Untreated Sewage Discharges to the Great Lakes

More than 24 billion gallons of combined untreated sewage andstormwater is dumped into the Great Lakes each year. Bacteria and vi-ruses in untreated sewage pose a significant health risk, and are amajor cause of Great Lakes beach closings and swimming advisories.

Among the leading contributors to sewage overflows: Leaking sewagepipes, malfunctioning sewage treatment plants and pump stations, and aging sanitary and combined sewer systems -- which carry rawsewage and stormwater runoff from streets, lawns and fields directly totreatment plants.

    Conserving Water

Some 40 million people living in the Great Lakes drainagebasin rely on the lakes for drinking water. A one-time gifrom the glaciers, the Great Lakes form the largest surfacefreshwater system on earth -- a vast but largely non-re-newable resource. As the pressure on fresh water mountsaround the world, the Alliance is working to ensure thatthese waters are maintained and protected.

    Invasive Species and the

    Great Lakes

e Alliance released a groundbreaking report in 2008urging a breakup of the Mississippi River and GreatLakes basins as the only way to permanently stop thedevastating Asian carp and other invasives from enter-ing the Great Lakes.

e Alliance report, Preliminary Feasibility of Ecologi-cal Separation of the Mississippi River and the GreatLakes, outlines six options for separating the water-sheds and ending the transfer of species between them.

e idea of restoring the natural physical barriers thatonce separated Lake Michigan and the rest of the GreatLakes from the Mississippi River continues to gain mo-mentum.

Coastal Conservatione Great Lakes and their attendant problems don'trecognize municipal or county borders, so why shouldwe? Our Coastal Conservation Program fills an import-ant niche by bringing together multi-jurisdictional

stakeholders to restore ailing coastal habitat -- the lakes'first line of defense against pollution and a safe harborfor fish and wildlife, no matter where it is.

We combine policy-making and scientific know-how tohelp landowners restore important tributaries and

coastal habitats that feed and nourish the Great Lakes. We'll help you assess your natural shoreline assets, de-velop restoration goals, obtain grants to fund projectsthat implement those goals, then help with project im-plementation. Our goal: getting projects off the groundthat would otherwise be stymied by the boundary

issues that can so oen divide today's multi-jurisdic-tional land restoration efforts.

    Great Lakes Education

e Alliance for the Great Lakes is dedicated to foster-ing an ethic of learning, appreciation and care for the

Great Lakes. We offer two educational programs: GreatLakes in My World, an educator resource for kindergar-ten through 12th-grade that addresses Next GenerationScience, Common Core and Great Lakes state learningstandards, and Adopt-a-Beach, a service learning andcitizen science program tailored to all ages.

    Sustainable Business

e Alliance recognizes that businesses can play pivotal

roles in environmental and social sustainability as in-novative agents of change. With this in mind, we havedeveloped an adaptive Sustainable Business Depart-ment to assist businesses in becoming better stewardsof the Great Lakes and the environment.

In business dollars, the Great Lakes are the catalyst tomore than $200 billion in economic activity each year.Protecting and enhancing the Great Lakes for genera-tions of people and wildlife as a whole system of com-plex and sustaining uses is not only critically neededand implicitly good -- it's also good for business. Moreand more progressive "green" businesses are provingthis every day, and we're helping them do it in the bestways they can.

Alliance Special PublicationsOur knowledgeable staff and consultants use their exper-tise to author and co-author special reports and otherpublications aimed at critical issues affecting the GreatLakes. Below find links to all our special publications.
