SEPTEMBER 2015
Grateful in Christ…. I give thanks to God for each of you and the genuine faith and friendship that you have shared with me these past seven years serving as your pastor. I am for‐ever grateful. I recently accepted a new call to serve as the pastor at Kingo Lu‐theran Church in Milwaukee, concluding my tenure at Cross on Sept 13th. I believe that it is a good thing to go out on a high note, and together we have had many high notes. When I started here, our bishop asked that I help Cross heal from residual worship wars and past conflict. I was told that Cross had poor self‐esteem and needed to feel good about themselves. The healing work began, but I never once did this work by myself. In fact, none of us did. With prayer and commitment, we all began this healing work of rediscovering unity through Jesus Christ. While attending Pastor Kristin’s installation, Bishop Jeff noted a lighter spirit within the worshipping Cross community. Thanks be to God for blessings received and joy equally shared with all members and friends of Cross Lutheran Church. While I will miss all of you, I trust you and a new senior pastor will develop mission, ministry, and worship in ways that I could never imagine. That is both promising and hopeful. A new pastor will bring new gifts and insight, and that is always a good thing. And what a blessing you will all be to a new senior pastor! The good news is that Cross’ current staff and leadership are some of the best in our synod. I feel that the Mission Council, staff, and ministry teams are abso‐lutely able to help bridge this time of transition. Thank you for keeping them in your daily prayers; and, please… help out when asked or needed. That is the spirit of Cross already alive and well! Thanks be to God. My last Sunday will be Sunday, Sept 13. I know, it’s approaching quickly. The Greater Milwaukee Synod will help Cross with finding an interim pastor, and will also help with the call process. Please stop in my office, should you feel the need. I’m grateful for each of you. Always grateful in Christ, Pastor Carolyn Sellers Cross is Moving to Electronic Newsletter in October The Mission Council decided at the August meeting that the monthly newslet‐ter will be mailed electronically—through email. The newsletter is also available on our website. If you do not have access to a computer and would like to re‐ceive the newsletter through USPS, please return the form included in this news‐letter to the church office by Sept 13. Please, call the Cross office when and if your email address changes! Thanks!

Cross Celebrations and Prayers
We celebrate with Kaysen Jack Wendorf, who was baptized on August 9, 2015. Kaysen is the son of Kristopher and Christi Wendorf.
On August 22, 2015, we celebrated the bap‐tism of Austin Koldeway. Austin is the son of Tom and Erika Koldeway. We celebrate the baptism of Weston Smith, son of Bradon & Audra Smith, on September 13th.
We remember the friends and family of Russell Blyth who passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2015.
New School Clothes Kohl’s Grant Thank you for donating additional funds to the Kohl’s Grant which helped purchase new school clothes for a fam‐ily experiencing financial hardship. You can be certain the children are wearing their new clothes with big smiles on their faces.
Cross Archives An archiving team will begin the process of archiving Cross Lutheran historical information and documents that have been collected throughout the years. This is a slow process, but it will be worth every minute spent. If you would like to be a part of the archiving team, please let members of the Connecting Team know. Lynn Kocha, member of Cross and registered archiver, will help lead the way. Thanks, Lynn! If you have any important Cross Lutheran documents in your possession (for whatever reason) it would be helpful to share with the arching team. Thanks!
Have You Taken Control of Your Health Today? Life Line Screening will once again be at Cross Lutheran Church on Friday, October 2, 2015 offering safe, painless, non‐invasive preventive health screenings that are typically not a part of a routine physical. Five screenings will be of‐fered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries; abdominal aortic aneurysms; hardening of the arteries; atrial fibrillation; and bone density screening. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call 1‐888‐653‐6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/community‐partners.

September Lawn Mowing Schedule
Thank You Volunteers Sept 5/6 Steve Dietzel, Larry Kocha Sept 12/13 Doug Belot, Mike Ladd Sept 19/20 Jim Uebele, Norm Fitch Sept 26/27 Tim Gesteland, Darrel Eisenhardt
Landscaping at Cross Landscaping is needed near the bell tower, narthex en‐trance, and carport area. You may notice that the bell tower has already been power‐washed and is significantly cleaner! The Building and Grounds received three quotes and determined to contract with Reesmans for landscap‐ing. The total estimated cost is $6,500. Donations are ap‐preciated. Please write “Landscaping project” on the memo line of your check. The start date of this project most likely has happened already. Thanks for keeping up the outward appearance of our church building.
Computer Fund Need Cross’ computers are quickly becoming outdated. We consult with Kontney Computer Services; they have been servicing our system favorably and economically for several years. Having an up‐to‐date computer server/system is in‐credibly important given everything that happens at Cross. With that said, we need to raise approximately $13,000 in order to upgrade Cross’ computers/server. Additional gifts toward this fund are greatly appreciated. Please earmark “Computer Upgrade” on your memo line. Thank you. Ps. We are getting a second quote, recognizing the high quote from Kontney.
Fall Harvest Lunch for Seniors Saturday, Oct 17th, 3pm-4:30pm Seniors, 65+, are invited to the Fall Harvest Lunch on Saturday, October 17th at 3pm‐4:30pm. Enjoy a light lunch, music program with Su Ash Gustafson, and fellowship time. Please RSVP with the church office by October 10th.
Worship Volunteers Needed Dozens of people make worship happen every week‐end. Several long‐serving assisting ministers, commun‐ion servers, greeters, and ushers have recently retired. We are particularly in need of new volunteers to assist with: serving communion, ushering, and reading scrip‐ture (assisting ministers). Would you please consider this ministry? Thanks for making Cross a community that volunteers together! Call the office to volunteer. You will receive training (763‐6570).

Domestic Violence Awareness Domestic violence refers to a pattern of violent, emotional, and/or coercive behavior exercised by one adult in an intimate relationship over another adult or dependants. Domestic violence is not marital conflict, a lover’s quarrel, or a private family matter. It may consist of repeated beatings or more subtle forms of abuse, including threats and control. No person ever deserves abuse of any kind. Marital vows are not made to imprison people in abusive relationships. Love Inc Community Meal Program Thanks to Sandy Demjen who has served at the monthly Monday Love Inc community program for 12 years! THANK YOU! Sandy is retiring; we can’t say thank you enough for or‐ganizing and serving our community for all these years! With Sandy stepping down, members of Cross now have the opportunity to step up. The Serving Team (Susan Capozzi, Julie Gesteland, and Mary Larsen) are organizing monthly meal menus, as well as sign‐ups for meal preparers and meal servers. Families, individuals, ministry teams, confirmation small groups, men’s and women’s groups are able to serve the 4th Monday of any given month. Serving is easy. Show up at Love Inc by 4:30pm. Meal pre‐parers will drop off their food at Love Inc by 4:30pm. Prepare the food and have it ready to be served by 5pm‐6pm. Love Inc staff will clean up. It’s that easy.

Cross Logo Contest—Calling All Creators! If you love being part of the mission and ministry here at Cross Lutheran and want to share that love every day, you’re probably yearning for some Cross Swag. The Mission Council is looking into coming up with some new and fun ways to share your love for Cross through t‐shirts, water bottles, mugs, etc. We need YOUR help in creating a logo design for our congregation. So here’s your mission: come up with a design that portrays something that makes Cross special. All entries will be looked at by the Mission Council, and finalists will be shared for review and feedback. School Supplies for Lutheran World Relief Lutheran World Relief and Lu‐theran Churches throughout the world are committed to education development for all children in our country and world. Many girls are
not allowed an education in parts of Africa and Middle East. In other regions of the world, natural disasters or poor infrastructure keep children from receiving an edu‐cation. But Lutherans are changing that. Lutheran agen‐cies like LWR are building schools, equipping teachers, advocating, and sending volunteers to places where edu‐cation was once a privilege for some but now is an equal right for all. Lutheran World Relief is urgently requesting school kits for children in need throughout the world. Monetary donations are also accepted. Please drop your school kits off in the large box located in Cross’ lobby. Thank you for including the following items for each school kit:
70‐sheet notebooks of wide‐ or college‐ruled paper approximately 8” X 10½”
no loose‐leaf paper
One 30‐centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centi‐meters on one side and inches on the other side
One small (no batteries) pencil sharpener
One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)
unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band
Five black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); secure together with a rubber band
box of 16 or 24 crayons
One 2½” eraser
One sturdy drawstring backpack‐style cloth bag approximately 14” X 17” with shoulder straps (no standard backpacks)
Food Preparers/Servers Needed Monday, September 28th Please help prepare and serve meals at Love, Inc. the 4th Monday of each month. Check the bulletin board across from the
coke machine for menu and sign‐up sheet. Thanks for feeding our community!
Crisis Fund at Cross - Charitable Giving A Crisis Fund was established at Cross several years ago. That fund helps members of Cross who experience unforeseen financial burden. Health crisis, job loss, downsizing, divorce… no one plans for these things, yet they happen every day. This fund is one way that members of Cross help other members of Cross through financial care. ALL Crisis fund requests are CONFIDENTIAL. Only Pastor Carolyn knows who is making the request. The Serving Team is alerted of the request details in order to approve the request, but they are not given the family/individual’s name. Your special offering toward the Crisis Fund directly helps people in need at Cross. Thank you for helping those with financial need. Your check may be written out to Cross, with “Crisis Fund” on the memo line. Thank you.
World Vision Sponsorship children: Metheu, Clarisse, Salome Change a child’s life for the better… donate to World Vision. We sponsor Clarisse and Salome from Dem/Rep Congo and Mutheu from Kenya. They’re lives are very much a struggle, but you can change that through com‐passion, prayer, and donations. $35 a month will change the lives of these three girls. Education, vaccinations, mosquito nets, clothing, com‐munity development programs are made possible through your donation. Here’s how you can donate; 1. Make a $35 check out to Cross (memo: world vision); 2. Sign up on the Mission, Ministry, and More insert
sheet in the weekly bulletins; 3. 3. Sign up on the World Vision Board located at the
Mission Nook near the parking lot entrance.
Operation Cereal Box Cross donated 170 boxes of cereal to the Love Inc food Pantry. We fell short of our 300 box goal. While our underachievement is deflating (given the membership size of this congregation, 300 boxes should have been highly achievable), this should not deter us from reaching further goals. Feeding our community is a most vital mis‐sion. Please… remember there are hungry people in our con‐gregation and community. While you may fall asleep with a full tummy, there are numerous children and adults IN Burlington who cannot afford decent meals a day.
