Shirley Cook w/ Eddie Baccus Sr.$15.00$15.00 Sunday 12/23 7:00 pm Sold Out

Home for the Holidays

Dynamic North Coast Jazz Vocalist in Special Soul Jazz Holiday Show!

Featuring: Shirley Cook-Vocals, Eddie Baccus Sr.-Hammond B-3 Organ, Cecil

Rucker-Vibes, Billy Artis-Guitar, & Perry Williams III-Drums.

Shirley Cook is a jazz vocalist with a style deeply rooted in the Blues and rousinggospel music. Cook has long had a romance with music and singing, that was firstinspired by her father’s side of the family who were gospel singers.

Born in Stotesbury, West Virginia, Ms. Cook moved to Cleveland with her familywhen she was 2 years old. By the time she was eleven, she was singing in a gospelensemble with her aunts, the Cook Singers, who performed for church and socialfunctions. Throughout her teen years and into adulthood, Cook continued to sing inchurch choirs with her aunts.

Ms. Cook officially began her professional jazz singing career in 1983. She workedwith some of Cleveland’s most notable jazz musicians including Carl “Ace” Carter, the first pianist to work with the Basie Orchestra after the count’s death. AceCarter provided Cook with her first work, and with invaluable insights into jazz andshow business. Organist Eddie Baccus Sr., who is noted for working with RahsaanRoland Kirk, has supported Cook since 1984. Shirley has performed extensivelywith Peter Dominguez, Hank Geer, Willie Smith, Neal Creaque, Lawrence” Jacktown”Jackson, Greg Bandy, Teddy Pantelas, Ray Miller and Reggie Pittman to name afew.

Ms. Cook’s style is subtle and relaxed, in a manner much like Carmen McRae’s. Herearly inspiration began when a friend Tim Swan lent her some albums by BillieHoliday; this opened Ms. Cook up to such inspiring singers as Abbey Lincoln whobecame Ms. Cook’s closet friend and mentor. Cook traveled with Abbey Lincoln,1996 until her death in 2010. Shirley Cook has been described as a dynamic jazzvocalist who has her own style with ballads and tempos. A Great Entertainer!

Eddie Baccus Sr.One of the senior statesmen of the Cleveland Jazz Scene, organist Eddie Baccus Sr.has set the standard locally since the early 1960's. Like the late great JimmySmith, Baccus is a virtuoso on the Hammond B-3, equally adept at soul jazz andbebop. In many ways Eddie Baccus Sr. has been to the jazz scene what the lateRobert Jr. Lockwood was to the local blues scene; he has been a leader, mentor, and the soul of the community for many years.

Early on his talent was evident as he was linked with another jazz legend, saxophonist Roland Kirk. Baccus and Kirk were schoolmates at the Ohio School ofthe Blind and their sessions together in the old Euclid and 105th area are the stuffof local legends. Kirk would go on to national acclaim before his untimely death inthe late 70's. Baccus stayed close to home and it has been our good fortune.

Eddie Baccus Sr. has been the bedrock of the Cleveland jazz scene and hisinfluence on fans and musicians alike has been invaluable.

Nighttown's Home for the Holidays

Dynamic Vocalist back home after several World Tours with an All-Star Lineup for Home for the Holidays at Nighttown!

Endowed with the kind of liquid phrasing and sheer wisdom that comes from depthof experience on the jazz performance campaign trail, Vanessa Rubin is an ever-evolving classic singer in the making. The development of a true jazz singer is along-range prospect, laden with learning experiences that forge the voice into atrue instrument, rich with passion, deeply invested in living through life’s joys andperils; such is the journey of Vanessa Rubin, jazz singer extraordinaire. Capable ofemploying the gamut of emotions, the mature Ms. Rubin can range from whisper toshout in the blink of an eye; from honey-laden ballads purring like a kitten, to uptempo swinging and scatting like a fluent saxophone, she delivers the goods.

Page 7: great dining | great musiclive.ezezine.com/ezine/pdf/640_2-2018.12.23.17.54.archive.pdf · 12387 Cedar Road (top of Cedar Hill) Cleveland Heights, OH 216-795-0550 Map to Nighttown

One of the surest tests of a jazz singer is her acceptance by skilled players; therelationship between instrumentalist and vocalist is so often fraught with distrust. Vanessa Rubin has never experienced such travails. From the time she joined theNew York jazz community in the early 80s, under the guidance of suchgrandmasters as Barry Harris and Frank Foster, Rubin’s acceptance has beenuniversal. Instrumentalists have always been impressed by her way around a song, her willingness to flow with their muse, and her innate ability to swing that music.

The list of great musicians who have graced her recordings and bandstands is quiteimpressive: Monty Alexander, Cecil Bridgewater, Kenny Burrell, Frank Foster, BillyHiggins, Etta Jones, Lewis Nash, Houston Person, Patience Higgins, Don Braden,Toots Thielemans, Steve Turre, Cedar Walton, Grover Washington, Jr., and JamesWilliams are just a few of the masters who’ve lent their skills to support Ms. Rubin’sartistry. More recently she has completed auspicious global tours with HerbieHancock, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and the Jazz Crusaders.

Travis Haddix began playing the piano at the age of seven in his home town ofWalnut, Mississippi, located thirty miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. The turningpoint in his musical learning experience came when he was eight, when thelegendary B.B. King came to Memphis and began playing daily at the studios ofWDIA. Travis was awed by King;s guitar virtuosity and he hung around the radiostation every day to learn all he could. Soon, Travis' piano playing fell by thewayside and was replaced by the guitar, which he plays on stage and in the studio.

Years later, the Haddix family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Travis, now abudding star, continued to refine his craft by singing and playing throughout the

North. The original "Moonchild", he earned the nickname from his beamingpresence on stage and his always broad smile and energetic, sexy performances, In1959, Travis moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he joined the D.L. Rocco Band andachieved regional notoriety that led to a prominent spot with the Little JohnnieTaylor group. Travis also contributed material to five albums by Artie "Bluesboy"White. His material is also covered by Artie “blues boy” White, Dickie Williams,Jimmy Dawkins, Michael Burks, Charles Wilson, the late Son Seals, and Lee ShotWilliams.

Haddix has received rave reviews in Living Blues Magazine, Blues Revue, RealBlues, Big City, Jefferson and Audience Magazine, and he has toured Europe since1992. His style evokes the sounds of the great Stax-Volt days, when the likes ofSam & Dave ruled the urban blues roost. His fifth release on Ichiban Records is ABig Ole Goodun', featuring the Travis Haddix band (together since 1988). Heproves, once again, that he is a fixture in the modern blues industry with songslike. "Make Me Say Please" , "From Bad to Worse", and the made-for-jukebox single,"(She Called Me) Knucklehead".

Travis received 4 awards in 1999. Best Male Blues Artist, Best New Blues Artist,Best Blues Entertainer and Contemporary Blues Artist Of The Year. Camille Bertault

It’s true that she is a young woman of her time with a tangle of solid roots. Herfather is an amateur jazz pianist and she has always sung with him on and off. Butat the age of eight, she sat down at the piano and set about the wholeconservatoire experience (Ravel, Debussy, Chopin, Scriabin) while developing apassion for the vocal stylists of Brazil (Elis Regina, Djavan, Cesar Camargo). Andshe also listened to Jeff Buckley, Björk, Fiona Apple, Léo Ferré, Barbara, SergeGainsbourg…

When she was twenty, she rebelled. She shut her scores, moved to a drama classand wrote and played pieces for children. “I started to sing in a cabaret style, somewhere between a narrator and actor. But it was jazz that bewitched me.” Bychance she ended up at the Paris Conservatory which gave her solid training inharmony, composition and jazz singing. Camille Bertault discovered the theorybehind her spontaneous creations, combined improvisation and her cabaret joys, came back to Ravel via jazz – “the pleasure of combining all the stages I hadpassed through”.

The next stages were natural: she filmed herself singing Coltrane’s part on GiantSteps and the buzz ensued. Soon afterwards in 2016 her first album, En vie [Alive],emerged. Then François Zalacain, head of American label Sunnyside, introduced herto Michael Leonhart and Dan Tepfer. Michael, a trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist would produce her new album while Dan would accompany her onpiano. “They’re both French-speaking and interested in the text,” enthuses CamilleBertault, who doesn’t want to make albums where the voice just serves as aninstrument. She likes lyrics to hold the limelight.

Singer Songwriter, Pianist, & Comedienne plays Music from

her Brand New CD "Sister Orchid" & more!

Live on the Nighttown Stage!

Conjuring the image of a lonely all night truck stop along highway 1 on theCalifornia coast, all but lost in the fog that comes creeping along the shoreline.. thisalbum speaks of the night, the outsider, the plaintive wail of those lost at sea. Sister Orchid was conceived in solitude, executed in darkness. It comes from aplace of quiet, a world of low lights and cool drinks, up against a hard wall. Anoasis of hungry eyes and easy promises, warm as a biscuit, the kind of place yourmother warned you against.

Nellie McKay has released six relatively accomplished albums, won a Theatre WorldAward for her Broadway portrayal of Polly Peachum in The Threepenny Opera, co-created and starred in the award winning off-Broadway hit Old Hats, and haswritten musical biographies around a compelling gallery of ladies - fromenvironmental pioneer Rachel Carson to the life, conviction, and execution at SanQuentin of the underdog Barbara Graham, and most recently The Big Molinsky –Considering Joan Rivers, as well as A GIRL NAMED BILL – The Life and Times ofBilly Tipton, named one of the Best Concerts of the Year by The New York Times.

A recipient of PETA's Humanitarian Award in recognition of her dedication to animalrights, Nellie is an annoyingly vocal advocate against war, capitalism and the two-party system that sustains it.
