I fondly remember as a child the drive our family made each spring break to see my grandparents in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was during this long drive, spurred on by familiar landmarks, that increased the anticipation of our final destination. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, we didn’t have cell phones to pacify us nor did we have electronic games to pass the time. Activity books, action figures or a few Matchbox cars were my only options. Sure, there was the license plate game. But, as a child and a journey that in good weather would take at least 6 hours and likely another 1-3 hours if snow up north was bad, how many times can a kid play the license plate game? I knew the route well: US 23 North to I 75, across the Mackinac Bridge, turn east towards Hessel, exit onto St. Martin’s Point Road to the “Old Forester’s Retreat.” I suspect Cleopas and his friend knew their route too. They had traveled the road between Jerusalem and Emmaus many times. It was about 7 miles and may have taken several hours or more. I’m sure they remembered their landmarks as I remember the landmarks along my journey. One day, though, Cleopas and his friend’s lives would be changed forever. They were distracted. Understandably, they were focused on Jesus’ crucifixion. I was often distracted by focusing on the destination and not the journey. Many times I missed something because I was focused on play or blindly starring into space. Suddenly, Jesus was walking with our friends. Isn’t that the way it hap-pens? Too often, we’re distracted. We’re focused on the destination; our to-do list, kids to shuttle, meetings and sports schedules and not the journey. I wonder what we miss because we're distract-ed?

What was life like prior to your Walk to Emmaus? Were you traveling through life focused on everything but life itself? Were you so distracted you didn’t recognize God trying to get your attention until “your eyes were opened?” We are all on a journey. Our daily walk may look the same as it did yesterday. We worry about what has happened, what’s going to happen or what we need to do. As Christians, enjoy the journey. By all means, “ anticipate” our final destination but don’t be so distracted you miss life. Though we get distracted, “anticipate” that Jesus wants to walk with us and change our lives too. Think of your distracted friends and introduce them to the Walk to Emmaus, Chrysalis or Face-to-Face. Allow the Holy Spirit to open their hearts and “open their eyes” as they find faith along their journey through life. David Tennant

A Message from our Community Lay Director

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Jesus Christ returns.” Philippians 1.6

This verse has been on my heart for the last few weeks. I have prayed and reflected on it myself, and have also felt led to pass it on to several others.

Our loving Father who began this good work within us will continue it throughout our lifetime, finishing it when we meet him face to face. God’s work for us began when Christ died on the cross in our place. His work within us began when we first believed.

For many of us this happened on our own Walk. It did for me. I thought I was a Christian prior to my Walk, but I didn’t really understand the Gospel at all. I was still “earning my own salvation.” On Walk 71 He started that good work within me.

Let’s take time and reflect on our sponsorship. To whom can we give this gift of Emmaus? Pray on it, and then act!

De Colores,

Susan Wisner, Community Lay DIrector

Treasurer’s Report

So far this year we had $15, 398 in donations, pilgrim fees and team fees, and $22, 655 in expenses. We have a cash balance of $36,315.

Also, due to our devoted community, we were able to offer nine scholarships to cover the walk fees this year.

Thank you for being so committed to loving and serving our Lord!

De Colores,

Lucy Trumbull, Treasurer

Logistics Help Needed We are all gifted with various skills and talents, and if you are someone who likes to serve as a LOG, organize information, or map out signs and work processes - you would be a big blessing to our community and future walks. I am looking for 2-3 assistants to help with the preparations for each walk, and to help work through logistics changes as we anticipate a move to a new facility. Please contact me if you are interested. Many hands make light work! DeColores, Jane Glandorf 513-919-6153 [email protected]

Sponsorship Information: What does it really mean to be a sponsor for someone on aWalk? How can one be the best sponsor to a pilgrim? According to one definition of the word sponsor, it is “an individual who organizes and is com-mitted to the development of a program or project”. In this case then a sponsor is someone who is COMMITTED to the spiritual development of a pilgrim, and is willing to help them before, during, and in the 4th days afterwards. Emmaus is so much more than a 72 hour retreat...it’s opening the door to a deeper relationship with Christ!

Pray and listen to who God is leading you to invite. Talk to that person openly and honestly, let them hear how your walk has impacted your journey with Christ. If the person has questions about the week-end, answer them. As we say, there are no secrets, but many wonderful surprises! Once the person has accepted the offer of the weekend, help organize anything that will let them fully focus on the weekend. Plan to attend candlelight and closing, and secure agape for your pilgrim. Once the weekend is over, keep in contact with your pilgrim. Ask about their 4th days. Invite them to continue their journey by becoming part of a share group. Encourage them to attend gatherings, and most importantly, encourage them to become active in service to Christ, in their church and community..If you need more infor-mation about sponsoring, or need to know when the next training will take place, please contact Teresa Rutherford, Education/Sponsorship Coordinator, at [email protected].

Chrysalis Information: At a recent Board meeting, it was decided to put on hold future Chrysalis flights within our community. This was due to the cancellation of several recent flights due to limited registered caterpillars. We will postpone flights while the Upper Room considers a revised weekend schedule for Chrysalis, perhaps making it easier for younger people to attend.

Until this time, we encourage any interested young people and their sponsors to consider having them attending a flight at the Northern Lights community, which holds their Chrysalis weekends at Lebanon UMC. Their young women’s flight will be MLK weekend (January 19-21), and the young men’s flight will be President’s Day weekend (Feb. 16-18)

Please contact Jeff Markovic with any questions or help registering, 513-260-4783.

Notes from the Good Shepherd: Mining for Share Groups “At times our ow light goes out and is rekindled by the spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.” Albert Schweitzer When I read this quote, I think of our 4th days and how participating in a share group can deepend our service for the Lord. We have continued working on developing a share group data base, and need the community to help. Listed below are the share group names we have on record. Please take a moment to review, and email me any updates to your group’s information (e.g.: is the group still in existence?/ meeting time/location changes/ open or closed group, etc. ) Share Group Directory: Eastgate Christian Emmaus Men’s Church of the Savior MGM Men’s Mason UMC Emmaus Men’s Springdale (meets Mon. eves) Monday Men’s Meeting Saturday Mount Moriah Meeting Tuesday Bible Study Wednesday Night group Women: Four friends group Women’s Saturday morning Share Group The focus of the Board, the leadership team and our Lay Director is sponsorship. Change of “venue” for Oct. Gathering In preparation for the Hyde Park renovations in 2019, the Board has been reviewing possible locations for future Emmaus functions.

After reviewing St. Pauls’ UMC in Madeira, it was decided to hold October Gathering there to give the community a feel for this possible option.

Please join us for Gathering on 10/4/18 at 7:00 pm.

Address is: 8221 Miami Av, Madiera, OH
