Graduation: Good Bye and Godspeed

-Tanya Nicole Fernandes

There are several titles that an individual will be

bestowed in their lives. The ‘Son’, ‘Daughter’,

‘Brother’, ‘Sister’ are the ones that last a lifetime.

There some that symbolizes important milestones.

The ‘Student’ was one we attributed during the

past two decades. However, on 25th May, 2013 for-

ty- seven Hotel Management ‘students’ became the

‘Graduates’. The excitement that each one of us

felt the moment that we walked through the gates

of Christ University (probably for the last time) was

palpable. Each one of us at the end those unpre-

dictable yet glorious four years had come into our

own. The ladies dressed in their white saris and the

young men looking debonair were all united for a

common purpose as we adorned our graduation

robes and walked in unison toward the grand audi-

torium. Led by our Class representatives, Ahmed

Sharif and Pruthvi Reddy, under the leadership of

our faculty Prof. Avin Thaliath, it was truly an impe-

rious moment. Despite our wardrobe discomforts

(the ladies in their saris), there were smiles all

around, from the teachers, the support staff and

the graduates as well. The convocation was solemn

and fastidious with wise words spoken by our es-

teemed Chancellor, Guest of Honour and Vice-

Chancellor. With the standards of Christ University

nothing less was expected. Over a thousand stu-

dents received their graduation diplomas that day.

As each student took the stage proud parents or

faculty members arose in standing applause. The

entire auditorium was overwhelmed with an air of

sheer pride and accomplishment.

It cannot be denied though that the actual excite-

ment was witnessed after the ceremony. Parents

scrambling to find their children in the exhilarating

chaos, fellow graduates congratulating each other,

and hugs and laughter all around.

Yet in spite of the ubiquitous happiness, there was

a tinge of sadness. This university provided us an

uncompromising gift of knowledge along with expe-

riences that will define the rest of our lives. It en-

couraged individuality, drove passion and identified

talent in each of us. Who would think that, that

very batch of students who entered the BHM first

year classroom way back in June 2009, would turn

out to be a remarkable group of professionals, em-

ployed by the likes of ITC Hotels, the Hilton, The

Hyatt and several others, entrepreneurs, future

scholars but more importantly united by a strong

bond of friendship that will last a lifetime.

As a young graduate pointed out in her valedictory

speech, Christ University has taught us six im-

portant lessons that can be summarised in the ab-

breviation of CHRIST- Coexistence, Honesty, Rela-

tionships, Initiatives, Sensitivity and Trust. Six Val-

ues that best sum up the graduating class of 2009-

2013. Christites now and forever!

TALE AROUND CRICKET STADIUM’S

AND THE DINING TABLE

-Behzad Tarapore

From the cricket field to food on his plate, this gen-

tleman has to have the best. Cricket flowed

through his blood, his father Keki Tarapore coached

many cricket legends of different generations right

from Kapil Dev and his favourite pupil Rahul Dravid

from the

age of

eleven. He

started off

by playing

cricket for

Karnataka

in the year

1980.

When his

cricket

career

came to

an end in

1987 the love for the sport didn’t die out, it trans-

formed into a very successful umpiring career.

Mr.Tarapore stood in his first one day international

in 1999 and has worked up the ranks until he

reached the ICC’s International Panel. Rated as the

No.1 umpire in India on the basis of performance in

the year 2010-2011. Shahvir Tarapore has officiated

in five seasons of the IPL. The legend Sachin Tendul-

kar refers to Shahvir Tarapore as his lucky charm

since all of Tendulkar’s top four scores were in the

presence of Mr. Tarapore as umpire, including Ten-

dulkar’s 200*.

Mr. Shahvir Tarapore gave it all for his umpiring

career, for which to remain in a physical state to

stand on the field for hours food is an essential part

of his success. Loves his non veg, fussy when it

comes to veg. with all the travelling he has come

across different kinds of cuisines and various dishes

but what he loves the most is “ghar ka khana” spe-

cially home made chapatis and parsi food. A perfect

match day for him starts off with a heavy breakfast,

preferably eggs, toast and a cup of tea, then during

the lunch break or between two innings of a match

something very light like a sandwich or a little

rasam and rice, when back home or hotel would

sneak out for his favourite evening snack pani puri,

then have a good dinner and salad is a must finish-

ing the meal with something sweet.

Mr. Tarapore’s health funda “food and exercise,

two very important parts of any sportsman’s life”

The Tuck Shop

- Amit Srikumar

After a long day at college, it was quite a pleas-

ant evening after my friends and I decided to visit

“The Tuck Shop” the endeavor of two Christ

Alumni and our Seniors Mayank Agarwal and

Ahmed Sharif. The cosy restaurant is tucked away

in a nook in Koramangala.

The restaurant has a relaxing and comfy feel

around it. They serve a variety of food and the JOD

(Juice Of the Day) is quite amazing especially the

Aam Ka Panna that we were served, but the true

clincher was the burger and the bacon. They have a

well planned menu which is continually being ex-

panded. Upon questioning them, Mayank told us

that they were inspired by the name “The Tuck

Shop” after the stalls they used to have in Cottons

which were set up once a year. The ambience and

the feel of the restaurant is quite appealing to

one’s palette and the service is excellent.

Apart from the overall ambience even the menu is

quite well-designed with catchy names for the main

dishes. They even provide Board Games to the cus-

tomers to while away the time, if one is looking for

place to relax and enjoy good food, “The Tuck

Shop” is the place to be!

The Running of Los Toros

-Bryan John Fernandes

As you can tell from the title, this is about the bulls,

also known as Toros in Spanish; but this is not just

any type of bulls, it’s the bulls of Spain. The running

of the bulls is actually a part of a Festival that takes

place in the second week of July. The Festival is

known as

‘Sanermines’, It

all started in a

town called

‘Pamplona’

where bulls

were to be

transported to

the market to

be sold; this

took an ex-

tremely long

process so to

put this act into 5th gear they decided to use fear

and excitement on

the bulls. After a few

years the transporta-

tion of bulls to the

market, became a

competition.

I personally experi-

enced the Running of

the Bulls a few years

ago in another town

called Museros which

is in Valencia. The

event starts by

first installing

steel fences in a

street to create

a route for the

bulls to run. The

Run begins eve-

ry day in the

morning at 8AM

Sharp where a

the first rocket

is launched to

alert the run-

ners that the

gate of the

route is being

opened. The

second one is then set off after 4 minutes to alert

the runners that all the bulls (6 bulls)have been set

loose. The run is about a kilometer long. The Run

was also featured in the movie: “Zindagi Na Milegi

Dobara”. Recently they started tying fireworks and

balls of fire on the bulls’ horns, while they run at

night.

Welcome aboard

Juniors!

-Poorvi Iyengar & Srujana Sagi

As we began to write this article, the lyrics of a pop-

ular song – “Words are all I have to take your

breath away.”- resonated with us. We found this to

be true while speaking with the newest members

of the BHM family ,The batch of 2013 . The awe and

inspiration they expressed when talking about all

the speakers they had listened to in their orienta-

tion week just goes to show how influential words

can really be.

Full of excitement at taking their first steps

into university and coming face to face with the in-

dustry, here is what they had to say.

“ Executive Chef Amit of the Oberoi spoke to us

about time and hard work and of course the long

hours in the industry , the front office manager Ash-

ley Lobo of the Leela helped us to understand that

believing and having a vision will help us achieve

anything. Through my interaction with the alumni i

have learnt to focus on all of the segments the

course offers and be efficient in everything i do.”,

expressed Calvin

“I’ve learnt that its important to work hard and

never give up , and I'll fight any kind of discourage-

ment.” -Joshua

Navaz says that the talks from the various speakers

were an eye opener on skill differentiation in the

industry, quality adjustments, problems we face,

and most importantly, flexibility in the industry.

These students were indeed fortunate to

have been guided through their first steps into the

industry by experienced members of the hospitality

fraternity. They are all keenly looking forward div-

ing into their academic year. We wish them all the

best!
