How many times have you used a computer

today? Maybe you watched a video or looked

up information for a school project. These

powerful devices are everywhere. Computers

make many complex tasks easier. They might

be used for something as simple as typing and

storing a document. But they can also be used for

something as complicated as sending a spacecraft,

such as the Mars Rover, to Mars.

The First Steps

An astronaut spacewalks to fix a broken computer on the International Space Station.

The Mars Rover transmits data from 140 million miles (225 million km) away.

A ROBOTIC REVOLUTION

From the home to the workplace, from the military to the world of medicine, the latest robotic devices are taking over more and more of the work once done by humans. Researchers are also using robots to explore new frontiers in technology and science. Robots may not be human, but

they are being built today to interact with people in ways that even science- ction writers and lmmakers never imagined. e day may soon come when robots will not only do our work, but also be our companions and friends. e 21st century is about to experience a robotic revolution.

1984The world’s fi rst autonomous outdoor navigation robot, Terregator, is released.

You Can Do It!What Are Boogers and Snot?

Boogers are dried nasal mucus (mucus that forms in the nose). Nasal mucus (or snot) is produced by glands called goblet cells in your nasal passages. How does it become dry? When people breathe in, especially during the winter, they inhale dry air.

That’s one way that boogers form. They can also form when nasal mucus traps particles in the air. The mucus dries around the particle and hardens, a bit like a pearl forming around a grain of sand in an oyster. Capturing particles is what mucus is supposed to do. So having boogers just proves that your nose is working well.

SNOT COLOR CHART. The color of your snot can tell you a lot about your health. Check out this chart.

YELLOW SNOT. You have a cold: White blood cells are rushing to the site of the infection.

PINK OR RED SNOT. Blood vessels in your nose have broken, maybe from too much rubbing, blowing, or picking.

BLACK SNOT.You may have a serious fungal infection. Seek medical attention.

WHITE SNOT. You are congested: Infl amed blood vessels in the nose are slowing the fl ow of snot, so it loses moisture.

GREEN SNOT. Your immune system is fi ghting back: The mucus is thick with dead white blood cells, turning the snot green.

BROWN SNOT. You have probably inhaled some dirt.

PHLEGM is a mixture of mucus, saliva, and white blood cells. It’s produced by the lower airways such as the windpipe and the lungs. You don’t normally notice phlegm until you get sick and you cough it up.

Make your own fake snot:• Fill half a cup with boiling water.• Add 3 teaspoons of gelatin, then stir.

• Add ¼ cup of corn syrup, then stir.• Let it cool to form slimy, sticky snot.

When nose mucus is gooey and slimy,

that’s snot.

Nose mucus can be hard and dry...those

are boogers!

Molly was walking around the neighborhood when she saw the

soldiers heading toward her home. She knew right away that her

father might be in trouble. She had heard him talk about America

breaking free from Great Britain. She knew the British didn’t like

that idea. She began running toward the house.

TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION

One of the main reasons people wanted

to be free of British rule had to do with

taxes. Great Britain taxed Americans for

many everyday items, including glass,

paint, paper, books, and tea. The American

people had no

representatives in the British

government to

fight these taxes.

They became

angry about this

“taxation without

A Man of the People

Francis took his first international trip as pope in

July 2013, to Brazil. There, he celebrated World

Youth Day and said mass to three million people

on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach. He urged

people to spread their love and support to those

in need. Whether they are in a poor village or from

a war-torn country, he said, they are our brothers

and sisters and deserve our care.

Brazil has the largest Catholic population in the world.
