Formed in 1998, the Quartet is named for the 19th century violinist AntonínBennewitz, a seminal figure in the creation of the Czech violin school. Bennewitzreceived their professional training from chamber illuminaries: Milan Kampa (SmetanaQuartet), Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet), and Walter Levin (LaSalle Quartet).

While the ensemble are active participants on the Czech domestic music scene, it isalso considered one of the top international chamber ensembles, winners of twoprestigious competitions – Osaka (2005), Premio Paolo Borciani (2008). In 2019the ensemble won the Classic Prague Award for the Best Chamber MusicPerformance of the Year. Bennewitz has garnered a reputation for its exciting andeclectic programming.

The quartet performs at major venues: Wigmore Hall London, Musikverein Wien,Konzerthaus Berlin, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées Paris, The Frick Collection NewYork, Seoul Art Center, Rudolfinum, and is regularly invited to prominent festivalssuch as the Salzburger Festspiele, Luzerne Festival, Rheingau Musik Festival,Kammermusikfest Lockenhaus, and the Prague Spring.

The group has worked with artists: Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Alexander Melnikov, VadimGluzman, Isabel Charisius, Pietro de Maria, Reto Bieri, Danjulo Ishizaka and others.

Their discography includes Janáček’s two string quartets and Bartók’s fourth,Smetana’s quartets, and Dvořák’s complete Cypresses cycle, on the Hänssler Classiclabel, followed by recording of Op. 51, 106 on the SWR music label.

In 2019, the group will present Absolute Jest by John Adams with the PragueSymphony Orchestra, and in collaboration with Peter Holtslag, they will premiere anew work for a recorder and string quartet by Willem Wander van Nieuwkerk inElbphilharmonie Hamburg.

The Irish-Canadian mezzo has been named “Young Singer of the Year” 2018International Opera Awards, “Young Artist of the Year” by The Arts Desk, and“Breakthrough Artist in UK Opera.” She is a rising star, in demand internationally for herexquisite sound, effortless skill, and intelligent musicality. Her versatility extends fromoperatic Mozart to Kurt Weill cabaret, music theatre to the Metropolitan Opera.

Opera News has praised her for her “delectably rich, silver-toned mezzo-soprano, witha beautiful sense of line and effortless, rapid runs.”

Her 2018/19 season included UK debuts with the BBC Proms and the Grange Festival asMozart’s Cherubino, with the MDR Sinfonieorchester as Haydn’s Berenice, and with theRoyal Opera House, Muscat in La Traviata. She also debuted the title roles in Carmen andDer Rosenkavalier, for Oper Leipzig, and Mozart’s Idamante for Toronto’s Opera Atelier.

Wallis is a passionate recitalist, having performed at Aspen, Caramoor, Banff, Luminato,Music & Beyond, and Ottawa Chamber Music festivals. In December, she will perform inAustralia. Wallis is a 2013 graduate of both the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann YoungArtist Development Program & the Juilliard School’s Artist Diploma in Opera Studies, and a2011 graduate of the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio. She has studied at TheGlenn Gould School, the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Music Institute, and the InternationalMeistersinger Akademie in Germany, and continues her private studies with Edith Wiens.

Steven Philcox, pianoSteven is Associate Professor at the University of Toronto where he leads the CollaborativePiano Program. One of Canada's finest collaborators, he is a frequent partner ofCanada's vocal elite and continues to perform in leading concert halls across NorthAmerica. From 1999-2010, he was répétiteur, assistant conductor, and orchestralcontinuo player with the Canadian Opera Company where he had the privilege ofworking on more than 35 productions.

Andrew Wan, violinConcertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (MSO) since 2008, Andrew Wan isalso Assistant Professor of Violin at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, ArtisticDirector of Les Solistes de l’OSM, and member of the Juno and Opus award-winning NewOrford String Quartet. For the 2017-18 season, he served as the Artistic Partner of theEdmonton Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Wan has concertized extensively throughout the world, appearing at Carnegie Hall, theKennedy Center, Taipei’s National Theatre and Paris’ Salle Gaveau in chamber musicperformances with Juilliard Quartet, Daniil Trifonov, Vadim Repin, Emanuel Ax, Gil Shaham,Marc-André Hamelin, Jörg Widmann, and Cho-Liang Lin. Charles richard-Hamelin, pianoSilver medalist and laureate of the Krystian Zimerman prize at the 2015 International ChopinPiano Competition, Quebec’s Charles Richard-Hamelin stands out as an important pianist ofhis generation. He has appeared at prestigious festivals including La Roque d’Anthéron(France), Prague Spring, “Chopin and his Europe” (Warsaw), and the Lanaudière.He has played under the baton of renowned conductors Kent Nagano, Antoni Wit, VasilyPetrenko, Alexander Prior, Giancarlo Guerrero, Christoph Campestrini, Lan Shui and Jean-Marie Zeitouni. Charles is a graduate from McGill University, the Yale School of Music, theConservatoire de Musique de Montréal. As a soloist, he has performed with the mainsymphony orchestras of Canada as well as the Warsaw Philharmonic, Sinfonia Varsovia,Singapore and Korean Symphony Orchestras.His first solo recording of Chopin late works received critical acclaim from Diapason & BBCMusic Magazine. The first volume of the complete Beethoven violin sonatas with AndrewWan was released in the fall of 2018.

Mooredale Youth OrchestrasOur youth orchestra programs give serious young musicians a chance to prepareorchestral selections and perform them at a high standard. Over 120 players aredivided into three orchestras. A friendly, non-competitive atmosphere prevails. Tuitionfees are $450 (Senior RCM8 & above), $425 (Intermediate RCM/Suzuki 5-7) and$375 (Junior, RCM/Suzuki 2-4) for the whole year and includes discountedsubscriptions to Mooredale Concerts. New members are welcome and may join almostany time, if space is available. The orchestras rehearse most Saturdays at MooredaleHouse, 146 Crescent Rd., Toronto M4W 1V2.

When possible, we promote unique cross-collaboration, with many of our MooredaleConcerts artists either performing and/or teaching our Senior orchestra players.Please see our Youth Orchestras page on our website for more details.

Bijan Sepanji, Junior orchestra conductor is a multi-facetedviolinist, performer and educator. As a member of the TonBeau String Quartet, he regularly performs newcompositions by up-and-coming composers as well asstandards from the classical repertoire. He trained atIndiana and McGill universities. His orchestral experiencesinclude performances with Indianapolis and Kitchener-Waterloo symphonies, as well as with Orchestra London,Hamilton Philharmonic and the Toronto ConcertOrchestra. He is also an active member of Sistema

Toronto, a social program aimed at bringing at-risk youth into a positivecommunity of orchestral music, choir and Pachanga (Cuban drumming).

Bijan’s interest in string pedagogy led him to study with Mimi Zweig and Dr. Brenner,two of the most respected string pedagogues in North America. His teaching principlesare based on the wealth of knowledge acquired during his studies in Indiana. Adecade of practical experience within the GTA, has further allowed Bijan to become avery effective and highly sought-after teacher and conductor for young people.

Deborah Pady, Intermediate orchestra conductor is headof the Music Department at Earl Haig Secondary Schooland Claude Watson Arts Program. Deborah received herBachelor of Music from the University of Toronto and wenton to complete her Post-Graduate Certificate in Educationat the University of Cambridge, England.

Deborah has performed as soloist, a chamber musicianand with various ensembles including Mississauga

Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Toronto. She has conductedensembles at various summer music camps and is currently engaged with theInterprovincial Music Camp as the String Orchestra conductor for ages 10-18.Deborah is a founding director of the Ontario Strings Association, which coordinatesannual educational clinics, festivals and a provincial youth orchestra.

Orchestras under her tutelage have consistently won top awards at Toronto’s KiwanisMusic Festival and Ontario Strings Association Festival over the years, in large part toDeborah’s commitment, and involvement to providing young players with opportunityto develop musical skills while enjoying the experience of being part of an enthusiasticteam of performers. Deborah is an alumna of the Mooredale Youth Orchestraprogram.

Larry Beckwith, Senior orchestra conductor is a creativecontributor to Canada’s musical life as a conductor, violinist,singer, writer, educator, and programmer. In 2003, hefounded Toronto Masque Theatre, which under his tirelessand imaginative artistic leadership from 2003 to 2018 –presented over 75 innovative programs ofinterdisciplinary performing art. Larry is currently theArtistic Producer of Confluence Concerts, now enteringits second season.

In recent years, Larry has conducted five Toronto Operetta Theatre productions andtwo for Opera in Concert, and in the summer of 2018, he conducted the successfulFestival of the Sound world premiere and subsequent Ontario tour of SOUNDINGTHUNDER: THE SONG OF FRANCIS PEGAHMAGABOW by Timothy Corlis andArmand Garnet Ruffo.

Larry is a committed educator, and runs the celebrated voice and strings program atthe arts-intensive Unionville High School.

The Dalí String Quartet’s passionate energy is poured into everything they do, generatingcritical and audience acclaim for their Classical Roots, Latin Soul motive. Anchored inboth Venezuela’s El Sistema and American classical conservatory traditions, this excitingyoung quartet combines the best of both worlds, embracing imagination and excellenceas central to its art form.

Dalí’s members are award-winning solo and chamber artists who have appeared atCarnegie Hall, toured widely in Europe and Asia, and recorded for Dorian, Centaur, andNaxos. As a quartet, they have been invited to perform with emphasis on the Latin-Classical connection for television, festivals and presenting organizations in North andSouth America. Recent engagements include concerts in New York, Philadelphia,Portland, Puerto Rico, San Jose, and Tulsa.

Now based in Philadelphia, they trained at illustrious institutions: Cleveland Institute ofMusic, Indiana University Bloomington, Conservatoire de Musique de Genève, and theSimón Bolivar Conservatory Caracas. And in turn, the group is sought after for masterclasses and professional development workshops (National Repertory Orchestra, MiamiUniversity, Michigan State, the Universities of Wisconsin and Iowa).

The ensemble’s adventurous and entertaining programming includes new works forquartet with percussion, clarinet quintets in both Latin and classical styles, and anAmerican tour with gold-medal pianist Olga Kern. In 2004, they founded theInternational Music Festival, an admired chamber music and orchestral program thatdevelop the performance skills of young musicians up to semi-professional levels.

The quartet serves as faculty at West Chester University Wells School of Music as theQuartet in Residence, and is an IRIS Orchestra Resident Ensemble.

Paul Huang, violinRecipient of the prestigious 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant and 2017 Lincoln Center Awardfor Emerging Artists, violinist Paul Huang is considered to be one of the most distinctive artistsof his generation. The Washington Post proclaimed: “Huang is definitely an artist with thegoods for a significant career.” Recent engagements include the Mariinsky Orchestra (Valery Gergiev), Berliner Symphoniker(Lior Shambadal), Detroit Symphony (Leonard Slatkin), Houston Symphony (Andres Orozco-Estrada), Orchestra of St. Luke's (Carlos Miguel Prieto), and Seoul Philharmonic (MarkusStenz). This season, he will appear with the Nuremberg Symphony (Kahchun Wong). He hasseamlessly stepped in for both Anne-Sophie Mutter and Midori. Paul’s recital engagements included Lincoln Center's "Great Performers" series and a returnto the Kennedy Center where he premiered Conrad Tao's "Threads of Contact" with pianistOrion Weiss. He also debuts at Wigmore Hall, Seoul Arts Center, and the Louvre. Paul playson the 1742 ex-Wieniawski Guarneri del Gesù on loan through the generous efforts of theStradivari Society of Chicago.

Helen Huang, pianoHelen was born in Ibaraki, Japan of Taiwanese parents. She attended the Manhattan Schoolof Music, and then the Juilliard School, where she studied with Israeli pianist YohevedKaplinsky. Helen made her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age eight. Two yearslater, she went on to perform with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of KurtMasur, with whom she continued to maintain a professional association.Helen has performed with several major orchestras, including the Cleveland, U.S. National,Philadelphia, Saint Louis Symphonies as well as the New York Philharmonic, the LeipzigGewandhaus Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic. She has been on extensive tours withthe New York Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony, and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.She is the recipient of numerous awards including the 1995 Avery Fisher Career Grant.Helen has been a member of the Juilliard School faculty since 2008.

Our MissionMooredale is an established non-profit organization that welcomespeople of all ages to experience a wide range of educational,recreational, social and cultural activities. Supported by families andvolunteers, we build on a rich history of providing programs andservices to the community while embracing fresh ideas for the future.

Membership at Mooredale enables families or individuals to enrollin any courses, activities or clubs offered by Mooredale. Newmembers are welcome whether or not they reside in the boundariesof Rosedale-Moore Park areas.

Mooredale activities include: • Popular Fall, Winter and Spring sports for children• Recreational and special interest programs for children, youth andadults

• Pool Club and Swimming Instruction with Red Cross and Lifesaving awards• Liaison with Rosedale Tennis Club – offering tennis lessons duringSpring and Summer

• Concerts featuring outstanding artists and our 3 youth orchestras• Dynamic Preschool offering a full range of provincially licensed earlychildhood education opportunities for children 18 months to 5 years

• Summer day camps for children 2½ and up• Mayfair, Mooredale’s annual community outdoor fair held at RosedalePark since 1946

• A wide variety of special community events• Mooredale News, a newsletter sent regularly to all members
