DoctorofPhilosophy(Ph.D.)inBioinformaticsCurriculumRequirements:AllstudentswhoenterthePh.D.programintheSpring2017semesterorlaterwillfollowthecurriculumdescribedbelow.StudentswhoenteredtheIOBprogrampriortotheSpring2017semesterwillhavetheoptiontograduateunderthecurriculuminplacewhentheyenteredtheprogram(seeAppendixE)ortransfertothenewcurriculumrequirements.However,studentsmustsatisfyallrequirementsofonecurriculumortheother.Notransferringfromnewtooldcurriculumormixingandmatchingofrequirementsfromtheoldandnewcurriculaisallowed.
StudentswhoenterthePh.D.programthroughtheIntegratedLifeSciences(ILS)programwilltaketheILSCoreCurriculumforthefirstsemester.Currently,thisonesemestercurriculumconsistsoflabrotations,aprofessionaldevelopmentclass,aresponsibleconductofresearchclass,ascientificliteraturereadingclassandadatamanagementclass(http://ils.uga.edu/admissions/curriculum/).UponselectionofBioinformaticsasamajorandenteringtheIOBPh.D.program,thestudentisrequiredtofollowthecurriculumdescribedbelow.Forasuggestedcourseschedule,seeAppendixA.

ProgramPrerequisitesItisassumedthatstudentsenteringtheprogramhavetakenintroductorycoursesinmoleculargenetics,biochemistry,calculus,andstatistics&probability.Itisalsoassumedthatthestudentsareabletoprograminsomeprogramminglanguage.Studentswholackinanyoftheseareasmusttakeappropriatecoursesintheirfirstyearintheprogram.Thesecoursesmaynotbecountedtowardsdegreerequirements.
RegistrationRequirementsStudentswillregisterfor18.0creditsinallsemesterstheyareenrolled,includingSummersemesters.ThisistoaccuratelyreflectthetimeandeffortBINFstudentsputintotheirresearch.Exceptionstothisrequirementaremadeonacasebycasebasis,andonlyinanticipationofthesemesterinwhichtherequirementwillnotbemet.RequeststoenrollforlessthantherequiredamountshouldbesubmittedtotheGraduateProgramAdministratorpriortoregistrationfortheeffectedsemester.Forspecificquestions,pleasecontacttheGraduateProgramAdministrator.

BINF8600(1.0):GrantWriting.Thecourseintroducestheprinciplesofsuccessfulgrantwritingandmanuscriptpreparation.StudentsareexpectedtodevelopandproduceagrantproposalintheNIHorNSFformat.

EHSC8460(L)(1.0-3.0):EnvironmentalGenomics.Coversthebackgroundanduseofnewhighthroughputgenomictoolsforenvironmentalstudies.Contentandcreditswillvarydependingonsubjectscovered,whicharemodifiedtomeettheneedsofenrolledstudents.
GeneralElectivesStudentsarerequiredtotakeoneelective,asdirectedbytheiradvisorycommittee.AnyselectionofelectivethatisapprovedbytheGraduateCoordinatorandthestudent’scommitteeareacceptable.However,studentswillnotbeallowedtocountprogramprerequisitesaselectivecourses.

AdvisoryCommitteeUponarrivalattheUniversity,studentswillmeetwiththeGraduateCoordinatorand/ortheGraduateProgramAdministratorforguidanceandmentoring.
Becausethisprogramisinterdisciplinary,studentswillbeadvisedtotakeprerequisitecoursesinareaswherethestudentdoesnothavethenecessarybackground.
StudentswillselecttheirmajorprofessorbytheendFallsemesteroftheirfirstyear.ThemajorprofessormustbeaFullorAdjunctFacultymemberoftheInstituteofBioinformatics,andamemberoftheGraduateFaculty.BytheendofSpringsemesterofthefirstyear,studentsmustestablishanadvisorycommittee.TheadvisorycommitteemustconsistofthemajorprofessorandatleastthreeotherUGAGraduateFacultymembers.AtleasttwomembersoftheadvisorycommitteemustbeFullorAdjunctFacultyoftheIOB.Theadvisorycommitteeshouldbecomposedofrepresentativesofboththebiologicalandthequantitativesciences.Atleastonememberoftheadvisorycommitteewillrepresentthestudent’sfocusedareaofstudye.g.computerscience,plantbiology,microbiology,etc.,fromoutsidetheinstitute.Thismemberofthecommitteewillprovideinputfromoutsidebioinformaticsandensurethattheprogramofstudyisconsistentwiththepracticesofthemostrelatedoutsidediscipline.
Theadvisorycommitteewillmeetwiththestudentsnolessthanonceayear.Theadvisorycommitteewillberesponsibleformentoringthestudent’sresearchandtraining,approvingthestudent’sprogramofstudy,administeringthewrittenandoralcomprehensiveexamination,approvingthesubjectforthedissertation,approvingthecompleteddissertation,andapprovingthestudent’sdefenseofhisorher

research.Studentswilltaketheircomprehensiveexaminationduringtheirsecondyear,supervisedbythemajorprofessor,undertheGraduateSchoolguidelines.Formoreinformation,seeAppendixB.

IOBComprehensiveExaminationThecomprehensiveexamwillbecomprisedofawrittenportionandanoralportion.Thewrittenportionwilltakeplacebeforetheoralportion.ThestudentshouldcontacttheGraduateProgramAdministratorwhentheyhavescheduledthewrittenportionoftheexam,whichwillconsistofawrittenproposaloftheirdissertationresearch,basedonNIHguidelines.Itisexpectedthatstudentsareabletoarticulatetherationalefortheirproposedresearchandbeabletoexplaintheirresearchstrategy.UGAGraduateSchoolrequirementsindicatethattheremaybeonlyonefailinggradefromthecommitteefortheexamtobeconsideredpassing.Thestudent’sadvisormayissueafailinggradeandthestudentmaystillpass.Uponreceivingapassinggradeonthewrittenportion,theproposalshouldbeforwardedtotheGraduateProgramAdministratortobeaddedtothestudent’sacademicfile.Additionally,thestudent’sadvisorshouldemailtheGraduateProgramAdministratorandGraduateCoordinator,reportingthestudent’spassinggrade.Ifthestudentfailsthewrittenportionoftheexam,theadvisorshouldemailtheGraduateCoordinatorandGraduateProgramAdministratorassoonaspossible,detailingtheoutcomeoftheexam.
Afterpassingthewrittenexam,thestudentshouldcontacttheGraduateProgramAdministratortobeginschedulingtheoralportionoftheexam.TheGraduateSchoolrequiresatleasttwoweeks’noticeoftheoralexam.TheGraduateProgramAdministratorwillworkwiththestudenttopreparetherequiredpaperworkforsubmissiontotheGraduateSchool.
Theoralexamwilllastatleasttwohours,butnotlongerthanthreehours.Thestudentwillprepareapresentationofnomorethan20slidesthatareintendedtoserveasaframeworkofthediscussionoftheproposedresearch.Thestudent’spresentationshouldlastforapproximately20-25minutes.Questionsduringtheexamwillconsistofbothgeneralandspecificknowledgerelatedtothestudent’sproposedresearchasdescribedintheirpresentationandwrittenproposal.Amemberofthestudent’scommittee,otherthantheadvisor,willserveaschairoftheexam.Theadvisorisnotallowedtoanswerquestionsforthestudent,andwillnotparticipateinthediscussionunlessgrantedpermissionbytheexamchair.UGAGraduateSchoolrequirementsindicatethattheremaybeonlyonefailinggradefromthecommitteefortheexamtobeconsideredpassing.Thestudent’sadvisormayissueafailinggradeandthestudentmaystillpass.
Studentswhofailtheircomprehensiveexam,eitherwrittenororalportion,maymakeasecondattemptattheexam.Ifthestudentfailsonthesecondattempt,thematterwillbeforwardedtotheGraduateAffairsCommitteeforreviewandrecommendations.Possibleoutcomesinclude,butarenotlimitedto,changeofdegreeobjectivefromPhDtomasterslevel,orstudentexitingtheprogramwithoutdegree.RecommendationsfromtheGraduateAffairsCommitteemaybeconsideredafterreviewingthesituationwiththestudent,thestudent’sadvisor,andgettingfeedbackfromthestudent’sadvisorycommittee.
Studentsareexpectedtocompletetheircomprehensiveexamsduringthespringsemesteroftheirsecondyear.Thetimingbetweensubmissionandgradingofthewrittenportionoftheexamandtheoralexamshouldbenomorethan4weeks.

DissertationPlanningAwrittenproposal,orprospectus,ispreparedaspartofthecomprehensiveexam.Thisproposalwilldetailthebreadthandscopeofresearchthestudentplanstoundertakeduringtheirdissertationresearch.Itisexpectedthatthecommitteewillprovideinputonthisproposalsothestudentcanfocusonaviabledissertationproject.However,itisexpectedthattheproposalwillbeentirelythestudent’sownwork.Itisimportanttonotethatthestudentisnotrequiredtohavedatapriortotakingtheircomprehensiveexams.
AdmissiontoCandidacyThestudentwillsubmitanApplicationforAdmissiontoCandidacyformalongwiththeReportoftheWrittenandOralComprehensiveExaminationform,indicatingtheyhavepassedthecomprehensiveexam.TheGraduateProgramAdministratorwillassistthestudentinthepreparationoftherequiredforms.TheApplicationforAdmissiontoCandidacyforDoctoralDegreesformmustbefiledwiththeGraduateSchoolatleastonesemesterbeforegraduation.Oncethestudenthasbeenadmittedtocandidacy,theymayregisterforDoctoralDissertation(BINF9300)credithours.
TheGraduateSchoolpreparestheReportofWrittenandOralComprehensiveExaminationformandsendsittotheGraduateProgramAdministrator.

CurriculumRequirementsBecauseofitsinterdisciplinarynature,thebioinformaticsM.S.degreeprogramadmitsstudentsfromdiversebackgroundsandleadstomultiplecareerpaths,dependinguponthebackgroundandinterestsofthestudents.Thus,thecurriculumisdesignedtoprovideflexibletrainingofadiversestudentbodywhilemaintainingtherigoroftheprogram.
AllstudentsarerequiredtotakeBINF8900L(Labrotation)intheirfirstsemesterintheprogram.Studentswhoentertheprogramcommittedtoalabshouldtakethiscourseinplaceofresearchcredits,butarenotrequiredtorotate.MasterstudentsarerequiredtotakeBINF8990(Colloquium)once.
