Retail
So much news, it is hard to know where to begin so I will just give you afew of the highlights and you will have to stay tuned for continuingupdates. The LIVING ROOM is BACK! It's been a long time since we've had an actualsitting area at Rittenhouse Needlepoint though it was hugely popular featureduring our early years. We simply didn't have room in the old space but now -- now that we have space galore, we can devote some of it to sitting andstitching again! Of course, the various areas will also be suitable for boredspouses, friends and children. So plan on coming to stitch but first stop atPanera’s or the Reading Terminal Market to get a little snack and then come onin prepared to make it an morning or afternoon of shopping, chatting andstitching (sounds good to me!).
Another first for us -- a SECOND CASH REGISTER. So no more waiting tocheck out! (Remember the ANG?) Also, ask to see the fancy new tape machine
we bought. I am telling you this puppy gets that tape on the canvas so well Idefy you to take it off!

TRUNK SHOWS -- for our GRAND OPENING we've booked TWO trunkshows. The first is SHOREBIRD STUDIOS. These are excellent designs fromthe late artist Kathryn Molineaux. Kathy was a brilliant colorist and she had areal flair for painting needlepoint canvases. Its rare for so many of her canvasesto be available in one place so be sure to take advantage of our 20%DISCOUNT during the FLOWER SHOW (that's for in-stock items and in storepurchases only). Our second trunk show is from HUG ME BAGS. The bags areabsolutely stunning and the "must have" accessory for smart stitchers. Thesebags are so lovely and so functional I am thinking you may not be able to buyjust one. [PSSST -- I'll let you in on a secret -- zipper fobs (how cool is that?)are available for these bags. These hand-made pieces were created tocoordinate with the fabrics (just ask to see some of the gorgeous examples wehave and we would be happy to show them to you)].

Oh and did I mention -- NO DOORBELL! Probably should have led with thisbecause for the last nine years the blasted doorbell system at our old locationhas been the first and most annoying hurdle to getting to our store. In our newlocation, we are still on the second floor but our new building has a securityguard in the lobby and therefore the doors are kept unlocked. Just open thedoor, find one of the two elevators and come on up to the second floor. Easypeasy.

Hayley and the gang are also working on re-doing heaps of finishing that wasacquired from purchasing Barbara Russell Designs. Much of it was in need of abit of a re-do and this gives our crack-pot team a chance to stretch theircreative wings. So that's been fun for them.
In the new space we also have tons of shelf space to display finishedneedlepoint and so Russell has brought a whole lot of finishing from Delware tothe new store. So be sure to check those items out as well.

Education
Lots happening in our Education division as we, at long last, have adedicated classroom space that can accomodate up to 10 (or even 12)students. The advantages of having a DEDICATED CLASSROOMSPACE are many but first among them is the fact that our students will nolonger have the sort of constant interuptions that were common at the oldstore (such as shoppers trying to access nearby threads or the phoneringing, etc.)

Customers are welcome to take any of these books thatinterest them (the books on the shelves however are to remain in theroom).

In news from our Wholesale division, the TNNA WINTER SHOW in LasVegas was more successful than we had anticipated. Changing WomanDesigns was the big seller and Corey Schumann also had some successwith his own designs. Now, the focus shifts to Destination Dallas inSeptember which has become the premier needlepoint wholesale event.Even though the show is in September it's certainly not too early to bedeveloping designs for the show. If you have any thoughts about what youwould like to see in needlepoint, we would LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU.Just shoot Marisha an email at: [email protected]
These map cases store hundreds of canvases from Barbara Russell Designs,Changing Woman Designs and Rittenhouse Needlepoint. All safe and sound at
their new home.
Charity
Despite our peripatic state, DONATIONS to the Charity division HAVECONTINUED apace. A big "THANK YOU" to all our donors whose generosity
continues to surprise and inspire us.

We are still currently LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS interested in working withthe Charity Needlepoint Program. We need individuals to "kit" projects as well
as a Program Coordinator who can move mountains. We've got the stuff, we'vegot the space, now all we need are the people to make some good
stuff happen.
On a related note, are you interested in needlepoint but not currently in afinancial position to be able to pursue your interest? Please contact us. Thanksto the generosity of our patrons (and others) we may be able to help. Contact
Stephen. Totally confidential -- no worries.
Lots of new panels and all the small canvases have been removed frombaskets and cubes and incorporated onto the panels.
Stephen's Notes on Needlepoint
I've been busy stitching 3D flowers recently. First it was a poppy and now I amworking on a Sunflower. The Poppy went well I felt. The petals were easily
seperated into stitchable areas and the stitches that I selected worked

reasonably well. On the backside it was difficult to know which petals to use thedarker thread on because I was assuming that the darker petals would naturallybe the ones that are further away but then again would they be? I mean this isthe underside of a flower so wouldn't the whole thing be darker? And if I was to
color the petals furthest away from the viewer with the darker red on thebackside then that would mean logically that the frontside of those petals would
be the petals closest to the viewer on the front side and so they should be inthe light red on the front side. But if I was to stitch the front side in light red and
the back side in dark red wouldn't that look strange? You can see that I wasclearly overthinking this whole thing so in the end I just decided to do each side
in a combination of light and dark and to put the light and the dark whereverthey seemed to "want" to go.

As for the sunflower that has proven to be more of a challange than the poppy.
The face of the sunflower screams out for ribbon work but I wanted to avoidthat because I felt that it would be too obvious. That's just the kind of person Iam. Anyhow, I did the border in a skip tent stitch using a Threadworx overdyeand it looked good but then I decided I wanted to add a little zing to it and so I
changed the stitch to Alternating Continental and used some ThreadworxOverdyed Kreinik Metallic Braid. I was a little disappointed with the result andfelt that it might have looked better as Skip Tent but whatever. Next I did this
funky stitch for the petals using a light colored Threadworx overdyed (myoriginal plan was to do the whole flower in Threadworx Overdyed but then I leftthe thread somewhere). It seemed to me that the color was too washed-out andnot really sunflower-y enough plus I wanted to incorporate the darker gold bitsinto the light yellow area so I thought I would do a bit of beading. At first I was
thinking I would bead every main hole but it was too difficult to determine whichwas a main hole and which were minor holes so I just went random. The result?Underwhelming. Russell says he likes it but I am not a huge fan. Should have
choosen a different colored thread to do the stitch with in the first place.

I am having a bit more success with the reverse side of the sunflower. I havereplicated the same stitch on the gold areas around the edge (alternating
continental with half matte and half shiny thread). Then, I chose a knit stitch forthe stem and a linen thread that I received as a sample from Gentle Arts. Its avery nice thread. Nicest linen thread I've ever stitched with in fact. Linen threadI have found has a tendency toward self-destruction when used for stitching on
canvas. This thread holds together rather well.

I chose for the green area the Byzantine stitch and its turned out rather well if Ido say so myself. It was a hard area for which to choose a stitch because
whatever stitch I did it needed to radiate outwards in a circular manner. Thisstitch seems somehow to do that. Still have the backsides of the petals to do.Will not be doing a repeat of what I did on the front side. Am still not sure what
to try -- any suggestions?
