Graduating seniors, in both public and parochial schools, have had their Catholic faith formed by their high school educa- tion along with their family life and parish involve- ment. On Tuesday, May 13, Bishop McGuinness High School in Oklahoma City awarded degrees to 170 graduates. Led by valedictorian Alison Nguyen and salutatorian Francisco Figueroa, the seniors were awarded grants and scholarships in excess of 8.3 million dollars. Across town, 89 seniors graduated from Mount Saint Mary High School on May 23 with 100 percent of the class going onto a higher education program. This year’s valedicto- rian was Rachel Ngo and the salutatorians were Nicholas Davis and Andrew Hufne. For the rst time since 1964, Saint Mary’s Cath- olic School in Lawton, Okla., had a high school graduating class. Through a partnership with Archdiocese of Miami Virtual Catholic School, Brianna Garncarz and Conner Ruiz were able to complete their high school curriculum require- ments and graduate on May 21. Oklahoma’s only Catholic college, Saint Grego- ry’s University, also held their spring commence- ment ceremony. On Saturday, May 17, 198 degrees were distributed to one of Saint Gregory’s largest graduating classes. Many of this year’s graduates utilized the adult degree program Saint Gregory’s offers in Tulsa and Shawnee, Okla. Each of these schools aspires to form their students to be disciples for Christ after their graduation and into adulthood. Recently the Holy Father, Pope Francis, addressed this topic when speaking to Italian school children regarding the importance of formal education as young people grow in discipleship. “School is one of the educational environments where one grows by learning how to live and how to become grown-up, mature men and women,” said Pope Francis. “Following what St. Ignatius teaches us, the main element in school is learning to be magnanimous. It means having grand ideals and the desire to achieve great things in response to what God asks of us and, precisely because of this, doing everyday things – all our daily actions, commitments and meetings with people – well.” Administrators at both Catholic high schools in the archdiocese consider the faith to be the cor- nerstone of all that is taught in their halls. “The education at The Mount is such that the students are challenged to desire a deeper rela- tionship with Christ and see their roles in life as one disciple who has a calling to make the world a better place and to see their lives as a way that Christ can still teach the world through their own words and works,” said Talita DeNegri, principal at Mount Saint Mary’s. In addition to the students graduating from archdiocesan high schools, many Catholic high school seniors are celebrating graduations from local public high schools. To honor these stu- dents, most parishes in the archdiocese hold a special Mass to recognize all graduates from their congregation. The public high school graduates also indicate that their faith was formed by their education through parish-based religious educa- tion and youth programs, as well has having to of- ten defend their faith in the halls of their schools. “By going to a public school there was … incen- tive to learn about the faith because often I would have to defend the faith,” said Ashley Haan, a 2014 graduate of Putnam City West High School. “When people would ask me questions I had to be ready with answers because most people had been misinformed about the faith.” Haan credits her condence in sharing her faith to her involvement at Epiphany of Our Lord par- ish under the guidance of youth minister Tracy Osterman. “Being involved at Epiphany, especially through the youth group, has strengthened my faith tremendously,” continued Haan. “I have learned that I want to be involved in the church and stay involved in what has become such an important aspect of my life. At Epiphany, I have been able to build a rm foundation that will help carry me through my college years and beyond.” Sarah Cooper is a freelance writer for the Sooner Catholic. Archdiocese of Oklahoma City - Go Make Disciples

Parishes and schools commission high school, college graduates as disciples of Jesus

As the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City strives toward its vision to “go make disciples,” this May’s high school graduations serve as an example of young people entering the world to evangelize and renew their communities by doing everyday things with their faith in mind. Graduating seniors, in both public and parochial schools, have had their Catholic faith formed by their high school educa-tion along with their family life and parish involve-ment.

This year’s valedicto-rian was Rachel Ngo and the salutatorians were Nicholas Davis and Andrew Huffi ne.

For the fi rst time since 1964, Saint Mary’s Cath-olic School in Lawton, Okla., had a high school graduating class. Through a partnership with Archdiocese of Miami Virtual Catholic School, Brianna Garncarz and Conner Ruiz were able to complete their high school curriculum require-ments and graduate on May 21.

Oklahoma’s only Catholic college, Saint Grego-ry’s University, also held their spring commence-ment ceremony.

Ignatius

teaches us, the main element in school is learning

to be magnanimous. It means having grand ideals and the desire to achieve great things in response to what God asks of us and, precisely because of this, doing everyday things – all our daily actions, commitments and meetings with people – well.”

Administrators at both Catholic high schools in the archdiocese consider the faith to be the cor-nerstone of all that is taught in their halls.

“The education at The Mount is such that the students are challenged to desire a deeper rela-tionship with Christ and see their roles in life as one disciple who has a calling to make the world a better place and to see their lives as a way that Christ can still teach the world through their own words and works,” said Talita DeNegri, principal at Mount Saint Mary’s.

In addition to the students graduating from archdiocesan high schools, many Catholic high school seniors are celebrating graduations from local public high schools. To honor these stu-dents, most parishes in the archdiocese hold a special Mass to recognize all graduates from their

congregation. The public high school graduates also indicate that their faith was formed by their education through parish-based religious educa-tion and youth programs, as well has having to of-ten defend their faith in the halls of their schools.

“By going to a public school there was … incen-tive to learn about the faith because often I would have to defend the faith,” said Ashley Haan, a 2014 graduate of Putnam City West High School. “When people would ask me questions I had to be ready with answers because most people had been misinformed about the faith.”

Haan credits her confi dence in sharing her faith to her involvement at Epiphany of Our Lord par-ish under the guidance of youth minister Tracy Osterman.

“Being involved at Epiphany, especially through the youth group, has strengthened my faith tremendously,” continued Haan. “I have learned that I want to be involved in the church and stay involved in what has become such an important aspect of my life. At Epiphany, I have been able to build a fi rm foundation that will help carry me through my college years and beyond.”
