A HOuSE FuLL OF HEArtDo you have a “dream house” in mind? Maybe one with a gorgeous

view or a kitchen that a professional chef would envy? Grayhawk residents Jonathan and Holly Cottor had a dream house in mind. But their dream house wasn’t for them to live in and it wasn’t going to be found in even the most expansive real estate search. The house they envisioned was based on one that already existed very far from Grayhawk and it would take years of hard work to make the dream a reality.

Jonathan and Holly were living in England when their youngest son, Ryan, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a disease that is life limiting and incurable. The physical and emotional challenges ahead would be difficult for any family to manage, but were even more so because the Cottors were living across the globe from loved ones who could lend support. Fortunately, they were referred to Helen House, a facility in Oxford that offered respite and palliative care to children such as Ryan. Helen House became an oasis and a resource that was greatly missed when the family moved back to Arizona in 2003.

In the spirit of “if you build it, they will come”, Jonathan and Holly embarked on a mission to build a similar house in Phoenix. No easy task, especially

Ryan and his older brother, Ethan, to care for. But they knew what a place like Helen House could mean to families here. Children with serious illnesses have a myriad of physical and emotional needs that require very specialized care. The constant dedication to meet these needs can eventually affect parents’ health and even their ability to cope. Extended family may not be comfortable with or available to help with high levels of care and specialized equipment involved.

In 2010, thanks to a grant from St. Luke’s Health Initiatives, a bridge grant from Hospice of the Valley, land provided by St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and fundraising by The Board of Visitors and Junior League of Phoenix Care Card, the doors to Ryan House opened. Since then, thousands of children and parents have been guests and are never charged a fee. In 2013 alone, 52,488 hours of care were given. Keeping those doors open requires constant community support. The $2.4m annual budget is 100% funded by charitable contributions. Grayhawk Elementary School, where Ryan was a student up until last year, has offered tremendous support from the very beginning, organizing Student Council activities to raise awareness as well as various fundraisers. Several teachers even volunteer at Ryan House.

One of the key fundraisers each year is Run for Ryan House, a huge running event that takes place in DC Ranch. The 2014 run takes place on March 1 and is sure to bring out thousands of runners and spectators. This family-friendly event is made up of a 5K, 10K, Half-Marathon and Family-Fun Run as well as an expo area that is full of vendors and fun activities. What’s so great about Run for Ryan House is that it’s an opportunity for the entire community to come together and that anyone can participate, regardless of fitness level. But the best part of this action-packed day is that raising money for a worthy cause is at the core of it.

It’s hard to believe that all of this started with one family’s quest. In seeking out the best possible care for Ryan, Jonathan and Holly ended up helping so many families facing similar struggles. Ryan, who is now 12 years-old and attending 7th grade at Mountain Trail Middle School, also does his part to help others. With his quick wit and sunny disposition, he teaches lessons of tolerance to anyone he encounters and proves even with challenges, so much is possible and good in life. He uses a wheelchair to get around, but still accomplishes a lot. This semester he’s looking forward to being part of the Physics Club and Video Game Club. To say that our community is a better one because of the Cottor family is an understatement.

If new construction is the sign of a healthy economy, then Scottsdale seems to be making a nice recovery. It seems like everywhere you look,

something else is popping up. In past months we let you know about new developments in surrounding areas just outside of Grayhawk. But if you’ve driven down Scottsdale Road towards the 101 lately, you know there’s a lot of activity at the long-dormant “construction” site just across the street from Scottsdale Healthcare.

What you see rising from the desert wash is Jefferson at One Scottsdale, an ambitious project that will bring 750 units of luxury apartments to our neighborhood. Floor plans being offered are one-bedroom/one-bath, two-bedroom/two-bath and three-bedroom/three-bath, with prices starting in the $1,000 per month range. Residents will be able to enjoy an array of high-end amenities including a resort style outdoor area featuring swimming pools, spas, entertainment cabanas and grills. Most impressive is the 10,400 square foot clubhouse that will include: game room, state of the art business center, media room, well-equipped fitness center, chef-style catering kitchen and hospitality bar. The entire complex will be access controlled and has space designated for indoor and outdoor parking.

There are already a limited number of units available for occupancy and 322 more units are scheduled for completion in 2015. TDI Real Estate Holdings, LLC is the developer of the project. Gus Villalba, TDI Executive Vice President and Investment Partner, has this to say about the project, “We will be offering the market another superior product with unprecedented

amenities and an ideal location near employment centers and adjacent to the Grayhawk luxury golf course. Jefferson on Legacy will be the premier luxury multi-family project in north Scottsdale to meet a growing demand for upscale housing in this submarket, which is a major employment center for the region.”

Jefferson at One Scottsdale is located within the master-planned One Scottsdale. The 80-acre mixed-use property is planning 1.8 million square feet of specialty retail, dining and Class-A office space. Additional residential units of various styles will be offered, as well as up to 400 boutique hotel rooms. The corporate component is anchored by the Dial/Henkel North American Headquarters that has long been part of our community. It will be exciting and interesting to see the end result of this expansive project.

Several other luxury rental communities are being built in other parts of North Scottsdale just a stone’s throw from Grayhawk. A 275-unit apartment project at northeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Butherus Drive to be named Crescent Scottsdale Quarter is slated for spring 2015 completion. And our neighbors at DC Ranch are adding a new Camden Foothills, a 213-unit apartment complex currently under construction just behind the DC Ranch Crossing shopping center.

All of this development is sure to bring new jobs, new options and a whole new feel to Grayhawk and the surrounding area. Stay tuned!
