Gary Sinise & the Lt. Dan Band – Hollywood live

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany - Upon our arrival at Grafenwoehr Training Area, we can already hear the fantastic sound of the band’s sound check from far away. We are immediately excited and look forward to the concert that will follow later.

Relaxed and in a good mood – just like he was on stage with his guitar earlier – Gary Sinise arrives for the interview. He smiles at us in a friendly way and answers all our questions in detail.

Gary has been to Germany a few times before and like Grafenwoehr also vi-sited the U.S. military installations at Landstuhl and Ramstein. The night before, after his arrival at Grafenwoehr, he had dinner at the Kahrmühle res-taurant. Often, when he plays with his band, he does not have a lot of time to do things off post. That he is playing in Grafenwoehr today on July 4 is a coincidence. The concert organizer, the United Services Organization (USO), puts the schedule together.

When Gary began to support U.S. troops with his visits in 2002, the idea for the band came up immediately. He emphasizes many times that he only wants to entertain people with his music rather than just providing them with consoling words. Apart from the soldiers, who often need special care after deployments, he also wants to lift up the spirits of their family members and give something back to the people

for the often difficult missions they go on in support of their homeland.

Based upon his unforgotten movie cha-racter in “Forrest Gump,“ the band was soon named “Lt. Dan Band.“ His alter ego in the movie fights his way back into life after losing both his legs with the help of Forrest Gump. He could not have done it without his support. While Gary played a fighter in the movie, people now see him in the role of a supporter. Many soldiers, especially those who also have to live with a handicap after returning from a deployment, identify themselves with

Lt. Dan alias Gary Sinise and still to-day talk to him about his movie role.Gary took it a step further when he started a charity project for children after he had been in Iraq for the first time in 2003. There he saw that the kids had practically nothing and were lacking basic things such as toys and school supplies. That prompted him to start his charity project. The project which was originally called “operationi-raqichildren.org“ has since turned into an international charity project known as “operationinternationalchildren.org“ and does not only take care of needy children in Iraq but also in other war-

torn countries such as Afghanistan and Djibouti. For Gary, this is a way of showing honest American friendship. He does not want to tour with his band forever but is currently planning for an additional six years. To do that, he solely focuses on TV these days. With the exception of 11 weeks every year during which he is on tour with his band, all he does is play on the TV series “CSI New York.“

He has little time left for his family which is why he takes them on his annual tour. Although he personally prefers to listen to jazz music, his band with its many excellent singers plays a mix of rock, pop, country, soul and music from the 1940s which brought joy to a lot of people on July 4, 2010.

Experience culture and enjoy the city of Amberg

AMBERG, Germany - Amberg is always worth a trip! Especially in the summer month when the friendly shopping town awaits his guests with interesting attractions and offers. Water, in all its variations, plays an important role.

Not only the Vils river, the town‘s for-mer lifeline that meanders through the wide area of the State Garden Show of 1996, is an inherent part of Amberg’s townscape. And so are the two pools and the pirates‘ playground which is located on the popular sports and lei-sure time area behind the youth center. They provide refreshment on hot days and a lot of leisure time fun.

Young and old are equally excited about that. The “Hockermühlbad“ outdoor pool features large lawns with room for sun lovers and those who prefer the shade as well as a variety of pools. Kids feel at home in the boat-shaped toddler pool. Older kids enjoy the playing pool with its large rainbow water slide.

A 50 meter-long pool and a separate diving pool are available for swim-

mers. A playground with a mud pool, beach volleyball fields and basketball hoops as well as a kiosk that offers little snacks and the Italian restaurant “Zur Hockermühle“ for those who are more hungry complete the pool’s facilities. The “ Kurfürstenbad“ indoor pool is a pool for all generations. Located directly at Kurfürstenring, it features an aqua fit area with water fitness equip-ment, a counter current device, a pool for aqua jogging and water gymnastics classes, a warm water pool with mas-sage nozzles as well as hot whirlpools.

The leisure area features a swimming pool and a pool for non-swimmer, an aquarium, water grottos, swan-shaped sputterers, a Niagara water fall, a wild

water tube, an 82 meter-long super water slide, a toddler’s pool with a boat channel, a translucent foil roof for sun-tanning as well as tanning spas and a steam bath.

The latest feature at Kurfürstenbad is a sauna rondel which invites visitors to take a “short vacation for the soul.” Apart from a temperature of 85 de-grees Celsius, visitors may experience an event sauna with special fragrances, an infrared cabin, a water world with adventure showers, a diving pool with ice crusher, a brine and inhalation bath, an aroma bath, a tepidarium, a vitalisa-rium, a relaxation room and a juice bar.

Another favorite place to spend time in the summer is the pirates‘ playground which is located on the area of former State Garden Show. It features a pirate ship and rafts that may be rowed

across the small lake which is sup-plied with water from the Kurfürsten spring and offers an excellent place for refreshment with its small beach. Other highlights are the hills with their secret corridors and the World’s swing. But there are also activities for the little ones and a kiosk takes care of the physical well-being of the young and old visitors. Therefore, it is no surprise that this playground, which is unique in the region, attracts a lot of visitors on nice days.

But what would summer, sun and warm nights be without an exciting cultural program? And that’s why a variety of event highlights will attract a large number of visitors to Amberg apart from the beer gardens and summer fests. One event are the summer sere-nades. Every Sunday at 7 p.m. regional music groups invite visitors to enjoy their free concerts at the Maltesergar-ten. Additionally, the Amberg Summer Festival offers a cultural potpourri of cabaret, theater and extraordinary concerts from the end of July to the middle of August. This year’s concerts include southern music, Irish Folk, an evening with songs by Michael Jackson and a concert by Regensburg musician

Mathias Kellner and his band. All of these cultural highlights take place in the inner courtyard of the city library.

Another outstanding summer high-light is the exhibition “Rückschau in die Moderne“ (A Look Back at Mo-dernity) which is part of the bi-annual art presentations at the Amberg Con-gress Center ACC which offers a cross section of 20th century graphics and paintings.

The exhibition takes place from July 26 to September 23, 2010 and consists of 250 exhibits by 125 artists of internati-onal fame. The exhibition provides an

extraordinary look at an entire century of modern art and offers many surpri-ses, even for art experts. The exhibits range from the late impressionists to the pioneers of past modernism and features famous artists such as Dalí, Munch, Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Kandinsky, Kollwitz, Dix, Gia-cometti, Tinguely, Hundertwasser, Im-mendorff, Lichtenstein, Beuys, Warhol, or Christo. No doubt: This “exhibition of the century“ in the ACC promises visitors a true feast for the eyes.

Last but not least, the Amberg City Marketing Office and the stores invite

visitors to the “Air Night” on Friday, September 10, 2010. Since 2006, Am-berg has been the first and only city with an Air Museum and was awarded the title ”Air Art Location“ last year. That night, stores will open until 11 p.m. and an interesting cultural pro-gram will entertain shoppers. Artists, musicians and actors will perform on the streets and the squares of the old town as well as on the Vils river, fea-turing the air in their performances based on the motto “Experience air, see air, hear air and understand air.“ Lots of visitors are expected to follow that motto.

Nürnberg – where the Middle Ages are alive

NÜRNBERG, Germany - A visit to Nürnberg, the most beautiful city in Central Franconia, is always worth your while. There is no city that is more beautiful or diverse. Red sand-stone buildings and half-timbered houses define the look of the center of the medieval old town. The small lanes invite you for a stroll.

On the Hauptmarkt (main market place) visitors can admire the 19 meter-tall Gothic fountain sculpture which is richly decorated with historic and al-legoric characters. The so-called Schö-ne Brunnen (beautiful fountain) was built 1385–1396 by Heinrich Beheim. Over the years, it has been renovated and rebuilt a couple of times. Today, you see a nearly one-hundred year-old, colorfully decorated copy made of shell limestone on the Hauptmarkt. The few remaining parts of the ori-ginal fountain are on display at the German National Museum (restored 1899–1903 by Heinrich Walraff it was rebuilt in its current form 1912 based upon the weathered Gothic original). During World War II, the Schöne Brunnen was protected by a concre-te encasement and therefore survived the bombardments without getting harmed. The forty colorful characters, displayed on four stories, portray the way in which people perceived the world during the Holy Roman Reich. Well-known are the turning rings in two of the eight grates (made in 1587 by Paulus Kühn from Augsburg) which fence in the fountain. It is unknown when the original rings were installed but they were replaced many times over the years and today’s ring on the south-western side dates back to the year 1957 whereas the second ring,

made of iron, on the north-eastern side was inserted in 1902 and has been there ever since. The brass ring is considered a good luck charm. The legend says that if you turn it, you will have many children.

The old town hall with its windowless prison cells in the basement is nearby, east of St. Sebald Church. From the west, the town hall is still an impressive baroque building built by the architect Jakob Wolff the Younger although it had to be largely rebuilt after 1945 (in the course of that it was downsized by two window rows). An originally Go-thic hall is integrated into the building’s southern part. The building is a mix-ture of a renaissance palace and local architecture of the 14th century. Visi-tors should not miss the old meeting room of the town hall and the historic prison cells.

Then follow the street up to the Cast-le Mountain where the impressive Emperor’s Castle is majestically loca-

ted. From 1050 to 1571, all German emperors of the Holy Roman Reich temporarily resided there which made the castle one of the most important emperor’s fortresses of the Middle Ages. It was generously expanded by Friedrich Barbarossa and his succes-sors. The emperor’s rooms in the palace with their mostly preserved wood pa-neling are richly decorated with pain-tings, tapestries and furniture from the 16trh and 17th century. The castle‘s large chapel has remained undamaged. The Tiefe Brunnen (deep fountain), which also belongs to the castle, was first mentioned in the 14th century but is most likely as old as the cast-le itself. With its 47 meter-deep well shaft it was the most important water source for the castle during the times of the sieges. The Sinwell Tower, the most famous landmark of the castle, is located in the castle’s inner courtyard. If you are not afraid of the many steps to the top, you can enjoy a fantastic view over Nürnberg. The Sinwell Tower (after the middle-high German word

sinwell = round, around) was built in the second half of the 13th century and originally was the castle’s donjon. Du-ring the Reichstag meetings, the hours were proclaimed from its roof with a tin horn. Here you can also visit a branch of the German National Museum fea-turing the weapons‘ department and a display about the history of the castle. If you need to recuperate after seeing so many historic treasures, you should definitely stop at one of the many his-toric Bratwurst kitchens in which even the famous German painter Albrecht Dürer and his contemporaries ate. True Nürnberger bratwursts weigh exactly 25 grams and at least come in threes and here you can taste them in all kinds of varieties: classically roasted, with kraut and kren (horse-radish), or as so-called Blaue Zipfel (blue tails), cooked in an onion broth.

But Nürnberg has more to offer as far as the culinary arts are concerned. In 1485, the first German cookbook was published here. The Franconian kitchen is rich in varieties and “ho-nest.” Simple, home-made dishes like Schäufala (highly recommended. You can enjoy one of the well-tasting beers from Tucherbräu Brewery with it, the only Nürnberg brewery founded in the Middle Ages that still is in business today. And the area around the castle with its many pubs is a perfect place for a night on the town.

There are many popular fests year round that offer you a great opportu-nity to get a taste of Nürnberg. They are the Spargelmarkt (asparagus market) in May, the Wine fest in June, the Alt-stadtfest (old town fest) in September, or the Fish Days in the fall. And don’t forget the true Nürnberg “Lebku-

chen“ (gingerbread). They are a Christmas specialty who bring back a lot of childhood memories with their spicy flavor and great taste.

One of the youngest fountains in Nürnberg‘s history is the Marriage Carousel or Marriage Fountain (Ehe-karussell) which was put up in 1984 on the square in front of the Weiße Turm (white tower). It is Europe’s lar-gest 20th century fountain featuring characters. The Marriage Carousel Fountain, whose real name is Hans-Sachs-Fountain, was commissioned by the city of Nürnberg. It was built from 1977 to 1981 by sculptor Jürgen Weber and put up in 1984. It is made of painted bronze characters, set on colored marble. Based upon the poem “The Bittersweet Married Life,“ that poet Hans Sachs wrote for his wife, the fountain portrays the ups and downs of marriage in six different pictures, ran-ging from the first years of passionate love to marital conflicts and death. Poet Hans Sachs himself can be seen on a pedestal as well. The Marriage Foun-tain is located directly in the center of Nürnberg’s shopping district, the pedestrian zone at Karolinenstraße and Breiten Gasse, that invites you on a relaxing shopping spree.

You should also visit the Nürnberg State Theater, originally known as the Nürnberg Opera. The Art Nouveau building was built from 1903 to 1905 by theater architect Heinrich Seeling and dominates the city’s silhouette. It was opened on September 1, 1905 with a performance in the “New Building“ which also included the musical piece “Festwiese“ from Richard Wagner’s opera “The Meistersinger of Nürnberg.” In 1935/36 the interior was redecora-ted by Paul Schultze-Naumburg and in 1945 it was hit by bombs. After it had been rebuilt, it was used by the United States Army as a movie theater and theater. It became an opera house again in 1956. Performances include opera, operetta, classic music, musi-cals, children’s concerts, chamber music concerts (in the Art Nouveau foyer) as well as recitals. Most of the historic part of the building, that was completely renovated in 1998, has been preserved. It features a main auditorium with a ground floor and three balconies with more than 1,000 seats as well as break rooms and a foyer. Since 2003, it is called “State Theater“ again.

Many interesting museums invite vi-sitors on a journey through time. At the Spielzeugmuseum (toy museum) kids and adults can enjoy an exhibition of old and new toys from around the world. Dolls, tin toys and much more are being kept here and there are a

lot of traveling exhibitions covering interesting topics. Nürnberg‘s history of two-wheeled vehicles is documented at the Museum Industriekultur (indus-trial culture). Brands such as Triumph, Victoria, Zündapp, Mars and Hecker still make a biker’s lovers heart pound violently today. The railroad worls at the Traffic Museum (Verkehrsmuseum) makes a child’s dream come true. It features a large model railroad with real rqailway control centers and old handcars to touch and use. You can also see trains ranging from a replica of the legendary “Adler“ to modern steam locomotives and ICE trains. History comes to life at the Albrecht-Dürer-House at the foot of the castle mountain. The famous painter Albrecht Dürer lived and worked here from 1509 to 1528. Agnes Dürer, the wife of this famous “son of the city“ takes visitors through this “living museum” today. Parts of the Sebald old town feature tunnels that were built in the 14th century. For many centuries, a variety of vaults and tunnels were cut into the stone below Nürnberg, creating a fascinating maze of shiny colored sandstone. This unique system of stone cellars was first mentioned in a do-cument from 1380 and was used for centuries to ferment and brew beer. Today, a small portion of the cellars is used to brew the beer specialties of the Altstadthof Brewery which you can tour. After the tour, you can taste the

special home-brewed beer and local dishes in the brewery’s Bräustüberl restaurant.

If you visit the Handwerkerhof (artis-ans’ court) you are entering a nostalgic part of Nürnberg with artisans‘ shops, stores, a gingerbread bakery, a Bratwurst kitchen and much more. It was built in 1971 as an attraction for tourists in the so-called “Waffenhof“ (weapons’ court) of the Frauentor (women’s gate) of the Nürnberg’s former city wall. It is located at “Königstor“ (King’s gate) and with that along the route pedestri-ans take when walking from the main train station to Nürnberg’s traditional tourist attractions.

The city wall is one of Nürnberg’s most famous buildings and pieces of art. In the north, the spacious castle is fully integrated into the wall. The first forti-fications are said to have been built in the 11th century. In the 13th century, the parts of the town located on both sides of the Pegnitz river and the Sebal-der and Lorenzer subdivisions each had their own walls. The Laufer Tower in the north, located in the Sebalder part of town, in-between the castle and the Tiergärtner Gate, has remained. In the west of the old town, in the Lorenzer part of town, the Weiße Turm is left. It wasn’t until 1320–1325 that both parts of town were connected by a wall leading across the river. In the west, the

Henkerturm (hangman tower) and the Wasserturm (water tower) can still be seen as well as the Schuldturm (debt tower) on Schütt Island in the east. The last wall around the city was closed in 1400. It was five kilometers long and looked like a crooked parallelogram. Four towers were built at its four cor-ners. Although widely restored and rebuilt, the city wall has almost com-pletely been preserved and encloses the old town. The largest gap, 310 meters wide, is located at the Laufer Torturm (gate tower). The preservation of the wall is an on-going process. There are public walkways behind, on and in front of the wall and in the partially preserved moat. The huge bastions west and north of the castle have been turned into gardens and open to the public in the summer months.

A visit to this diverse metropolitan city is definitely a “must“ and will de-finitely be an exciting experience. You can conveniently reach Nürnberg from Vilseck or Pressath by train. The trip to Nürnberg goes through the beautiful landscape of the Hersbrucker Schweiz region and is quite an experience! If you travel with a Bayernticket the trip is very affordable and you do not have to hunt for a parking space in the center of town. It is only a three minute walk from Nürnberg’s main train station to the old town.

Spend a day with your family at Schloss Thurn

NUREMBURG, Germany - When you enter Schloss Thurn adventure you are first greeted by the majes-tic castle and the beautiful lake that surrounds it. This leisure park offers a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere and not the noise, stress and hustle and bustle that characterize other parks. But that doesn’t mean that you will get bored here – on the contrary.

Knights with flags and lances, noble horses and spectacular sword fights are right in front of you: At Schloss Thurn adventure park you can really get close to the actors! The stunt men group “Haraldos“ has played in movies such as “Joan of Arc” and “Dragon heart.” Here, they fight in a knights‘ tournament every day like true heroes for honor and justice and the kids are excited when the real knights fight on their horses for the favor of the beautiful princess. The medieval fire spectacle, a knights‘ tournament by night, takes place every year at Schloss Thurn adventure park on each Saturday in August. The show lasts for two hours and is called “The Dragon King” this year. And the dra-gon will quickly draw your attention.

You are also in the center of the action when visiting the western town where the daring stunt men of the western show cause lots of action. In front of a very realistic scenery with an authentic saloon and true to original houses, the western heroes fight an exciting fight for law and order in town. Billy the Kid would surely have enjoyed a ride in the wild water slide or the auto scooter.

Aaaaahhhhhh: When the family rol-ler coaster speeds downhill, children’s heart start pounding and the most laughter is heard in the wild water slide when dad or grandpa get a little bit wet! The bumper boats cause a lot of excitement as well. Just like you do in an auto scooter, you can race yourself here on the water causing laughter that makes your eyes water!

Apart from action and fun, the park offers you and your family a lot more: you can experience nature with animals and an almost 600 year-old castle. This is not only unique but also for real! The castle was first mentioned in a document dated 1422. In those days, however, it was nothing more than a single tower with a towing bridge

which is what gave Thurn castle its name: a knight’s tower mansion. In 1738, the capitulars of Bamberg, the ancestors of the current castle‘s owner Benedikt Count of Bentzel, bought the castle and its land from the church. In the following eight years, architect Michael Küchel, a student of Baltasar Neumann, converted the building into the baroque moat castle that we are so impressed by today.

The castle has been owned by the fa-mily for 250 years. In 1973, Johann Friedrich Count of Bentzel Sturmfe-der-Horneck, the father of Benedikt Count of Bentzel, had the idea to build an adventure park around the castle which opened in 1975. In those days, the adventure park consisted of a small western town and a deer enclosure. There were also leopards and other exotic animals, which were sold in the late 1980s because it was believed that a zoo was a better home for such species.

The princess in the puppet theater that astonishes your kids and makes them laugh, however, is an invention. The new comedy show guarantees a lot of fun as well. The lead actors are Dinolino, the park’s mascot, and his totally crazy bird. There is also a ro-mantic fairytale forest for your little ones where small houses with electric puppets show scenes from the most famous fairytales.

While the kids may continue to pet animals, or have fun climbing in the climbing garden, parents can relax on the lawn in front of the baroque Thurn moated castle while enjoying classical music. Thurn castle may also be rented for weddings. The petting zoo offers visitors the chance to get in contact

with ponies, pot-bellied pigs, camels, llamas and goats, or watch deer in their enclosures. A total of 60 to 70 animals live in the park, not counting the cocka-tiels, parakeets, canary birds and other birds that live in the large aviaries. You and your family can row on the lake around the castle in a rowing boat, and if you are not exhausted after a day full of activities, you can enjoy yourself on the playground.

If being active makes you hungry, the park offers a lot of possibilities to satisfy your loved ones hunger for moderate prices. To ensure that eating is an experience as well, a number of interesting restaurants were built: You eat in a saloon in the large western town, cowboy-style with spare ribs or hamburgers. If you are a more inte-rested in romance, there is something for you as well: a culinary meal in view of the castle on the sun terrace of the “Romantiksaal“ restaurant where chef Günter Proksch offers fresh, homema-de and exquisite dishes every day. And if you need a short break, the coffee shop always offers you a latte mac-chiato and a delicious piece of cake in a relaxed atmosphere. For kids, an ice cream will always be the highlight of

every family trip. By the way: Entrance to the park is free on your birthday as well as five days before and after, regardless of whether you turn 4 or 99. Please bring you ID card for verifica-tion. Parking is free and dogs may be brought along if on a leash.

Adventure park Schloss Thurn can’t be compared to other adventure parks. The combination of nature, action and fun on the rides, all of which are suitable for kids and adults, in front of the unique backdrop of the castle and the family-oriented philosophy of the park cause a pleasant atmosphere that is enjoyable for young and old.

The symbiosis of action and excitement and experiencing nature make up the special attractions of this park. Here, young and old find what they are loo-king for. The high acceptance of this entertainment concept is shown by the number of visitors: Every year, 200.000 to 250.000 people visit adventure park Schloss Thurn.

Experience lots of excitement together while spending a relaxing day with the family: That is adventure park Schloss Thurn!

Beautiful palaces and castles in our regionThe most recent famous castle ow-ner was probably Nicolas Cage who bought Neidstein Castle near Am-berg-Sulzbach in 2006. He paid about two million Euro for it but sold the palace again in March 2009. A visit to Neidstein Castle is not possible because the new owner doesn´t allow it. The first castles of the Oberpfalz were built in the early 11th century to rule the land and to collect taxes. The Oberpfalz is the part of Bavaria with most castles.

Castle Falkenstein thrones over the town of Falkenstein on a tall hill. Alt-hough the construction work already started in 1074, the castle is one of the best preserved castles of the Oberpfalz. Castle Falkenstein is located in the Bavarian Forest between Regensburg and Cham. It is open every day and the entrance fee to the main castle is 50 Cent. Falkenstein also offers a hunting museum. It is even possible to arrange weddings, or a medieval banquet including medieval entertain-ment for up to 45 people, but you need a reservation for both events. More information can be found at http://burg-falkenstein.info.

Regensburg might be also quite inte-resting for people who are interested in history. The city, which was founded by the Romans, has been one of the richest and most important cities of the Holy German Empire for about 700 years. That’s why there are a lot of old histo-rical buildings to see like the Palace of Thurn and Taxis. Some members of the Thurn und Taxis family are still living in the palace, which is quite unusual for

old noble families in good old Europe. Hardly anybody knows that this palace is bigger than Buckingham Palace, the home of the Queen of England. Ori-ginally, the Palace of Thurn and Taxis was a monastery and was completed in 1812. The entrance to the baroque styled church is free. The palace itself and the monastery can only be visited in a guided tour several times a day at the expense of 11,50 €. You can also have a look at the treasury and the museum for 4,50 €. Audio guides are available in many languages, including English, of course. Other highlights of the season are the summer plays, or the Christmas Mar-ket. The family of Thurn and Taxis is an old German noble family that got rich because they owned the only post company. Later, they also founded a famous brewery of the same name. Both families, the Thurns and the Ta-xis, have originally been living in Italy, but in 1650 they were allowed to call themselves a member of the German high nobility. The Thurn and Taxis family is ruled by Prince Albert II at the moment, more famous, however, is his mother Princess Gloria. More information about the Palace can be found at www.thurnundtaxis.de

Taizé - A pendant and its origin

There´s no picture on which Lena Meyer-Landrut, winner of the Eu-rovision Song Contest, doesn´t wear a simple black pendant which is shaped both like a cross and a dove. But what does it mean? This jewelry called Tai-zé-cross is the best-known symbol of the monastery of Taizé in the north-east of France.

Every year, around 6,000 young people from all over the world visit this com-munity, spend one week with like-min-ded people to get new insights about themselves and their faith by talking, singing and just having fun together, or by enjoying the chilled and calming atmosphere. The ecumenical brother-hood was founded by Roger Schutz in 1949. He was a theology student who looked after refugees of World War I. As a result, The “Communauté de Taizé” was founded. In the following years, many other monks joined “Frère Roger`s” order. Since the 1960s it has become popular with young people to visit the monastery and to live to-gether with the brothers for a while. Even the murder of Frère Roger by a brainsick Romanian in 2005 couldn´t stop the large number of young people from coming to visit Taizé every year. This is due to the special atmosphere

of this place that can be felt every-where: during the five to ten minutes of silence during the church service, during the collective meals, where total strangers just sit together and talk like best friends, if somebody walks around and distributes free hugs, or when a person starts to sing a Taizé-song and five others standing around just join in. But the most important reason to come to Taizé is the religious aspect. Every morning there are introductions to the bible given by the monks. Af-terwards people sit together in little groups to talk about the bible texts, or their own lives.

Ekkehard de Fallois, vicar and con-tinuous Taizé-visitor says: “A must-have for every Taizé-pilgrim are the Taizé-crosses of which at least three are bought by each visitor.” These crosses – as well as other souvenirs like music-sheets, Taizé-stools or pottery - are made and sold by the monks. That´s the only way they make their living because they don´t accept donations of any kind, or let alone any heritage.Having once been in Taizé, you will surely return there for a second, third or fourth time, or even annually. You simply can’t miss the amazing commu-nity spirit. Or as Lena Meyer-Landrut described it: “It isn´t a feeling you have known before. It´s the Taizé-feeling - a huge amount of happiness.”

The dream of flying - with model airplanesKEMNATH, Germany - With the first rays of sun, a new season begins for the model airplane club of Kem-nath. The „pilots“ leave the multi-purpose hall of Kemnath, where very small, light and maneuverable model airplanes are used in winter, and change to their preferred loca-tion, the airfield for model planes in Kuchenreuth near Kemnath.

There they are allowed to use the big toys. Most “pilots“ test their skills in sunny weather and on the weekends.

The club counts 55 model makers at the moment. The club was founded in 1981. The committee, which is chai-red by Wolfgang Heidler, welcomes beginners heartily. It is also possible to watch the „pilots“ perform their loops and other tricks. There is only one condition if you want to fly a model airplane yourself: a special insurance.

By joining the club, you will get the chance to take out the insurance. The membership for teenagers up to 16 is free of charge. Otherwise, 30 Euro per year are required if you want to become a full member. There are model planes with electric motors and combustion

motors, but there is no difference in size or quality. Beginners need some special equipment in order to acquire the basic skills. You can buy everything in local model maker shops where experienced „pilots“ will advise you. Generally, it is wise to collect some information

about sizes, flight qualities and drive systems before you buy your first model. Then you can fully experience the joy of flying.

More information about the club, con-tacts and how to get to the airfield, can be found on the website www.msg-kemnath.de

Enjoy nature and discover culture in Eschenbach

ESCHENBACH, Germany - In and around Eschenbach there are plenty of opportunities to spend your free time and to have a lot of fun. On a hot summer day, for example, you can go to “Kleiner Rußweiher”. You can swim in it or relax on the big lawn. You can also ride in a pedal-boat or pass your time playing volleyball. Don’t worry about the mud on the ground, it is even said to be healthy.

Families with younger children are more than welcome. There are also some toys for them, so it won’t be boring. For families with kids, a low entrance fee is important. Rußweiher is therefore ideal because the fee is only 1 euro for a child under the age of 14. People older than 14 have to pay 1.80 euro. There are also some options to get a lower price, for example, if you buy an annual season-ticket. If you are interested in fishing, you are welcome to join the fishing club.

Once you are a member, you are allo-wed to go fishing on the lake, which

is about 27ha in size. There are a lot of fish in the pond, the likeliest one to find, however, is the carp, being the most typical fish of the region. When up to 20,000 kg of fish are taken out every year in autumn, many people come to watch. You can even disco-ver the “Rußweiher” by bike. A spe-cial cycle path leads around the lake. Next to the “Rußweiher” you can find a guesthouse named “Camping- und Freizeitanlage Rodler”. In its garden you can play miniature golf, eat ice-cream and relax.

A lake called “Großer Rußweiher” is right behind the “Kleiner Rußweiher”. Around it, many unusual and endan-gered birds like the black-headed gull can be seen. This area is part of the “Nördliche Oberpfälzer Wald” and it is a conservation area, protecting rare animals and plants. That is why a long trail around the pond was constructed to show the beauty of the local nature. If you take a walk around the pond, you should stay on the trail so as not to disturb the fauna. You want more

information about the development and you’d like to know where to find this place? Visit www.eschenbach-opf.

de to find brochures in English and German.

Another interesting walking trail is the “Holzweg” near Eschenbach. This path with a length of about 2km is designed like an adventure park for children. You can, for example, watch birds in their nesting boxes in a specially prepared house. You can also find an area with a little pond and a small pier. In addition, there is a playground with a wooden

tower. Right at the entrance to the “Holzweg”, there is a great pavilion in which you can find a map and some

useful information. One can say that children in particular learn a lot about the forest and the animals there by having fun at the same time.

As a matter of fact, there are lots of possibilities to spend your free time in the region. The options described above are just examples. You can find more brochures and information on the internet at www.eschenbach-opf.de.

Pure Adrenaline at the Kart Raceland Wackersdorf

WACKERSDORF, Germany - Mi-chael Schumacher, the most famous race driver in the world, excites and fascinates spectators and fans of For-mula 1 again and again. The professi-onal, who claimed the racing throne for the longest time in succession, is, of course, an influential role model for many fans. This creates questions like, when and where one can drive at full throttle like the champion. The answer: The Pro Kart Raceland in Wackersdorf.

The facility contains an outdoor track with a length of more than half a mile and an indoor track with a length of six hundred meters. This makes it one of the biggest Go-Kart-Racetracks in Germany. The outdoor track is a very fast course with extensive long runoff zones for safety reasons. The width is between nine and twelve meters. A specialty is a jumping hill and a very fast sharp curve.

A specific water disposal system and a special asphalt surface on the tracks result in a maximum grip and guarantee that there are no limits for Go-Kart-Fanatics. Furthermore special effects like fog machines, stroboskopes and a disco light installation create additional interest on the indoor track. Another highlight is the connection between both tracks thus creating two kilome-ters of gigantic racing fun.

No matter if you use a borrowed Go Kart or your private one, you can enjoy this great racing sport at. Everybody can feel like a race driver for ten minu-

tes for 12 euros. And even if you are not interested in getting into a Go Kart in order to spin a few rounds many events like Kartfestivals or competitions are offered. The „Racingday“ (03.10.2010), for instance, is a tuning festival, where car fanatics can represent their cars and show their adjustments to others.

One may have a beer and a chat with others about suggestions or comments in connection with their cars. There is also the „AvD Kart Challenge“(09.10 - 10.10.2010), an amateur race with teams from all over the world.

This license free racing series is meant for groups with two drivers, who race in teams with borrowed, but practi-cally new Go Karts. Thus, the Pro Kart Raceland is one of the biggest venues

for Go Kart racing within Germany. And, who knows, maybe you will meet

Michael Schumacher, who supposedly races there incognito.

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany - In August of 2009 the spark of an idea came out; build a football team in Grafenwöhr. On July 4, 2010 the spark became a raging fire when the newly formed football team, the Gra-fenwöhr Griffins, took to the field for their first game in franchise history.

The Griffins travelled to Neu Ulm (Southwest Bavaria) to face the Bar-racudas, a team whose roots reach back to the early 90s.

The Griffins won the coin toss and elected to receive. The kick-off was

returned by the Griffins to the Barra-cudas 30-yard line. Three plays later, Rolling Thunder (nickname of the offense) were celebrating their first Touchdown.

RB Xavier Redding ran a 12 yard sweep into the endzone for his first of three TDs on the day. The extra point attempt was missed so the Grif-fins took a 6-0 lead after less than two minutes of play.

The rest of the first half cooled down as the Griffins defense never allowed the Barracudas to leave their own half of the field. The offense though would march regularly downfield, but due to a rash of Center-Quarterback exchange mistakes, they could not punch the ball into the endzone, leaving the halftime score at 6-0.

The defense set the tone for the second half by hammering the Barracudas to minus yards on their first drive and stopping a fake punt. Rolling Thun-

der scored on the second play of their possession with a beautiful 30 yard run from FB Philipp Butz right up the middle of the Barracuda defense. After the successful extra point, the Griffins led by a score of 13-0.

The 3rd quarter also saw receiver, Alvin Burden run a 22-yard reverse in for a score, which finished the 3rd quarter up at 20-0.

The beginning of the 4th quarter the Barracudas crossed the 50 yard line for the first and only time that day. The Barracudas were able to score a TD and convert a two pt play. Rolling Thunder tacked on two more touchdowns from RB Redding and was set to close out the game with a 34-8 win when the Barracudas threw an interception to LB Dechant who returned it 48 yards for the final score of the day.

The Griffin defense ended the day allowing only four 1st downs, three interception (one for a TD), and not

allowing the Barracudas to cross the 50 yard line more than once in the game.

The Griffins next game is on July 11 in Passau versus the Pirates.

On July 18, 2010 the Griffins will have their homecoming game when they host the Bayreuth Dragons. Kick-off party starts at 2 p.m. with kids club activities (for all kids three-year-olds and up), BBQ, soda and beer followed by the kick-off at 3 p.m.

The American Football Department is proud to announce the establishment of a female football team, the Guardi-ans. This new team is coached by John McBride and Stefan Presel.

Downhill at the Bike-Region Ochsenkopf

OCHSENKOPF, Germany - Most hikers would not hike on those paths -- large stones, crevices, roots -- and yet, this is exactly the type of terrain every downhill mountain biker is dreaming of......

The downhill bikers almost look like roboters with their back protection, helmets and shin gueards. They meet at the valley station of the chair lift on the southern slope of the Ochsen-kopf mountain in Fleckl. Large groups of bikers from all over Germany and the Czech Republic come to get the five minute-adrenaline kick on “Bull-head-Mountain“ in the Fichtelgebirge mountains.

They fasten their heavy bikes onto the lift and reach the summit of the Ochsenkopf, 250 meters difference in altitude above them, within ten minutes. There is an almost contem-plative silence in the lift; everybody is concentrating on a five minute peak performance. A small path and a few warning signs lead to the start of the route. Helmets and glasses on -- and down into the valley.

Those who want to go down the more than two kilometers-long routes need skills, biking experience and some cou-rage. The routes are full of mountain steps, jumps and north shores. How-ever, there are always easier detours for the less skilled bikers. If you want to this downhill sports to become your hobby, you should participate in one of the downhill camps at Bullhead House where experienced downhill coaches teach you the right techniques.

Bullhead House, located right next to the valley station of the southern chair lift, also offers bikers everything they need for rent. You can rent true downhill bikes including protective

gear as well as hardtails and fullys for touring bikers.

One of the reasons why the Ochsen-kopf mountain has earned an excellent reputation among bikers is the “IXS Rookies Cup“ which was held this year for the third time on June 5-6. It offers the best opportunities for young downhill bikers and aspiring racers to get competition experience. Every year, the race offers lots of speed and bike action for the spectators along the route.

But the Fichtelgebirge mountains are not only an attractive region for downhill bikers -- it is one of the most attractive mountain bike regions in Germany. A large network of forest roads as well as exciting single trails offer touring bikers a lot of variety! In addition to the marked mountain bike routes in the Ochsenkopf region, there are many “insider” routes which you best experience during a guided bike tour.

The beautiful landscape of the Fichtel-gebirge Nature Park and the fantastic views from its highest summits such as the Ochsenkopf or the Schnee-berg mountain offer as much joy as the “flowing“ paths -- a fest for single trail lovers!

The biking classes offered by Franken Aktivurlaub, which are regularly held at the Ochsenkopf mountain, are a

great way for bikers to improve their techniques.

Several projects are in the works to make the Ochsenkopf bike region even more attractive. Recently, a north shore bike fun park, a training course and a

cross-country trail for bikers on the Bullhead were finished and comple-ment the Ochsenkopf Bike Park. The marked mountain bike routes around the mountain are to be expanded as well. Great prospects for bikers!

Bike-region ochsenkopf will get more attractive

Large stones, crevices, roots and yet, this is exactly the type of terrain mountain bikers can find at the Ochsenkopf.

What you can do to prepare your skin for summer

Skin needs special care in the summer time so you can enjoy a healthy and perfect tan. A healthy diet, rich in vitamins, is absolutely necessary if you want to have beautiful skin.

Theodora of Theodora’s Beauty Salon recommends several thorough peelings before and during the vacation to get rid of dead skin and to prevent sunburn. Applying a moisturizing body lotion and sufficient sunscreen is absolutely necessary. “And drinking a lot!“ adds Theodora. Because the sun and the heat dry out the skin and make it age faster. Always make that you drink enough.

“Never enjoy the summer in the blazing sun,“ warns Theodora. On the one hand because it is extremely damaging to the skin and on the other hand because you can also get a tan in the shade and that tan will last much longer because it is not only burnt into the upper layers of

the skin. It is best to never lie in the sun during lunch time but rather in the morning or in the late afternoon when the sun isn’t that aggressive anymore. Theodora advices to definitely get pro-fessional advice concerning individual needs and the necessary skin protection

before deciding to sunbathe. In general, one should never use too high a sun protection factor because the skin then tends to stop protecting itself. “One should not completely rely on sun pro-tection products,“ advices Theodora, “but should instead allow the skin to defend itself against the sun.“

The skin definitely has to be treated with a moisturizing lotion after sun-bathing because that’s the time when it is dry and stressed. A tanning spa, which one should not visit more than twice a month, is not healthier than the sun. It makes the skin age even faster and causes the skin to develop wrinkles.

If you want to use a self-tanning loti-on before going on vacation to avoid lying on the beach with bright white skin, definitely has to apply a peeling to the skin first. Especially the knees and elbows need a thorough peeling because the skin is rougher there. Dry the skin well afterwards and then wait

a half an hour before applying the self-tanning lotion. Otherwise, it won’t stay on the skin. You will receive the best results with a self-tanning spray. But be careful: Skin tanned with a self-tanning lotion is not protected better against sunburn than untanned skin. A self-tanning lotion is not a sunscreen lotion!

The painful results of a sunburn are best treated with ointments from the pharmacy or with natural treatments such as organic yoghurt or organic curd cheese. “Never try to save money if you stress your skin like that,“ says Theodora. That would be wrong and could lead to skin damage.

If you want to pamper yourself before going on vacation, or if you are loo-king for professional advice concerning sunscreens, feel free stop by Theodora’s Beauty Salon the friendly customer service will perfectly prepare you for the most beautiful time of the year.

The Q5 is the performance SUV from Audi(Audi AG) The Q5 is the performance SUV from Audi. It combines the dy-namics of a sports sedan with a highly variable cabin, making it the ideal companion for recreation and fami-lies – for active people.

Body and interiorAt 1.65 meters (5.41 ft), the Q5 is un-usually low by SUV standards and has the sportiest proportions of any vehicle in its immediate class. Its elegant and sculptured design is typically Audi. The side view is marked by large wheels and ascending lines; the fluid roof contour emphasizes its lean appearance.

The wrap-around tailgate is made of lightweight aluminum, as is the hood. The body integrates a large proporti-on of high-strength and ultra-high strength steel components that reduce the weight and improve rigidity, crash safety, and vibrations. There are three versions available for the add-on parts; Audi also offers attractive styling pa-ckages.

There is plenty of interior space, and the luggage compartment’s base capa-city of 540 liters (19.07 cubic ft) can be increased to an impressive 1,560 liters (55.09 cubic ft) by folding down the rear seatbacks. Audi can also deli-ver an optional rear bench seat, which features a load-through hatch and can be moved by 100 millimeters (3.94 in). There is also an optional folding seat back for the front passenger’s seat. The front seats can be adjusted, heated and cooled electrically.

drivetrainAudi specifies six engines for the Q5: three gasoline engines and three TDI units. All engines are direct injection units; five of them are turbocharged. The torque of the gasoline engines is further boosted by the Audi valvelift system, which switches the valve lift

in two stages. Regardless of the engine variant, the Q5 recovers energy during braking; the four-cylinders with ma-nual transmission also come standard with a shift indicator.

ChassisThe chassis similarly underscores the sporty personality of the Audi Q5. The five-link front suspension and the tra-pezoidal-link rear suspension consist largely of aluminum components; the large brakes ensure rapid deceleration. The optional Audi drive select control system manages the engine’s throttle response, the steering characteristics, and the S tronic transmission’s shift points. Two components which can be paired are adaptive damper control and dynamic steering.

The Audi Q5 also holds its own in rough terrain: the electronic stabilizati-on program (ESP) and anti-lock brakes offer modes tailored to offroading.

The ESP offers a clever function for road driving. If a roof rack is moun-ted, raising the center of gravity, then the system intervenes earlier at the vehicle’s limits – that enabled the Audi

engineers to configure the base charac-teristic for decidedly dynamic driving.

assistanCe and CommuniCations systemsOn request, Audi equips the Q5 with high-tech systems typical of the luxury class. Audi lane assist helps to main-tain the lane; Audi side assist warns of possible hazards while changing lanes.

The adaptive cruise control system keeps the performance SUV at a con-stant distance from the vehicle ahead; its integrated braking guard function alerts the driver to the risk of a col-

lision. There is a similarly appealing range of multimedia components available. The top-of-the-line is the MMI navigation plus with hard drive, intelligent voice control, and DVD drive. A Bluetooth telephone, a TV tuner, a digital radio tuner, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system can be integrated into this system.

The equipment, data and prices speci-fied in this document refer to the mo-del range offered in Germany. Subject to change without notice; errors and omissions excepted.

Your guide to the Munich Oktoberfest 2010

What is oktoBerfest? If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of Oktoberfest, here’s a quick overview: Between September 18 and October 3 2010, all of the major names in the German beer scene set up massive tents filled with long tables and decorated in a traditional Bavarian style. In order to get a seat in a tent, it’s important that you buy tickets in advance.

It is sometimes possible to get in wi-thout a ticket, if you’re very patient (or very pushy!) or generously tip the doorman, but it’s extremely hard to get through the crowds and into a beer tent without considerable advance planning.

Once inside the tents, revelers order huge liter mugs of beer, called maß. Most of tents have some kind of food and a few serve wine or coffee in addi-

tion to beer. Visitors listen to live music performed in the tents, drink lots of beer, sing along to Bavarian fold tunes, and dance on the tables. The tables are very long and crowded, so don’t expect a table for just your group. Everyone shares and sits close to ensure that as many people as possible are able to squeeze in. The larger tents seat several thousand people at once! In additi-on to lots of food and beer drinking, Oktoberfest is home to carnival rides, midway games, souvenir shops, and children’s activities. Although most of the attendees are German, Oktoberfest attracts a huge number of tourists each year from all over the world.

getting thereOnce you’ve reserved a place in a beer tent and donned your lederhosen or dirndl, it’s time to make your way to the fest, held at the Theresienwiese fest grounds in Munich, a short tram ride away from the city center. If you live in Bavaria, it’s probably easier to take the train to the Hauptbahnhof and avoid the parking expense and hassle altogether. If you think you’re lost, just follow the massive crowd of people wearing trachtenmode and you’ll even-tually get to the fest grounds. Literally every tourist in Munich and a good percentage of the locals will be there for Oktoberfest, so it’s nearly impossible to get lost if you follow the crowd. Signs

posted all over town point the way to the fest grounds or to the proper public transportation stop to get there.

making the most of itIt’s best to spend the night and avoid the hassle of driving or having a desi-gnated driver, so plan in advance and book a hotel as early as possible or you may be unable to find a place to stay. If you’re one of those people who waits until reaching a vacation city and just stays wherever looks convenient, you will likely find yourself sleeping in the train station because everything is com-pletely booked up. It’s really important to buy tickets to a beer tent if you’re hoping to get inside, since there are literally millions of people who come to Oktoberfest each year.

Buying tiCketsTickets can be purchased in advance for all 14 of the big tents, as well as some of the 20 smaller ones. Each has a unique atmosphere and slightly diffe-rent clientele. For more information on tickets and tents, you’ll find more infor-mation on www.mymilitaryconcierge.com – just look for the free Oktoberfest 2010 download.

Special Exhibit: “Überschäumende Maßkrüge“ - the1960 beer strike (!) in the Maxhütte , in 92237 Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Stadtmuseum, Neustadt 14 (ca. 20 km / 12.5 miles south of Vilseck)

Bavaria isn’t known as a beer country for nothing - when workers were de-nied their daily beer at the Maxhütte smelting furnace, they went on strike! On 02 March 1960, the new Director General of the Maxhütte reduced the

Recurring and Long-Lasting Events

beer consumption on his premises to one bottle per worker per day which caused a lot of annoyance.

But when on 01 October 1960 he for-bade the sale of beer within the plant completely, he created a huge storm of outrage: within just a few hours, the complete staff went on strike and the fire in the smelting furnaces nearly subsided / cooled off.

Only with the mediation of the Ba-varian Labour Minister Stain, a com-promise could be reached two days (!) later, and work was picked up. These happenings surrounding Germany’s only ever beer strike, and some chee-ky information about Bavarians and their love of beer are explained in this exhibition.
