St. Paul the Apostle Council 9652 March-April 2015

LENT A PERSONAL JOURNEY

Lent, a time of reflection and a time of risk. We hear the same message year after year, and yet, like going to

the confessional or attending Mass, we need a constant reminder of our failings. The challenge for each of us

is to accept God’s unconditional love, even with our faults. Accepting and receiving Jesus into our hearts, is

the healing we so need and yearn for.

This Lent I am proud to say that our Council is working hard to give us a forum to explore tools, allowing

each of us to move closer to walk with Jesus more freely.

The first event we will hold is a joint sponsorship with The Catholic Woman’s League. On March 5th a Re-

treat will take place at St. Paul the Apostle, beginning with a light meal at 6pm in the Hall. It is important to

note that this retreat is open to all parishioners.

The second event we will host is, the Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 27th, 7 pm in the Church

Our Parish is very much alive. Although we have our own sponsored events, other groups are holding their

own, as well. There are many opportunities such as Faith Development on Tuesday evenings, First Friday

Adoration, and Stations of the Cross each Friday, throughout Lent. These events and times of spiritual reflec-

tion are open to all parishioners. I encourage each of our members to look at the Church Bulletin for these

and other ways to explore your own personal Lenten journey. Take up the Cross and know you are loved and

not alone. .

Brother Knights, As we begin Lent we look to Easter 2015. From Ashes God will bring new life to our lives, parish, church and world at Easter 2015. Sunday Masses are the most important “anchors” of our prayer lives during Lent. St. Paul The Apostle also offers other opportunities to deepen our faith such as Faith Development Series, Stations of the Cross each Friday in Lent at 7:00 pm. Holy Week – Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday encompasses the most important week of the Christian Year. I encourage you to make these days special for partici-pation in the liturgies and life. Vivat Jesus!

In this season of Lent, we are reminded to forgive & be forgiven. Remember, “ to err is human; to for-give is divine”.“Keep Christ at the centre of your daily life”. The membership of Council 9652 at time of report is 156 members, with the addition of our “new member” at a 1st degree on Feb.22. Please welcome Mark Penate into our council, along with his wife Martha. We have 89 Associate, 65 Insurance, & 2 Inactive members. This includes 20 Honorary Life, 9 Honor-ary & 4 Disabled members. I encourage all members, aware of any men within our parish of St. Paul’s, who show an interest in be-coming a member of the Knights of Columbus, to

assist them in gaining info on who we are & what we do for our parish & community. I also encourage all members to keep me aware of any personal contact info that changes, to keep our records current. As you are all aware, the 2015 membership dues are now payable. The 2nd notice has been sent out & I am encouraging members who have not sent in their dues, to do so, and keep in “Good Standing” with your council. I thank those who have an-swered this request. Toronto Cardinal Collins: "Simply wrong" and indicates a society that "has lost its moral compass." Doc-

tors "are called to be servants of healing, not agents of death". Archbishop Durocher, president of CCCB: Helping someone commit suicide is "neither an act of justice or

mercy, nor is it part of palliative care". Michele Boulva, Catholic Org. for Life and Family: "the Supreme Court is giving us permission to kill. We

cannot overstate the gravity." Taylor Hyatt, Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, who has cerebral palsy: "extremely disappointed" "people

with disabilities who believe their conditions are non-terminal and insufferable could request assistance to end their life. That means me"

The Institute of Marriage and Family referred to studies that show safeguards are not always effective. It "sees no evidence that 'suicide creep' won't also happen in Canada"

Alex Schadenberg, director, Euthanasia Prevention Coalition: "The Supreme Court is naive to think that assisted suicide will not be abused, when abuse already occurs"

Insurance Check-up for 2015

Where did 2014 go? It seems like it was summer yesterday and Easter was last week.

I hope you and your family had a great finish to 2014. Now, the first quarter of 2015 is flying by.

Hopefully, you’ve established a few goals for this year. I’ve learned a great tip regarding resolu-tions. First, write them down. It’s not too late if you haven’t already done this. Commit your goals to paper and post it someplace you will see it often. Writing down a goal is the first step

towards achieving it. It may not make sense at first, but I’m sure you have heard stories of the success this sim-ple task can bring. Whether your goal is to exercise more, give more to charity, read more or watch less televi-sion, you’re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down.

Second, resolve to have an expert look at your finances. I recommend that you have a team of experts help you, and I would love to be the first you sit with. Let’s schedule some time to meet together, and I, your profession-al Knights of Columbus insurance agent, will provide an “insurance check-up” (at no cost!) that will evaluate any gaps in your family’s life insurance protection. Now might be the perfect time to fill those gaps, not later. Keep in mind that unlike many other products, you don’t just need money to obtain life insurance; you also need good health, and no one knows when your health could change.

Homographs and Ponderisms

Homographs are words of like spelling but with more than one meaning. A homograph that is also pro-

nounced differently is a heteronym. And you think that English is easy….?

Our Council’s best success in raising funds for Charity always de-

pends upon the work and participation of all the members. The lesson

taught in the First Degree was on the Virtue of Charity. The lesson empha-

sized Charity as one of the foundations of Knighthood. Year to date we

have 32 members who have taken tickets to sell on their own and 49 mem-

bers who have sold tickets in the mall. We have 153 members in our coun-

cil. Could it be that some of our members just aren’t aware of the council’s

need for help. If you can, please give us a helping hand.

An important part of Lent is alms giving. Why not exercise the Vir-

tue of Charity and give $50.00 to Knights of Columbus Charity Raffle and

buy a book. If this is too expensive for you, why not buddy up with a broth-

er Knight and share the cost of a book. To purchase a book of tickets call

like to sell tickets in the Cataraqui Mall please call Brother Howard Galli-

As of February 17 we have issued 69 books and have sold $850.00 worth of tickets. Our Cataraqui

mall sales for three events have realized $1372.20. Total for Individual and mall sales is $2,222.20. Brother

Dale and I would like to thank those members who have given of

their time to work on this event. Brother Dale, as he did last year,

is running a draw for participating members. Each member who

sells a book of tickets or completes a shift at the mall will have

his name entered into the Participation Draw.

With the council and district level finals complete in both Basketball Free Throw and the Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest, it's time to congratulate our winners and thank the Knights of Council 9652 who made this year's compe-titions a success.

Basketball Free Throw

A total of 309 children in four parish schools participated this year. This was our best participation ever, the result of St John XXIII CS joining Archbishop O'Sullivan CS, Mother Teresa CS and St Marguerite Bourgeois CS in the competi-tion. In addition, we once again assisted our Brothers in Council 7883 to conduct a competition at J.J. O'Neil CS in Napanee.

I have just noticed that the K of C has established a new poster contest - Keep Christ in Christmas. Entries to be submit-ted by the 15th December. I will pursue this before the end of the current school year and report back to Council.

Ladies Appreciation Night 2015

In Appreciation, Still and Again

The Knights of Columbus is sometimes described as a fraternity and in a way that’s accurate; membership is

limited to men. But it would be unfortunate to let that description define or limit who we really are and what

we really can be. As a “family” organization the participation of our spouses and children is and should be

integral. From the experience of our own council we have firsthand knowledge of the important role many of

our wives play in supporting our efforts, helping out with our projects and enabling our ability to make the

time to participate. It has been and continues to be an important priority to involve families in our activities.

And so, each year we make time to formally acknowledge and appreciate our wives’ support.

KNIGHT OF THE YEAR

RAY SMITH

Ray has been the Church Director for some years

and organized the Friday Adoration, The Memo-

rial Mass, the Council participation in the Sta-

tions of the Cross in Lent. This year, he took on

the role of Programme Director. He has been

active in all meetings and Council events.

Ray set up and administered the Council web site

for the past few years.

PARISH FAMILY OF THE YEAR

THE STAFFORD FAMILY

The Stafford family -- Joe, Theresa, Clare, Paul

and Anna has been active in parish and diocesan

activities for some years.

Joe is involved in Faith education, both as teacher

and participant. Theresa is a long-time member of

the CWL and very active in LifeTeen. Clare, Paul

and Anna are also involved in LifeTeen and Edge,

and in Diocesan youth activities.

Connie has been active in pastoral care and hospi-

tal visiting for several years. She helps husband

Tony with the Nativity Project Exhibition held in

BREAD OF LIFE

Jesus said in John 6:35 "I am the

bread of life". It is up to the believers

to take the Bread of Life (Jesus) out

of the Bakery (the church building),

to where the hungry people are. Af-

ter eating "Satan's Garbage", the

aroma of the Bread of Life will cer-

tainly smell good.

January and February saw the completion of the Basketball Free Throw in all four parish schools . The Alcolol and Drug Abuse Poster contest was also run during these months. Shaun Tymchuk’s report and related photos appear on Pgs. 7-9. The Annual Ladies Appreciation Night was held in February and was a very enjoyable event. Photos appear on Pgs. 12-15.

Finally, an event that our Council has supported - the St. John Fisher Dinner on the 18th March. Our parish recently had a Missionary from the CCO at Queen’s visit to raise funds, so some of you may al-ready know something about the CCO. It is a worthwhile cause to support. Again, our Council has booked a table to support this cause.

We have welcomed new members over the past few weeks. So, when they attend meetings do welcome them. I have met several parishioners who say they decided to attend St. Paul’s because of the wel-come they experienced when they first attended. Let this same spirit extend to our new members.
