14 Dec 1810 Petition submitted by George Newton, Fayetteville, NC

14 Dec 1810 [Petition made by residents of all counties between NC and Richmond; the following petition from residents of NC]

The Speaker & other members of the Virginia assembly Your memorialists have with pleasure witnessed the progressive improvements of their native State, they with approbation look to the policy by which your honourable body have been governed for some time past, in giving your aid to & promoting every attempt that is made by the Citizens of this State in improving the means of facilitating the surplus produce of the State to its different markets, In either removing those difficulties which nature has thrown in the way of internal navigation or shortening by means of public roads the distance from the most remote parts of the state to the best markets it affords the planter & farmers: Believing that at all times it will be pleasing to the Legislature to progress in the important business of improvements so laudably & usefully began, Your petitioners the Citizens of North Carolina, bordering on Virginia, beg leave to State to you honourable body that a publick road leading directly from the north Carolina line to Richmond to pass Roanoke at Taylor's ferry, Meherrin river at Saffolds Bridge Nottoway River at Stephen Jones bridge, by the burnt ordinary in the county of Nottoway, from thence a direct line across Appomattox river to Maddy's Tavern in the County of Chesterfield & from thence to Manchester would be of great public utility to your petitioners and a large portion of the Southern parts of this State. While it would give them a better Road than they have at present to market it is believed that the inhabitants of Mecklenburg & Lunenburg would Save a distance of fifteen or twenty miles in the distance to Manchester: it would place the only two markets acceptable to the planters & farmers in that Section of the Country at nearly equal distance from them, thereby puting it in their power to give the preference to that market at which the most liberal prices should be given for their produce, it would produce a competition between Petersburg & Richmond which would afford an effectual check to a manopoly on the part of either, by putting it not only in the power of your memorialists & others of this State, but the people of North Carolina to travel to Richmond or Manchester with equal ease & Conveniance to themselves as to Petersburg - Your memorialists beg leave to State with the present roads leading to Richmond, this competition cannot be effectually produced only at certain seasons of the year & then but for a short time first because the distance to Richmond to people traveling to market, is one days journey more than to Petersburg, the present Roads considerably worse than those to Petersburg & in the winter season when travelled to Richmond they become impassable, from which circumstances it follows that the planters & farmers are compell 'd to carry their produce to Petersburg, when the markets are much better in Richmond when if a Road was opened the way proposed the markets must always agree, for the roads proposed would be at least as good as the road to Petersburg & it is believed would bring the seat of Government of Virginia within five miles as near to each inhabitant in the Southern Section of this State, and a large portion of the people of North Carolina who come to the Virginian markets: when at this time a great number of them have to travel from twenty to twenty five miles further to Richmond than to Petersburg. Your memorialists therefore pray that a law may pass authorising the opening the road as prayed for: and for the purpose of indemnifying individuals throug whose land it will pass that either the expences be defrayed by subscription by a lottery or that a company may be incorporated to open a turnpike Road, or by any other mode that your honourable body may prefer, and that commissioners may be appointed who Shall be authorized to mark out the ground and nearest rout for the road to run ....

Weighing In. A friend confessed to me why she was now taking a serious interest in dieting. It seems that recently her husband had asked her, ''Do you realize there are 30 pounds of you that I'm not legally married to?" Copied

History of Class of 1913

The history of the Class of 1913 will probably mean to this institution what the history of the Sixteenth Century means to the world. Perhaps this seems a broad and sweeping statement when one considers the wonderful revolutionary spirit and numerous progressive movements of that era - it was indeed an age of awakening. The century could not have b'een given a more fitting name than the Renaissance, or rebirth, for truly all things seemed to be reborn. It was a period of intellectual activity - and hence, of literary achievements, of unifications, of reformation, of greatly needed inventions, of explorations, and of astonishing discoveries.

In like manner, our class has proven itself most efficient in all these movements. For have not we during our four years career brought about changes of great moment and in many new and untried fields made rapid progress and advancement? Even as Freshmen we were stirred to enthusiasm by new ideas and high ideals, and thence on our entire course was flooded with excitement and anticipation.

To prove the foregoing statements concerning the wonder wrought and to impress more strongly the perseverance and ability of the illustrious 1913 Class, let us present some incidents of our college life.

0

One thing which has proven a potent factor in the development of the fame of our class was the ( ) excellent literary talent exhibited by some of its members. Have not Bessie, Carrie Tom, and Geneva astonished the Faculty and students by their brilliant poetic productions? Already many among our number have been moved to prophesy that in the near future their work will equal, if not eclipse, Longfellow's, Whittier's, Poe's, Wordsworth's, and Tennyson's.

While the literary talent was thus advancing and giving new impulse to the entire college life, beauty was being depicted through art as by a fresh inspiration. Have not Marie's productions in art so amazed every one that even the most wise and learned have been forced to admit that they cope well with the Madonnas of Raphael and the frescoes of Michael Angelo?

Not only have we made advancement from a purely literary standpoint but in other ways as well. As a proof of the spirit of reform prevalent among us, we have brought about highly beneficial changes in our form of student government. Though necessarily passing through a revolution, we were able finally to throw off the reign of ''Faculty jurisdiction" and place our keeping in the hands of a much more satisfactory body, ''The Student Association".

Likewise, one of the most advantageous changes, perhaps, is the unity which has been effected by our class. Tell us, pray, how could the unification of Germany and France have been more important, or more productive of immediate results, than the recently established intimacy between our class and W. F. C.? This new bond may be made stronger still - judging from the effect produced by our having attended the Baraca Banquet there. Just all that was said and done has not been and probably may never be revealed to us, but one thing, well known, is that immediately upon our return, Grace and Eugenia added to their regular work a new course - that U of domestic science.

Meanwhile, in the midst of all the stir and excitement caused by changing conditions and novel ideas, wonderful discoveries were being made, the value of which to us is inestimable and we are confident it will be to those who shall follow us. Have we not after oft repeated trials found to our great elation that the laboratory keys will unlock Mrs. TWITTY'S phone? And should the present state of affairs continue to exist, we predict that soon Fannie SCOTT and Cam, while upon one of their evening spoons, will add some important facts to the science of Astronomy.

In addition to these things our class has remarkable inventive geniuses, the influence of whose works will prove a blessing to those who shall come after us. The ways we have invented for deliverance from trouble, and consequently from that much dreaded monster, the ''Faculty Meeting", will compare favorably with the inventions of Whitney, Fulton, and Bell. And to us the art of cooking without heat or the aid of a fireless cooker is of much more importance than the steamboat or telephone.

While marvelous achievements along other lines were being accomplished, the work of exploration was not neglected. On the first of April, 1912, the entire class being filled with the spirit of adventure, and also a desire to celebrate 'some people's birthday', summoned the Faculty and set out on an exploring expedition, and thus mapped out completely a new and shorter route to Dickerson. As a result that city has become famous as a picnic ground, thus affording to Captain ELMORE a greater amount of revenue that he received from us at that time.

It is said that Shakespeare never repeats, but some of our class, perhaps more daring that the rest, wishing to be entirely original, undertook to repeat this celebrated journey the following year; consequently our class was honored with having made another discovery - that too much repetition of mischievous acts leads to demerits.

In athletics, too, we have won great renown. Perhaps this can be best illustrated by our Freshman game of basketball with the Class of 1910. Surely, in size and experience we were excelled by the Senior Class, but in manner and, in our own estimation, of ability, we were unsurpassed. With Rassie as our honorable captain we marched into the ball ground feeling that we should gain such a victory as was won by Cromwell and his "Ironsides" at the Battle of Naseby. Possibly this might have been true had not one of our members, Maggie R., distracted the attention of her team by repeated acts to test her equilibrium of performing experiments to corroborate laws of gravitation. The score we think unnecessary to record, but one result was, that very forcibly came to our minds the famous saying of the wise old colored deacon, ''Blessed are dey dat 'specs nuffin, case dey ain't gwine to be disappinted".

After giving this brief and general historical sketch of our lives here we trust that one may conceive slightly of our great power and achievements. May the works which we have performed and the development which has come from our labors be an inspiration to the classes which shall follow us. To these, we hope our experience may be of invaluable worth, and may they prosper and make progress, as have those centuries which have followed the sixteenth.

Snapshots From the History of Granville June 16, 1936

By Miss Jeanette Biggs

At a County Court of Please and Quarter Sessions, begun and held for the County of Granville at the Court House on the first Monday in November, 1790, Thomas RUDD, aged about 15 years, & son of Field RUDD, having been brought into Court, and it having been suggested that his left ear was bit off by a Horse Ordered therefore that the same be recorded .

•••• • •••••••• • •••• • Clerk of Court GRAHAM explained the desire to have this fact recorded by the fact that in those days, some crimes were punishable by the severing of an ear and that the family wanted it of record that the

youth did not lose his ear as punishment. U Hays Collection, Granville County History II, Vol. 34, Pg 37, Richard H. Thornton, Oxford, NC

Charlotte And its Advantages to Horner Cadets As a religious, social and educational center, Charlotte stands pre-eminent.

During the great CHAPMAN-ALEXANDER meeting, which stirred Charlotte with a religious fervor to an extent it had never before experienced, Dr. CHAPMAN made the unqualified statement in one of his sermons that Charlotte was as clean a city, morally, as he had ever visited in all his many travels around the world.

No one will gainsay that it is a city of beautiful homes, magnificent schools, and crowded churches; that its office buildings and stores are as handsome and modernly equipped as can be found in any city of the South; that its brilliantly lighted streets and perfectly maintained thoroughfares evidence the most competent kind of municipal administration; that its street car facilities speak of capable, experienced management; that its social past and future rest with a people of cultured, patriotic and hospitable tendencies, of lofty ideals, and of very progressive inclinations.

One compelling reason for the removal of this school to Charlotte, after the barracks were destroyed by fire in 1913, in its former home at Oxford, was Charlotte's enviable character as a clean, pure, sanitary, religious community, and yet one where the best in public entertainment - lectures, conventions, musicales; the drama, and vaudeville -could be enjoyed by the students at moderate cost.

It is not the policy of the Principal to deny the boys reasonable privileges in the matter of attending public attractions which are instructive and elevating and when they do not interfere materially with the school work; and during the school term many invitations are received to both private and public receptions, when consent is readily given the boys to accept, singly or in a body, as the invitations may read.

The Principal is always glad to give permission for the boys to avail themselves of the hospitality of private homes whenever invitations are extended, for dates not interrupting their school duties.

Charlotte has no saloons. It has, however, churches of all denominations, a number of hospitals, a splendid Carnegie free library, many commodious and up-to-date hotels, unexcelled telephone and telegraph facilities, a magnificent Y.M.C.A. building with an enthusiastic organization, and it is the most favored city in the Carolinas in railroad facilities . Four distinct lines ofrailway enter the city - the Southern, Seaboard, NorfolkSouthern, and Piedmont & Northern (electric). More than sixty passenger trains arrive and leave the city during every twenty-four hours.

It is here that the famous Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was signed on May 20, 1775. In the celebrations of that patriotic event, the Homer cadets participate upon special invitation.

As a school center Charlotte is famous. For the education of girls and women Queens College is widely known. Their faculty and students are enrolled from many distant states. It is situated on the car line running out to the Homer School.

Health According to government reports the death rate in Charlotte is the second lowest in the United States. Malarial conditions are entirely absent, and a thorough system of sanitation makes for the best health. The water supply is excellent and carefully supervised.

Climate Charlotte is midway between the mountains and the sea, and also midway between Richmond and Atlanta. It enjoys a delightful climate. The winters are comparatively mild, and not subject to the severe blizzards of the mountain sections of Virginia and North Carolina. High winds, destructive storms, or sudden changes in temperature are disturbances which seldom visit this section. The summers are never excessively hot. Her climate is ideal and one of the most valuable natural assets of the city.

Location The Homer Military School is located three miles from Charlotte in the beautiful residential section known as Myers Park. Street cars run every twenty minutes, connecting the school with the depots of all the railroads coming into Charlotte. The school is located on the highest point in Myers Park, having an elevation of about eight hundred feet. The delightful ride through this truly beautiful residential suburb of twelve hundred acres, with its paved highways and picturesque homes is one that Charlotte people and visitors take purely for recreation and pleasure.

The campus of 50 acres has a frontage of800 feet on the east side of Selwyn Avenue, which is a ninety-foot boulevard with concrete sidewalks and driveway.

The main building is situated at nearly the center of the campus, between Selwyn Avenue and Briar Creek, about 800 feet from the street.

Here in this quiet, restful location the students are completely isolated from the agitation and disturbances of city life, and yet so favorably located that they can enjoy every advantage it has to offer conducive to student life.

The social and physical advantages are worthy of very serious consideration of parents who wish to place their boys in a school where the atmosphere and every surrounding will tend to ennoble his character.

Murphy's Law for Genealogists

The public ceremony in which your distinguished ancestor participated and at which the platform collapsed under him turned out to be a hanging.

When at last after much hard work you have solved the mystery you have been working on for two years, your aunt says, "I could have told you that".

Your grandmother's maiden name that you have searched for, for four years, was on a letter in a box in the attic all the time.

You never asked your father about his family when he was alive because you weren't interested in genealogy then.

The will you need is in the safe on board the Titanic.

Copies of old newspapers have holes occurring only on the surnames.

John, son of Thomas, the immigrant whom your relatives claim as the family progenitor, died on board ship at age 10.

Your great grandfather's newspaper obituary states that he died leaving no issue of record.

The keeper of the vital records you need has just been insulted by a another genealogist.
