What new piece of technology did the team invent to create the impressionof no gravity in space?
The new piece of technology which the team invented to create theimpression of no gravity in space was the “light-box”, essentially
consisting of lights and the actor/actress on a tilt rig, which canbe maneuvered
Why did they need to create this? What benefits did it bring to the filmingprocess?
They needed to create this with lights andmovement to enhance the loo! and thereforeconvinced the audience to believe this is realwithout being able to identify specific pieces of "#$ used This brought a whole new level of
creativity and development to the film industry as ithad never been seen before on such a high level, todevelop a well designed and complex piece of technology
%ic! out an example of technological synergy
& technological example of synergy would be the sounds and music played in thebac!ground of the film to match with the camera's movements exactly, whichcreates a sense of emotion surrounding specific scenes within the film &nexample of this being when the character is in danger within a scene, a (uic!
high-pitched scene almost li!e a screech is played which creates a sense of fearusing hearing
What difference did the )*+ lights ma!e to filming?
The )*+ lights enhanced the character's loo! on screen, for example when thelight was focused on *arth more than the character it highlighted how thecharacter had little significance to what they were surrounded by space Thecharacter becomes a part of what surrounds them, which displays how isolatedthe character really is owever when the light was specifically focused on.ulloc! it showed her significance within the film, and how she is the only humanleft in space showing her she is almost hopeful, and determined to return bac!to *arth The light being flashed on the character shows a sense of panic fear, asit was (uic! and not a focused light relating to someone's thoughts of panic!ingto be (uic! and unclear to understand

$n which ways was the technology used in the filming process groundbrea!ing?
The technology in the film was ground brea!ing as it had never been seen orused before in any other film To understand this in more depth "uaron describeshis experiences when creating the film to be tough, as he was told it was
“impossible” to create such a realistic effect of anindividual being seen in space without any gravity"uaron describes the film himself to be “a process of trial and error, and little, little hints of hope, and also alot of mista!es”, along with saying that it wouldn'twor! The #uardian "uaron's technology had never been used in a film before and he describes it, asbeing “a leap into the un!nown” where by both himand .ulloc! were very unsure if the film would even be a success &dditionally"uaron tal!s about developing this technology to be a struggle - 0.ut then yourealise all that technology is 1ust a tool for the cinematic expression you want to
convey We explored every single available technology and saw it would notapply, but then you thin!2 345, if $ combine this with this30 highlighting that it too!numerous attempts and planning to final develop a high-tech piece of e(uipmentwhich would be used in the film
Three things learnt from the article
• We learn from the article that the )*+ lighting came from
cinematographer, *mmanuel )ube6!i )ube6!i's inspiration originatedfrom the visual effects used at a gig, where the actors had light shone ontothem whilst performing inside a “light-box” 7creens surrounded the actor
with the visual image, along with lights exactly in sync with the movementsof what was seen on the screen This created an effect where by a naturalflow between the two components was unnoticeable, as they wereperfectly tuned with one another
• &dditionally we learn that .ulloc! suffered from multiples in1uries from the
movements within the light-box, and the physical strain This is due to herbeing moved (uic!ly and abruptly, and eventually .ulloc! had no choice tovisit a physiotherapist, and described it to “put me bac! together”examining her twisted pelvis, and multiple bruises and cuts "looneyreceived more severe in1uries and .ulloc! states that “he had to get intothat rig every day e was only there for three wee!s, but #eorge had a lot
more to deal with than $ did0 owever both individuals persistedthroughout the creation of the film when using this new developedtechnology to create such a great and realistic effect
• &t first "uaron was put off by the use of so much technology as he
describes this as not the approach he originally wanted to ta!e whencreating #ravity $n the #uardian extract "uaron states - 0When $ realisedit was going to be so technological, $ was turned off, because that3s not the

process $ wanted to get into0, however he carried on with the developmentof the film using multiple attempts of trial and error
