Parents, Students and Supporters of Scotch Basketball…

In this week’s edition of Great Shot we hear from the man who started it all- Rob Hortin. Rob has made a

fantastic contribution to Scotch Basketball and has developed the program into what it is today.

Jack Edwards - TIC of Basketball

Dear Friends,

You may know by now that I have decided to say farewell to Scotch and enter retirement. I do not wish to

leave without saying good-bye to you, our players, and the wonderful support network that has empowered

Scotch basketball throughout the years.

So, to the parents who made all of this possible, I say ‘Thank you’; to all the players I have been privileged

to coach and teach, I say ‘Well done!’; and to the many coaches and team

managers who contribute so very much to our boys’ experience, I say ‘Bravo!’

It is for others to judge and I know I am biased, but I am proud of what we have

achieved in basketball, especially as we have but one court. In my dreams, I

imagine a second court at Scotch and wonder how many students would play

our game. One day, perhaps, and in the mean time we shall defend our native

fortress to the end. Of this, I am sure.

Working with great people has always been a pleasure for me, and I have

known many. They know who they are and I wish them and theirs every

success in the future, as I do every one of you and your boys, who are the beating heart of our sport. What a

wise choice you or your son made when he decided to pull on his boots and see what he could make of

basketball. Watching or coaching him in his early years was tremendously rewarding, and seeing him

develop his skills and confidence in a rewarding and caring environment was sometimes challenging, often

amazing, and always fun. I take a thousand good memories with me.

I also wish to thank Principal Batty and Directors of Sport, Barry Price and Stuart Powell, for their strong

support and assistance over a long period of time and, last but not least, our wonderful team of news hounds

and research assistants at Great Shot! HQ. You know that our news room lies deep beneath the Glenn

Centre, where our team work tirelessly to produce your favourite basketball news sheet, often by candle

light in the wee hours. They are a great team and it has been my distinct pleasure to work with them.

In closing, I simply wish to say that I have loved my time at Scotch and especially my

involvement with our basketball community. Thank you for your enduring support and,

should you see me courtside from time to time, and I hope that will be the case, please

say hello.

Until we meet again, ‘Go, Scotch!’

Scotch Firsts (54) defeated St. Kevin’s College (51)

The Scotch First’s played the final game of the season before the redraw at St. Kevin’s last Wednesday

afternoon. The two teams started well and traded baskets for most of the quarter with St. Kevin’s taking a

17-16 lead after the first. Vice-Captain Jacob Davis and young gun Lachlan Maddern got Scotch off to a

great start with their contributions on both sides of the ball.

The second quarter saw the Scotch reserves contribute heavily to help the team keep pace. Sam Davis had a

major influence on the game with timely defensive plays as well as contributing on the offensive end of the

court. Spencer Walters made great decisions offensively whilst helping shut down one of St. Kevin’s main

players.

Scotch would storm back to take a 33-31 halftime lead. The second half was a true defensive battle as both

teams fought hard to keep the score at a manageable distance. Nick Marks had a near flawless floor game

keeping Scotch organised on offence and setting the tone defensively. Cooper Eagles and Jordan

Andranopolous were very effective against the physical frontline of St. Kevin’s forcing them into tough

shots and winning the tough rebounds. Bill Sharp hauled in a few critical rebounds and held his own

defensively.

Scotch led 44-39 at three quarter time. Scotch would build a 7-point lead behind the interior scoring

of Captain Ashley Neilson and Richie Robenstone who dominated the paint on both ends in the final

period. St. Kevin’s would fight back and reduce the lead to 1-point before Robenstone calmly sank two free

throws to give Scotch a 3-point buffer for the 54-51 win.

Scotch Firsts (54) defeated by Haileybury College (63)

The Scotch First’s took on Haileybury last Saturday at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre.

Haileybury’s lineup boasts a 6’5” point guard that represents Victoria and a 6’8” Centre that represents

Australia and is arguably the best 1-2 punch in the APS. The duo would score 47 of the teams 63 points.

Scotch got off to a great start and matched basket for basket with Haileybury behind the hot shooting

of Lachlan Maddern who had his breakout game of the season. Richie Robenstone contributed on the

scoreboard early despite having his hands full on the

defensive end of the floor. Scotch trailed 21-15 at

quarter time.

The second quarter saw Scotch Captain Ashley

Neilson and Vice-Captain Jacob Davis hit the

scoreboard to keep Scotch within reach. Bill Sharp,

Cooper Eagles and Spencer Walters gave

important contributions on the defensive end of the

floor. Haileybury led Scotch 37-27 at halftime.

The third quarter saw Scotch execute the in-game adjustments almost perfectly despite Haileybury’s lead

reaching 16 points early in the quarter. Nick Marks led the charge scoring the

first 8 points of the quarter for Scotch. Sam Davis and Jordan

Andranopolous sparked the Scotch comeback with their defensive intensity and

execution. Scotch cut the once 16-point deficit to 50-45 at three quarter time.

The lead would stretch to 8-points before Scotch would get to within 2-points

with just over two minutes to play. Scotch had their chances to change the game,

but costly turnovers and missed scoring opportunities saw Haileybury run away

with a 63-54 win.

Scotch 2nds (51) defeated Geelong College (48)

Off the back of two straight wins, the Scotch 2nds were heading down to Geelong College to try and keep

our streak alive. Unfortunately, due to a miscommunication, the bus ended up leaving significantly later than

planned. However, as four of our players had made their own way to Geelong, the match was able to start on

time, with Scotch playing 4 against 5 for the first 15 minutes of the first half. In an outstanding effort,

Charlie Blenheim, Ben Crummy, Richard Lucas and Harry Schneider managed to stay competitive in

the game, trailing by only 5 points when the remainder of the team arrived. They were definitely the heroes

of the day.

With some fresh legs, Scotch forged ahead, going up by 10 in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Ned

Carr in particular provided a scoring punch in the post, using his strength and size to score at will. Tight

defence from the squad allowed us to hold our lead in the face of a late push from Geelong, extending our

win streak to 3 heading into the break. It wasn't the easiest way to win a game, but the boys got it done!

Scotch 4ths Red (54) defeated Caulfield (CCC) (8)

A strong performance this week for the 4ths Red against Caulfield, with a final score of 54-8. Harrison

Liu’s quick passes combined with strong

rebounding and put backs from Jeremy New put

the team in good shape for securing this week’s

win. Charging ahead in the scoring this week were

Marcus Cheng (24), Leo Li (13) and Aaron Toy

(11). It was good to see a much more comfortable

win against this team after a much closer score

line at the start of the season.

Page 8: Great Shot! - Scotch College, Melbourne

Coach: Ms Nick Farmer

Scotch 4ths Blue (28) defeated by Wesley St Kilda (35)

For our first game not at MSAC, the 4ths Blues headed to Wesley for a fixture late on Saturday morning.

Unfortunately, we got off to a slow start with only 4 players, but considering the numbers mismatch, we

kept it relatively close until a 5th player showed up! We went into the break down 25-11.

We went into the second half looking to raise the intensity and we did well, testing out our full court press

and generating some easy baskets off Wesley turnovers. The boys outscored our opponents 17-10 in the

second half, but unfortunately, the deficit we created in the first half was too much to overcome and we went

down 35-28. Bad luck boys.

Coach: Mr Sam Matthews

Scotch 5ths Red (43) defeated Carey Grammar (11)

The boys of the 5ths Red looked to make Carey uncomfortable from the tip. The on-ball defensive proved

too much for Carey to handle early on as we started the game by forcing 5 consecutive turnovers. Defence

flowed into offence as we were able to take advantage of fast-break opportunities. When the game slowed

down into a half court game, it looked like Carey would begin to slow down our scoring. However, the boys

countered by using precise passing and well timed cuts to ensure we could still score. We went into halftime

leading 24- 6.

Darren Tan (12 points) remained a consistent scorer, as he was dynamic both off the catch and off the

dribble.

Alex Fan (4 points) provided energy off the bench with his defensive intensity making it tough for the

opposition to get past him. He also contributed on offence hitting a nice step back.

Fergus Martinotti (4 points) was huge in the transition scoring as he got the ball to his teammates on the

fast break and got a couple of baskets himself.

Ben Collie (2 points) was big on defence, stepping up in the key to make sure Carey couldn't get off a clean

look. He also pulled down a huge board and put it back for his score.

James Chen (5 points) was dangerous in the half court as he left defenders behind him to set up his

teammates and hitting some nice jumpers to score.

Fergus Stuchbery (9 points) had his jump shot dialled in and was also able capitalise when he pushed the

ball in transition.

Page 9: Great Shot! - Scotch College, Melbourne

Lachie Hartnett (2 points) looked to take on his man off the dribble and it was great to see him get up on

his man in the full court, forcing a number of turnovers.

Liam McKeith (2 points) was our anchor on defence as no-one could past him when he was a secondary

defender and was an ever-present threat with his jump shot on offence.

In the end our defensive intensity and unselfish ball movement led to a comprehensive win.

Well played Scotch!

Coach: Mr Toby Dans

Scotch 5ths Blue (40) defeated Wesley Waverley (30)

This week the boys had an early start in Glen Waverley and it showed, struggling with finding their rhythm

straight out of the gate. Wesley was dominant in the first half yet failed to pull away, garnering just a three

point lead at the half. This was due to in large part Peter Wang MN (6 points) and Yicheng Jiang’s (4

points) superb defence that helped stem the bleeding of easy buckets in the paint. However, it was mainly

due to the relentless scoring of Jonathan Wu (11 points) on very efficient shooting, that we were able to

stay in the game.

The boys once again proved to be a great second half team, simply dominating the game in every aspect for

the last 20 minutes. Tom An could not be stopped scoring all of his 9 points in the second half, coupled with

some excellent on ball defence. Oscar Lee (6 points) showed some great moves on the low block and

dominated the paint to help the boys get a well deserved and classy win against a quality opposition.

Coach: Mr Ishaan Bungay

Scotch 6ths Red (42) defeated Xavier College Red (30)

The scotch 6ths Red played Xavier Red this week. The boys had to start the game with only 4 players due to

players having trouble finding the courts, but the team work of will Duke and Angus Jones managed to

hold down the fort before the rest of the boys could arrive. In what was easily Will Wu’s best game of the

season he scored basket after basket helping the boys get out to a strong lead going into the half.

It was a similar story in the second half as Scotch continued to play well and secure a 12 point win.

Coach: Mr Cameron Maddern

Scotch 6ths Blue (10) drew with Geelong College (10)

After an early wake up and a delayed departure to Geelong College the boys arrived only to find out there

was a single half of basketball to play. Despite this, the boys still played hard and with a competitive spirit,

unfortunately it wasn’t enough. Despite the game ending in a draw after only 20 minutes of playing time and

2 hours of driving, the boys have much to take from the game.

Coach: Mr Josh Henkes

Scotch 10A (43) defeated St. Kevin’s College (37)

Our commitment to defence has been the key to the success we have accomplished this season. It has been

the reason we were able to go 6-0 an amazing achievement. Today was a tough win against St. Kevin’s who

fought to the end and made a run with 1:30 to play, but we were able to get the 43-37 victory.

Ryan Griffiths again was the ring leader, playing great one on one defence and creating excellent offensive

opportunities. Nick Chan just gives everything he's got and was effective on both sides of the ball, while

Page 10: Great Shot! - Scotch College, Melbourne

Adam Pai has impressed me with his running the offence and locking up on defence. Matt Henkes

Younger just finds the hoop and a stopper on the defensive end. Rob Parks is an athlete and continues to be

handy around the hoop and soft touch from the perimeter. Jasper Robinson just has fun but is so effective

and Victor Ho makes a positive impact when on the floor. Tom Steventon has played excellent all season

he is special and I expect big things in the upcoming years.

I want to thank my main man Anil Patel for all his support and commitment to our team. A big thank you to

Jack Edwards, you have done an outstanding job and I look forward to working together for a long time.

To the Year 10A team thank you so much for trusting in me and the hard work you put in. I am so proud of

each and every one of you, we played smart, hard and together!!!

P.S. Big shout out to Mrs. Davis for the wonderful pictures and our weekly stories!!!

Go Scotch 🏀💯

Coach: Mr Kelvin “KB” Bowers

Scotch 10B Red (31) defeated by Xavier College Black (39)

Having not played a match for 2 weeks, the 10B Red’s came into Saturday against Xavier with a real focus

on turning our strong defence into offensive flow. We started the game perfectly, with Nathan Nicolaides

making a nice layup from a well-executed 5-out play. Eric Zhuang also gave us a real spark off the bench,

igniting with 6 points in the first half as he put together one of his best games for the season. Despite our

solid finishing, sloppy turnovers and defensive miscommunications gifted Xavier a few easy buckets to get

them rolling, and their ascendancy on the boards proved costly. We headed into the main break optimistic,

but with an 8 point deficit.

In the second half, we switched into gear and brought more intensity into the game. Exceptional defensive

play by Eddie Yang anchored our defence and carried our team on that side of the ball. Offensively we got

the long ball to fall for the first time this season, as 4 3-pointers dropped for us from a handful of different

players. We had worked our way into the game nicely, and were threatening to steal one at the end, but the

buzzer beat us and we fell to Xavier by the same half time margin. Definitely a game we can build on, with

unforced turnovers and second chance opportunities ultimately costing us the W. Onwards and upwards!

Page 12: Great Shot! - Scotch College, Melbourne

Coach: Mr James Ward

Scotch 10B Blue (33) defeated by St. Kevin’s College Green (44)

The boys were a bit sluggish to start, coming off a week with no trainings and the scoreboard reflected that

early. Micah Dans got off to a quick start with a couple of easy baskets at the rim and some good cutting

saw Seb Feile get on the board after a couple of weeks without luck. Dale Wilson provided a great inside

presence sending a few shots away to stop the run from St Kevin’s and the insertion of Lachlan

MacKinnon off the bench brought some much needed rebounding and as a result he got himself on the

board. Some late buckets from Ryan McMahon and Jackson kept the game close and we went into the half

down 3.

The second half began with a scoring explosion led by Hamish Cameron and Derek Phillips saw Scotch

take the lead and looked like running away with it. Finn Lacey controlled the tempo well and the lead got to

as much as 10. However down the stretch the lack of control and carelessness with the ball led to our

downfall.

Go Scotch!!

Scotch 9A (48) defeated Caulfield (CCC) (45)

The Scotch 9A's came out firing against a talented Caulfield side, Scotch ran early with their signature fast

paced transition offense. However, Caulfield were not out of it yet and scores were traded back and forth

through the majority of the game. Scotch held what seemed like a comfortable 8 point lead until the last

couple of minutes where Scotch relaxed, Caulfield jumped at the opportunity and clawed back with a shot

on the siren to close the end margin to only 3 points.

I hope everyone gets some shots up in their break!

Coach: Mr Conrad Cooper

Scotch 9B Red (46) defeated Carey Grammar Gold (8)

The 9B Red’s had an early wake up for an 8:30 game against Carey Grammar. With a full 11 man line up,

the boys were prepared to maximise their court time, running hard on transition and playing full court man.

This caused havoc for the Carey ball carriers and we forced turn over, after turn over and converted for

transition lay ups. I was really pleased with the effort from all the boys as we attacked the rim and crashed

rebounds. As I mentioned after the game, there is always an opportunity to better yourself both as a

basketballer and as a person. There is always the opportunity to display respect and humility to the

opposition, team mates and referees. I was impressed by the Carey side who despite finding themselves in a

tough position in terms of the scoreboard held their heads up throughout the game and were courteous in

defeat.

Scotch 9C (20) defeated by St Kevin’s College (43)

St Kevin’s quickly showed that they had considerably more shooting skill than us, but good defensive

intensity, particularly by Jason Chiu and Lucas Teoh, slowed them down and kept their opportunities to a

minimum. Adam Wang and Jigar Thakkar both scored handy baskets, but MVP was clearly Joshua

Huang, with strong contributions in all areas of the game including 10 points.

Coach: Mr Keith Oatley

Scotch 8A (60) defeated Melbourne Grammar (24)

Scotch faced MGS for the second time this season, prepared for a tough game having defeated MGS by a

small margin in the first game of the year.

It was an arm wrestle early in the first half, with both teams going basket for basket. Scotch’s defence was

good, but MGS hit some nice outside shots to stay in the game.

Halfway through the first half, Scotch seemed to wake up. They piled on 8pts in quick succession with no

reply from MGS, in a great display of transition basketball. Carlin Briggs’ energy off the bench was

commendable, with 7 first half points, and numerous assists to go with them. Harry Winnike and Ben

Cashin ran the floor extremely well, lifting the tempo of Scotch’s offence which MGS couldn’t match. At

the halftime break Scotch pushed ahead to an 11pt lead, 21-10.

The second half was a dominant display from Scotch. Caleb Lingwood-Smith’s defensive efforts were key

in limiting MGS scoring opportunities. On the offensive end it was a true team effort, some great passing

made the MGS defence look like statues as Scotch continually found a way to the rim.

The second half saw Scotch pile on another 39pts, while holding MGS to 14, with Scotch running out the

clear winners 60-24. The scoreline demonstrated how much we have progressed as a team throughout the

season so far, with 7 of our 9 players scoring in the match, and all playing a role in a great team win.

Carlin Briggs finished with a game-high 19pts, closely followed by Mac Debeljak on 17pts, while Josh

Cutchie chipped in a handy 10pts of his own.

Go Scotch!

Coach: Ms Sian Gillam

Scotch 8B Red (40) defeated Caulfield (23)

Coming into this game after not having played a match together for 3 weeks and having one of our core

players Ryan Chiem out due to injury, we knew this game was not going to be pretty.

As expected, the boys started off by showing the results of not having played a game in 3 weeks. To say our

game play was messy would have been an understatement. The boys turned the ball over, blew defensive

assignments and were unable to finish on the offensive end. Even with our subpar performance, we were

still able to be up 4 points after the first ten minutes.

Making a few substitutions and defensive adjustments, the boys were able to get back into the rhythm in

which he had previously established in our past games. Quick hands and solid defence by Hugo Gertis,

Harrison Cameron and Casey Elliot allowed us to extend out lead to 20 points by the end of the first half.

Page 15: Great Shot! - Scotch College, Melbourne

The start of the second half saw a reoccurring problem in which we face every week. The slacking and loss

of focus we showed on the court was capitalised by the opposition as they closed the lead back to single

digits. However, a spurt of good offensive possessions by Kyle Zheng allowed us to regain our footing.

Steady control of the game by Angus Mccleary and Omar Morsi gave us the confidence we needed to

make a final push in the last few minutes of the match. By the end of the game, we were able to push the

single digit lead we had to 17 points.

Rough game back for the boys, but good resilience was shown.

Look forward to fixing the problems seen in the game at training.

Go Scotch

Coach: Mr Ray Feng

Scotch 8B Blue (27) defeated by Caulfield (CWH) (70)

Scotch were at Wheelers Hill on Saturday to play against Caulfield. Caulfield set the tempo for the game, by

pushing the ball on the fast-break, while Scotch had to adjust to this game style. Caulfield were able to push

out to a sizeable lead. The first half finished with Scotch trailing Caulfield 7-31.

Scotch adjusted in the second half. They were able to be more aggressive and proved that they could keep up

with Caulfield on the offensive end. Both Jack Derbyshire and Alex Gray led the team to this improved

offensive second half, being able to find good shots as well as open teammates. However, defensive lapses

proved to be an issue once again. Caulfield proved to be too strong. The game finished with Scotch falling to

Caulfield, 27-70.

Coach: Mr Sam Hiramatsu

Scotch 8C Red defeated XC Burke Hall

My team had their well deserved second win of the season. We have progressively worked better as a team

in every game. Tom and Sam played excellent as point guards working with Jack and Charlie under the

ring. All players assisted each other and shared the ball appropriately. The first half was fairly even against

Xavier, but our strength and conditioning gave us a very valuable win in the end. Unfortunately, Musquet

will not be joining us next term, but we wish him the very best with his snow sports.

Coach: Mr Alec Uittenbosch

Scotch 8C Blue narrowly defeated by Melbourne Grammar

The mighty 8C Blues narrowly lost to an in-form year 8 Melbourne Grammar side. Tiger was an asset for us

late in the game, along with Jason, scoring a late game shot that was important for us. Lachlan also had

some very valuable game time for us with an impressive and-one play. It hit us hard when one of our most

productive players, Noah, got fouled out, but the minutes he played were very good to us. Ned had some

crucial rebounding, along with Ruicheng and Charles’ tough defence, getting steals on many plays.

Bad luck boys

Go Scotch!

Coach: Mr Oscar Matthews

Scotch 7A (43) defeated Haileybury (37)

Scotch went on a road trip down to Haileybury this week to match-up

against a star-studded and well-drilled team. Despite the early morning and

blistering cold, Scotch were determined to keep their undefeated run alive.

Page 16: Great Shot! - Scotch College, Melbourne

David Bendschneider kicked the game off with his usual

rebounding brilliance – securing vital defensive rebounds while

also dominating the offensive glass for an easy 10 points. Will

Genovese also found some fantastic defensive form – locking

down Haileybury’s dominant ball-handling forward to keep him to

two points in the first half. Josh Watters also demonstrated some

defensive brilliance; using his length to protect the rim while

making sure he didn’t foul in order to keep Haileybury off the foul

line. Scotch’s defensive efforts quickly turned into easy offensive

looks, with Harry Ward carving up Haileybury’s guards

for 10 points in the first half. Scotch (23) led Haileybury at the

break (17).

The second half saw Haileybury place an emphasis on their own

defence. As Haileybury looked to shut Harry Ward down by

sending their star

forward to defend

him, Harry took

the opportunity to

get his teammates involved and facilitate. Will

Genovese was the beneficiary of much of Harry’s passing

as Will relentlessly attacked the rim for 8 points in the

second half. As Haileybury began to score the basketball

consistently, Nathan Ou pushed the tempo with his

lightning-fast ball-handling to secure some vital transition

baskets and keep Scotch in front. Despite a late run from

Haileybury, Scotch kept the scoreboard ticking over to

secure the 6 point win, tallying 43 points to

Haileybury’s 37.

Go, Scotch!

Coach: Mr Tim Bamford Thank you to Michelle Bendschneider for the Photos

Scotch 7B Red (28) defeated by Wesley College (60)

The Scotch 7B1 Red Basketball side came up against a very strong Wesley team that was too strong for us

in the end. Although we were missing 3 players and only had 5 boys at the game for the start of the match,

our lads still put in a really good second half effort which meant that we only lost by 28 points in the end.

Emanuel Balot had an absolute stand out game by being really strong offensively and being our main score

getter for the match. Tarkan Kaya improved his driving to the basket as the game went on by scoring

valuable points towards our team. James Talbot and Paul Liu played strong defensive games in the second

half by not allowing Wesley to get inside drives to the basket, as their only way to score was by taking low

percentage mid-range jump shots. Jordon Wong had good offensive speed by getting the ball down the

floor and Edward Aunger showcased his strong ability to make 3–pointers and mid–range shots yet again.

Although we lost by a significant margin in the end, our effort must be commended by not letting Wesley

have a complete ‘blow out’ on Saturday as we found a way to get back into the game. Only losing two

games this late into the season is an awesome job from the boys.

GO SCOTCH!!!

Scotch 7B Blue (22) defeated Melbourne Grammar (20)

This week we faced a new challenge of taking on our biggest rival in Melbourne Grammar. After a long

weekend break, we were keen to get a big win leading into the holidays. The game started off action packed,

with scoring from both teams being in abundance. Will continued to show why he is one of the best

rebounders in the competition and Finn’s awesome effort and skill gave us much needed baskets in a tight

game. The game changed leads quite often throughout and this meant that we couldn’t take our foot off the

gas. Tom continued to improve, coming up for us down the stretch. Although Charlie had a tough shooting

day, he gave us multiple assists which were huge for us.

Great win boys, and outstanding defence by Kaden on the final play.

Good luck for your exams.

Go Scotch!
