The Spa was ormed thanks to postvolcanic

activities that resulted in the ormation o

numerous mineral water springs and natural

moettes highly appreciated or their therapeu-

Because o their unique composition, the

disorders o the digestive system while the gas

emissions o the moettes show great results in

treating cardiovascular diseases.

Blvnyos Fortress

This is one o the early medieval castles

in the area. It is estimated to have been

between the 10th and 11th century.

The ruins o Blvnyos ortress are at a walking distance rom Balvanyos Bath,

1029 m high hilltop.

There is a wonderul view rom its only sq

shaped tower to the resort.

It is an open gallery o a surace sulurous mine,

having the accumulated volcanic gases at the

bottom.

Birds fying below the level o the gas ell deadon the ground, that is where its name comes

rom.

The poisonous gas is mostly carbon dioxide but

also contains carbon-monoxide.

Blvnyos, Puturosu Mountain

Killer cave

The biggest and most dangerous cave on

the Pucioasa hill, because the level o the

killer gas is not indicated by yellow coloured

sulphur deposit.

Similar to the Stinking Cave, it once worked as

a sulphur mine.

Inside the cave the level o the killer carbon

dioxide gas is high because o the reuse that

has accumulated at the entrance.

The lake was ormed in the twin crater o the

Ciomatu massi. It is the only lake in Eastern

Europe with a volcanic origin.

The lake is not ed by any brook or stream, theonly water supply is the rain, thereore its water

is nearly as pure as distilled water.

The Saint Ana lake is surrounded by

legends, mysteries and miracles. Even the

shape o the lake is unusual; it looks like a large

tear-drop.

In the secondary crater o the Ciomatu

massi another lake was ormed but it got lled

up with decaying remains o old trees, dry

leaves and the area turned into a bushy, lightly

orested, boggy land, called the Mohos.

Only a ew smaller lakes remind us o the

existence o the ormer Mohos lake.

It is a forist reservation covered with pine and

various rare plants dating rom the ice era.

The mansion was built in the 17th century, and

in the 1820s it was enlarged in classicist style.

The mansion has three memorial stones with

Latin inscription, including the epitaph o AporPter. During its partial restoration ractions o

mural paintings were discovered.

Today the mansion is inhabited by its legitimate

heir, baron Apor Csaba and his son.

cast-iron stoves and due to the olk crat

workshop-camps.

Situated in the northern part o the Eastern

Carpathians, Varghis canyon is the most beauti-

ul and unique karst ormation in the region.

Since the last glacial period the Vrghi rivlethas ormed our levels o caves: 124 smaller

(5-10 m) and larger caves (10-1500 m) have

been explored , with a total length o approxi-

mately 7410 m. On the canyon there were ound

prehistoric objects and reminisces o people

rom the Neolithic Period.
