7th grade Sci-Ber text section “How Does Density Affect The Earth?”

What I know about this topic

What I need to know about it

What I learned from the written text and experiments

What I learned from the graphics or data

Density has something to do with how heavy something is.

It could be a way to figure out how much the earth weighs.

X-rays work because bones are more dense than other parts of the body.

o How do scientists use density to make a model of the inside of the earth?

o How do scientists figure out the density of the inside of the earth if they cannot go there?

o There is a formula for calculating density density = mass/volume

o If the mass of one object is greater than another, the object will sink. The reverse is also true.

o I learned how to calculate density.

o More dense objects settle toward the bottom or center of an object that is spinning.

o Earthquake waves help scientists figure out the density of different layers.

o The pictures on the page about earth’s structure helped me see how size and mass work together to calculate density.

o The interactive visuals that included labels when I hover over words helped me visualize what I would never be able to see with my own eyes.

Questions I’m still not sure how earthquake waves help scientists calculate the density of the interior of

Synthesis of text and graphics/data

The size and the mass of an object determine its density. More dense items work their way toward the bottom while less dense items stay toward the top.
