GRAFENWOEHR, Germany. Germany’s Minister of Defense had a lot of reason for praise during his visit to Grafenwoehr Training Area.

German and American Soldiers show-ed the minister, who had come from Berlin accompanied by U.S. ambas-sador Philip D. Murphy, a training exercise relating to deployment as well as a large number of vehicles, tanks and enemy IEDs, but mainly their joint training.

Germany’s Tank Pioneer Battalion 701 is training with the 9th Engineer Battalion of the 172d Infantry Bri-gade, the U.S. Army’s largest brigade stationed in Europe, at Grafenwoehr Training Area. This brigade has a long history filled with many changes, deac-tivations and reactivations and various deployments to Iraq. The unit was com-mended for its exemplary performance during deployment.

Together with many local politicians, representatives of the German Army and many representatives of the U.S. Army, zu Guttenberg was very pleased

about the growing and strong part-nership between the German and the American unit and emphasized once again the importance of joint training for both Armies.

The visit of the Minister of Defen-se was met with a kind reception by both, Germans and Americans. It did not only strengthened the partnership between the German battalion and the 172th Infantry Brigade but was also an important signal for the endurance and importance of German-Ameri-can friendship which zu Guttenberg praised many times.

German Minister of Defense in Grafenwoehr

GRAFENWOEHR , Germany - A Transall C-160 brought the German minister of defense and U.S. ambas-sador Philip D. Murphy from Berlin to Nürnberg. Half an hour late, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg arrives on the U.S. Army training area on August 24 at 10.35 a.m. Many clicking and ready cameras, sharpened pencils and blinking laptops are impatiently wai-ting for him.

Well-known German journalists from ARD, RTL, BR, the U.S. media and the German Army media as well as countless local journalists are crowded in the back rows of the tent.

Zu Guttenberg‘s charisma is one of friendliness and competence and al-ways precedes his convincing public appearances. Dressed comfortably and appropriately for the training area in hiking boots and a sporty outdoor out-fit, he walks ahead of his entourage with fast, elastic steps. Attentively he welcomes every mayor, local politician and all commanding officers of the U.S. Army who take their seats next to him in the first row, directly in front of the lectern.

Lt. Col. Kurt Dannenberg, commander of the German Army’s Tank Enginee-

ring Battalion 701 since September 2009, is starting the presentations. He gives a short presentation with a lot of photos. He is very capable of telling the minister everything about the mission and the deployments of his battalion after two deployments to Afghanistan. The battalion was formed in Gera, Thu-ringia, in 1991 from remnants of the former East German National People’s Army. Gera has been a garrison town since the 13th century.

The battalion is training with U.S. sol-diers to prepare for a deployment with the European Union Battle Group starting in November 2011 as well as another deployment to Afghanistan in 2012. While Dannenberg exp-lains the various pillars of training, zu Guttenberg honestly states about the equipment that “…this means we have a backlog here.“ Yes, we do, Mr. Minister of Defense.

The German soldiers train combat ope-rations with the U.S. soldiers and profit from the U.S. counter-IED training.

These joint units have been formeed to foster mutual exchange and friend-ship. At the end of the presentation, zu Guttenberg shows his language skills and thanks everybody in German and English. He emphasizes that the most important event for him on that day to him is the dialogue with the soldiers. He states that for him, the joint trai-ning on Grafenwoehr Training Area is a strong expression of the friendship between Germans and Americans.

During the subsequent demonstration of the construction of a bridge, one of the most important tasks of Tank Engineering Battalion 701, the first female captain of an engineering unit in the German Army explains the role of the battalion regarding the comple-tion of the bridge to the minister of defense. Afterwards, the U.S. Army presents its counter-IED equipment to the Ger-man minister of defense. IEDs pose the greatest danger in the forward ope-rating areas in Iraq and Afghanistan. Later, the press conference is drowned after only a few minutes by a heavy rain shower. Unimpressed by that, zu Guttenberg comments on his plans to restructure the German Armed Forces which he had presented in Berlin the previous day.

He said that new structures and per-spectives are essential for the under financed German Army. The minister emphasizes that especially the soldiers are demanding a change. He adds that his reform is not intended to be put on paper only but that his intent is to see it through with him at the helm. The goal for the German Armed Forces is to become an attractive employer in Germany. Currently, there are already more candidates waiting to become

professional soldiers than the German Army has open positions.

The security of Germany is of utmost importance to zu Guttenberg and he believes that an efficiently deployable, smaller professional army will be an important basis for it.

As the minister got into his limousine, only few rain drops were still falling onto the range. Just a few minutes later, a blue and white helicopter takes him to the next stop of his summer trip. On August 22, he welcomed visitors in the Department of Defense during open house, on August 23, he presented his plans to restructure the German Army, on August 24 he visits Grafenwoehr, on August 25, his wife Stephanie zu Guttenberg will present her support to a charitable project, and on August 28, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg will arrive for a two-day visit in Afghanistan.

Hats off to such a large amount of presence and stamina, Mr. Minister of Defense!

ESCHENBACH, Germany - St-arting on Sept. 27, the Volkshoch-schule Eschenbach offers German classes for foreign citizens again. They take place every Monday and Wednesday from 6 – 7:30 p.m. and every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 - 10:30 a.m. at the VHS Eschenbach, Karlsplatz 29 in Eschenbach.

USAG Graf searches for alternative energies

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany - The U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr has been searching high and low for ways to preserve energy and make the transition to using more renewable sources of energy in accordance with the Installation Management Com-mand Campaign Plan.

Measures, such as lowering room tem-perature during unoccupied hours, re-ducing excessive street lighting levels, or installing motion sensors and ti-mers have already been implemented at USAG Grafenwoehr. For larger pro-jects such as total energy upgrades of buildings, projects have been developed with the estimated funds requested.

Currently, three large photo voltaic systems are being installed at Rose Barracks and two on Main Post with a total investment of $1.5 million. Additionally, a contractor is instal-ling solar collectors for the generation of hot water at the Main Post Fit-ness Center. Recently, more than 20 participants, mostly members of the garrison’s Energy Tiger Team, toured several facilities in Neustadt County to gather additional ideas for maximizing the garrison’s energy efficiency. Like USAG Grafenwoehr, the County of Neustadt is pressing hard to explore and implement renewable energies, County Commissioner Simon Witt-mann said. The county’s goal is to show a carbon dioxide neutral balance on county-owned facilities through the use of locally produced energy sources.

In Eschenbach, an innovative vege-table oil cogeneration plant produces electricity for sale while the cooling water from the generators is directed to heat exchangers for heating an adjacent school. In addition to these measures, a wood chip boiler was installed last December, which increases the total capacity of the heating plant. As a re-sult, a stand-by oil fired boiler only needs to be activated during heating peak demands (a few very cold days during the winter season).

In order to optimize the system, an obsolete fuel oil tank was remodeled

to be used as a hot water storage tank. During hotter days, passively heated hot water can be stored here and used during colder days. The system is being monitored by an energy monitoring and control system (EMCS), which transmits all data to the county office at Neustadt/WN.

The fuel sources, i.e. vegetable oil and wood chips, are both locally generated renewable sources coming from this region, Wittmann said. He suggested that the USAG Grafenwoehr could also benefit from the wood chip re-sources potentially available from the Grafenwoehr Training Area if the garrison had similar systems in place.

Participants also toured the Geological Center in Windischeschenbach and vi-sited a biogas generation plant in Weis-senbrunn. In Windischeschenbach, Dr. Frank Holzfoerster, head of the geological center at the “Continental Deep Drilling Well” (KTB), explained continental deep drilling in detail.

The group climbed the drilling tower and learned about this challenging pro-ject, which includes the earth’s deepest drilling well, produced for scientific and research purposes. During the visit of the exhibition facility, Holzfoerster answered the Tiger Team’s “burning” question: Is using geothermal energy economical for heating facilities at USAG Grafenwoehr?

The facility the team was standing in was heated with geothermal energy through the placement of 100-meter

deep wells serving ground loop heat pumps. The temperature difference between the bottom and the well co-mes to only 2-3 degrees Celsius, but this is sufficient to generate heating water with a temperature of 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) by means of a heat pump. With a low temperature heating system, i. e. a floor heating system, a building can be kept warm economically.

Heat and electricity is produced by for-ward thinking farmers within the regi-on. The last stop of the “Green Energy Tour” was in Weissenbrunn, which is close to Kohlberg where the group met an innovative farmer. Christian Lehner operates a biogeneration gas plant he designed and constructed in order to diversify his market. With the waste produced by his 100 cows, he fuels his plant and generates methane gas.

The technology uses a natural process where bacteria feed on the organics and produce the burnable gas which is being collected in large concrete and fabric container.

The methane gas produced is used to fuel two generators with a total capacity of 340 kilowatts. The electricity is sold to the local power supplier Eon with the exhaust heat from the generators fed into heat exchangers where hot water provides the heat for the entire adjacent village. At the end of the tour the experts agreed: Cows are an unlikely sour-ce for biomass energy production at USAG Grafenwoehr, however, the use of grass clippings and other biowaste for biomass energy production should be explored.

The U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr intends to learn from the experiences of the county Neustadt/WN in regard of renewable energy generation. 172nd Soldiers Awarded German Schützenschnur

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany - Sol-diers from the 9th Engineer Battali-on, 172nd Infantry Brigade receive the German Armed Forces badge for weapons proficiency, the coveted Schützenschnur, here, Aug. 25.

The opportunity to earn the Schützen-schnur for the 9th Eng. Bn. Soldiers took place during partnership training with the 701st Panzer Pioneer Battali-on. The Schützenschnur testing process requires soldiers to qualify in three different categories: pistol, rifle, and heavy weapon. The soldiers received instruction prior to qualifying on the range on using the German pistol, G36

assault rifle, and the vaunted MG3 general-purpose machine gun. For many American Soldiers, this is their first exposure to these foreign weapon systems. The soldiers shot in various

positions and at varying distances. “The G36 was easier to qualify on,” Spc. Ian Berneking, soldier 9th Eng. Bn., said. “But the MG3 took a lot of skill to get up behind a machine gun and put

the rounds where they needed to go on the target.” Maj. Bernd Oesteraus, headquarters company commander, 701st Pz. Pi. Bn., presented 23 Ameri-can Soldiers with the Schützenschnur award. “I was really proud presenting this award to the American soldiers,” Oe-steraus, said. Berneking said it was a great experience learning the German way of doing things and that he was very pleased with the results.

“I was ecstatic,” Berneking said. “It was a really good feeling to know that I qualified, and that I not only qualified, but that I was able to qualify expert.”

The 172nd Soldiers have been parti-cipating in a multinational training exercise with German soldiers here at Grafenwoehr since Aug 22. Berneking said he has enjoyed his time training with the German soldiers and he con-siders them a well-disciplined force.

For him, the training mediateed the-team aconcept of: one team, one fight. “It’s outstanding,” Bernking said. “We are doing good training with them; we know they have our back and we will have theirs for sure.”

VfW: „We honor the dead by helping the living!“

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany. The Veterans of Foreign Wars honor the fallen soldiers of all American wars by helping the living. They are a non-commercial organization that fights for the rights of all veterans and their families.

They are America’s largest war vete-rans organization and therefore their strongest voice, fighting for the impro-vement of veterans‘ support. The VFW was founded in 1899 after the veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) returned wounded and sick to the USA without any chance to work.

Since its foundation more than one hundred years ago, the VFW has spent millions and millions of volunteer work, supported the American youth, were one of the strongest supporters of patriotism and education and an unrelenting advocate for the American military, its veterans and their families.

Of all VFW activities, its aid programs have the strongest impact on the lives of those they aid and honor.

To make their help even more effici-ent, a trust, supported by monetary donations and donations in kind, was founded in 1996. Its mission is sim-ple: to heighten the awareness of the sacrifices of the American veterans and to support programs of political educa-tion, volunteer work and positive youth programs and medical, rehabilitative,

pedagogical services and employment support for the needs of veterans and their families.The Veterans of Foreign Wars has 2.2 million members on ap-proximately 8,100 military installati-ons. Tower Post 10692 at Grafenwoehr has 860 members. Building 505 on Grafenwoehr Training Area features a very cozy atmosphere. The veterans are real good friends, they help one another and enjoy spending their free

time together. Together with their fa-milies, they meet for joint grill parties, or just to talk.

To help veterans and their families, the VFW donate to the Wounded War-riors Project, a program that supports injured soldiers. “The government is not dependent on our help. We only give a little so the government can give a lot,“ says Joe Livingston. On post, the VFW also works with the boy scouts and add to the success of the German-American Volksfest. On Memorial Day, a day dedicated to the remembrance of the fallen soldiers, the VFW hosts a ceremony known as “Flags in“ to honor the dead. The members of Tower Post 10692 act more like brothers, than just friends. They stick together and work together to help others. Helping is not only an honor for them, it is also a true joy. .

Würzburg: The romantic gem of Lower Franconia

Würzburg, the beautiful city on the Main river, is located in the Bavarian district of Lower Franconia and is the fifth largest city in Bavaria. It is the bishop’s see of the catholic diocese Würzburg and celebrated its 1,300th city anniversary in 2004.

The most famous sight of the city is the Marienberg fortress, also known as Marienfeste. After passing through many gates of the impressive fortress, visitors first reach the Mainfränkische Museum, then a 100 meter-deep well, St. Mary’s Church and the princes’ Garden (Fürstengarten).

While you get a pretty good feeling of the size of the fortress by walking around it, you won’t notice the immen-se size of it until you walk back to the banks of the river Main through the vineyards of St. Burkard. The fortress was the seat of the prince-bishops, but vacated later for the newly built and more representative residence. reprä-sentativeren Residenz aufgegeben.

In 1981, the Würzburg residence be-came part of the UNESCO’s world cultural heritage. Commissioned by Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, it was built in baroque style from 1720–1744 according to plans drawn by Balthasar Neumann. A 600 square meter self-supporting roof, painted in the fresco technique by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, spans the staircase. The entry hall (vestibule) was constructed in such a way to allow the arrival of carriages drawn by six horses. The residential church (Hofkirche) is integrated into the southwestern part

of the residence building. The wine cellars of the state winery are loca-ted below the north and south wing. The residential garden (Hofgarten) on Rennweg is located behind the residence.

The Käppele Chapel was built by Balthasar Neumann. It’s silhouette can be seen from far away. It can be reached via a steep procession staircase. The view from above stretches across the river Main, the vast fortress and

the city of Würzburg with its many church towers. The city is the center of Franconian wine. The vineyards for Franconia’s most famous type of wine, the Würzburger Stein, and the three large wineries with the most tradition and their huge wine restaurants are located within the city’s boundaries: the Staatliche Hofkeller Würzburg, the Juliusspital and the Bürgerspital zum Heiligen Geist. All three wineries offer tours through their cellars and sell their wine on location.

Another specialty of drinking culture in Würzburg are the so-called Bäcken – wine taverns where you can eat your own food which you brought along. And since the 1980s, Würzburg has got its own Würzburg-style Bratwurst.

The city also has a lot of famous sons and daughters. Among them are phy-sics Nobel prize winners Emil Fischer and Klaus von Klitzing, writer Le-onhard Frank, composer Berthold Hummel, biologist and wine researcher Hermann Müller (Thurgau), Baroque architect Balthasar Neumann, the re-searcher that discovered the rays named after him -- Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, and the medieval minnesinger Walther von der Vogelweide. But Würzburg also offers a lot of fests: In January,

the city attracts visitors with the in-ternational film weekend, in February, Fasching is celebrated in the streets of the city, in March, the Spring Fest and the Remembrance Run (Gedächt-nislauf ) are held, in April, the Resi-dence Run (Residenzlauf ), in May, the Würzburg Marathon follows and the Africa-Festival attracts many visitors, in June, you can meet with friends at the Art Market, in the Würzburg Wine Village (Weindorf ), or at the “Umsonst und Draußen-Festival” (for Free and outside festival).

In July, the Mozart Fest and the Kilian Volksfest are celebrated, in August the historic citizens’ feast (Bürgermahlzeit) and the Prince-Bishop Residence Mu-sic Days (Fürstbischöfliche Hofmusik-tage) are held. In September, you can enjoy the wine parade and every other year the Mainfranken Trade Show, as well as the city fest and the theater fest. In October, the Shuttle Party, the Im-protheater festival, and the Würzburg Cabaret Days are held.

In November, the Würzburg Bach Days are another musical highlight and people meet at the Würzburg Econo-mic Symposium. The mood gets more contemplative in December during the Christmas Market.

Geiselwind: Bavaria’s best amusement park

GEISELWND, Germany. Appro-ximately 100 attractions, including three roller coasters and many rides, and five top shows full of magic and suspense can be found on the appro-ximately 400,000 square meters of Bavaria’s largest entertainment park.

Adventure rest stop at Autohof Strohofer in Geiselwind

GEISELWIND, Germany. When construction started in 1964 to close the gap of Autobahn 3 between Würz-burg and Nürnberg – directly through the fields of the farmers – Toni Stro-hofer had the idea for a great project.

In 1970, inspired by the opening of the rest stop Steigerwald, he became a part-time farmer on his parent’s farm and started working as a gas station attendant at the rest stop for ten years.

He constantly changed shifts to get to know the needs of the truckers during the different times of the day and the

night because his goal was to soon operate a rest stop himself.

It was opened on June 26, 1981. After only a short time, the Geiselwind rest stop had an immaculate reputation among truckers. Toni Strohofer wanted to give the truckers, whose hard work is honored by hardly anybody, some quality of life.

The rest stop grew quickly and with time, so did the expectations of the truckers. Soon, it developed into the largest rest stop in Europe and an employer of 200 people – an oasis on A-3, as a televison report once called it. Festivals, such as the trucker and country festival in the spring, are held

year-round at the event area and in the music hall.

Church services for truckers are held in the Autobahn chapel, and enter-tainment is guaranteed in the Magic Casino and Internet Cafe. After a long day, you can relax in the comfortable hotel.

A lot is offered for kids and dogs are welcome as well at the adventure rest stop. And the rest stop offers a gas station with a shop, a car wash and a garage.

Just stop by when you travel on A-3 between Würzburg and Nürnberg. It’s always worth a stop!

Students visit a radio and television station

ESCHENBACH, Germany. Inte-rested students had the chance to learn more about the daily life and work as an anchorman at the “Bay-erischer Rundfunk” (BR). Students of all ages from all over Bavaria took part in „TurnOn“.

In the course of our media seminar, we have already been able to write articles for “grafenwoehr.com” for the fourth time. Our seminar will also get the chance of having a radio appearance at the beginning of next year on “Radio Ramasuri“. So it was a wish of all 14 students in our course to take part in this event in Munich. One of the goals of our media seminar is to provide an insight into the work of modern mass media to learn as much as possible about the different jobs available.

During guided tours students had a chance to take a look behind the scenes of the “Bayerischer Rundfunk”

and to find out more about the many recording studios and methods of radio work. There was also the possibility to watch the live recordings, but of course the students were not allowed to take part themselves. In the numerous workshops, the participants had to sol-ve tasks given by the experts. There was much to learn about interview techniques, for example.

How to get the most interesting answers from interviewees is especially important during interviews. Many members of our seminar took part in a workshop on sports coverage. Hans-Peter Pull, a Bavarian legend in sport reporting and known as an expert in soccer, handball and winter sports, was

responsible for the workshop. The stu-dents learned a lot about interviewing techniques and how to speak freely while using a microphone.

The students had to describe different places in the broadcasting station and record what they see. Students were divided into three groups. The first group had to describe the cafeteria; the second group had to describe the lobby of the BR-building and the third group was sent to an editorial office of the radio station „B5 Aktuell“.

In the end, Hans-Peter Pull corrected the recordings of the students and told them how to improve them, especially in live reporting. At the beginning of next year, we will cover a full hour on the local radio station “Radio Ramasu-ri“, so it was quite an important lesson for us. All of us acquired some impor-tant knowledge.

My schoolmate Christoph Frank told me: “It is interesting to see what you are listening to all the time.“ Lukas Brunner and Alexander Bauer explai-ned: “It was a great experience we will never forget. We had a great insight into the world of radio and all the jobs this profession has to offer. Because of the many people, rooms and recording studios you can see at first sight that work never stops here.“

Maxhütte: A steel colossus in the Upper Palatinate

SULzBACH-ROSENBERG, Germany. The Maxhütte, a giant industrial monument, is located in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, 40 kilometers from Grafenwöhr. After completing the construction of the factory in 1892, the Maxhütte became the re-gional center of processing iron ore.

Its name comes from the Bavarian King Maximilian II. Joseph and its main purpose was the production of iron and steel. Tracks made of steel also have their origins in the Maxhütte. In order to get pure iron, iron ore and coke are stacked alternately in a blast furnance; the heat removes the melting iron from the ore.

After a blast furnance has been acti-vated, it usually runs for at least ten years. That period is called “Ofenreise” (furnace journey). The blast furnance that was built in 1957/58 is the last one in Bavaria and the second-oldest in Germany. After two bankruptcies, the Maxhütte was closed in 2002.

Currently the Maxhütte can´t be vi-sited, but the plan is to convert the Maxhütte both into a cultural heritage site and a cultural forum. This is due to its age and its unique technical fa-cilities, for example the steam engines. While the Maxhütte was producing iron and steel, another object developed as well - a mountain of slag which is 55 meters high. Slag is a waste product of using the blast furnance.

The slag had been accumulating to form a mountain since 1907. With the intention to protect the environ-ment from pollution, Bavaria´s biggest project for redevelopment was under-taken in the fall of 2005. Therefore,

the surface of the mountain is being stabilized and shrubs are planted on

it. The project will be finished by the end of 2012.

Currently the Maxhütte can´t be visited, but the plan is to convert the Maxhütte both into a cultural heritage site.

Experience old brewing tradition by bike

MITTERTEICH/ESLARN. zo-igl beer is a culinary specialty of the Upper Palatinate. The zoigl route is a cycle path which leads past former and active breweries documenting both historic and present beer tra-ditions.

The starting point of the Zoigl cyc-le path is in Mitterteich. From there, the 115 km-long cycle tour first leads to Falkenberg where you pass the lo-cal brewery below the castle. Having passed the romantic “Waldnaabtal” where you can rest at the idyllic “Block-hütte”, you reach Windischeschenbach.

The town is known as the „capital of Zoigl beer“ because of its 16 Zoigl pubs. Following the river Waldnaab, we continue to Neustadt. The castles “Lobkowitzschlösser” and the show glassworks are worth seeing there. It’s possible, however, that beer lovers may prefer a trip to one of the many Zoigl lounges. The Zoigl beer is brewed in

an open brew kettle in a local brewery. Unlike today, all ingredients used to be produced by the brewers themselves. „A Zoigl tastes best if you use hop

from Hallertau,“ the experts say. After aging in open barrels for some weeks, the beer is served by the home brewer. The Zoigl icon on the doorstep, which

is similar to a six-sided Star of David, announces the beer to its guests: Here the Zoigl beer is served and here the unfiltered beer can be drunk in a re-laxed atmosphere.

After passing the towns of Weiden, Pirk, and Irchenrieth you reach Leuch-tenberg with its famous castle festival. The next stop is Vohenstrauß. From there, the section to Pleystein is shared with the Bockl cycle path.

This section is particularly family-friendly. The last leg of the tour leads through Moosbach to the final desti-nation of Eslarn, where you can finish off the tour with a hearty snack and fresh Zoigl beer.

Tip: Until October 3, a bus shuttle service for both bicycles and passen-gers runs in both directions between Eslarn - Vohenstrauß and Weiden on weekends and German holidays.

Historical “Thanksgiving Parade” in Kastl

KASTL, Germany. The traditional “Erntedankfest” (Thanksgiving) took place in Kastl on the weekend of Sep-tember 17-19. This huge event was celebrated by a colorful and manifold program. The event started on Friday with a typical Bavarian card game, called “Schafkopf.”

A lot of players took part to win at-tractive prizes. On Saturday, a festive service was held in the church of Kastl. In the evening the brass band of Kem-nath, the church choir of Kastl and others played typical Bavarian music.

Another Bavarian tradition was shown, the so-called “Schuhplattln”. It´s an old dance, which is still known and often performed during Bavarian fests. The name is derived from the word shoe (Schuh), whose soles you have to touch at certain times.

The historical ”Erntedankzug“ (Thanksgiving Parade) was held on Sunday, September 19. “Erntedank” or Thanksgiving is the event, where farmers take some of their harvest to church services to offer thanks for the good harvest.

In Kastl, farm life was shown as it used to be in the past. More than 25 floats entertained the crowd and illustrated peasant life in an entertaining way. You could see how a wedding was celebra-

ted, bread was baked, what school was like and other interesting things you ever wanted to know.

After the parade, you had the oppor-tunity to take a closer look at the floats and typical Bavarian traditions conti-nued to be performed.

Traditional music was played by a band in the afternoon in a pavilion. Completing the successful weekend in Kastl, was the “harvest dance” which was performed by young farmers.

The audience enjoyed the show. The historical “Erntedankzug“of Kastl takes

place only every ten years and was es-tablished in 1950.

Almost 500 participants and all clubs and groups in Kastl are involved to reach the goal to make people feel as if they were transported “back in time.”

It’s time to say: “Onto your boards and surf !“

STEINBERG AM SEE, Germany. Hot weather, beautiful nature and water-skis under my feet, what more could one wish for? To experience all this, three friends of mine and I were on our way to Schwandorf since the waterski and wakeboard park “Wild Wake and Ski” is located at Stein-berger Lake.

As soon as we arrived, two employees with a lot of know-how explained eve-rything about the site to us. You can deside reither wakeboards, waterskis or kneeboards.

They gave us the advice to take wa-terskis because it’s easier for beginners. Every one of us had to pay 25 Euro for two hours. The price included the fees for the waterskis and a wetsuit.

More professional water skiers can also buy various kinds of water sporting

goods and accessories in the adjoining ProShop. After the registration, each of us got a green wristband with the time at which we had to leave the place.

The new ropeway is perfect for be-ginners because it is straight and the responsible staff is able to control the speed.

After some wet attempts, we found the key to success! You easily lose your balance if you lean forward too much.

When we were finally able to apply this trick, we were able to switch to one of the bigger courses. When we had completed the first full round, we got a feeling of success and started to enjoy the trip to the fullest.

“This is a real alternative to all the other popular and too well-known leisure time activities,” said Lucas Baier of Grafenwöhr.

After two hours of waterskiing we handed back our equipment and had something to eat in the nearby restau-rant watching the other skiers.

To put it into a nutshell: “Wild Wake and Ski” can be recommended as a perfect tourist attraction for kids from the age of eight and their families. Mo-reover, there are other attractions like a pirate rally in the “Seebad Steinberger See,” or a go-kart track around it as well as many other recreational activities. DIEßFURT, Germany. A new attrac-tion has been added to our area. The refreshing gravel pits in Josephstal/Dießfurt are the perfect place to re-lax. Although the construction has not been finished yet, the seascape is already an alternative to the popular lake resorts in Eschenbach, Pressath and the Grafenwöhr outdoor pool.

To permanently establish American football in “Graf,“ the founders of the Grafenwöhr Griffins, Jim Miller, Brain Jansma and Marco Weissen-born of the SV TuS/DJK are entering into the next phase of their project, the establishment of an A- and B-youth team, not even a year after founding the team.

During the foundation of the men’s team, many youths had already voiced their interest in American football and stayed despite the absence of a youth team. Currently, the Griffins‘ youth consists of seven boys, age 14 to 17. The young players currently train and play with the SG Neumarkt/Regens-burg, or sometimes with the adult team.

Flag football for boys and girls, age eight and older, will also be established to intensify the work with youths in Grafenwöhr.

To make all of this possib-le within a short time, coaches and team ad-visors are desperate-ly needed. If you are interested in taking part in the expan-sion of the project “American football in Graf,“ or know somebody who would be interested, contact the Griffins (see contact information).

Unfortunately, the game against the Neu-Ulm Barracudas on September 5 had to be cancelled because Neu-Ulm was taken out of the league by

the AFVBy Federation after cancelling two consecutive games. The September 8 game against the Passau Pirates was postponed until September 12 because the football fields were unplayable.

The Griffins used the summer break to train hard and strengthen some positions with new players. WEIDEN, Germany. The pro-fessional team of the 1. EV Wei-den, called the “Blue Devils,“ last played in the ice hockey upper league. In the season 2009/10, the team plays in the fifth class state league Bavaria-North.

In 1985, after it became known that an ice stadium would be built in Weiden, a few ice hockey fans founded the 1. EV Weiden. In 1987, the first team of the club started playing in an official league. The first friendship game was played on Sept. 4 against ESV Bayreuth in front of an audience of 2,300 spectators and was lost 1:19. In the first season in 1987/88, the team played in the state league and finished fifth.

In the following season, the 1. EV Weiden finished third and won the play-offs, advancing into the Bavaria League. Apart from playing successfully, the number of spectators at the nine home games increased. The team started the season 2009/10, like the previous season, in the northern group of the state league and on the last day of the play-offs successfully advanced into the Bavaria League.

The Blue Devils Weiden have become a stepping stone into higher leagues for many players. The exemplary youth development work and the many players that have advanced through all youth teams form the backbone of the first team and are the most im-portant foundation of the club. Local, ambitious players paired with good, but mostly unknown and therefore affordable foreign players form a team that captivates fans with team spirit, morale and passion.

Queen of Bavarian Kirchweih Fests starts in Fürth

FÜRTH, Germany. When you smell roasted almonds and bratwurst and the sound of loud music from the street, then it’s time for Kirchweih, or „Kärwa“ as the residents of Fürth say. The fifth season starts when the time of the Michaeliskirchweih begins.

A time in which your regular Fürth residents do not mind road blocks, detours, traffic jams or loud noise. Du-ring that time, the usually ill-tempered Franconian is good-humored and ce-lebrates downtown. Normally, each Kirchweih follows the same pattern: a festive church service, beer tent, music. Is that any different in Fürth? Here they celebrate the anniversary of St. Michael’s Church very hard. For twelve days, Fürth is in a state of emergency.

The Thanksgiving parade and the open stores are the highlight on Sunday, October 10. The celebration takes place in the heart of the city. Various streets and one federal road turn into a fest ground for the visitors. Rides, sales booths and beer and food booths re-place the cars. Franconian specialties such as baggers, onion cake and new

wine are being offered. And there are, of course, bratwurst, schaschlik and steaks. other culinary highlights are baked fish, tree trunk and magenbrot made of gingerbread. Talking about gingerbread – gingerbread hearts with funny statements such as “Mei Wag-gerla“ on the one “Mei Scheißerla“ on the other side can be found.

You won’t find a beer tent. Fürth’s Kirchweih is a pub Kirchweih! You visit one of the many pubs and res-taurants. One of the specialties is the Franconian carp. But don‘t worry – food isn’t everything. There is a lot to discover when you walk through the kilometer-long street of booths to get the necessary work-out after eating. The sales booth are something special at this Kirchweih. Here, you

cannot only find typical wares such as pans, watches, curtains, or panty hose but also some carnival barkers. The most famous one is probably the “Billige Jakob“ (cheap Jakob), following old market traditions.There is a lot to discover when strolling through the

streets. Rides for the young and the old provide fun for all age groups. Lottery and booths testing your skills complete the wide variety of offers. So you should plan for your stroll across the Kirch-weih to last two to three hours. Apart from the Kirchweih run, a street run for everybody, and the fest fireworks, the Thanksgiving parade is the high-light of Fürth’s Kirchweih. The parade takes place at October 10 and starts at 11.30 a.m.

More than 70 different traditional clothing groups and bands parade through downtown. Every year, more than 100,000 visitors enjoy this spec-tacle. After the parade, Fürth’s residents stroll through the pedestrian zone to enjoy Sunday shopping, or to get a good deal at the Kirchweih. A lot is offered to keep you busy. The Kirchweih goes Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. For more interesting information, go to www.michaeliskirchweih.de. Café and Art Barn are open every Sa-turday 14:00 - 17:00, on Sundays and German holidays 14:00 - 18:00. The whole property is a smoke-free zone, except for the little smoker’s corner under the apple tree.

Bavaria isn’t known as a beer country for nothing - when workers were de-nied their daily beer at the Maxhütte smelting furnace, they went on strike!

Master pieces from seven centuries - from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century - are on disply and allow an insight into the large variety of the coll-ection in Bamberg, e.g. with paintings from Lucas Cranach, Pieter Breughel, or Otto Modersohn.

Dahlia Madness on the Isle of Mai-nau (78465) in the Bodensee (Lake Constance).

The sight of over 12,000 (!) dahlias in over 250 different species will leave you in awe! You have a chance to select your favourite species, too.

And although the Bodensee is a bit far from Northern Bavaria (i.e., on the Swiss border), it‘s certainly worth the trip.
