We are grateful – three simple words, but they mean so much. Grateful to you our donors for giving of yourselves, your time, your passion and your commitment to serving sick and injured children. And this support has not gone unnoticed.
From purchasing vital signs monitors, cochlear implant tools to help the pediatric audiology department and portable ventilators to help patients leave the hospital to funding the future of the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba, you have accomplished so much. For the first time in the history of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, you have helped start the process to build our Pediatric Cardiac Centre, which will bring some of the care currently done out of province home where it belongs and help over 6,000 patients. You truly make a difference. Please take a few minutes to read about some of these initiatives in the following pages of this Gratitude Report. Thank you!
On the note of gratitude, I would like to especially thank Gary Rozak for taking on the role of interim president and CEO. Gary stepped in during our hour of need and he, along with our incredibly passionate staff, kept the Children’s Hospital Foundation running smoothly. Congratulations to all of you for not only succeeding but leading.
With gratitude,
Dean Schinkel Chair, Board of Directors
DEAN SCHINKEL AND STEFANO GRANDE
Report from the Chair, Board of Directors and
President & CEO
Dear friends,
I am very honoured to have been given the privilege of being the new President and CEO of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. After starting in fall, I took the first few months to meet with you – our key stakeholders – to learn why you give, what you would like to see happen and what our future should look like.
Through these conversations and the insight of our dedicated staff, we have identified key areas of improvement and advancement of the greatest needs of the Children’s Hospital. We are working towards an exciting future, but we can not do it alone. We need you.
You are a valued team member. We encourage you to visit our website at goodbear.ca, sign up for our e-newsletters to receive updates. Join us in achieving the next steps towards transforming child health care in Manitoba.
For the kids,
Stefano Grande President & CEO

5 WAYS YOU MADE AN IMPACT:
Equipment
VITAL SIGNS MONITORSWhen children are sick, they can have a hard time communicating what is wrong. Having the latest vital signs monitors allows our nurses and allied health professionals to receive up-to-the-minute information.
VENTILATORSHaving a sick child is not easy. Having a sick child unable to leave the hospital because of breathing difficulties is heartbreaking. With your support, portable ventilators were purchased allowing kids like Cameron the opportunity to feel sunlight on their faces once again.
AUDIOMETERThe audiometer is used to accurately measure the sensitivity of a patient’s auditory system (from the outer ear to auditory cortex) and generate an audiogram (hearing test) to define the severity of hearing loss by frequency. The audiometer is also used to determine eligibility for cochlear implantation and to measure outcomes in speech understanding post-operatively.
INFANT RADIANT WARMER These incubators provide warmth and regulate temperature for sick babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where open access is necessary. Your donations help provide efficient care for our most vulnerable newborns.
SENSORY EQUIPMENTGetting a medical procedure can be scary when children do not understand what is happening to them. With your support, sensory equipment was purchased to distract, and relax children from a distressing medical experience.

ALLERGY EDUCATION – NINJA APPHow do you educate kids about allergies? You build an app! Your support funded a tool that aims to improve the knowledge and skills of youth living with food allergies. Providing real-life simulations in a fun way, children answer trivia questions and for every correct level, they earn belts in a dojo.
AVOIDING NEEDLE FEAR It is estimated that up to 25% of adults have a fear of needles, with most stemming from childhood. To help reduce anxiety, funding was put in place to support a Child Life therapist at monthly pediatric clinics to provide clinician-led distraction and caregiver training during blood draws.
TRAUMA RESUSCITATION IN KIDSDespite improving efforts in the prevention of primary and secondary injuries, pediatric trauma continues to occur frequently due to vehicle collisions, sports injuries, falls and other accidents. Injury is the leading cause of death for Manitoba children. With your support, Trauma Resuscitation in Kids, a two-day Royal College course, was brought to Manitoba to train more people, and this will open the door for further training.
5 WAYS YOU MADE AN IMPACT:
Programs
HUMOR THERAPY – 35 YEARSResearch is proving that Child Life specialists and therapeutic clowning in particular have a significant impact on children in hospital. The humour therapy/clown program was established in 1986 and was the first of its kind in the world. Because you took the time to give, the therapeutic clowning program made 3,995 visits to hospitalized children and their siblings, improving not only their hospital stay but helping with the difficulty of being away from friends and family.
EVERY CHILD – EVERY TIMEChronic pain due to medical conditions is still often under recognized and under treated. It can be very disabling and may limit the child’s participation in school, sports and social life. Fortunately, with your support, Every Child Every Time aspires to improve the management of pain. Currently, they are working on a facility-wide policy on pain prevention, assessment and treatment as an overall five-point plan. This will transform health care in the future.

5 WAYS YOU MADE AN IMPACT:
Research
DR. ALISON DART – KEEPING CARE AT HOMEDr. Dart is one of Manitoba’s only pediatric nephrologists (kidney doctors for children). She leads a program that provides life-saving, intensive-care dialysis for critically ill children, and also travels to northern communities to treat children closer to home. In her research, she’s working with patients, researchers, health care providers and policy-makers to transform treatment and care for Canadians living with or at risk for chronic kidney disease.
DR. SHYAMALA DAKSHINAMURTI – SAVING BLUE BABIESInfants are referred to as blue babies from the lack of oxygen in their blood. Medication does not always work. Every successful experiment happens because you donated. This confirms they are on the right path. They expect to have designed, tested and confirmed the new drug for pulmonary hypertension within the next five years.
DR. AYESHA SALEEM – OBESITY AND TYPE 2 DIABETES Obesity has reached pandemic proportions. According to the World Health Organization, nearly two billion people worldwide were overweight and/or obese in 2016. Recent epidemiological studies have established a link between obesity and cancer though the underlying mechanisms are unclear. The primary focus of Dr. Saleem’s research program is to identify the cellular signals that regulate the relationship between tumor metabolism and host physiology. Without your support, Dr. Saleem would not have a space to do her research.
TREKKChildren are not small adults. They have unique differences that need specialized knowledge and care. As many as 40% of children who visit general emergency departments do not receive evidence-based treatment and up to 20% receive non-beneficial or even harmful treatment. Translating Emergency Knowledge for Kids (TREKK) is taking place right here in Manitoba because of your support. TREKK is a national network with a vision for every child to receive the highest standard of care, whether they are treated in a children’s or general emergency department.
DR. MAGIMAIRAJAN VANAN – BRAIN TUMOUR RESEARCH Brain tumours are the leading cause of cancer death in children. Currently, the most common forms of treatment are invasive surgery followed by an intensive combination of chemotherapy and radiation. Therefore, there is a strong and urgent need to develop new therapeutic strategies with the goal of maximizing survival while minimizing therapeutic side effects. With your donation, Dr. Vanan is getting one step closer.

5 Kids that Helped
ABIGAIL STEWARTOne year ago, Abigail Stewart decided to show other children at the Children’s Hospital that even though you have been through a hard time, you can make it and go on to do great things. So great in fact that after travelling 8,402 kilometres across Canada and to Disney World, making 54 speeches, and holding one massive bake sale, Abby donated over $22,520 to the Children’s Hospital Foundation. The money went to benefit the oncology unit – the unit that saved her life.
MEIKA UNRAUMeika wanted to give back. She created and sold bracelets for months and wanted to do something extra special with her colourful creations. To raise money for other kids, she displayed 40 pieces and sold out in just one day! She’s even received special orders and raised $360.
SAAJAN AND SUMAN This dynamic brother and sister duo donated money they received from performing a traditional Punjabi dance called Bhangra at an uncle’s wedding festivities. They raised over $700 and wanted to help the kids.
J.H. BRUNS BRONOS CHARITY HOCKEY GAME The amazing team and coaches organized a hockey game fundraiser to accept monetary donations and toys for the Children’s Hospital. All their hard work paid off with over $1,575 raised and tons of toys that brought smiles to so many.

MONTHLY: CAROL CORDER“I give monthly to the Children’s Hospital because Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) gave me a miracle. I cannot explain how important NICU is to me and my life. Children’s Hospital means the difference between life and death for so many babies.”
PLANNED GIVING: PAUL KAUPPILAPaul Kauppila’s great-granddaughter Kianna Monkman was born 13 weeks premature. At birth she weighed 2 lbs, 2 oz. and was immediately rushed into the NICU. For a time, it was touch and go. However, thanks to Kianna’s willpower, her family’s endless support and the skilled staff at Children’s Hospital, she pulled through. Paul wanted to give back to the hospital that saved his great-granddaughter’s life and so he chose to remember the Children’s Hospital in his will.
VOLUNTEER: GRANDMA MARILYNGrandma Marilyn is one truly loving soul. Since 2006, she’s been working on raising money for Branden’s Hope. Branden was her grandson who was born with Krabbe disease and left the earth last year. Through her making angels, the endowment fund continues to support genetic research.
GUILD: DONNA ASKEWHaving dedicated her life to helping sick kids, Donna knows first-hand just how important and necessary these funds are. “Being on the frontlines, it is ever obvious to me that all of the care and research necessary for the children is not without cost,” says Donna. “It is my mission to help raise these funds. Every dollar can help make a difference!”
5 Donors that Made a DifferenceINNOVATORS: ZOE RICHARDSON“Innovators proved to be a really unique collaboration between donors and doctors to identify and address research priorities for children’s health care. Being in a research lab and looking at the actual potential use of your dollars is very cool and really stirred up an excitement about the potential projects. The fact that it isn’t board-driven is also refreshing – doctors are pitching you what they see first-hand as priorities. It was also a great opportunity to meet other young professionals in the community and work as a team to determine how this grant would be used,” says Zoe. In 2018, Innovators raised over $40,000 to benefit research on blue babies in the NICU.
