davis, who presented “Making Connections with Activities,” and Mary Norman, M.D., who addressed the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

During the luncheon, the Greater Dallas Chapter presented the 2008 RJ Roper Caregiver Program Awards to eight stellar individuals who work with Alzheimer’s and dementia patients as professional caregivers.

The eight winners were selected from a competitive pool of 25 amazing nominees. The luncheon and the awards served to enhance the importance of this year’s theme “Making Connections.” The day closed with a moving presentation by Wendy Fenn, M.Div., on “Connections in the Later Stages.”

F or the past several years, Mr. K has been living the “for better or for worse” part of his marriage vows in ways he never imagined. As his wife’s Alzheimer’s disease has

progressed, he has found what it means to live those wordsday in and day out.

“If someone told me when we were first married that I would be changing my wife’s wet or dirty clothes, I’d have said they were nuts,” said Mr. K, “But now, it is something that needs to be done, so I do it.”

Managing medications, tracking finances on a fixed income, doing the laundry, cooking and cleaning are just a few of the things he does since he and his wife began to travel the long, uphill road of Alzheimer’s. His humor helps him cope.

“We made a deal when we got married. She never had to change the oil or work on the car as long as I never had to do housework,” he said, “I got the short end of that stick now, didn’t I?”

Despite his humor, December of 2008 found Mr. and Mrs. K

in a tight spot. They live in a modest home where he is her only full-time caregiver. Mrs. K’s Alzheimer’s causes a number of disturbing and “mess-producing” behaviors, such as emptying drawers onto the floor, dumping out boxes of cereal and piling clothes in the living room. With some reluctance, Mr. K accepted help through the Dallas Chapter’s Respite Assistance Program, which covers $125 per month of in-home respite care for Mrs. K. But even with help, he was unable to find the time, energy and freedom to clean their home, and that is where Judy Jarmon Diamond stepped in.

Judy, a member and former president of the Greater Dallas Chapter Board of Directors, is a long-time supporter of the Alzheimer’s Association. More significant, however, was the time she spent caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. Every year during the holidays, she asks for anonymous information on Alzheimer’s families with particular needs in order to give second mile gifts through the Association. One such family included in the 2008 list was the K’s.

Dianna Niemann-Harris, Manager of family services for Cooke, Fannin and Grayson counties, submitted the K family’s name.

Can Chicken Protect Your Brain?According to a new study referenced in Prevention Magazine, a little publicized nutrient found in chicken seems to prevent memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s disease. When researchers gave mice with dementia nicotinamide (a form of B3 or niacin), they performed memory tasks as if they’d never had the disease. The vitamin also boosted memory in normal mice. Scientists believe B3 lowers levels of a protein that contributes to tangles which can clog brain cells and lead to Alzheimer’s.

did you know?

According to the Association’s 2009 Facts and Figures Report, healthcare costs for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and for people who have other forms of dementia are more than three times higher than costs for older Americans who are not afflicted.

According to Healthwise, regularly reading, playing cards and other games, working crossword puzzles, going to museums, actively watching television, listening to the radio and doing other social activities may help you avoid symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Avocado Salad Ingredients:4 very thin slices red onion, separated into rings

2 oranges

2 avocados

3 tsp olive oil

2 tsp chopped fresh mint

1 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice (about ½ small lemon)

Preparation:1. Soak onion in small bowl of ice water to crisp.

Peel oranges with knife, removing all the white pith. Cut crosswise into thin wheels.

2. Pit, peel and slice avocados and put in medium bowl. Drain onion well and add to bowl along with oranges, olive oil, mint, lemon juice and salt. Toss to coat.

Did you know that avocados are a healthy addition to your diet at any time of the year? Avocados are a good source of folate or folic acid. A low dietary intake of folate has been associated with increasing levels of homocysteine, a risk factor linked with coronary heart disease and stroke. High homocysteine levels have also been associated with an increased likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Next time you are in the produce section of your grocery store, pick up an avocado to add to salads, burgers and sandwiches. This brain food is rich and creamy, as well as heart smart.

(Makes 4 servings. Recipe easily can be doubled. Related recipes can be found at prevention.com/avocado.)

Bank of America Local Hero Gives Awardto Alzheimer’s AssociationFOOD for Thought

The Local Heroes Program recognizes five worthy individuals in 45 communities who work diligently on a

local cause and inspire others to get involved.Van Dyke, chosen as one of five local

heroes in the Metroplex for 2008, has volunteered with the Alzheimer’s Association since 2006.

Leanne Hall, Manager of Volunteer & Outreach Services, said the Association nominated Van Dyke because she inspires others who are affected by the disease. “She’s so honest and candid,” Hall said. “She’s talking about the disease in a way other people aren’t.”

Hall said Van Dyke has a high level of commitment to the Association and has made a tremendous impact during her three years as a volunteer. After being diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s at the age of 52, Van Dyke decided to get involved with the Association.

Van Dyke requested the donation be used to advance Trailblazers, an eight-week education and support program geared toward early stage Alzheimer’s. She has been involved with Trailblazers since before it was an official program, acting as a focus group participant in its early days.

Van Dyke said the work the Association does is invaluable to those preparing for and dealing with the disease. “So many people stereotype Alzheimer’s as someone in their 80s and 90s,” she said. She hopes the donation can help the young Trailblazers

program grow. Van Dyke said the program is a great way to connect with

others and share experiences.“Trailblazers is a valuable chance to sit and talk to people

about what we’re feeling and what we’re doing,” she said. “It’s a much-needed support group.”

To learn more about Traiblazers and other support groups, contact Sydney Farrier at 214-540-2407.

When Pat van Dyke was awarded $5,000 to be given to the nonprofit organization of her choice, she knew exactly where the money should go. After being named a Bank of America Local Hero in November 2008, van Dyke directed her award to be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association for its Trailblazers program.

continued from p. 5 “At every support group Mr. K mentioned the state of his home and how troubled his wife would be if she were able to realize how their place looked,” Neimann-Harris said, “It seemed to weigh heavy on his mind and was a source of unneeded guilt and concern.”

Remembering her own experiences as a caregiver, Judy Jarmon Diamond extended her generosity by paying for a thorough house cleaning for the Ks, as well as an additional $300 of respite care. Mr. K fought back tears when he learned of this generous gift. It has allowed Mr. K to increase the number of hours their care provider spends in their home, which has afforded him more time and energy to keep their home in order.

For the past year, Mr. K has found relief by voicing his feelings, fears and frustrations in an Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group.

“You people keep me alive and even a bit sane,” he recently told his support group friends. About half of those in his group are currently caring for a person with dementia in the home, and the others have done so in the past. In addition to listening, commiserating and offering suggestions, members of the group have recently begun delivering meals to the Ks to lend a hand.

Thanks to the care provided by her husband, the respite care provider, the Caregiver Support Group and the generosity of Judy Jarmon Diamond, Mrs. K is cared for tenderly and with great love in the home she has shared with her husband for many years. And as a bonus, Mr. K knows he’s not alone in fulfilling his promise of “for better or for worse”.

According to Self, low levels of folate, a nutrient found in spinach, can be linked to depression. This finding is based on a study by Tuft’s University’s Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging in Boston. A study from Brigham Young University found that baked potatoes are more than just comfort food. Increasing your intake of vitamin B6, found in potatoes, lowers your depres-sion risk. A medium spud with the skin provides nearly half the B6 you need all day.

On Monday, April 20, HBO and the Dallas Chapter hosted a sneak preview of the upcoming documentary, “The

Alzheimer’s Project.” While there is no cure for the disease, “The

Alzheimer’s Project” shows there is now genu-ine reason to be optimistic about the future. Debuting on HBO on May 10, and created by the Award-winning team behind HBO’s acclaimed “Addiction Project,” this multi-platform series takes a close look at groundbreaking discoveries made by the coun-try’s leading scientists, as well as the effects of this debilitating and fatal disease—both on those with Alzheimer’s and on their families.

Bringing a new understanding, “The Alzheimer’s Project” features a four-part documentary series, 17 short supplemental films, a companion book published by Public Affairs Books, a robust Web site and a nationwide community-based outreach campaign. HBO will use all of its platforms, including the HBO main service, multiplex

channels, HBO On Demand, HBO Podcasts, hbo.com, HBO Channel on YouTube and DVD sales to support the project.

“The Alzheimer’s research community welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with HBO on this unprecedented television event that seeks to raise new awareness and understanding of this devastating disease,” says Richard J. Hodes, M.D., director of the National Institute on Aging, the component of the National Institutes of Health leading the federal Alzheimer’s disease research program. “This series brings many of the nation’s leading Alzheimer’s researchers and their cutting-edge science directly to the American people. It’s a compelling story of scientific discovery, of research advances and challenges, and of the human faces behind the disease.”

For DeDe Willis, her 50th birthday was anything but ordinary as she celebrated surrounded by her close friends and family. Willis hosted a “Celebrate Life,” party in memory of her late mother who passed away in late 2008 from Alzheimer’s. Willis, the auction chair for the 20th Anniversary A.W.A.R.E. Luncheon, requested party guests “Celebrate Life” by bringing auction items in lieu of birthday gifts. “Alzheimer’s is something that I am very passionate about,” Willis said. “By helping with the auction and encouraging others, I am able to give back to this cause and ultimately make a difference.”

T he act of giving is unique for each individual. One Dallas man considers giving as a way to inspire and

encourage others to support a cause close to the heart – for Raymond Phillips that cause is Alzheimer’s disease and that gift is a charitable gift annuity.

Raymond lost his wife after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, a disease he terms as “ruthless and devastating in every way.” Wanting to support the ongoing work of the Association while improving his personal financial picture, Raymond used an Alzheimer’s Association Charitable Gift Annuity to meet his needs.

Simply put, the Alzheimer’s Association Charitable Gift Annuity provides the donor(s) a guaranteed income for life in exchange for a current gift of cash or securities. The donor also receives a current charitable tax deduction. Phillips said, “The value of the asset to the donor is not diminished, but it increases and that is the best of both worlds.” The annuity rate is determined solely by age – the older the donor, the higher the rate of payment. Annuity payments can be monthly, quarterly, annually or any schedule meeting the donor’s needs.

With the many economic pressures facing Americans of all ages, Phillips confirms his belief in charitable gift annuities, “This is a great option for senior citizens because you have a high and constant income stream and you have

given to a quality and credible organization like the Alzheimer’s Association.”

Mr. Phillips has provided significant resources to advance the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association – a world without Alzheimer’s. A true benefit of a charitable gift annuity is that the donor can see their gift in action. As a passionate advocate to end Alzheimer’s disease, Phillips said, “A charitable gift annuity should be part of one’s portfolio for good investing and good giving.”

East Texas Expansion

The Association recently opened the new Longview office, which currently serves as a resource of vital information and plans to provide outreach and hope to over 20,000 families in Gregg, Harrison and Marion counties affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association office held its official grand opening in January as the Longview Chamber of Commerce inducted the Association with a formal ribbon cutting attended by one hundred families, Association friends and colleagues. Serving as manager of family services to the East Texas area, Kari Pickering, M.S., will oversee

support groups, educate the community and increase the overall awareness of this disease to the East Texas community.

Pickering, an East Texas native, has been successful in reaching out to the public and providing education and support to the numerous underserved families that are eager to learn and gain the resources that will help them navigate their way through this devastating disease.

For more information regarding the Longview office, please contact [email protected] or visit www.AlzEastTexas.org.

The Alzheimer’s Association has put down roots in Longview and is providing many East Texas patients and caregivers with their own local resources.
