Transcript of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren of Brevard County Brochure
Did You Know? One in every ten children in the US lives in a household headed by someone other than their parents. About 20% live below the poverty line, and less than 30% receive any public financial assistance for the child. Most have experienced the loss and grief associated with the absence, of the birth parents. None anticipated they would be raising
another child!
Within Brevard County 8,000 of children are being raised by some-one other than their parents, that’s enough children to fill 10 public
schools.
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren of Brevard began in 1994 as a volun-teer grandparent support group. To-day the organization provides support and service to over 1400 grandparents and their families, and is the only organization of its kind in
Brevard County.
“Welcome to the Family”

Relative Caregivers Grandparents Raising Grandchildren of Brevard provides intensive services that promote self-sufficiency, safety, health
and well-being of the child and family.
For many generations, extended families have raised children in their homes when birth parents were unable to do so. Through this type of child rearing, also known as kinship care or relative-care, children are often spared the stress and disruptive experiences associated with
the separation of their families.
Relative caregivers are important for
children because they:
· Provide love and nurturance;
· Provide a safe home;
· Let children live with people they know
and trust;
· Reinforce a child's sense of identity and
positive self-esteem;
· Help children make and sustain
extended family connections;
· Continue lifelong family traditions and
memories, and
· Support children in building healthy
relationships.
Our motto is “The Child First”
