The Epiphany of the Lord The coming of the Magi, presented as the first fruits of the Gentiles, manifesting Jesus as the first fruits of all peoples. The Greek term Epiphany had the meaning of powerful entrance, by merit, in the fame of the people, and referred to the arrival of the king in a city. It also served to indicate the appearance of a divinity or a prodigious intervention of it. This feast was born in the churches of the East in the second half of the 4th century, at the same time as Christmas in the West, and had as its object to celebrate the birth and baptism of Christ. Later the two feasts were celebrated everywhere, and the Epiphany was in the East as a memory of Baptism while in the West they proposed to celebrate above all the coming of the Magi, presented as the first fruits of the Gentiles, manifesting Jesus as the first of all peo-ples . This reveals the mystery hidden in God: "That also the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body and participants in the Promise in Jesus Christ, for the Gospel." It is, then, a solemnity that goes beyond the specific theme of the Magi of the East, whose coming is remembered in the Gospel reading and whose meaning is prophe-

sied in the first reading and the responsorial psalm. The Epiphany of the Lord in the Roman liturgy has three moments: the adoration of the Magi, the Baptism in the Jor-dan and the Wedding of Cana (Catholic.net) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Catholic.net)
