A community of givers
Thank you to all families who have supported out recent fundraising efforts. First, we had Tree Day—and raised $50 to buy trees from WoodiWild. Next, the SRC raised $130 at Jeans for Genes day (and donated that money to children's medical research).
Finally, last Friday the P&C held Red Nose Day, in which they raised $287! Thank you to the many parents who donated red sweets (and to Carrolline, our crossing lady) and the P&C for organising our latest event.
Staffing news
Welcome to Mrs Vaishali Patole, who will be teaching K Eora whilst Mrs Echkintana is recovering from surgery.
Congratulations also to Mr Damien Riddle, who has been merit selected to the permanent GA job (General Assistant).
GEPS is the best!
Did you know that, out of the 8 Year 6 students who sat the selective high school test from GEPS—4 of them got in; and 2 others are on the reserve list. That means that 75% of applicants from GEPS met the measure for a selective high school… Go GEPS!
AND… it’s just not in academics that we do well… Over 40 students were selected to go to the zone athletics carnival last week. We were so proud of them (see except by Miss Krasinski later in
the newsletter).
Play time is crucial! There is a great deal of research about the benefits of children playing and socialising at break-times. We have bought a range of play equipment to give students things to do at lunch. The P&C have also purchased balls, skipping ropes—and donated one of the soccer goals so that students are playing productively! Thank you P&C.
Artist in residence! Famous illustrator, Tannya Harricks, is working on a mural in our garden, based on the book Mallee Sky. She has been working with students and will complete the work in the next 2 weeks!

Eid Mubarak! to families who celebrated
Eid al-Adha I hope you had a wonderful time with family and friends.
K Mabo—Term 3 This term Kindergarten have been learning all about how living things grow and change. They have learnt that all living things need water, food, sunlight and shelter to grow and survive.
Kindergarten have also been very excited about making connections to the real world by observing their very own class chicks hatch out of eggs. They have been fortunate enough to observe the life cycle of chicks and track their development from the hatching phase. Kindergarten observed the mathematical concept how long it takes for a chick to hatch out of an egg (time), we made predictions and graphed data and used ten frames to demonstrate our understanding.
They have also been responsible for caring for the needs of
our chicks by cleaning their home, feeding and providing
adequate water throughout the day. Students have had the
opportunity to learn the safest way to handle the little
chicks and hold them gently to observe the changes in their
growth each day.
K Mabo have also been writing descriptions about the chicks in their chick diaries
as they observe them. Read some of our observations below:
Each newsletter we’ll be having a problem of the week. Families can work together to solve this
problem. Solve the problem in multiple ways and submit your answer to Ms Beede’s box in the
office. We look forward to seeing your results and will share some in the next newsletter!
Round and Round the Circle (From https://nrich.maths.org/11228
I started with a clock without hands or the minute divisions . The 12 was
replaced by a 0 and the numbers placed outside the face.
I ruled lines joining up the numbers.
I started by counting in ones and I got a 12-gon (that is a 12-sided polygon - if you like long words you can call it a dodecagon).
Then I ruled lines counting round in 2s. And I got .....?
Perhaps you do not need to put the numbers round the circles.
I tried 5s (wow!) and 6s (well!).
Each time I go on drawing lines until I get to the point where I first started.
Then I tried 7s, 8s, 9s, 10s, and 11s.
Something interesting was happening.
Why don't you try it? What patterns do you notice emerging?
Which shapes are the same? Can you think of a reason why?
Can you see a connection between the number in which you are counting around the circle and the number of sides in the shape you are making?
Try a couple of patterns with your family. What did you discover?
Cut off your explorations and place them in Ms Beede’s box in the office. Don’t forget your name!!!!
40 GEPS students
are Zone
Athletics
Champions!
We are very proud to announce that 40 students attended the Zone Athletics Carnival on Thursday 8th August at Olympic Park, Homebush. All students performed extremely well, and all participants received a deafening roar from the sidelines as they ran, jumped and threw themselves into competing against 12 other schools. You are all AMAZING!
Well done to each and every one of you! It was incredible to see so many students passionate about trying their best in discus, shot put, long jump, high jump and running. What a success!
Congratulations! Results for REGIONALS out soon!
