Like you, we love our communities and want to see the people and places here thrive, now and forever.

Together, we give it forward.

Friends of the Foundation,

As we reflect on the year that has passed, 2020 will certainly be remembered as a difficult one. The pandemic disrupted our daily lives and continues to significantly affect the health and well-being of our region and our community. Last year also reminded us of the need to actively create equitable, inclusive communities for all people.

During this time of urgent need, we quickly brought partners together and created an opportunity for the community to collectively give to benefit our region. People who care about this place responded, giving generously to ensure our communities were supported.

We are also grateful for donor partners like you who are building community assets to benefit our region now and for generations to come. You are giving in a way that will allow our region to adapt and respond to needs and opportunities in the future.

As your Community Foundation, we will continue to come together with you and others as we work toward the healthy, resilient region we envision. Like you, we love our communities and want to see the people and places here thrive, now and forever.

Thank you for making this possible.

Responding in a Time of Urgent Need

In partnership with several other local funders and with support from

hundreds of individual donors, we led the creation of the Urgent

Needs Fund to mobilize giving and establish a funding resource to

support community efforts in response to COVID-19.

Throughout 2020, grants were directed to local organizations

providing vital services to individuals and families across our five-

county region, particularly those disproportionately impacted by the

instability and economic consequences of the pandemic.

Thanks to the generosity of all of those who’ve given, the Urgent

Needs Fund has been a boon to our region throughout this crisis—

supporting access to food, housing, and mental healthcare; funding

online and in-person educational programming; benefiting local

small businesses, Elders in our Native communities, and so many

others.

Thank you for helping us make a lasting impact in our region.

“This past year especially, the Community Foundation has helped KAIR when we were faced with what seemed like insurmountable odds.”

Cathy Somes, Executive Director, Kalkaska Area Interfaith Resources

Partnering to Support an Essential Early Learning Program

In early 2020, a difficult decision was made to discontinue the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP)

hosted by Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS). This move would have left 112 students without

access to early childhood education and $850,000 in annual state funding for our region at risk of being

permanently lost.

With data showing that only 44% of children in our five-county region are Kindergarten-ready, ensuring

continued funding for GSRP was essential.

Together with philanthropic partner, Rotary Charities, we worked alongside TCAPS and Traverse

Bay Area Intermediate School District to consider solutions that would ensure GSRP programming

continued for the 2020-2021 school year.

As a result, we were able to secure $70,000 in funding needed from various partners, including the Les

and Anne Biederman Foundation, Oleson Foundation, American Proficiency Institute, the United Way of

NWMI and $20,000 from Community Foundation funds.

It is because of donor partners like you—who entrust your giving to the Community Foundation to

meet our communities’ most pressing needs—that we were able to lead at this critical moment. Flexible

funding like this allows us to respond to community needs as they arise and ensure that we can continue

impacting our region now and when it’s needed in the future.

“We appreciate the collaboration of our partner organizations and support the community’s effort to find a sustainable, long-term plan for early childhood education in our region. When we work together, we can accomplish more than any individual organization can do alone.”

Dr. John VanWagoner, Superintendent, TCAPS

Building Collaborative, Cross-Sector Strength for Our Region

Publicly launched in October 2020, the Northwest Michigan

Community Development Strategy brings community leaders

together to move the needle on issues critical to our region.

With the Community Foundation as lead convener, the strategy

grew out of a need for strong, unifying, cross-sector leadership to

achieve transformational societal, economic, and environmental

change across northwest Michigan.

We worked alongside more than two dozen government, nonprofit,

business, and philanthropic leaders to bring this effort to life. Our

shared Strategy is now backed by a 40-member Coalition and

a Scorecard with 12 shared, measurable objectives to provide

accountability and transparency.

Coalition contributors work together to share information,

coordinate efforts, and align and leverage resources, including

actions such as:

• Building collaborative partnerships between business,

government, and nonprofit leaders and organizations.

• Securing public and nonprofit funding from outside our region.

• Advocating for public policy issues critical to our region.

To learn more and keep up with our shared Community

Development work, please visit: nwmicommunitydevelopment.org.

“The Watershed Center’s work requires addressing large, systems-based issues. Our work with the Coalition provides opportunities to engage with individuals, organizations, and communities that will help amplify our voice for clean water and accomplish large-scale change.”

Christine Crissman, Executive Director, The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay

Addressing Community Needs through Youth-Led Grantmaking

Our Youth Advisory Council (YAC) involves local high school students

as leaders and grantmakers across Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse,

Kalkaska, and Leelanau Counties.

To inform their grantmaking, YAC members use data from a Youth

Needs Assessment, updated every three years by surveying high

school students in our five-county region. The 2020 survey identified

mental health as a top issue for youth in our community.

Each of the five county-based YAC groups awarded grants to

Michael’s Place, which provides support and advocacy for youth

grieving the death of a loved one.

“The needs assessment was reflected in our YAC’s decision to

provide impactful grants to Michael’s Place and other organizations

supporting child abuse prevention, afterschool programs, and other

youth-led initiatives,” said Gina Thornbury, Program and Grants

Manager and YAC Advisor.

Other 2020 YAC grant recipients included the LIFT Teen Center in

Suttons Bay, PoWer! Book Bags, and Child and Family Services of

NWMI, among others.

“It’s exciting to see our YAC students use their time and talents to

ensure grant dollars are invested in programs and services that really

make a difference in the lives of youth in our region,” said Thornbury.

Actively Giving for Local Benefit

Bob and Pauline Young have been active throughout their adult lives in giving back with annual

donations to dozens of nonprofits locally and beyond.

As the Youngs neared retirement, they wanted to re-envision their giving and focus primarily on local

organizations working in this region, which they’ve called home since 1970. To do so, the Youngs turned

to the Community Foundation, establishing the Robert and Pauline Young Family Endowment, a donor

advised fund, in 2006.

Since its founding, the Young Family Endowment has given over $1 million in grants to local

organizations focused on health and human services, the environment, and more. The Youngs also

prioritize giving to our Focus Fund Endowment, which impacts broad community needs across our five-

county region.

“We understand that we may not always know all the needs in the community and that the Foundation

is better able to identify needs than we are as individuals,” said Bob. He added that they value the

flexibility of their donor advised fund to help them accomplish their philanthropic goals.

“By working through the Community Foundation, we can both support our favorite charities and give

to the Focus Fund Endowment, which supports the Community Foundation’s role in identifying and

meeting local needs.”

“We understand that we may not always know all the needs in the community and that the Foundation is better able to identify needs than we are as individuals.”

Creating a Giving Plan for Lasting Impact

Dick and Clarine Olson’s philanthropy story is one of community involvement and service. Both served

on our Board of Directors and as volunteers with many organizations in our region.

Last year, we received the benefit of a gift through Dick and Clarine Olson’s charitable remainder trust,

which Dick established in 1995. After Dick’s passing in 2000, we partnered with Clarine (who recently

passed in 2020) to design a giving plan that would have a meaningful impact today, and for the future.

The Olsons’ generosity supported immediate grants to several local organizations while also creating

several designated endowments at the Community Foundation, generating long-lasting benefits for

organizations they cared about most. Their gift also included support for our Focus Fund Endowment,

contributing to a valuable community asset that is flexible to meet changing needs and opportunities.

Through their thoughtful giving, Dick and Clarine have left a meaningful impression, showing how a

single gift can have far-reaching and lasting impacts on our region today and for generations to come.

“I like the assurance that my gift makes a local community impact with the causes I believe in. Also, that no matter how large or small, the donation will continue to help those in need not only now but in the future. That is the value and beauty of the GTRCF.”
