    12-16 years 17-20 years 21-29 years 30-39 years 40+ years

    How old are you?

This graph shows that 7 people aged 12-16 years of age answered my questionnaire, 3 people aged 17-20 years of

age also answered my questionnaire and 1 person 40 years and over answered the questionnaire. This allows us to

get a indication as to what our target audience should be as we are able to see how many people actually took the

time to answer a psychological horror questionnaire which indicates to us what age range of people are generally

interested in the psychological horror genre. This then allows us to create the certification for our film as we are

aware of what age range is interested in that genre. From this questionnaire we can see that teenagers are mostly

interested in psychological horrors however, with the content in my film 12 years of age is to young as it contains asuicide and mental elements that are to scary for them to handle and as hyperodermic needle theory states

children get influenced and injected with what they have seen and it could influence children 12 and under to

inappropriate things due to the way they have been affected. This is why from this research we have decided to

have create a 15 certification film. The BBFC state that in the horror genre our film can contain Strong threat and

menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised. They also state that there may be a frequent use of strong

language and they also state Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. This is

relevant to our film as there will be a strong use of language and violent scenes to appeal to a mass audience and

wider age range however it will not contain the requirements of an 18 as it will be to much of a fearsome film and isunlikely to appeal to our mostly female target audience because they prefer more subtle horror films.

    Male Female

    What gender are you?

This graph shows that 4 men answered our psychological horror questionnaire and 6 females

answered. This shows me that more females are interested in psychological horror films then men as

more females filled out my questionnaire. This allows us to see who to target our film at and create a

target audience for our film. This has caused us to create a mostly female based cast for our film, as

the main characters are mainly female in our film so it will appeal to a female audience. However, our

film will also appeal to a male audience as stereotypically horrors are generally generated with men

and it will have some squeamish elements to it that men generally enjoy, however with thecertification being a 15 it also appeal highly to females as most females do not like watching films that

are to scary and are therefore most likely to watch a 15 as they know it will be enough for them to

handle as it cant contain high levels of violence and swearing. This is the uses and gratification theory

as men stereotypically get entertainment and escapism and so do women. Although, this is also

binary oppositions as it shows the difference in what men like in a horror against what females want

to get out of it as men usually want more violence and crime.

    Yes No

    Do you watch psychological horrors?

This graph shows that 8 people answered yes to watching psychological horrors and 2 people

answered this. This shows us that there is a gap in the market for this genre as this genre does appeal

to people and we can get a target audience to market at. This is uses and gratification theory as it

shows that people will watch psychological horrors for entertainment as that is what people generally

watch films for and people find them entertaining to watch.

    Entertainment Escapism

If yes what purpose do you watch them for?

This graph shows that 6 people answered they watch psychological horrors for entertainment and 2

people watch them for escapism. This shows me that the psychological horror genre is versatile as

people watch it for different purposes. This is uses and gratification theory as people watch films for

entertainment as they enjoy the buzz they get out of them however, there are so people who watch

them for escapism to make them feel away from the world when watching them and take their mind off

reality. This shows us that the psychological horror that we produce has to allow the audience to be part

of the narrative so they feel escapism and feel like they are part of the story. This also is enigma code asit creates a mystery for the audience to follow and feel apart of.

    Mysterious Characters Death Enigma Versimlitude

What are the stereotypical conventions (expectations) you expect to

    find in a psychological horror?

    Male

    Female

This graph shows that 2 males expect to find mysterious characters in a psychological horror film and 2 females expect to find mysteriouscharacters in a psychological horror film, no males expect to see death but 1 female expects to see death, 1 male expects to see enigma being built

up and 2 females expect to see enigma in a psychological horror also. 1 male and 1 female expect to see verisimilitude in a psychological horror.

This shows us that both male and females prefer to see mysterious characters such as anti-hero and villains this shows that using this in my film

will appeal to all audiences which is a good thing as we can get a mass audience for our film which will generate a higher profit earning. This also

shows propps theory as it shows they want mysterious characters which usually consist of a villain which has mysterious elements to it as they are

usually doing something bad before they get caught which creates dramatic irony to the audience and makes them feel part of the narrative. Also

a anti-hero can be a mysterious character as they are tricking the audience into believing they are good when actually they are the villain or with

the villain in the narrative. This also shows enigma code as it creates a mystery for the characters to follow. It is also evident in the graph that one

female expects to see a death in a psychological horror, this is good because we have included a suicide within our film and as females will find it a

stereotypical convention it will enhance the genre of a psychological horror, as females are our main target audience this also uses the uses andgratification theory as they can get entertainment out of watching this psychological horror and using a death will help them indentify the genre of

the film. The graph shows that male and females like enigma to be built up within the narrative, this is important because it engages the audience

and keeps them wanting to watch more of the fi lm, this is also good as it will appeal to both genders which allows our film even though it is female

based to get the custom from males as well. Verisimilitude is also important to both men and women as it is important they feel they can relate to

the narrative and find a connection to the characters within the film. This creates enigma because it allows them to follow the narrative which will

constantly be a mystery as they will always be wondering what happens next. By analysing what both men and women want to see in a

psychological horror it allows me to widen my audience to appeal to a mass audience and include elements that both genders will enjoy seeing.

This shows us that all this stereotypical conventions need to be included as different people expect to find different things as different people get

different things out of watching psychological horrors. This emphasises the importance of keeping to the stereotypical conventions in this genre of

film as people expect to find these things in there as it is what appeals to them and draws them in to watch it. This is uses and gratification theoryas it shows the stereotypical conventions used to get entertainment out of watching psychological horrors.

Dark lighting & Shadows Music Set & Props Characters

Which of the following conventions do you think is the most

important aspects of a horror movie?

This graph shows me that no one believes that dark lighting and shadows are important aspects of a horror

movie however, 7 people believe music is, 1 people thinks setting and props is and 2 people believe it s

characters. This shows me that music is a very important convention to be used in our film to create tension

and suspense and allow the audience to share emotion with the characters as music creates escapism. This is

uses and gratification theory as it allows the audience to feel escapism within the narrative of the film andalso the music tells a story which allows them to feel emotions towards the characters. This is enigma code

as music creates enigma to the characters and make them feel on edge when the climax is building up.

However, this is also binary oppositions against the enigma the music creates as opposed to the audience

being able to immediately identify the genre of the film by hearing the music. This again is uses and

gratification theory as it allows the audience to indentify the genre of the film. This also shows that setting

and props need to be appropriate for the genre so people feel connected with the film so they can share the

    characters emotions.

What types of camera do you expect to find in an

    opening sequence of the film?

This graph shows that 5 people answered close-up shots which they are expected to find in a opening sequence,

1 person answered mid-shot, 6 people answered long shots, 4 people answered establishing shots, 1 person

answered jump cut, 3 people answered extreme close up, 2 people answered matte painting, 5 people

answered over the shoulder shot and 1 person answered two-shot. This shows us that close up shots, long

shots, establishing shots and over the shoulder shots are crucial in our psychological horror opening sequence

as most people expect to find these shots which makes it appealing for them to watch. Close up shots are

generally used to emphasis something that the audience needs to see and as we are producing a psychologicalhorror it shows us we could include a close up shot on a part in the opening sequence that is significant to

create tension and build up suspense for what is going to happen later on. Long shots and establishing shots are

generally used in a opening sequence to set the scene which allows the audience to familiarise themselves with

the setting and the significance of the setting in the opening sequence. This is enigma code because it builds up

mystery for the audience throughout the film. Over the shoulder shots create suspense and tension to the

audience which again creates enigma as they are following the narrative throughout the film. This is also uses

and gratification theory as it entertains the audience as they are engaged in the film and captured within the

    opening sequence.

Panning Tilts Tracking Zoom Crossing the line Crab

What types of camera movement do you expect to see?

This graph shows that 3 people expect to find panning camera movements, 1 person expect to find tilts 3

people expect to find tracking shots, 2 people expect to find zoom used and 1 person expects to find

crossing the line camera movements. This shows us that throughout the film we should use a range of

camera movements in order to engage a audience and add a new effects throughout the film so the

audience stays engaged. Panning and tracking shots are usually used to show movement so the audience

feel they are in part of the action of the film and zoom is usually used to create the scenes that make you

jump which is a stereotypical convention of a horror genre film. Tilts are also used to create power to

show the difference within characters and the binary opposition in characters against the power they

    hold over certain people.

    Villain Hero Donor

    (character who

    provides aspecial service)

Helper Dispatcher False Hero Princess Father (person

    who rewards

    the hero)

What characters do you expect to see in a psychological

    horror?

This graph shows that 9 people expect to see a villain in a psychological horror, 3 people expect to see a hero, 1 person expects to see a donor, 3 a

helper, 1 a dispatcher, 6 a false hero and 2 a princess. This shows that people expect to see the characters used within Propps theory to create a

narrative within a film and allow them to related to the characters. Stereotypically a horror film will have a villain which makes the film scary and puts

fear into the audience, also a false hero who tricks the audience into thinking they are a hero and are for the good which makes them feel on edge

because they feel they have been sucked into a trap that the false hero has sucked the other characters into as well. A helper is also often used in a

psychological horror if there is a happy ending, this is because there will be a character that helps the hero allow the victim to overcome whatever theyare going through this allows the audience to feel connected to this character because the helper is a bodied version of the audience as the audience

would probably give the hero the same advice to help the situation. A donor is not frequently used in a psychological horror unless the victim needs to

be diagnosed with any sort of mental health issue etc. When this happens, it allows the audience to get reliable information about the round character

in the film this then allows them to understand the narrative more as well as the character. The often isnt a princess in a psychological horror, this is

because this character doesnt fit in with the genre and the audience would not be looking for this type of character within the film as with a father. By

adding these two characters in it could affect figures for our psychological horror negatively as people may find it unrealistic as they wouldnt usually

associate these characters with psychological horrors. There maybe a dispatcher within a psychological horror depending again, on the narrative of the

story. Propps theory is useful to use within our film to indentify what characters to use this is because it avoids treating characters as if they are

individuals and reminds us they are merely constructs, some characters are indeed there just to progress the narrative. This is uses and gratification

theory as it creates escapism for the audience as they become a part of the film and share emotion with the characters. This shows us what characterswe have to include in our psychological horror in order to make it appealing to our target audience.

Yes- Creates tension Sometimes -False sense security No- too early

Do you expect a sense of enigma (mystery) during the

    opening sequence, if yes why?

This graph shows that 8 people said that expect to see enigma in the opening sequence because it

creates tension, 2 people answered sometimes because it creates a false sense of security and 2 people

said no because it is to early. This shows us that enigma code is crucial to use in an opening sequence to

engage a audience and make the film appealing. This shows us that tension needs to be created in our

opening sequence and make the audience feel unsecure and on edge as that is generally what horror

films tend to do in order to make the audience feel scared and distract them from anything else in their

mind and allow them to focus on the narrative of the film. This is uses and gratification theory as it

allows the audience to get escapism as they feel they are part of the film but also indentify what genre

the film is from the opening sequence due to the camera angles and effects such as music and lighting.

This is also entertaining for a audience as it allows them to enjoy the film as they are so deeply wrapped

    up in the narrative.

This graph shows that 2 people expect to see a dis-equilibrum within a psychological horror as it gives it

structure and 6 people expect to see a dis-equilibrum because the story develops and 2 people do not expect to

see a problem within the narrative. This shows us that equilibrum theory needs to be used within our

psychological horror film in order to create a narrative which the audience feel they can connect with. Also to

use enigma code in order to create a mystery within the film so that the audience can follow the build up to the

climax which is where the dis-equilibrum occurs as something goes wrong which cause problems that the

characters try and over come which takes the audience on the journey with them. This is uses and gratification

theory as it takes the audience on a journey which creates escapism and enteratinment

How do you expect the title to be portrayed?

This graph shows that 6 people expect the title to be ambiguous, 2 people expect it to be gothic and

dramatic and another 2 people expect to be scary. This shows us that our title should be ambiguous and

have many connotations that could be interrupted to the audience so they feel on edge from the start as

they are unsure of the story line in the film and what's going to happen next. This is enigma code as it

creates a mystery to the audience as to what the narrative of the film consist of and how the title may beportrayed within the film. This is also uses and gratification theory as it allows the audience to indentify

the genre by the name of the film as with a horror genre they are expected to be short and mysterious.

What sounds make you feel most frightened in a horror?

This graph shows that 2 people said that screams make them most frightened within a horror film, 1

persons said a wolf howl, 4 people said whispers and 3 people said a telephone ring. This shows how

sound have a massive impact sound effects have on a horror film as from a horror film people are meant

to feel frightened as it is the aim of the film and these things are done through digetic sound which allow

the audience to feel scared as it is a unexpected sound used. This creates enigma to the audience as it is

mysterious as to why these sounds occur and why they have been put there at that part of the film . This

shows us that we need to include screams, whispers and telephone rings in order to create tension andbuild up suspense to the audience. This also shows us that this is what our target audience look for in a

psychological horror which makes it appealing for them and suits their needs.

This graph shows that 2 people expect to find a fast sound track in a psychological horror 7 people expect to

find a subtle sound track and 1 person expects to find a slow sound track. This shows that a subtle sound

track should be used in our psychological horror film as this is what our target audience look for in a horror

film as it adds impact and creates tension. This is enigma code as the music creates a mystery within the

narrative of the story to the audience. This is also uses and gratification because people get entertainment

out of listening to the sound track of a film because they become familiar with it and it becomes unique tothe film which is another marketing factor of the film.

What is your favourite psychological horror?

This graph shows that The possession is 5 peoples favourite film, session 9 is 2 people, funny games is

one persons and the ordeal is 2 peoples. This shows us that we should get inspiration off these

psychological horrors because they have been very successful and they are what our target audience like

to watch and have conventional elements that we need to include into our film in order to make itappealing to our audience. This also shows us what our competition is and allows to see how we can

    Slasher' films & gore Dolls/Clowns/Children Supernatural Zombies/Vampires

Which theme do you enjoy watching the most?

This graph shows that 1 person enjoys watching slasher films and gore, 4 people like watching dolls,

clowns and children, and 5 people like watching supernatural themes. This shows us what conventional

elements we should include in our film as most people like to see unrealistic characters such as dolls

and clowns as they add more fear and give more of an impact as they believe they are real throughout

the feel. This is uses and gratification theory as these characters give the audience escapism as they

believe the fantasy of these characters are real. Also supernatural events gives the audience escapism

as it creates a enigma and allows them to feel away from the world because these are supernatural

events and wouldnt occur in their everyday lives. This shows us that these conventions are important

to our target audience to be used as it is what they enjoy seeing and it appeals to them.
