  • To Start, working from the center of the ball of yarn, create 9 Small Granny Squares.

SMALL GRANNY SQUARENote: The chart shows rounds 1-7Rnd 1: Ch 4, join.Rnd 2: Ch 1, Sc 8 into the circle, sl st into first ch st.Rnd 3: Ch 1, [Sc 1, sc 3 into next sc] four times, sl st into ch to join — 16 sc total.Rnd 4: Ch 2, [Hdc 1 into each next 2 sc, Hdc 3 into next sc, Hdc 1 into next sc] four times, sl st into 2nd ch to join — 24 Hdc total.Rnd 5: Ch 2, [Dc 1 into each next 3 Hdc, Dc 3 into next Hdc, Dc 1 into next 2 Hdc] four times, sl st into 2nd ch to join — 32 Dc total.Rnd 6: Ch 2, [Dc 3 into first Dc, sk 3] eight times, sl st into 2nd ch to join — 24 Dc in eight groups of 3 Dc.Rnd 7: Ch 2, [Dc 3 into sp before next Dc 3, Dc 3 into center Dc of next Dc3 group, Dc 3 into sp before next Dc 3] , sl st into 2nd ch to join — 36 Dc in nine groups of 3 Dc, tie off last st.Rnd 8: Join a strand from the outside of the ball of yarn and [sc 6, sc 3 into center corner DC from prev round, sc 5] four times — 60 sc total.Rnd 9: Work a second round of sc around all sts, working 3 sc into each corner — 60 total.

Joining The SquaresArrange the 9 Small Granny Squares in one larger square as foll: With a strand from the outside of the ball of yarn and using a slip stitch, join 1 square to each side of the ‘center’ square. Using the same method, attach the remaining four squares so they sit in the open corners, creating a large 9-square piece.

LARGE GRANNY SQUAREJoin strand from the outside of the ball of yarn to one corner with a sl st.Rnd 10: [Sc 46 across the 3 small granny squares to the next corner, sc 3 into the corner] four times — 196 sc total.Rnd 11: Ch 2, [Dc 48 across the 3 small granny squares to the next corner, dc 3 into the corner] four times — 204 dc total.Return to strand from the inside of the ball of yarn and join to one corner with a sl st.Rnd 12: [Work 3 Dc in corner st, (sk 2 sc, work 3 dc in next sc) 16 times)] four times — 68 3 Dc groups total.Rnd 13: [Work 3 Dc in corner st, (work 3 Dc in next sp) 17 times)] four times — 72 3 Dc groups total.Rnd 14: [Work 3 Dc in corner st, (work 3 Dc in next sp) 18 times)] four times — 76 3 Dc groups total.Rnd 15: [Work 3 Dc in corner st, (work 3 Dc in next sp) 19 times)] four times — 80 3 Dc groups total.Rnd 16: [Work 3 sc in corner st, work 1 sc into each dc] four times — 62 each side, 248 total.Rnd 17: [Work 3 sc in corner st, work 1 sc into each sc] four times — 64 each side, 256 total.

Tie off last st, steam block square.

FINISHINGFold square in half lengthwise and mark the halfway point along each ‘short end’ of the garment as it lays.

Sew up each short edge from the marked point to the open edge (leaving the area closest to the fold open, this will be the arm opening)

Wear the shrug by inserting your arms into the armholes and pulling it snug up against your back and neck.

LARGER OR SMALLER SIZESTo increase the size of the shrug, continue working the four rounds of Granny Squares plus the two rounds of sc until the square is the desired size.

For a smaller shrug, stop crocheting at the second sc round after each 4-round Granny Square section.

The length of the folded square should measure roughly 80% of the wearer’s under bust meas.
