Every year the Half Moon Bay Review asks administrators at Half Moon Bay and Pes-cadero high schools for the names of a few

top students to feature in this annual section. And, every year, the students are a revelation.

This year is no different. Graduates of the two Coastside high schools are creative, athletic, fun-

ny and, above all, disciplined. Top students are among the busiest of their classmates. In fact, it seems the more things a student has going on, the more likely he or she will simply be good at more things.

We didn’t ask the schools for the students with the top grade-point averages, necessarily. We

were looking for qualities that can’t always be captured in a number. We were looking for stu-dents exactly like the six we profi le here.

Read on and feel better about our future.— Clay Lambert

Contreras wants to help othersHopes to become a therapist after college

Carmen Contreras is the type of young woman who inspires confi dence.A casual run in a physical education class led a classmate on the

cross-country team to suggest she try out. Contreras did and quickly be-came a top runner. When she helped her mother, a nanny, with the children in her mother’s care, she earned some babysitting jobs.

So there is every reason to believe she will excel when she fl ies the Half Moon Bay High School coop upon graduation and moves on to Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont. She plans to study psychology with an eye to-ward becoming a therapist.

She’s also a realist.“I guess we’ll see,” she says with a smile. “I’ll go to Notre Dame and see

where I go from there.”Contreras managed a 3.5 grade-point average amid a busy extracurricular

schedule. She has always been a dancer, training with the Shely Pack Dancers nearly every day for years. In high school, she wanted to branch out. So she be-came a cheerleader and a member of the cross-country team.

She says she thinks staying busy is key to her success.“I do,” she said. “When you don’t have anything to do after school you get

lazy. You think you can put off doing your homework.”Contreras is particularly proud of her schoolwork in math and the scienc-

es. She says she really appreciated the approach of math teacher Janice Burke. “She makes you do your work and expects your best,” she said.

Congratulations Class of 2014!

Avid birder fl ies away to collegeValedictorian has excelledin classroom and dojo

Jaime McConachie is about to fl y the nest and that is ap-propriate for a budding ornithologist who went to the birds long ago.

McConachie is valedictorian of the Pescadero High School Class of 2014. She is headed to Willamette University in Salem, Ore., after graduation. And she plans to be busy — very busy.

“In an ideal world, I would get a double major in biology and Japanese Studies with a minor in math,” she says. “I don’t know if I can do all of that at the same time, but that’s what my goal is.”

She hopes to turn her biology studies into a career in ornithol-ogy. She comes by the passion naturally, having grown up in La Honda and the coast, where birds are everywhere.

“I’ll see 20-something species driving between Half Moon Bay and La Honda and Redwood City,” she said.

It all started with a camping trip to Utah.“My parents are really outdoorsy. So I was always a nature-

nerdy kid,” McConachie said. “We ran into some bird-banders when we were camping. They let me help, so here I am at 7 years old holding a little warbler.”

She was hooked. She was similarly hooked at a young age on Japanese culture. She has studied karate for 10 years, earning a black belt in the discipline. She did her senior project on Sam-urai and how they shaped Japanese society. “There is so much here that is interesting and fascinating,” she says. “Majoring in Japanese Studies would give me an excuse to focus on that.”

McConachie has spent her senior year taking classes at Ca-ñada College. That’s largely because she had taken everything Pescadero High School had to offer by the time she fi nished her junior year. She went to La Honda Elementary School before at-tending an all-girls middle school on the Peninsula, returning to Pescadero for high school.

“Pescadero was kind of like a road that got me to places that challenged me,” she said of moving on to Cañada College. “Pes-cadero allowed me to do that and tailor my classes to my specifi c needs.”

and chemistry among his favorite courses. He is entering Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, in the fall and will study indus-trial engineering.

He wore the suit for an earlier mock job interview giv-en in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay. While the process was good practice for all the se-niors, Mattel has already won a job, as a busboy at the Half Moon Bay Brewing Co. And he doesn’t need fancy clothes to impress.

To say that Mattel has been busy would be an under-statement. In addition to his job, he was the second base-man on the Cougars baseball team and participated in the school musical for the fourth time in his academic career. He hopes to continue singing and acting while in college.

“I sure hope so. It’s so much fun doing that,” he said. “The actual shows, you get a rush that you wouldn’t get any place else. I get so much joy out of doing that, and you get really close to your fellow cast members when you are doing it.

“It’s defi nitely diffi cult,” he said. “The musical and base-ball were at the same time. I would be at school from 7 in the morning till 10 at night. I never left. I for sure had some breakdowns. It was tough, but it was all too much fun to let go of.”

The future is uncertain, of course, but Mattel would like to return home some day. He says he is a small-town kid at heart and enjoys seeing friends everywhere he goes.

“I would love to live in Half Moon Bay,” he said. “It’s the best place in the world.”

Top student wantsto continue to help others

T he support she found at Pescadero High School helped to bring Elizabeth Chavarin out of her shell.

Earlier in her academic career, she was ten-tative, afraid to raise her hand in class. You wouldn’t know that now — she is vice presi-dent of the student government. She boasts a 3.5 grade-point average and is headed to Dominican University in San Rafael in the fall. She even played volleyball and basketball while at Pescadero High School.

“I was shy and didn’t want to ask a lot of questions,” she admits. “But the teachers are here to help you and they want to help you.”

As an example, she offered Pescadero sci-ence teacher Wayne Johnson.

“He makes everything really interesting and introduces us to new things,” she said.

Chavarin is herself a teacher of sorts. She tutors younger kids in English through Pu-ente de la Costa Sur. She speaks to her young charges from experience. She knows what it’s like to come from a Spanish-speaking house-hold into a predominately English-speaking school environment, and she thinks it only makes students stronger in the long run.

“I don’t think it is a bad thing. It just means we have two languages,” she said.

She plans to study nursing at college. It’s an extension of her personal philosophy.

“Helping people is just something that I like to do,” she explained.

HMB’sStrohm is a student of peopleEnergetic leader heads for Hampshire

Half Moon Bay High School senior Natalie Strohm is a human ball of kinetic energy. A top student with a 3.67 grade-point average, she

starred on the Cougar soccer and cross-country teams, and serves as a nanny for two area families.

And she does it all with a smile and an easy laugh that belies all the hard work. Now she is ready to head on to Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., where she has a unique study plan.

“What I think I want to do is major in people,” she says.Hampshire encourages students to set up their own ma-

jors. She plans to take courses in sociology, psychology and even neuroscience in an effort to better understand her fel-low humans.

“I found my dream school,” she said. “They are educat-ing for change and preparing you for jobs that don’t even exist yet.” Strohm hopes to put her talents to work for so-cial justice and progressive causes.

She says she can’t separate herself from her physical ac-tivities. She’s captained both the cross-country and soccer teams at Half Moon Bay High School, and lately she’s been into yoga and kickboxing.

“Cross-country is basically pain and suffering, and when you go through that with teammates you create quite a bond,” she said. “But soccer is probably my favorite. I’m going to play at Hampshire. Exercise is so much a part of who I am.

She’s a standout student even though she sometimes questions authority.

“I love learning. I hate the tedious little work you get in classes, but I love the learning part,” she explained. “I’m not an equation person. I’ve always had trouble with math and sciences. I’m always, like, ‘Why? Where did that equa-tion come from?’”

She may wonder where that equation came from but she is secure in her own background. She grew up in La Honda and has always gone to school on the coast. It’s home.

“Can you get better than where we live?” she asked. “I defi nitely want to come back, but I want to experience oth-er places as well.”

Salutatorian strums his way to NashvilleEberhardt will study nursing, but he’s bringing guitar too

Lucas Eberhardt will always remember Pescadero High School as the place that gave him a chance and the place where he made the most of his opportuni-

ties.Pescadero High School encouraged his music and let

him play varsity sports even if he didn’t have much experi-ence. He took all his required courses before he got to his senior year, so school administrators encouraged him to enroll in Cañada College, where he took rigorous academic courses and fun stuff too.

“I took a salsa dancing class,” he said. “I thought, hey, I’m young. Might as well give it a try.”

Because he gave it a try and because he excelled along the way, Eberhardt will graduate as the Class of 2014 Sa-lutatorian. He is headed to Belmont University in Nash-ville, Tenn., next year. He plans to study nursing and get in some fun as well in a city known as a cradle of American music. He will defi nitely be bringing his guitar along with him.

“Music isn’t my major, but I talked to some students and they all said I would have the opportunity to play music,” he said. “I taught myself to play and I’m ready to play with other people,” he said. “I think that is where the magic re-ally happens.”

He says the importance of teamwork was instilled at Pescadero High School.

“I think it’s important to work as a team in any fi eld,” he said. “It’s good to have your own independent thought, but you kind of have to get over yourself and work together sometimes, whether it be your job or studies or whatever.

“I think that is one way Pescadero has really helped me,” Eberhardt said. “I grew up kind of isolated in Camp Jones Gulch. I’m an only child, so I know what it’s like to be by myself. I feel like being around others pushes me to be out of my comfort zone and to do things I didn’t know I was capable of doing. That is one of the things I’ve learned here at Pescadero.”

Duo earn honors as seniors at HMB

Micaela White had no idea what to expect when the sports season started this school year.

When it ended for her in February, the hon-ors were huge.

She was the offensive player of the year in water polo, first-team all-league in soccer, and played a major role in the Half Moon Bay High School soccer team securing its first-ever Pen-

insula Athletic League title. Her teammates included Kylie Freeburg

who earned second-team all-league status.Sandwiched around those accomplish-

ments are first-team all-league honors in cross-country and track and field.

The two girls share the honor of being named Half Moon Bay co-Female Athletes of the Year.

“Kylie is such a great athlete,” White said. “She’s everything. She does so admirable on and off the field. That’s a great honor to be paired with her.”

Freeburg expected to play sports at Half Moon Bay.

“I used to play basketball when I was in mid-dle school,” Freeburg said. “I wish I could play that (at Half Moon Bay). But soccer is my No. 1 sport.”

Winning the soccer title is preeminent among her high school memories. But in cross-country she was the member of teams that qualified for the state meet all four years.

There was something extra special in play-ing three sports all four years.

“I made a lot of friends from each sport that

I did,” Freeburg said. “Those are the friends that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”

White will attend UCLA. Aside from intra-murals, her sports career is over. Between be-ing MVP in one sport and playing on a cham-pionship team, it was the perfect way for her to end her career.

“If we didn’t have sports here at the high school I would not be playing water polo. I wouldn’t be the athlete that I am. Sports means everything to me …” White said. “I was so hap-py to be able to participate in sports and have that option.”

Athletes helped put HMB sports on map

Nuño all-state basketball player,

Marshall gets medal at state meet

It’s easy to overlook Half Moon Bay High School and its successful athletic program.

Enrico Nuño and Logan Marshall did their part to help put Half Moon Bay on the map.

After helping the Cougars go deeper in the California Interscholastic Fed-eration Regional Basketball Playoffs than any other Half Moon Bay team, Nuño was named to the Division IV All-State team. That was the final hon-or after being named to the all-Central Coast Section team and named Pen-

insula Athletic League North Division Player of the Year.

Marshall excelled in cross-country. After winning the league title and fin-ishing third at the CCS meet, Marshall finished 10th at the state meet, earning a medal. He’s the fifth Cougar to medal in the 27-year history of the state meet.

The two athletes share the honor as Half Moon Bay High School co-Male Athletes of the Year.

In the three years Nuño played for the Cougars, the Cougars qualified for the regional playoffs all three years. The Cougars are the third public school team from CCS to go to the state tour-nament.

About a month after the season end-ed came the announcement that Nuño was all-state.

“That meant a lot to me,” Nuño

said. “Once I saw who else was on it, I thought of myself as an elite player. That was a good group to be in.”

He came a long way from his fresh-man year, when he admits he wasn’t the best player on the team.

“I needed to work on a lot of things,” Nuño said. “All the coaches helped me to get where I am.”

Marshall’s dream was to play football, but his size didn’t allow him to play. Be-sides, cross-country is a fall sport too. He says it all turned out well for him.

The individual honors are nice and he will treasure them. But those aren’t even his top achievements. It was dur-ing his junior year that the Cougars qualified for the state meet.

“The joy on everyone’s faces was real-ly priceless,” Marshall said. “I will never forget that.”

Solid list of honorable mentions

League, section champions make the list

T his was probably one of the best years ever for Half Moon Bay High School sports.

Six varsity teams won league titles, with one, the boys soccer team, taking the section title.

There were plenty of standout athletes as well. It’s always a challenge to pick just one or two ath-

letes. There are some high quality athletes who did their part to make it a solid year.

Here are the best of the rest:BoysDerek Nazar, football and golf: Nazar was a

solid defensive back, returning an interception for a score in one game. He was steady on the golf team. He was all-league in both.

Corey Cilia, basketball: A three-year starter, Cilia was a smooth shooting guard. He helped Half Moon Bay win the Burlingame Tournament, sinking all 13 of his free attempts in the title game.

Brett Berghammer, baseball: A four-year all-league player, Berghammer developed a sweet swing, played a solid center field and was a solid pitcher.

Raul Hernandez, football and wrestling: All the hard work paid off, as he was a league wrestling champion this year.

GirlsAlix Lemke, soccer, volleyball: Lemke was a

key player for the Cougars, whether she was scoring goals for the soccer team or getting blocks for the vol-leyball team.

Natalie Strohm, cross-country, soccer: Strohm scored key goals for the soccer team and al-ways finished in the top five for the cross-country team.

Carmen Contreras, track and field, cross-country: She ran track just two years and did one year of cross-country. She qualified for the section meet all three times, helping the cross-country team advance to the state meet.

Harlee Donovan, softball: On a team filled with strong hitters, Donovan keyed Half Moon Bay. A solid catcher, too, Donovan was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Marcella Cordova, wrestling: A nice girl away from the mat, Cordova turns into a fierce competitor once a match starts. She won the Cougars’ first-ever section title in girls wrestling.

Negrete also played

baseballSenior stunned to be

Female Athlete of the Year

Of all the sports she plays at Pes-cadero High School, Itzel Negrete says volleyball is her favorite.

It means more to her than just playing the game with her friends.

The sport gives the Pescadero High School freshman a chance to bond with her father.

“It’s the fi rst sport we played together,” said Negrete.

In addition to volleyball, Negrete also played basketball, soccer and baseball for the Vikings.

Negrete is this year’s Pescadero High School Female Athlete of the Year.

Negrete admits she was surprised to re-ceive the honor. She admitted she believed there were others more worthy.

She thinks part of the reason for her get-ting the honor was her time on the base-ball team. That idea came from her English teacher, Jennifer Freeman.

Back in the day, Freeman was a stel-lar softball player. She also played baseball while growing up in San Mateo.

“She encouraged me to go out for base-ball,” Negrete said.

Negrete played all three outfi eld positions and shortstop. Naturally, there were some who were excited Negrete was playing base-ball and others who were not comfortable with that.

“My parents were OK with it, and that’s all that mattered,” she said.

Her goal for next year is a simple one.“I want to just try harder in sports,” she

said.

He uses sports to conquer

challengesKanehailua plays3 sports for Vikings

Since his freshman year, life is pretty much the same for Pescadero High School’s Zion Kanehailua.

Kanehailua has school in the morning, sports (either games or practice in the after-noon) and homework at night.

Depending on the day and the season, fi nishing the homework assignments could take him deep into the night.

That comes with the territory.“It’s hard during the basketball season,”

Kanehailua said. “We get home from bas-ketball games around 9 p.m. Some nights, I have 3-4 hours of homework to complete.”

It must have worked out, as he maintains a B average.

It has also worked out in the athletic ven-ue.

Kanehailua is the 2014 Pescadero High School Male Athlete of the Year.

The award didn’t entirely catch him off guard. But at the same time, he’s doesn’t play soccer, basketball or baseball for awards and accolades.

“They are icing on the cake,” he said. The basic joy he gets out of sports is that

he is out there exercising. More than just staying in shape, he sees sports as a chance to conquer challenges.

“Individually, you push yourself to keep on getting a little bit better,” he said. “Team-wise, it’s a chance to work with other peo-ple. You start to build a cohesiveness with team sports.”
