Schools are back in session, off-peak season is beginning at many vacation spots and we slide back into our old rhythm from way back in June. Please remember our Labor Day Mass and barbecue. Labor Day is September 2. Elsewhere in this edition of Knight Life you can read of the other activities on campus this month. Immediate PGK Thom Galvin represented us at the recent Supreme Convention held in San Antonio. Thom told me that Supreme’s membership directive for this year remains the same as last. It is summed up as “The Power of One”, which is one new member per council per month. Thom told me that Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said that every Catholic man should be extended an invitation to join the Knights if he is not already a member. Thanks, Thom for attending the convention and repre- senting us in San Antonio. Pope Francis has the plight of persecuted Christians as his prayer intention for the month. I tend to think of such persecutions as being relegated to the history books, going back to the Christians and the lions. However it is still a sad state that some of our brothers and sisters in our Catholic faith still face such persecutions. Today we can read about Christians being attacked for their faith in places such as Nigeria and Egypt. Religious liberty is under attack in our country but our churches are not. Let us join Pope Francis in prayer for our persecuted Christian brothers and sisters. PGK Kenny Goss leads us in the rosary each Sunday at 12:30. We meet in the council home. We pray for all EDW members and their families. Please send along any other intentions you have. God Bless each of you and your families. Vivat Jesus! Pray the Rosary! Stephen J. … OF NOTE NATIONALS DAY RECAP

The 7th Annual EDW Nationals Day was held on Saturday afternoon, July 27. It was organized by EDW’s Special Activities Chair Norm Marcocci. Once again, it was another sold out successful event and a good time was had by all. Everyone enjoyed watching the Nats take down the New York Mets 4-1. Upon returning to EDW, everyone enjoyed a drink at the Council Home. The biggest winner was KOVAR. More than $500 was raised from the sales of door prize and 50/50 raffles. Norm would like to thank Grand Knight Steve McTeague, Deputy Grand Knight John White, and Financial Secretary Jerry Garren for allowing him to organize Nationals Day; PGK Mike Bauer and Columbus Club President Owen Bierne, Jr. for handling the ticket sales and bus transportation arrangements; and Council Home Bar Manager John O’Neill, Jr. and the rest of the Council Home Bar staff would constantly providing the food and beverages for all the hungry and thirsty fans at the tailgate party. This event will be held again next year. You can find out more and other events organized by Norm by visiting Facebook at: K of C EDW #2473 Special Activities. GO NATS!

MANAGER’S CORNER PETER SILANO

We have successfully completed another summer season at the Columbus Club. The Camp and Away Camp operated without a hitch this year thanks to the efforts of our Camp Director, Chandler Hill-Sampson, Assistant Camp Director, Jennifer Spollen and Camp Manager, Mary Dannemiller and of course the numerous counselors who manage to keep one hundred and fifty children happy, healthy, sun screened and occupied with various classes and adventures. Remember to keep an eye out for camp registration February 2014.

The Pool which is now operated under the supervision of American Pools for the first time this year went swimmingly. Thank you to our Pool Manager, Erik Gore, Assistant Manager, Nora O’Neil, Head Lifeguard, Tyler Cook, Senior Guard, Chris-tian Kerrigan and the many lifeguards and pool desk staff. We have also implemented a new online Pool registration system which has reduced endless man hours of manual entries. Reg-istration opens in February 2014.

The Deep End which has again exceeded our expectations this year, Thanks to our Manager, Thom Galvin and his staff, Kevin McKeon, “Snack Bar Joe” Krzywicki, Randee Miller, James Spollen, Lilly Nelson, Deep End mascot Mary Jo Galvin and numerous others to many to list who battled the intense heat and did a great job throughout this very busy season.

As we enter the busy fall season we look forward to seeing our members and neighbors at our Labor Day Mass & Picnic, End of year Pool Party, Family Breakfast now chaired by the infamous Kenny Goss and his band of volunteers. The Supper Club and don’t forget our Crab Fest in October, menus dates and times listed throughout this issue.

In closing, I recently came across this passage which re-minded me of what our club is all about and thought it fitting to pass along. The Only Way Up, by Daniel M. Brindle, Does a brother leave us down When we are in despair, Or does he lift us out Through the kindness of his care? And are we not all brothers, Meant to lend a hand, Helping one another to find the promised Land? For we are all the keepers To the keys of love and hate, And in opening these doors, We choose our final fate. So yes I am your Brother And you are also mine, And if we help each other, We’ll scale to life Devine.

WHO WANTS TO MEET REAL LIVE HEROES OF WWII?

They are coming from Florida, and Texas to visit the memo-rials in DC and EDW will be one of their hosts

• Saturday Sept. 7th in the Main Hall at Noon from Florida!

• Friday night October 11, 2013, 5:00pm, 60 WWII Vets from the Dallas Texas area for dinner!

• Saturday October 19, 2013, noon, 250 WWII Vets from the West Florida Coast

As part of Honor Flight we are welcoming the WWII Vets to our home.

MISSION STATEMENT: Transport America’s veterans to Wash-ington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices.

GOAL: Helping every single veteran in America, willing and able to board a plane or a bus, to visit THEIR memorial.

PRIORITY: Top priority is given to America’s most senior heroes — World War II era veterans and any veteran with a terminal illness who wishes to visit THEIR memorial. The program will naturally transition to Korean War, Vietnam War and all other veterans who served, on a chronological basis.

ELIGIBILITY: All men and women serving stateside or overseas.

PHILOSOPHY: Since America felt it was important to build a memorial to the service and the ultimate sacrifice of her veterans, the Honor Flight Network believes it’s equally important that they actually get to visit and experience THEIR memorial.

MOTTO: “We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.” – Will Rogers

We need the crowds, families, posters, and a lot of hand clapping and shaking as we welcome to our home. They will only be here for about 1 and ½ hour. We will a band, dueling buglers, and a lot more entertainment. If you can volunteer and help be a part of a very emotional event, please e-mail me [email protected]

KNIGHT OF THE MONTH For September I would like to recognize Norm Marcocci

as Knight of the Month. Norm is our Special Activities chairman. Norm helped organize another successful EDW day at Nationals Park to see the Nats play the Mets. From all accounts it was an enjoyable day and a great event.

Norm had a tougher time this year as he was recovering from surgery but with the able help of PGK Mike Bauer the event came off without a hitch.

Norm also has a King Cake party just before Lent each year. Norm also has a Facebook page for EDW Special events.

Thanks very much, Norm, for all you do. Please join me in congratulating Norm Marcocci, our Knight of the Month for September.

Special thanks to Nanette O’Neill for her hard work in organizing the Tea Party and to all of those that attended and donated gifts.

SAVE THE DATE!!!! The Tenth Annual Adults Only Halloween Party is almost here!!!! We are looking for-ward to another fun event. RETIREES I thought a thought. But the thought I thought wasn’t the thought I thought I thought. If the thought I thought I thought had been the thought I thought, I wouldn’t have thought so much.… Now I can’t even remember what I thought I was going to say– something about Retirees meeting every Wednesday at 11am or so for lunch and refreshments. September Birthdays: Adrian Lemmers, Franklin Michels, Bob Muschamp, Jim Walsh, Donna Casey, Sue Brown, and Aileen Onufrychuk. September Anniversaries: Mike and Donna Casey, Tom and Ann Murphy, Bob and Pat Muschamp, Dick and Erless Waldschmidt. Welcome to Dick Connally and his dad Bob Con-nally to the Retirees. We hope they continue to come. Please pray for all of our Brothers and their families, especially our sick retirees. Mike Casey

HELP WANTED/NEEDED; GREAT VOLUNTEER

OPPORTUNITYEDW “REDCOATS” (AKA WAITERS)To: New, and “not-so-new” members of EDW; also To: Recent Retirees (who want to stay active): Have you been thinking of getting more active with your Knights of Columbus Council? Becoming an EDW “Redcoat” is one way to do that. It’s also a great way to not only help the largest and most community-active KofC Council in Virginia, but is also an excellent way to meet and get to know a lot of your Brother Knights. The EDW Redcoats got their start 50 years ago. We continue the tradition of enabling EDW to host a wide range of events: small dinners; large fund-raisers for churches and schools; birthday, anniversary and wedding receptions, etc. We’ve six “teams” ranging in size from 20-40 members; including one “retiree” team. Several of our members have been Redcoats for 30-40+ years. Our ranks include young men in their 30’s, as well as some in their 70’s and 80’s! We’re proud of the half-dozen still active Redcoats who are also veterans of WWII. During 2012, 100 men joined EDW Council. Some did join one of the Redcoat teams. This is an open-invitation to ALL other new and older members of EDW to become a Redcoat. No previous waitering or bartending experience required. On-the-job training provided (at least 15-30 minutes). No updated Resume’ or references required! Simply contact one of our Redcoat team captains (you may know one of them): PGK Vince Long, 703-489-0035; Steve Hilla, 703-243-2417; Patrick Kerrigan, 703-538-5723; PGK Kenny Goss, 703-448-0332; Ray Fioramonti, 703-524-1804; or Bob Muschamp, 703-489-2856.
