September 17th is our All Species Tournament, so start getting ready for this annual club event! Get your boats ready and your crew or buddies lined up for a fun day on the water. There will be a sign up sheet again at the September meeting. The rules and regulations for this event will be an-nounced again at the monthly meeting. Re-member all club dues must be paid up to win any in house club tourna-ment awards. Unless someone makes a sug-gestion the rules and fish categories will stay the same as last year. Business of the Month: Lakewood Campground is the place to be now that all the tourists have gone! If you’d
like that stay-cation without the hassle, this is the location!
Consistently voted one of the most family friendly
camping resorts, Lakewood is also a club and Flounder
Tournament Sponsor, as well as a sponsor for the
SALTT league.
Check out all that Lakewood has to offer!
waters are low and floun-der are in the breakers so if you could get to a pier and fish straight down, it is on like Donkey Kong. Pier 14, 2nd Avenue Pier, Springmaid, Surfside and Garden City have been pretty hot………. Best time is around the tide but still good most of the day to be honest Best bait choices are live mud minnows, but live or dead mullet is better. The summer action around here can be summed up in two words “mixed bag”! This is an excellent time go fishing because we have so many options. On the inlet and inshore waters we will be targeting Red-fish, Flounder, Trout and small sharks using a combination of lures and live bait tactics. Given the right condi-tions you can get up on the shallow short grass
flats in search of tailing redfish…if you like to “hunt for fish” this is the ultimate experience! On top of that there is some great action off of the beach and on the near shore wrecks and arti-ficial reefs created by our club and others for species such as Cobia, Spanish Mackerel, King Mackerel, Red Snapper and Sea Bass. What more can be said, late summer and fall fishing has something for every-one!

Report taken from local
guides, Sun News, fint-
alk.com and word of mouth
Estuary Look for: Red drum, flounder, spotted seatrout, black drum, sheepshead, blue-fish, tautog
Capt. Mike McDonald of Gul-R-Boy Guide Service and Capt. Lin Fore of Low Country Expeditions
headed to North Inlet Tuesday and caught 15 trout on plastic grubs, live shrimp and cut shrimp. A
few sharks, including an aggressive blacktip, picked off a few trout while they were reeled in.
McDonald noted a water temperature drop to 81 degrees on Tuesday, down from the mid-80s. Capt.
Patrick Kelly of Captain Smiley Fishing Charters in Little River enjoyed a very good flounder and
trout bite earlier in the week, but catches slowed a bit on Thursday. Kelly caught trout on live shrimp
or DOAs on a popping cork and flounder and red drum on live finger mullet. “There are finger mul-
let everywhere,” said Kelly.
“If you put anything shrimpy out there, it’s going to get bit.” Capt. Jeff Maples of Reel Salty Char-
ters stayed in Murrells Inlet to catch black drum, flounder, red drum and croaker on Thursday.
Maples’ crew caught four keeper flounder and a 16-inch red. Jessica Perry of Perry’s Bait and Tackle
reports reds are showing up at the Murrells Inlet jetties, with flounder and black drum the best bet
inside the creeks.
Inshore Look For: Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, whiting, weakfish, flounder, blue-fish, pompano, red drum, black drum, spadefish, sheepshead, black sea bass
It’s been another flounder jubilee on the piers and from the surf on the south end of the Grand
Strand over the last week to 10 days. Low levels of dissolved oxygen and an algal bloom have oc-
curred in the water within at least a few hundred yards of the beach and flounder have congregated in
the surf zone, searching for oxygen. The phenomenon has occurred and flounder have been caught
on piers from 14th Ave. Pier and south, but dissolved oxygen levels are returned closer to normal
and catches have curtailed as of Thursday.
The most flounder were caught on the Pier at Garden City, Surfside Pier and Springmaid Pier. The
phenomenon has occurred three times in the last 12 years along the Grand Strand. When the flounder
slowed down, the Spanish mackerel picked up, as jiggers have used straw rigs to catch Spanish in
decent numbers this week, although in most instances the Spanish have been right around the 12-inch
minimum size limit. Also look for whiting, croaker, bluefish, weakfish and pompano off the piers.
Capt. Jeff Maples of Reel Salty Charters was live-chumming finger mullet on Tuesday at Paradise
Reef, in preparation for Saturday’s Spanish Mackerel Derby out of the Mullet Hut in Murrells Inlet.
Maples was surprised when a couple of skinny king mackerel, weighing 19 and 18 pounds, respec-
tively, took the mullet. Jessica Perry of Perry’s Bait and Tackle reports a peanut dolphin was caught
11 miles offshore. The ocean water temperature was 84.9 degrees Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Spring-
maid Pier.
Offshore Look For: Wahoo, blackfin tuna, dolphin, grouper, vermilion snapper, black sea bass, amberjack, vermilion snapper, triggerfish, porgy.
Trolling action has been good for wahoo, as is typically the case in August. The number of blue mar-
lin encounters has been surprisingly high, plus sailfish are around as usual in late summer.
Trolling can also produce king mackerel, blackfin tuna, dolphin, barracuda and bonito. Bottom fish-
ing is very good for grouper, especially scamp, amberjack, vermilion snapper, black sea bass, porgy
and triggerfish.
Red snapper are off-limits in the South Atlantic region and must be released.

While I definitely already miss summer, there are such great things to look forward to in the fall that I really can’t be that upset. First– the fishing really gets good. I love being out on the water while it’s still warm, but with less traffic and better bites. Second– its hunting season too! Woohoo! Third– so many super fun club events happen in the fall! We have a lot lined up so make sure to check the calendar and pencil GSSAA time in! We have our annual outing on the New Inlet Princess coming up on Sunday October 9– register today and make sure you get a spot! Sun-day tours are less crowded as they max out seats at 40, so I would get on this post haste! We also have our club picnic coming up in October, can I get an amen for some Dickey’s BBQ again this year? Oh brisket I like thee al-most as much as I like thine fresh caught fish… I digress. As long as I’m on

The topic of foooooood, let’s not for-get this month’s Club sponsored LOWCOUNTRY BOIL NIGHT!!! Shrimp, sausage, corn, taters to your hearts content, plus some special guest stars from the dessert home-front! Definitely a meeting not to miss! This month we also have our All Species Tourney, which I highly suggest everyone participate in as it is a great time usually filled with some pretty good fish. Continue to keep our club members that are struggling with various health issues in your prayers and thoughts. I look forward to seeing you all Thursday!
