Youth Protection and texting with Scoutsby Bryan Wendell in Ask the Expert, Technology, Youth Protection

Waiting on that Scout to email or call you back? You could be waiting a long time.

These days, three-fourths of teens have smartphones, and their favorite way to communicate is by texting, according to the latest research.

If you’re a Scout leader, that isn’t news to you.

But how does the Youth Protection rule prohibiting one-on-one contact apply to texting? That was the question on the mind of a Scouter who emailed me recently and asked to remain anonymous. The Scouter writes: Continued

Conservation Projects and Awards

Did you know that you can earn an award or recognition from doing a conversation service project? BSA offers Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers, and Sea Scouts to fulfill “A Scout is Thrifty” and “Do a Good Turn Daily” by working in outdoors to better the environment and their community. Planning a good conservation project involves safety, documentation, and recognition. Set reasonable goals to allow all scouts and scouters to participate in the project. Follow the Service Project Planning Guidelines and the Safe Guide to Scouting to organize the event and check for permits or permissions prior to starting the project. Contact a project sponsor below or develop your own project. Ask your adult leader document the service project hours at the https://my.scouting.org/ using the project sign-in form used at the service project. Remember to have fun and be safe! Continue

Greater Cleveland Council Personnel Changes

We are pleased to announce that John Fabsits joined the Greater Cleveland Council staff as Director of Field Service effective June 1, 2016.

John brings to the council a wealth of knowledge with over ten (10) years of Scouting experience while working in the Great Rivers Council in Columbia, Missouri. He has served Scouting in a variety of roles from District Executive, Camp Director to Assistant Scout Executive. Some of John’s accomplishments include securing over 35% of the council’s capital campaign goal, 70% growth in Cub Scout Camp attendance, enhancing popcorn sales which led to a 15% increase, council website redesign, providing leadership and staff development.

John and his wife, Izzy, enjoy attending sporting events, concerts and one-tank travel excursions. John has relocated to Cleveland from Columbia, Missouri. His wife will join him later this summer.

We are pleased to announce the promotion of Kallee Kissling to the position of district director in the Bay-Lakes Council in Appleton, Wisconsin. Kallee will assume her new position on July 15, 2016. In her new role, she will supervise two other professional staff members as she and her team oversee the service area in and around Green Bay.

As most of us know, Kallee grew up in Appleton. This well-deserved promotion takes her back to her home near family, friends and her beloved Green Bay Packers!

In June 2011, Kallee began her professional Scouting career as a district executive here in Cleveland. She served with distinction throughout the council, with stints in Quarrylands District, Western Trails and Tinkers Creek. In June 2014, she was promoted to senior district executive. Beloved by volunteers and professionals alike, Kallee will be dearly missed. Please join me in thanking Kallee Kissling for her years of service to the Greater Cleveland Council and congratulating her on her promotion to district director.

Summer Camp 2017!

Have you started thinking about summer camp 2017? It is not too early to work with your troop committee and the patrol leaders’ council to look at your troop’s summer camp options. During your discussions, please consider the Beaumont Scout Reservation for your summer camp experience.

Beaumont Scout Reservation, just outside of Rock Creek, Ohio, is about 60 minutes east of Cleveland. Beaumont Scout Reservation consists of about 1200 acres with everything from primitive campsites to wall tents to troop lodges. We can accommodate any size troop. Another part of the Beaumont Scout Reservation experience is that you can choose to eat your meals in the dining hall or do your own patrol cooking for the week in your campsite or troop lodge. Along with the staple Scouting experiences like Scoutcraft, handicraft, aquatics, and shooting sports, we also offer challenging lake-front merit badges at Lake Klein, a complete high and low C.O.P.E. course, and a climbing tower to challenge your older Scouts. New Scouts can get a great start on their trail to Eagle in our Eagle Quest program. The Environmental Resource Center is the home for the Ecology/Nature merit badges for 2017 summer camp, and incorporates state-of-the-art technology in this very “green” building, thanks to some wonderful volunteers and community help.

Beaumont in the City – JULY 25-29, 2016 at The GCC Service Center

BEAUMONT IN THE CITY is designed as an immersive camp experience. Scouts will have the chance to participate in merit

badge activities that use the resources of the downtown area. We will utilize Beaumont Summer Camp staff to facilitate programs

the area. Because we are somewhat limited in the facilities we have in Cleveland, the class sizes will be capped. This ensures we

are to accommodate Scouts in each program. program experience is all inclusive meaning program supplies or transportation costs

are covered as a part of the fee. If a Scout chooses to take Welding, for example, his craft kit he makes will be taken home with

him. Flyer

New Campsite Dedicated

On June 21, 2016 Rodgers Ridge campsite was formally dedicated at an evening ceremony. Legendary Scouter George Qua had the honor of cutting the rope with a hand ax and sharing the story of his friend, Rudolph “Rudy” Rogers. Rudy was the pied piper of Scouting in the Lee Harvard neighborhood. He was responsible for organizing or reorganizing over 85 traditional units and recruiting 2,500 boys over the course of 15 years. All of the boys knew him as Mr. Scouting even if they were not Scouts.

Last spring, the C4-440-14 Wood Badge Class cleared the underbrush at the site for their service project to Beaumont Scout Reservation. Tree stumps were removed and at the May 2016 Wilderness Engineers Weekend, a pavilion was moved from Camp McCahill and repurposed to complete the campsite. Rodgers Ridge will be used for new Scout troops and will be furnished with tents and equipment needed to patrol cook.

Bugling Merit Badge Offered at Beaumont Summer Camp

Special thanks go out to Scoutmaster and bugler, Dave Accetta who donated a bugle box so that the Bugling Merit Badge could be taught at summer camp. Dave, an accomplished bugler, acquired the bugles from eBay over the past year. He polished and repaired the four bugles, and designed and built a box to store the bugles and cleaning instruments when not in use. His daughter, Katherine, decorated the exterior of the box to reflect its contents. Photos

Sea Scouts Program has separated from the Venturing Program.  Can you still earn Venturing Awards?

The BSA National Board, on February 10, 2016, adopted a resolution “…to make Sea Scouts a separate program with the same status of other programs.” “Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Varsity Scouting are for boys. Venturing and Sea Scouting are for young men and young women.”

As with past changes in BSA programs, changes to eligibility and requirements for advancement, awards, and recognition will be phased in over time. For the time being:

• Keep doing what you’ve been doing.

• Use the eligibility and requirements that were in effect before the Resolution.

• Specifically, Sea Scouts may continue to earn all Venturing awards and recognitions.
