PREP:Unless otherwise specifi ed, always use the best brush for the area you are painting. I have recommended sizes, but feel free to use what you are comfortable with. I like to use the Glaze brush for basing large areas, and the round and shader for smaller areas.

Seal both the shutter and the insert with the Multi-purpose sealer, then sand lightly. The shutter is paint-

ed with Hauser Dark Green. The insert is based with Blue Mist. Even though the design is an oval I found it easier to simple paint edge to edge on the insert.

That way, when you are putting the fi nished pieces together you don’t have to worry about any bare wood showing around the edges.

When the Blue Mist is dry, trace the horizon line and base the bottom half (grassy area) with Hauser Light Green. You will probably need several coats. Once dry, trace the main pattern elements onto the surface.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS:Using a 3/4" angular, fl oat wide fl oats of Warm White in the sky area for some nice fl uff y clouds. With the 3/4" angular fl oat Plantation Pine along the top of the grassy area.

Baecoat the design as follows:

Chair—Heritage Brick

Hat—Moon Yellow, ribbon on hat—Coral Blush

Pole and platform under birdhouse—Milk Chocolate

Birdhouse—Warm White

Roof on birdhouse—Heritage Brick

Hole in birdhouse-Lamp Black

Perch-Heritage Brick

Watering can—Graphite

Tote—Desert Turquoise

I added a crackle design on the chair back and seat with a rubber stamp from the Toxic cling stamp set using Soft Black. I use a makeup sponge to dab the Soft Black on the stamp. Use masking tape or post it notes to protect the surrounding area from being stamped. Be careful to not get it on too thick. Alter-natively you can use a dye based stamp pad, such as Stayz On, in black.

The chair is shaded with Soft Black. Shade under-neath the hat, on the spindles where the connect to the back, on the seat where the left spindle connects, around the tote, on the legs under the seat and where the chair rungs connect with the legs. Highlight the right side of the chair back with Terra Cotta. Also

Highlight the front of the seat and down the centers of the legs, spindles and rungs. I did not highlight the back rung as it would be pretty much in the shade.

The tote is shaded with True Blue and highlighted with Bahama Blue. Shade on the left side of the front, along the back of the left side section, inside the box and where the handle connects. Highlight on the right side of the front, on the left section at the front corner. Dry brush a highlight on the center of the tote front and down the center of the handle. Add wood grain lines with Soft Black, using a 10/0 liner.

The fl owers spilling from the tote are painted with the greens. I used all three, Plantation Pine, Hauser Dark Green and Evergreen. Using the stylus, dot Pansy Lavender fl ower on the stems. Once dry, randomly add smaller Warm White dots.

The birdhouse pole is shaded on the left side with Soft Black and highlighted on the right with Moon Yellow. Shade the platform along the left side and around the bird house with Soft Black. Highlight the front edge with Moon Yellow.

Shade the birdhouse under the roof-line with Graph-ite. Shade on the side of the birdhouse along the front edge with Graphite. Also add a Graphite shade to the left of the perch. The roof is shaded along the side/back edge with Soft Black. Dry brush some highlight streaks with Terra Cotta.

Highlight inside the hole with a c-stroke fl oat of Warm White. The detail lines on the birdhouse are Soft Black and Lamp Black.

The hat is shaded with Terra Cotta. Shade on the inside of the brim where it is hooked over the chair, under the ribbon and on the crown above the ribbon. Add some cross-hatching here and there to suggest that it is a woven straw hat. Shade the ribbon with Heritage Brick around the knot, along the right side of the streamers and where it curves around the brim of the hat. Also shade the left side of the knot. Highlight the stream-ers, right side of knot with sideloaded fl oats of Warm White. Dry brush Warm White to the center of the rib-bon going around the crown of the hat.

The watering can is shaded on the left and right sides with a sideloaded fl oat of Lamp Black. Also shade with Lamp Black on the spout where it connects to the can and on the handle where it connects to the can. Shade inside the top as well. The watering can is highlighted in the center by dry-brushing with Warm White. Float a sideload of Warm White on the top of the can and around the top of the spout. With thinned Warm White an a 10/0 liner add narrow highlights to the rim, the two bands around the bottom and the handle.

The detail outlining is up to you, you can do as little or as much as you like. I used thinned Lamp Black and the 10/0 liner to defi ne the diff erent elements of the de-sign. Since I did not line any of the grass, I did the detail linework before adding the grass and fl owers.

The grassy clumps are also done with all three greens. Add clumps around the chair legs, here and there in the foreground and along the horizon. Add Pansy Lavender fl owers to the background the same as the fl owers in the tote. Shade underneath the grass clumps and the watering can with Plantation Pine.

Allow your paint to dry thoroughly, then glue the panel to the back of the shutter, making sure your design is centered. Varnish the entire piece with several coats of Duraclear Matte Varnish.

To add some interest to the shutter I added the decora-tive upholstery tacks to the cross pieces. With a chalk pencil mark evenly where you would like to place them. Then using a very small drill bit, drill a hole for each tack. To keep them secure I dipped each tack in some tacky glue.

Attach a saw-tooth hanger to the back and you are all set to display your fi nished piece.
