States COMPLETE -

HAIL TO THE CHAMPION! I kid you not, Grand Ledge Wrestling Club REALLY

made some true history this year not only for our coveted Folkstyle season, like through MYWA (MI. Youth Wrestling Association), but also now through the rest of Freestyle and Greco. through MUSAW (MI. Wrestling Federation) this past weekend at Howell H.S. Where to BEGIN, right? Season completes for Folkstyle and numbers drop, almost all except our true “die hards” that probably know the reality that WRESTLING IS WRESTLING, doesn’t matter what style it is, the more you do, the BETTER YOU GET. We have a GREAT end of season banquet, get a chance once more to see everyone and practice resumes the last few weeks of season. Tournaments are slow and sloppy, which is totally discouraging for EVERYONE, no WONDER why many didn’t want to consider sticking with our token Freestyle and Greco-Roman season of training this year. We continue anyway as keeping our EYE ON THE PRIZE for season end for the all allusive STATE CHAMPIONSHIP for those styles now. Get into the last week and we have one BIG practice with everyone that still remains in training, and then NO ONE except Jack and Cole for the final day, Cole unable to really train too much on that day with his recent injury. We have a good time but don’t really finish off then on a SUPER huge or good note except for Tuesday’s practice then.

Enter Howell High School, day 1 for Friday and GRECO-ROMAN. We don’t tell Logan Sandell such, because we realize that he sometimes gets a case of the “nerves” for either big tournaments, or just the first round for usually other ones. We keep such to ourselves and see exactly WHO ENDS UP showing up for weigh in’s and competition START.

WAIT! Is that the same kid that beat Logan 1st round of this year’s Folkstyle Regional Championship for MYWA Central Region out at Mason? PAYBACK IS A MOTHER!

Logan shows up, weigh’s in, and immediately takes the mat for this Friday nigh competition for Greco-Roman, only one boy stands in his way for the title, but it IS THIS SAME BOY he previously lost to – NOT GOOD FOR HIM though now, as LOGAN IS READY. Logan finishes off first round headlocking his opponent across the mat and back again till the boy is screaming, yelling, and crying. Logan’s obviously has a debt to be repaid I start to think in my mind, and amidst all my own shouting to STOP HEADLOCKING every second, he, Logan, does his own thing. He is in his OWN WORLD for this rematch.

We just finish off Logan’s match and the unforeseen happens: LOGAN IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE ALLUSIVE TRIPLE CROWN BELT! Can’t believe it, now things are getting crazy AND interesting all at the same time!

Logan gets submitted in – in time, and we are going for the ALL STATE belt for those that have already won a state championship in Folkstyle, that now wish to put it all on the line to see if they can do such in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman styles also, the true TRIPLE CROWN state championship – all around award, the coveted TRIPLE CROWN BELT! And no, we make NO mention to Logan what is going on at all. Everything is hush hush between everyone as not only Logan takes the mat again to get his second win versus his opponent (best two out of three wins if only having one opponent then – round robyn), and our other kids start to take the mat now TOO, or sit alongside to route us on. Still day one or NIGHT ONE then of GRECO, and we do get one other fearless to try it –

JACK SNAUKO, as we all get together between it and weigh in’s, what have you, to route him and Logan on.

Jack captures his first win, familiar guy, and the stakes start to MOUNT.

before on Hawaii trained athlete this week in Greco, as securing this time a QUICK FALL on the worthy opponent in just the first period for his own grudge match, Jack’s!

Logan literally beats up his opponent so bad the second time, again – best two out of three matches, that he secures a quick championship title and new honor of now STATE CHAMPION IN GRECO-ROMAN style TOO! Coach can’t even believe it, 1st yr

wrestler! Logan gets a break till tomorrow, and we ensure that he is looked in for the ultimate battle the following day to hope and solidify a three part championship with that TRIPLE CROWN BELT. Snauko is now ALONE though, last competitor to continue on with a packed chart of nothing but ALL STATE guys now; 3rd round BEGINS as Jack takes the mat.

Jack draws the Dewitt kid – Chandler Reed I believe his name is, same kid that beat up on us out at the last Greco Jack did out at Howell. I am FURIOUS and no one knows, as I know Jack can beat Chandler. The kid will NEVER know as much as we do in Greco, even if he TRIED. Jack does though, and is READY, as is COACH – THIS TIME. Jack STICKS this kid to his back in a headlock that not only captures the period, take the lead, but almost ends the entire match. I can’t stop SCREAMING NOW – MY HERO is out there on the mat doing what we DO – in GRECO! Flustered and upset, the boy rebounds as we continue on till being just barely ousted at match end – SHUTE!!!!!! Definitely in running for MATCH OF THE DAY, the reality sets in after such: WE AREN’T THROUGH WITH YOU ….yet, Chandler. Tomorrow is another day.

Jack drops the next match I believe, as I literally about BLACK OUT after Chandler’s match! I know that seems funny to hear, but that last match versus that boy took so much out of me that all I can remember is how well Jack did that last match, nothing else. So, Jack ends up dropping his final, but think he still took “4th” if the memory serves me correctly. Either way, the Snauko’s and I inquire about medals and then find out that the bracket is just entering the “round robyn”, yet already almost 11pm. With a long drive home and then right back early in the morning for Freestyle, we cut our losses to prepare for the rematch, drop ship, and leave once complete so as to pick back up the medal the next day.

A “return to normalcy” of sorts the next day? NO, far from such as we now have some much fuller brackets of even TOUGHER kids the next day back at Howell for the Freestyle State Championships, and the rest of our team now in tow WITH US too, WOPA!

Logan Sandell (45lbs/Freestyle) leads us back out on this now – day 2 by ousting and pinning the first kid, and then drawing the other Folkstyle State Finalist the weight BELOW him for MYWA.

BIG MISTAKE jumping up the weight as Logan about MAULS this little guy/opponent with a slue of underhooks, headlocks, and half nelsons to win the first 2 rounds, and not even needing to go on till the 3rd (SCARED OF YOU ….LOGAN SANDELL!).

Logan sticks the next two more opponents even after, and heads into the finals, WOPA!

Legal takes the mat next, as Cole Janes doesn’t get anyone to enter the tourney at his weight, which seemed really weird and totally depressing. Luckily, Cole proves his team allegiance by waiting around all stay and REMAINING WITH HIS TEAM, to route them on, help record their video, and be in the corner with coach – throughout still.

Legal drops his first two & is out; coach is totally let down because he KNOWS Legal is trying to literally live by ONLY true Freestyle now, no more headlocks every second, stupid shots, etc. - only roll and throw. Unfortunately, we can’t seem to get such to fully work yet w/Ryan; 2 losses later, Ryan is not just done for the day, but for the season. Tommy Lear (60lbs/Freestyle) open next, he DROPS his first match to another stud, as between Jack Snauko’s weight class, Tommy really has one of the toughest brackets in the STATE to contend with. Next match is a grudge match versus Eaton Rapids again, the showdown from early season on at E. Lansing (loss), and Central Regionals (MYWA).

Tommy takes all advantages with nothing BUT basics to win the second round and move

on. The boy he again ousts from Eaton Rapids, pulls off the upset of the weekend by beating one of the all state kids the night BEFORE in Greco, and is still in contention for a Freestyle placing if he can equally rebound. Clock is ticking, next round set to BEGIN. This picture may not go into a record book – BUT IT SHOULD, as Snauko steps his first round (or next round) for Freestyle versus the ALL STATE youth from Gaylord, same boy that Cole Janes had to always face, that was literally CRUSHING everyone at that weight group most of the year in MYWA from what coach observed – TALL KID.

TIME STOPS, everything slowwwwwwwwws downnnnn, as Snauko literally takes CONTROL of this match versus the Gaylor MONSTER, and puts together a war plan that would make even the fearless at heart Freestyler CRINGE in empathy.

Roll to throw, roll to throw and REPEAT, not all do or do SCORE, but coach is on his TOES in excitement, can’t even sit DOWN now as the match is so close that Jack LITERALLY has a chance to oust this kid and wedge himself into an all state honor at PLACING again this weekend at the State Championships for MUSAW, this time in Freestyle! WAIT, what just HAPPENED. Jack catches the wrestler trying to cut the corner and catches the boy in a chin whip – do or die, boy either follows through to finish his takedown, or we finish our whip to collect the points along the way. The picture may allude to the unforeseen here below as Jack not only collects the score, but a shocking PINFALL!

OK, TIME TO PANIC! Jack just beat the ALL STATE guy, almost did the same to the other from Dewitt last night, and now draws that SAME KID NEXT for another GRUDGE MATCH with CHANDLER REED once more! Up next before that is our double state champion – Logan Sandell once again though.

Logan makes QUICK work and another pinfall on to his record with this little guy in the red, and we are NOW in the finals once again for now the Freestyle State Championship, and possible TRIPLE CROWN as we thought Logan was already DONE! HE WAS NOT, has to face the same kid that he just TROUNCED last night once again from GRECO!

Cole not wrestling, Brayden NOT EITHER, Legal out now too, all that remains is Tommy before we get to Logan’s final match, and Snauko’s next one. Tommy draws another all state kid from Gaylord that we have lost to before, and I am

again nervous. This same kid was TROUNCED the night before in Greco, although Tommy has been mostly gone to FLORIDA the last few weeks and I can’t assure myself ENOUGH that he, Tommy, is truly READY for this grudgematch.

Tommy loses the match and I almost come UNGLUED as the table for the 2nd time can’t

seem to keep up with proper scoring – signaled by the referee, or head referee that stands near by. Referee takes the time to ask me what is going on, or what my argument is about, and when I let him know what the deal is, he lets down his card basically saying that “if we screwed Cael Sanderson’s last score, we can do the same to yours”. I am laughing now amongst my discontent, because I know we are right on our call questioned, and did it the proper way. I have so much respect for this head referee though, that I let it go quickly, trust that guy anyway, as he had enough humuility and professionalism to admit that they had screwed our match. Tommy loses and is out though. SHUTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

And now here is our LARGEST GRUDGEMATCH OF THE WEEKEND back with Chandler Reed, back against our own Jack Snauko in this time – Freestyle, lucky mat 3!

Snauko keeps the match CLOSE, all part of the game plan in this coveted rematch.

Back and forth and back AGAIN Snauko is not only IN THIS MATCH, but I think I almost wet my pants at matside as it comes RIGHT DOWN to the last few seconds of this kid winning by only 2, as now we have a lock and about to ROLL! GO NOW I SCREAM, GO ….NOW! JACK DOES, does a short tilt Guttwrench, and my eyes bug OUT OF MY HEAD, just awaiting Jeff, the referee above to score and or signal such, I am vocalizing it OUT LOUD!

Match is DONE, and we didn’t get our points; I am beside myself. We truly EARN now the win, not just MATCH OF THE DAY from yesterday versus this kid, GOOD KID, at that, but now when we do outscore him, we don’t get the call. I quickly ask Jeff our referee what is going on, and he immediately approaches the table to see what they saw.

As Jeff brings them back to center, I see our fate: the corner couldn’t affirm the angle of the tilt EITHER, because only WE were in perfect position to make the call, or now REVERSE said call. I am almost in tears that we lost, but because Jack had EARNED his points doing it the RIGHT way. We complains not a word though; I – time to suck it up. JACK SNAUKO, round 3 (give or take), winner, MATCH OF THE DAY, Freestyle, versus Chandler Reed, both SATURDAY for this, and Friday night for Greco – Roman, WOPA! Logan Sandell is about to take the mat now for his next and FINAL match of the weekend. What will lie underneath a win will be the only thing that Logan has NOT won this year – the TRIPLE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, all three styles then – all around, for the MUSAW TRIPLE CROWN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BELT.

Logan gives us some SCARES, same kid lost to at the Central Regionals, already beat the heck out of him in Greco, now is a chance for Logan to make HISTORY, only kid to possibly win the TRIPLE CROWN FOR US, one match AWAY from such!

Match is close, but Logan won’t be undone; he takes his coveted headlock out and puts it back on this kid to do the UNTHINKABLE for a first year wrestler – MAKE HISTORY

Logan Sandell, our first TRIPLE CROWN WINNER for the new GLWC for 2011, and maybe one of the first in YEARS for us too, possibly; again, Sandell is a first year wrestler to note!

Snauko’s last match, win or lose now will reveal certainty: will Jack have ENOUGH points to place now at Freestyle after his two HUGE matches to warrant placing and becoming ALL STATE in 2011 for MUSAW!

SURE ENOUGH, keeping it all close, getting his necessary pinfalls when possible, Jack has captured 4th place for Freestyle at this year’s 2011 MUSAW State Championship, and

between his medal won equally the same place for Freestyle, he takes home BOTH awards this weekend for MOST IMPROVED AND MATCH OF THE DAY! CONGRATS! Snauko did drop his last match of the day to the champion by the way, but that champion went on to win the TRIPLE CROWN ALSO, along with Grand Ledge’s most RECENT transfer of Mr. Kamali, middle of THREE brother transfers expected into GL in FALL!

What a great year everyone, good work, hope to see you all at our GLWC fundraiser next month, any summer camps and clinics that I have planned, or just next season – ready to start RIGHT back up this year in November once more, WOPA! BE READY! KEEP TRAINING!
