It was a short but profitable meeting this month with a

lot of discussion centred around the village fete and

stall holders. The worry as usual for any event

planned for the British summer is the weather but

hopefully 20 July will be bright and sunny. Among

the delights planned are a Capel bake off for children,

petanque, cocoanut shy, quoits, stalls offering craft

demonstration, micro-brewery beer tent, cakes, fruit

and veg, hedgehogs, Gardeners Association display

and stall, dog training and dancing. There will be

cream teas on offer, pizza, pies, and ice cream among

other culinary delights. We still need volunteers to

help with stewarding and general helping out on the

day so if you can offer even an hour please contact

Sally on 077304 75838.

Other more mundane but just as important issues were

also dealt with. The main hall will be painted during

the summer holidays and we are currently planning to

do this with as little disruption as possible to our

regular hall users. Sue Leaning, our wonderful

Lettings Secretary, will be working with the painters

to reduce the impact on organisations. Another issue

that has come up is the ladies’ loos! Now talking

about facilities is not something we normally do but

the Committee will be obliged to replace the doors of

the cubicles before long. We suspect that children are

swinging on the doors leaving footprints on the

windowsills. This in turn puts pressure on the hinges

that are now so twisted, the next time it happens we

will not be able to repair but will have to put in new

fronts to the cubicles. This is needless expense, and

anyone found wilfully damaging the doors or indeed

any part of the hall will be asked to contribute to cost

of repairs. On a more positive note, Jarvis Homes

have made a donation of £500 towards the cost of

building maintenance for which we would like to

thank them. The constant upkeep of the hall does

require a continual flow of money although thanks

should also be expressed to those who repair things ad

hoc as and when things crop up – i.e. tap replacement,

fixing locks etc. Thanks to everyone who helps out.

A date for our annual Garage Safari has been

confirmed as the 1st September and plans are well in

hand. One thing that has cropped up and was under

discussion at the meeting is the problem of second-

hand websites. Former trustees and officials are being

contacted by members of the public because their

contact details are still listed on ‘information’

websites. The village hall website, the Facebook

pages of both the hall and the Farmers Market all have

the correct and current contact details of village hall

officials and trustees. As indeed does the Parish

Council and local council websites. But we have

found wrong details on websites who purport to

provide information on venues, village halls etc. In

such cases, the website creators have been contacted

and the correct details given. But if you find any

mention of the hall with the wrong details, could we

ask that you contact a trustee so we can make

arrangements to get it changed.

Committee meetings are held as ever on the first

Tuesday of the month – if you have anything to put to

the Committee please contact a trustee and it will be

put on the agenda for discussion.

CAPEL-LE-FERNE FARMERS MARKET Community event run by and for the community

Now in our 13th Year

Every Tuesday 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

Village Hall, Lancaster Avenue, Capel-le-Ferne,

Folkestone CT18 7LX

Visit us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com

It was Easter 2004, 15 years ago, that we opened the

doors for the first Farmers’ Market in Capel-le-Ferne.

Tuesdays, we were told by “experts”, would not work,

as it was to near the weekend. As it was Tuesday

morning, it was the time the main hall was available,

the badminton ladies kindly moved their time and

Alison’s nursery just used the small hall.

Cherry and I had often discussed the possibilities of a

market with Jenny Barraclough and Gwen Spooner.

We began sourcing stalls and I visited St Margaret’s

Bay, where I found a very helpful man doing local

vegetables. This was Paul, who brought his

unbeatable free range eggs – (sadly no longer with us,

but Shirley, his wife, is still bringing eggs each week

to this day).

In these days of reduced council services, you will be

amazed to learn Kent County Council had a

department to advise rural communities, including

Farmers’ Markets. I remember meetings with other

market people at Springfield, Kent County Council

Headquarters, where we swapped ideas and got tea

and biscuits.

We managed to get all the core stalls, meat,

vegetables, bread and cakes, with a few craft stalls,

including Heather, still with us today!!!

In those early days, queues formed at 10am and it

wasn’t long before we had to rearrange the format, as

customers were waiting in the wrong queue. I do

remember the Baker selling out before he could bring

his produce into the Hall – (he came with a larger van

after that).

Perhaps some of you will remember “grumpy”

cheesemaker. He said grumpy was part of a

cheesemakers’ DNA. Later we sponsored him to

cycle part of India.

The Market was the “go to” place on Tuesday

morning. Beverages and toasties served by volunteers

led firstly by Gwen and then Ruby.

Running it every Tuesday, except Christmas, it has

raised a very considerable sum for the Village Hall.

Until recently it was run separately from the main

Village Hall Committee, although all profit has gone

to the Halls’ upkeep. I must mention the morning

setting up team and the clearer-uppers and all the

kitchen volunteers. We should be proud of our

volunteer led Market, still going after 15 years.

Debbie has kindly picked up the mantle, as Gwen,

Cherry, Jenny and myself stood down. So please

keep supporting, as it is your community and in these

times, it is good to support each other, because …

“Capel is a great to live – RIGHT”!

=================================================================================

There is an app called “Nextdoor”.

Have used it for a couple of weeks now and it’s a mind of information about local news. You can choose an

area Capel, Capel and Hawkinge, Folkestone etc.

And it’s the local people who put the news events on the site.

Take a look and you will see how it works.

Might be worth getting other villagers to join.

From the vicarage Here’s a question: is life something just to be got through, or something to be explored?

In Richard Bach’s story Jonathan Livingstone Seagull, Jonathan is always being told that seagulls only fly so

that they can eat. That doesn’t suit the young gull – he loves flying for its own sake, wants to know what a

seagull can really do, and so sets out on a voyage of discovery. I sometimes refer to that story at christenings,

the point being that baptism is also intended to mark the beginning of a voyage of discovery that starts in this

world and ends in the next.

I was reminded of this recently when my son mentioned finding a dead herring gull in the gutter on Dover

Hill. Something had hit it; it had a ring on each leg. Following discussion, we set out with bin sack and

gardening gloves, retrieved the body and tapped the number on the ring into the computer. Suddenly, Our

Gull had a story to tell.

We learned that GR94363, as Our Gull was known, had been trapped and ringed as a two-year-old in January

2015 at a tip at Pitsea, Essex. At some point Our Gull flew the Thames Estuary, and then the English

Channel. He or she was spotted near Boulogne in August 2017, inland at Curgies, near Valenciennes and the

Belgian border in December 2017, and finally back on the French coast near Le Touquet in August last year.

Jesus once said that though five sparrows are sold for two pennies not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight.

Our Gull now rests from his or her journeys in this world in a corner of the vicarage garden; remembered

both in this world, and in the next. Brian

Rock and Rolls Royce at our D-Day event – Sunday, 9th June

Join us at our D-Day 75th Anniversary event on Sunday

9 June, when we will be welcoming some great

musicians and some fabulous cars to a very special free

event here at the site .

The Memorial site at Capel-le-Ferne will be welcoming

the singers of the Folkestone Rock Choir and the

talented young musicians of the Kent Youth Jazz

Orchestra (KYJO) for two hours of great music,

starting at 1pm.

We will also be welcoming the South Eastern Section

of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club, who will be

visiting the site to enjoy a picnic and show off their

highly polished, lovingly cared-for machines against

the impressive backdrop of The Wing and The

Memorial. Last year’s visit by the Rolls-Royce owners saw an impressive variety of these iconic vehicles arrive at the site,

from carefully restored vintage cars through to modern day head-turners.

Their proud owners – and other visitors – will this year be serenaded by some great music by KYJO and by the

Folkestone Rock Choir, set up in 2011 as part of the national network of rock choirs.

The group meets at Folkestone School For Girls every Tuesday evening at 8pm to sing feel-good, uplifting rock

and pop songs. There are no auditions, and choir members don’t have to be able to read music – just love

singing.

Both groups are well respected and promise to provide great entertainment to mark the anniversary of D-Day

on 6 June 1944. While the Folkestone Rock Choir is getting ready for its first visit to the Edinburgh Fringe

Festival this summer, KYJO will be playing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra at the Deal Festival on 29

June.

All the usual attractions of the Battle of Britain Memorial, including The Scramble Experience and The Cockpit

Café in The Wing, will be open as usual and admission to the event is free. There is a small charge for parking.

Hello Everyone. At the May meeting our speaker for

the evening was John Rivers who teaches First Aid, he

told us the difference between a Heart Attack and

Cardiac Arrest. He went on to show us, what to do if the

patient was unconscious and not breathing and how to

do CPR, using models and how to apply different

pressures to the adult model, using one hand over the

other and pressing with the heel of the hand, and with

the child model, using just one hand and the baby

model, using just two finger pressure to the beat of the

tune “Staying Alive”. He said how important it was to

keep the CPR going while someone phoned for an

ambulance and get a Defibrillator. John demonstrated

how the Defibrillator will guide you through the steps

needed and inside is a package with a pair of gloves,

scissors to help cut away clothing if needed, a shaver

for shaving away hair on the chest that will be in the

way of the electrode pads, a small towel to wipe away

sweat and make the area dry before applying the pads.

John gave honest and sometimes amusing answers to

the many questions he was asked and a lot of the

members felt so much more relieved and less jumbled

of what to do by his explanations. The Defibrillators

cost around £800 each but as he points out very cheap

when it comes to saving lives. John said in Seattle the

success rate is very high as they have Defibrillators

everywhere compared with such a few in Britain. John

was thanked for his demonstration which will remain

with us and received a very big round of applause.

It was now that time of the year for voting on the

resolutions, this year we decided that the decline in

Rural bus services and Don’t Fear the Smear test, were

the most important things.

Christine handed out one of her riddle quiz sheets with

20 questions on Insects, Beetles and Creepy Crawlies to

small groups of members, with lots of whispering and

puzzled faces and giggling trying to get the right

answers and lots of ‘ oh yes of course’ when she

revealed the answers to us.

Jean informed us that the jumble sale held in the village

hall during April made well over a £1,000 for the Royal

Marsden Hospital Charity.

Gwen’s part in the sponsored knitting made over £70

for the Rainbow centre, well done for all her hard work.

The Capel W.I. darts team played in a darts tournament

and were very pleased with themselves for winning the

event. They then went on to win 8 out of 10 of the raffle

Become travel savvy with unique bespoke travel

safety training for Kent’s young people Young people in Kent can now prepare for their

adventures abroad by signing up for unique travel safety

training that is only available in a limited number of

counties throughout the UK.

The Education People, a Kent County Council Local

Authority Trading Company (LATCo), has teamed up

with a former Metropolitan Police close protection

officer to provide bespoke courses aimed at teenagers

and young people planning to travel alone or with

friends.

Duncan Johnston, director of Kent-based Worldlywise

Ltd, will deliver the course and will cover topics

including which items to pack, how to stay safe and

healthy, and how to avoid becoming a victim of crime,

as well as giving basic first aid training. The first course

will take place in Maidstone, just before schools break

up for the summer holidays and is being promoted using

the hashtag #BeTravelSavvy.

The one-day course is designed to give youngsters the

skills and knowledge necessary to travel the world safely

and is not in any way intended to put them off

embarking on a global adventure.

Mr Johnston, who worked for national security in

Special Branch during his 30-year career in the police,

said: “It’s important to remember that the probability of

something bad happening while you’re away travelling

is very low. However, there have been a number of

stories in the news recently about holidaymakers, and

young backpackers in particular, coming to harm while

abroad. The world is probably no more dangerous today

than it was when I was a teenager, but young people, and

their parents, are more aware of the dangers now and are

actively seeking advice on how they can stay safe while

travelling."

“The 'Education People' has been fantastic in supporting

us and working with us to get this course into schools so

young people can benefit from it, and we’re very excited

for our first course in June.

“I would never want to put anyone off travelling, in fact

I would encourage young people to travel as they are

likely to have some fantastic experiences and a course

like ours can equip them with information, advice and

skills needed to keep them safe and healthy and allow

them to get the most out of their trip, whether that’s a

few weeks in Europe or a year travelling all over the

world.”

Although some travel agents offer safety advice to

customers travelling abroad, The Education People and

Mr Johnston believe this course is unique as it is one of

only a handful in the UK aimed specifically at school

leavers and young travellers. The bespoke course will

also be tailored to offer advice specific to the

destinations attendees plan to visit, which they will be

asked to specify in advance. Parents/guardians are

welcome to join their offspring in the afternoon for the

first aid training and a short question and answer session

but the majority of the session, which costs £100 for the

full day, will be for young people only.

Mr Johnston added: “We want the young people to feel

confident speaking to us and raising issues they may not

feel comfortable speaking about in front of their parents

or teachers. However, we appreciate parents will also

have concerns and questions regarding their son or

daughter travelling abroad without them; and everyone

can benefit from some first aid training.”

Mr Johnston has travelled all over the world throughout

his career, including to Syria, Libya and Afghanistan. He

has worked with Prime Ministers, Presidents and

members of the Royal Family as well as accompanying

journalists to warzones. He drew on his experience of

developing risk mitigation courses, in conjunction with

working with the military, Foreign Office and private

sector security companies, for unarmed police officers

and civilian police staff working overseas, adapting it for

a younger audience travelling for pleasure.

James Roberts, CEO of The Education People, said:

“We are delighted to be working with Duncan Johnston

and Worldlywise Ltd to offer this course, which will

allow Kent’s young people to stay safe and healthy while

travelling abroad. We would encourage families to

register for this course sooner rather than later,

particularly if their sons or daughters are planning on

going away this summer, as we anticipate it proving

popular.”

The first travel safety course will take place at Invicta

Grammar School in Maidstone from 10am to 4pm on

Tuesday, June 25 and is open to young people from all

schools. To request a booking form please

email [email protected]. Please

DO NOT contact the school. Young people will gain

a Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (HABC)

accreditation for attending the course.

The Education People and Mr Johnston can also offer

travel safety training for teachers and school staff

preparing to take pupils on trips abroad. To enquire

about teacher training or having a course for young

people at your venue.

CANCER RESEARCH JUMBLE SALE

The organisers would like to give a big thank you to all the villagers who either gave jumble, attended, or bought

raffle tickets at the recent jumble sale at the village hall, in aid of The Royal Marsden Hospital cancer research fund.

Once again we had marvellous support from everyone, and managed to raise £1.005.98. It was good to top the £1,000

mark again. Hard to believe this was our 80th, the years have flown by, but it wouldn't be possible without all of our

team members pulling together and of course the generous residents of Capel who always support us without fail.

The money has been sent off to The Royal Marsden Hospital who continue to do sterling work, into treatment and

research for those in need. Who, after all, has not either had a friend, relative, or perhaps even themselves suffer the

trauma of a brush with this awful disease? That's why it's important for us to continue raising funds in whatever ways

we can.

So many people go out of their way to make it a success that it is impossible to thank them individually, they know

who they are, and perhaps they will accept this as their public thank you.

We would now like to call upon you all to start putting anything you think we may be able to sell to one side for our

next jumble sale on 12th October. Don't worry, we will remind you nearer the time about who to contact or where to

take it.

Best wishes for a warm and pleasant summer, and thank you once again for your continued support.

The Organisers.

WITH THE BETTER WEATHER NOW! ... BE AWARE ... BE ALERT

Burglars are often opportunists who will target an open window, an unlocked or open door or valuables on display if

they think they can get away with it.

Did you know? Most burglaries happen on weekdays, in daylight. Make sure you:

** keep keys, cash and expensive items out of view

** use timer switches on lights and radios to make your home look occupied

** keep gates locked and boundaries secure

** lock away bikes, tools and garden items which could be stolen or used to break into your home.

You could also:

** security-mark items including bikes, mobiles and laptops

keep receipts, IMEI numbers and serial numbers safe (also see: mobile phone theft)

** photograph and insure expensive or unique items

** install a safe, bolted to the ground or a wall, or use a safety deposit box at the bank

** register important items for free on the national Immobilise database – this can help us return them to you if they are stolen

and then recovered. https://www.immobilise.com/

Places where you store tools, machinery and other valuable equipment offer easy pickings to thieves. You can reduce the risk of having your property stolen by:

always putting tools and equipment away in a locked place

disabling lawn mowers and other machinery when not in use and chaining items together to a solid anchor point

using closed shackle padlocks and installing alarms and security lights.

If your property is stolen, you have more chance of getting it back if it is recovered by us if you write down some details (make,

model, serial number and identifying marks) and have pictures of the items.

You can also:

register your valuables on Immobilise - the national secure property database

security-mark items with a UV pen or a forensic marking solution

keep hedges and fences maintained and gates locked

secure hanging baskets to their brackets

If you've been a victim of a burglary, you may need additional help and support.

CRIME SAFETY UNIT, DOVER. Advice for residents or landowners

Kent Police, local councils and other partner agencies work together to deal with crime and anti-social behaviour where you live.

If you see it, report it. If you are affected by nuisance vehicles, call Kent Police on 101 with details including:

• The dates and times that you have been affected by nuisance vehicles

• The location of the vehicles and what they were doing

• Descriptions of the vehicles and people involved

• Whether the vehicles were ridden to the area, or whether another vehicle was used to transport them.

The information you provide will help us to identify those responsible and take action to prevent them causing problems in the future.
