    What is M-U-F ? M-U-F is a grammar teaching framework

    (teaching approach) where it stands for M-U-F(Meaning-Use-Form).

    This framework integrates grammar and itscontext.

    It was introduced by Janey Moon (2008) througha British Councils program concerning about thedevelopment of English teaching and learning inelementary school in Asia.

    English teaching and learning should follow thesequence of activities that help students to reach

    their optimum potentials. For this reason M-U-F framework can be used as

    a reference.

    The framework has five important elements to beapplied in developing lesson plans .

    The elements are Topic, Activities, LanguageFocus, Situation and Sequence . They are knownas TAFLSS. TAFLSS.

    MEANING

    For the first step, teachers introduce a newlanguage to children in MEANINGFULCONTEXT to help the children understand themeaning of the language that they arelearning.

    Meaning can be created through situationsthat are related to childrens life.

    WAYS TO CREATE MEANING

    Set situations or dialogues that are fun forchildren using dolls or other media. (puppetshow).

    Using stories. Playing dramas. Using Total Physical Response (TPR)

    Using pictures. Using childrens experiences as learning

    After children are exposed to English languagethrough the situations manipulated byteachers, they also need opportunities to useEnglish to communicate with others . Theymay use the language to play or to act inplays.

    Children are subconsciously notice form oflanguage (grammar) and tend to use languagenaturally in accordance with their need.

    Thus, teachers have the responsibility toattract childrens attention to language forms

    during English lesson, which means that theteachers are making the children aware ofaccurate language use both orally and written.

    Children need certain conditions to makethem understand meanings of Englishvocabularies and to use the language innatural context.

    This means that the teachers have tointroduce the language form with meaningfulcontext, which to make the children feelmotivated to use English as well.
