INTRODUCTIONAUSTRIAN CITY GRAZ IS DEVELOPING ITS IMAGE BASED ON AN ECOLOGIC AND SUS-TAINABLE APPROACH REGARDING THE NEW CITY PROJECTS. IN THE END OF 2011, THE CITY INVITED SEVERAL AUSTRIAN STUDIOS TO PARTICIPATE ON THIS COMPE-TITION. THE SITE LIES IN THE SOUTH CITY SUBURBS, CLOSE TO THE ST.MARTIN CASTLE. AN IMPORTANT BIOCORRIDOR RUNS NEXT TO THE SITE, DEFINING ONE OF CONDITIONS FOR THE NEW DESIGN. THE TASK WAS TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE HOUSING COMPLEX, PROVIDING A HIGH QUALITY LIVING AND FITTING INTO A COM-PLICATED URBAN SITUATION IN AN ENVIRONMENT WITHOUT ANY CHARACTERIS-TIC ARCHITECTURAL QUALITY. MORE OF A PARK THAN A CITY.

ZOOM 1xTHE PUBLIC PARK IS A CONTINUATION OF THE SURROUNDING WOODLAND AREA. THE MAIN PART IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND PUBLIC RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES. THE PARK IS OPEN TO BOTH RESIDENTS AND VISI-

ZOOM 2xTHE PARK FRAGMENTS BETWEEN SINGLE RESIDENTIAL UNITS SERVE APPROXIMATELY 300 RESIDENTS EACH. EVERY GROOVE HAS ITS OWN CHARACTER AND A LANDSCAPE DESIGN FOR A STRONGER IDENTITY.

ZOOM 3xTHE COURTYARDS BETWEEN THE HOUSES SERVE TO APPROXIMATELY 100 RESIDENTS. IT IS A SPACE FOR CHILDREN’S PLAY, AN OUT-DOOR CINEMA OR PRIVATE GARDENS.

ZOOM 4xTHE LOGGIAS PROVIDE A PRIVATE OUTDOOR SPACE FOR APARTMENT RESIDENTS. THEY ARE ACCESSED FROM LIVING ROOM, MAXI-MIZING CONNECTION WITH THE EXTERIOR.

GREEN WAVEPUBLIC, SEMI-PRIVATE AND PRIVATE AREAS ARE ON DIFFERENT HEIGHT LEVELS FOR THEIR BETTER DISTINCTION, HOWEVER ALWAYS UNIFIED BY VEGETATION.

PARKTHE PARK WORKS AS A STRUCTURE OF A CON-TINUOUS GREEN PUBLIC SPACE WITH SEMI-PRIVATE ISLANDS DEFINING INDIVIDUAL, CHARACTERISTIC GROOVES BETWEEN THEM.

CONCEPT

MODULARTHE BUILDINGS OFFER A GREAT VARIABILITY OF APARTMENTS THANKS TO A SMART MODULAR SYSTEM. A BASIC UNIT IS A SQUARE LIVING SPACE OF DIMENSIONS 6X6M. FOR A TWO ROOM APARTMENT A BEDROOM UNIT WITH A BATHROOM IS ADDED. FOR A THREE AND A FOUR ROOM APARTMENT, ANOTHER ONE OR TWO ADDITIONAL BED-ROOM UNITS ARE ADDED. A LIVING ROOM IS ALWAYS IN A CORNER POSITION, PROVIDING A HIGH QUALITY SPACE AND A CORNER WINDOW.

WATER USETHE AMOUNT OF USED WATER IS REDUCED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. RAIN-WATER IS COLLECTED FOR TOILET FLUSHING. GREYWATER IS BEING BIO-LOGICALLY FILTERED AND USED FOR THE PARK IRRIGATION.

MICROCLIMATETHE COURTYARD IS PROTECTED AGAINST THE WIND BY THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS, CREATING A SPECIAL MICROCLIMATE. IN THE SUMMER, TREES INSIDE THE COURT PROVIDE SHADE AND COOLNESS. THE FRESH AIR OF THE SURROUNDING GREEN AREA IS BEING CHANNELED TO THE APARTMENTS.

status_vernissage at přerov year_2012 INTRODUCTIONAS A CONTINUATION OF THE PREDIPLOMA STRATEGY FOR THE NEW PŘEROV CITY LIBRARY, THE NEXT STEP WAS TO DESIGN THE LIBRARY ITSELF. DURING ONE SE-MESTER, THE GOAL WAS TO PREPARE A PROJECT FOR A NEW CITY LIBRARY. THE SITE ON A VERY EDGE OF THE OLD CITY CENTER AND RIVERBANK SEEMED PERFECT, CREATING AN OPPORTUNITY TO INTRODUCE THE LIBRARY INTO THE CITIZENS EVE-RYDAY LIFE. IN SHORT, THE QUESTION TO ANSWER WAS A ROLE OF A LIBRARY IN THE DIGITAL AGE AND THE EFFORT TO REACH THE PHENOMENON OF AN ALMOST MAGICAL ATMOSPHERE OF ANCIENT LIBRARIES.

L I B R A R Y R O L EA 21ST CENTURY CITY LIBRARY SHOULD NOT EXPECT CONSTANT AND GROWING READER CLIENTELE. ON THE CONTRARY, THERE IS A GROWING AMOUNT OF INFOR-MATION AND OTHER ACTIVITIES COMPETING WITH THE LIBRARY’S ORIGINAL FUNCTION. A NEW LIBRARY SHOULD PROPOSE SOME ADDITIONAL VALUE. IT SHOULD BE A CULTURAL PLATFORM, PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL AND ATTRACTIVE ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS. THEREFORE IT IS IMPORTANT, THAT THE LIBRARY BUILDING IS ABLE TO HOST AND ORGANIZE SUCH EVENTS NOT ONLY THROUGH ITS CONCEPTION, BUT ALSO THROUGH A REAL APPROACH OF STAFF AND MANAGEMENT.

AS A

N E W P L A T F O R MA SPACE, WHICH’S WORKING DOESN’T DIRECTLY RELY ON THE LIBRARY FUNCTIONING. IT WILL BE HOSTING OCCASIONAL EXHIBITIONS, LECTURES, MOVIE PROJEC-TIONS, CAFE OR ANY OTHER CULTURAL EVENT. THE LIBRARY WILL THUS EXPAND THE SPECTRUM OF CLIENTS WITHTHOSE WHO WOULD OTHERWISE NOT BE ADRESSED BY THE LIBRARY AT ALL.

T O W NPREROV IS A SMALL SIZED CITY IN CZECH REPUBLIC. THE PROJECTS AIM IS TO HOUSE AN EXISTING INSTITUTION AND TRANSFORM IT INTO A 21ST CENTURY ORGANI-SATION. THE TOWN, WITHOUT REALISING A POTENTIAL OF ITS RIVERFRONT IS IGNORING VALUABLE LOTS IN DIRECT PROXIMITY OF THE CITY CENTER, WHICH, WHEN PROPERLY USED COULD REPRESENT A REAL SPIN OFF AREAS FOR FUTURE CITY DEVELOPLMENT. A MODERN INSTITUTION WITH STRONG IDENTITY AND RIVERFRONT ACTIVISATION - THESE ARE THE THEMES OF THE LIBRARY.WITH SUBTLE WORK WITH IMPORTANT VISTAS FOR THE PŘEROV CITY AS THE RIVERFRONT, THE CASTLE TOWER, SOKOLOVNA OR THE TYRŠ BRIDGE IS CREATED A LIBRARY, PRECIEVED BY PŘEROV CITIZENS AS A PART OF THE CITY IDENTITY. ...THE LIBRARY IS CONNECTED WITH THE CITY ON SEVERAL LEVELS. IN MINDS OF THEIR READERS, IN PROGRAMS THE BUILDING IS HOSTING, AS A PART OF THE CITY URBAN FABRIC...

A T M O S P H E R EAMAZING PHENOMENON RELATED WITH THE BOOK ARE THE SPACES REIGNED BY IT. THESE PLACES HAVE THEIR OWN, INCOMMUTABLE, ALMOST MAGICAL ATMOS-PHERE, WHICH ATTRACTS INTEREST ON ITS OWN. THIS FEELING IS MOST OFTEN PRESENT WHILE VISITING AN OLD BOOKSTORE OR A LIBRARY, WHERE THE BOOKS INTENSIVELY EFFECT ON US WITH THEIR INDESCRIBABLE WEIGHT. IS IT THE SCENT OF OLD PAPER AND LEATHER? OUR IMAGINATION PROJECTING ALL THE STORIES THEY REPRESENT?THEIR PLASTICITY? EITHER WAY, THIS ASPECT WE FEEL WHILE SURROUNDED IS EXTREMELY STRONG AND WORTH CONSIDERING EVEN TODAY WHILE THINKING A NEW LIBRARY.

INTRODUCTIONIN THE PRESENT, THE PŘEROV CITY LIBRARY FUNCTIONING IS VERY LIMITED DUE TO INSUFFICIENT SPATIAL CAPABILITIES OF ITS ACTUAL HOSTING BUILDING. A HIS-TORICAL VILLA, WHERE THE LIBRARY EXISTS AT THE MOMENT WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE A PUBLIC BUILDING AND SEVERAL OTHER LIBRARY BRANCHES ARE SCAT-TERED ALL OVER THE CITY. THE LIBRARY MANAGEMENT THUS BEGINS TO LOOK FOR A SUITABLE PLOT FOR A NEW BUILDING. OUR TEAM, AS A PART OF A PREDI-PLOMA PROJECT AND BEFORE THE DESIGN OF THE ACTUAL LIBRARY BUILDING SET A GOAL TO RECONSIDER THE POTENTIAL SITES, FIND NEW ONES, ANALYZE THEM AND THEN COME WITH A STRATEGY FOR A NEW PŘEROV CITY LIBRARY. THIS PORTFOLIO PRESENTS JUST A GENERAL CONCEPT AND EXAMPLES OF PARTICU-LAR ANALYTIC WORKS.

CENTER SIZE

SIZE OF THE PŘEROV HISTORIC CITY CENTER IS NOT UNUSUAL OR BIGGER IN COMPARISON WITH THE NEIGHBORING CITIES. ITS MORE LIKELY SMALLER, AND THIS MIGHT BE SURPRISING. GENERALLY WE COULD SAY, THE BIGGER THE CITY WITH REGARD ON IT’S EXTENT AND NUMBER OF HABITANTS, THE SMALLER AND MORE COMPACT THE HISTORIC CENTRE IN THE PROPORTION WITH THE WHOLE CITY. IN MOST OF THE STUDY CASES THIS PREDICATES THEIR DEVELOPMENT AND HISTORY.

IN PŘEROV, WE COULD QUESTION UNBALANCED UTILIZATION RATIO OF HISTORICAL ZONE, WHICH HAS CURRENTLY A ROLE OF A REPRESENTATIVE AND HOUSING DISTRICT. ANOTHER FACT IS, THAT THE CENTRAL PART OF THE CITY, WITH AN EXCEPTION OF THE UPPER SQUARE, DOES NOT HAVE AN EXTREMELY HIGH HISTORICAL VALUE COMPARED TO OTHER NEIGHBORING CITIES.

IN ALMOST EVERY CASE STUDY, LIBRARIES ARE POSITIONED IN THE CITY CENTER OR ITS BOUNDARIES. WE COULD ALSO CONSIDERED A POSITION OUTSIDE THE CENTER, CLOSER TO CITY CENTER OF GRAVITY IN TERMS OF IT’S POPULATION DENSITY, OR DUE TO THE TOPOGRAPHY AND A GOOD NET OF BIKE LANES.

INTRODUCTIONASSIGNEMNT OF THE COMPETITION WAS TO DESIGN A FOLLY FOR A SCULPTURE PARK IN QUEENS, NY. BUT WHAT SHOULD A FOLLY BE ALIKE IN A CONTEXT OF NUMEROUS ART OBJECTS WITHIN THE PARK? SHOULD WE DEFINE AN OBJECT, WHICH WOULD CLEARLY STATE THAT ITS ESSENCE IS ARCHITECTURAL AND NOT SCULPTURAL? HOW TO DO SO? MAYBE WE COULD CONSIDER THE SCULPTURE IN ITS CLASSIC SENSE AS AN OBJECT EXPLORED FROM THE OUTSIDE WHILE THE ARCHITECTURE’S BASIC PURPOSE IS TO PROVIDE A SPACE, A QUALITY WHICH IS EXPLORED FROM THE INSIDE. AND THEN WHERE SCULPTURE IS PASSIVE, ARCHI-TECTURE SHOULD BE ACTIVE... THE PROJECT STUDIES THE BOUNDARIES AND RE-LATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SCULPTURE AND ARCHITECTURE. THE MAIN THEME OF THIS STRUCTURE IS A DESTRUCTION OF THE OBVIOUS BORDER BETWEEN A VISIBLE MATERIAL (GEOMETRY) AND INVISIBLE IMMATERIAL ENTI-TIES (EVENTS IN PAVILION) AND THE VISUALIZATION OF THE INTERCHANGEABLE AND INTERACTIVE RELATIONS OF THESE TWO. THE CLUSTER CANNOT TAKE A FORM BY ITSELF, IT EXISTS AS A BALANCE BETWEEN TWO INVISIBLE FORCES (GRAVITY AND ELASTICITY). THE ACTIVITIES UNDER THE CLUSTER BREAK THE BALANCED STATE, THE CLUSTER EXISTING ON THE BORDER OF GRAVITY AND ELASTICITY VISUALIZES CHANGES OF THESE FORCES IMMEDIATELY DUE TO ITS AMBITIOUSNESS.

THE CLUSTER IS A LIGHTWEIGHT STRUCTURE HOVERING ABOVE THE GROUND ATTACHED TO AN OUTER TIMBER FRAME WITH AN ELASTIC RUBBER BAND. THANKS TO ITS PROPER-TIES, BAMBOO SEEMS AS A PERFECT MATERIAL FOR THE STRUCTURE. BAMBOO WILL TEMPORARILY LOOSE PORTION OF ITS TENSILE STRENGTH BECAUSE OF THE DRILLED HOLE. TO PREVENT THIS, THE BAMBOO ROD IS ENGIRDLED WITH AN ADJUSTABLE METAL STRAPS FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE DRILL. STEEL CABLE ATTACHED TO A BOLT SET IN THE PUNCTURE IS ATTACHED TO A STEEL LINK ON THE OTHER SIDE AND THUS GRANTING A CONNECTION WITH ADJACENT ELEMENT.

INTRODUCTIONTRIANGLE WAISTSHIRT COMPANY FIRE WAS ONE OF THE CRUCIAL MOMENTS FOR THE FORMATION OF INTERNATIONAL LABOR UNIONS MOVEMENTS AND CHANGE IN THE WAY WORKERS WERE TREATED AND PERCIEVED AT THE TIME. THIS COMPETI-TION AIMED FOR A DESIGN OF A MEMORIAL REMINDING THIS TRAGIC EVENT. THE BRIEF ASKED FOR A VERTICAL MEMORIAL, ENGAGING THE EXISTING BUILDING AND PROPOSING ITS FACADE AS PLOT. THE “PLOT” THEREFORE WAS VERY LIMITED AND FELT RATHER AS A CANVAS, THEN AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ARCHITECTURE. WE DE-CIDED TO WORK WITH A FRACTION OF THE PROPOSED CANVAS AND DESIGN ANIN-TIMATE EXTENSION OF THE BUILDING. OUR GOAL WAS TO OFFER AN INTERACTION WITH PASSERS BY BOTH PHYSICAL AND INTELECTUAL RATHER THEN CREATING A MURAL LIKE OBJECT ATTACHED TO THE FACADE.

INDIVIDUALS DO NOT IGNORE BUT PROTECT THEIR FELLOW HUMAN. IN THIS UTOPIA, FIRE TRIANGLE DOES NOT HAPPEN.IMAGINE MARCH 25TH 1911, ANOTHER DAY OF OUR EVERYDAY LIVING, WHERE TRIANGLE FIRE WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPEN. NOT IN NEW YORK, NOR ANYWHERE ELSE. MEMORIAL NARRATES THE HISTORY OF THE TRAG-IC EVENT. A SERIE OF PATINA METAL LOOPS RUNS ALONG THE BUILDING’S FACADE. THIS LOWER HORI-ZONTAL PART OF THE MEMORIAL, MEANT FOR SEAT-ING REPRESENTS THE EXISTING, YET OVERLOOKED ABUSE OF WORKERS IN THE TRIANLGE COMPANY. TWO LINEAR WINGS MEET IN THE MIDDLE, ON COR-NER OF THE BUILDING. THE SAME PATINA METAL LOOPS, BUT NOW WITH DIFFERENT AND DRAMAT-IC PROPORTIONS ARE HERE. THE TRAGEDY GIVES THE PREVIOUSLY EASILY OVERLOOKED ELEMENTS AN IMPRESSIVE ACCENT. HERE, SOME OF THE PAN-ELS ARE MISSING, REVEALING THE INSIDE OF EACH LOOP. MIRRORS FRAMED BY THE PATINA METAL AM-PLIFY THE ABSENCE OF MISSING LINKS. THE VOID BETWEEN PANELS RESONATES BEHIND THE MIR-ROR SURFACE, RELEASING THE VICTIMS NAMES IMPRINTED ON THE MIRROR INTO INFINITY. IT IS THEIR ABSENCE WHAT BROUGHT THE SIGNIFICANT CHANGE. WITHOUT THE TRAGEDY, THERE WOULD NOT BE ANY LINKS MISSING OR TRANSFORMED.

THE PROPOSAL OF THIS TRIANGLE FIRE MEMORIAL FOCUSES ON THE CHANGE AND IMPROVEMENT THAT CAME WITH THE LOSS OF THE 146 WORKERS. THIS IS TRANSLATED IN A SERIES OF CLOSED LOOPS MADE OUT OF PATINA METAL. THE MATERIALITY OF THE METAL COMMUNICATES A SENSE OF “ABUSE”. THIS PROPOSAL RESPECTS THE BUILDING AND IS CHORE-OGRAPHED IN A WAY TO ENGAGE THE VIEWERS. IT IS INVITING PEOPLE PASSING BY OR VISITORS TO SEAT ALONG THE SIDES OF THE FAÇADE. THE CORNER OF THE BUILDING IS COVERED WITH VERTICAL PANELS, WHICH GO UP TO THE SECOND FLOOR. THE PANELS HAVE A PATINA METAL FRAME AND ARE FILLED IN MIRRORS WITH THE NAMES OF THE 146 VICTIMS IM-PRINTED ON THEM. VIEWERS ARE ABLE TO BROWSE THROUGH THE PANELS WHICH ARE REFLECTING WITH EACH OTHER CREATING A SENSE OF INFINITY. THE CONTRAST OF THE DARK, SOLID MATERIALITY OF METAL AND THE SHINY, REFLECTIVE MATERIAL-ITY OF MIRROR ENHANCE THE CHANGE THAT CAME WITH THE ABSENCE OF THE TRIANGLE FIRE VICTIMS.

INTRODUCTIONA FEW KILOMETERS SOUTH OF BRATISLAVA, A PRIVATE COMPANY PLANS A NEW EXTENSIVE PROJECT, EXTENDING A FORMER VILLAGE OF ČUNOVO INTO A NEW TOWN ON 220HA AREA. AN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION, WITH A MASTERPLAN BY PROFESSOR DIETMAR EBERLE, WAS HELD. THE TWO ROUND COMPETITION FOR A NEW MASTERPLAN, A VILLA HOUSE AND A WEEKEND HOUSE TESTED VARI-OUS APPROACHES FOR SUCH A BIG SCALE PROJECT. THE SITE IS SPECIFIC FOR THE PRESENCE OF THE DANUBE RIVER AND A FLOODPLAIN FOREST DEFINING A UNIQUE CHARACTER OF THIS PLACE. THE WHOLE COMPLEX SHOULD PROVIDE A PARK ATMOSPHERE WITH A PRESENCE OF THE RIVER AND SPECIFIC COUNTRYSIDE ON EVERY STEP.

PLOTALL SINGLE PLOTS ARE DIVIDED BY A LOW STONE WALL REPRESENTING THE TRADITIONAL WAY OF PRIVATE LAND BOUNDARIES. THIS DELICATE PARTITION TOGETHER WITH THE VEG-ETATION CREATES AN IMPRESSION OF A CONTINUOUS GARDEN.

STRUCTUREEACH PLOT IS DIVIDED BY CONTINU-OUS HAIR LIKE STRUCTURE DEFIN-ING THE SINGLE FLOWERBEDS, EACH WITH DIFFERENT SPECIES. THE RESULT IS A RICH, NATURAL LIKE VARIETY OF VEGETATION OF DIFFER-ENT HEIGHTS, TEXTURES AND COLORS.

SPECIESTHE MAIN GOAL IS TO MIMIC A FLOODPLAIN FOREST CHARACTER. ON THE MOST FREQUENTED AREAS OF THE GARDEN, THE VEGETATION IS COMPLEMENTED WITH EFFECTIVE OR MORE DOMESTIC SPECIES TO PROVIDE COMFORT FOR THE RESI-DENTS.

POSITIONTHE SPECIES HAVE BEEN CHOSEN ACCORDING TO THEIR POSITION AND RELATION TO WATER. THREE CHAR-ACTERISTIC TYPES ARE PRESENT. THE WATER PLANTS WITH DIRECT CONTACT WITH WATER, THE WET-LAND PLANTS IN TRANSITION AREA AND THE WOODLAND SPECIES.

INTRODUCTIONALFONS MUCHA, A FAMOUS CZECH SECESSION ARTIST CREATED AN OIL PAINT CY-CLE CALLED THE SLAV EPIC. THIS CYCLE CONTAINS 20 PAINTINGS, THE BIGGESTS OF THEM OF SIZE 8,1 X 6,2 METERS. THE ARTIST GAVE THEM TO PRAGUE AS A GIFT UNDER ONE CONDITION - THE CITY HAS TO PROVIDE A PROPER EXHIBITION SPACE FOR THEM. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS CONDITION IS NOT FULFILLED EVEN BY THIS DAY. THE GOAL OF THIS PRESTIGIOUS STUDENT COMPETITION WAS TO DESIGN AN EXHIBITION SPACE FOR THE SLAV EPIC CYCLE ON ONE OF THREE POSSIBLE CON-STRUCTION PLOTS. WE CHOSE AN EXISTING STONE PEDESTAL STRUCTURE OF AN OLD MONUMENT IN PRAGUE’S BIGGEST PARK LETNÁ. THE MAIN VOLUME OF THE EXHIBITION SPACE IS BURIED UNDERGROUND. THEREFORE, THE NEW GALLERY DOES NOT CHANGE THE EXISTING PRAGUE PANORAMA. THE ONLY PROOF OF ITS PRESENCE IS A DECENT WHITE TOWER, TIPPING OUT FROM THE PARK, PROVIDING A VIEW OVER ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SLAV CITIES - PRAGUE.

VISUAL AXISTHE SLAVIC PAVILION IS IN THE END OF A VISUAL AXIS ALONG THE PAŘÍŽSKÁ STREET FROM THE OLD TOWN SQUARE. THE BUILD-ING IS NOT A NEW MONUMENT. THE MAIN VOLUME IS UNDERGROUND AND RESPECTS THE PANORAMA OF LETNÁ PARK.

EXHIBITIONTHE EXHIBITION ROUTE GUIDES VISITORS THROUGH THE MUSEUM AROUND ALL THE TWENTY CANVASES OF THE SLAV EPIC. THE CLIMAX MOMENT IS THE RECOGNITION OF SLAVIC NATION FROM THE VIEW TOWER, REPRESENTED BY PRAGUE.

TOURIST CIRCUITTHE PAVILION COMPLETES A TOURISTIC ROUTE THROUGH PRAGUE WITH OTHER HISTORICAL MONUMENTS. VISIT TO PRAGUE IS ENRICHED BY EXPERIENCE OF THE SLAV EPIC AND ALSO UNREPEATABLE VIEW OF PRAGUE’S OLD TOWN.

LIGHTINGIN THE SUMMER, SHADING EQUALLY DIF-FUSES SUNSHINE INTO THE INNER SPACE. IN GOOD LIGHTING CONDITIONS, A DIFFUS-ING WALL CAN BE OPENED IN ORDER TO CONNECT THE INTERIOR WITH THE EXTE-RIOR ATRIUM. IN THE WINTER, THE SUN IS LOWER AND A SMALLER PORTION OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT GOES INSIDE THE GAL-LERY. THE REST OF IT IS REFLECTED AND GETS DISPERSED BY SHADING.

THE TOWN HAS A COMPACT HISTORICAL CORE WITH TWO MAIN PUBLIC SQUARES. THE NEWER ONE, MASARYK SQUARE IS A PLACE WITH POTENTIAL TO CREATE A NEW AND NEEDED MAGISTRATE AND A CITY HALL ON A PLACE WITH A STRONG HISTORICAL CONTEXT AND A UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE. AN IMPORTANT FEATURE OF THE PLOT IS A PRESENCE OF A HISTORICALLY VALUABLE BUILDING, WHICH HAS TO BE PRESERVED. ALSO, WITH THE NEW ADMINISTRATION COMPLEX, THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE SQUARE WOULD BE RESERVED ONLY FOR AUTHORI-TIES. THEREFORE, ALONG WITH THE ORIGINAL BUILDING PROGRAM, A NEW FUNC-TION FUELING URBAN LIFE ON THE SQUARE IS IMPLEMENTED.

DEFINITIONTHE PRESENCE OF A HISTORICALLY VALU-ABLE BUILDING DEFINES THE GENERAL CONCEPT IDEA. IN THE CONTEXT WITH THE MODERN ADMINISTRATION COMPLEX, A TOWNHALL PROGRAM, PLANTED INTO AN ANCIENT BUILDING IS UNIQUE.

FUNCTIONINGTHE MAGISTRATE BUILDING DESIGN IS BASED ON FUNCTIONING OF THE WHOLE COMPLEX. THE MOST FREQUENTED OFFICES ARE THE MOST EASY TO ACCESS WHILE THE SELF SUFFICIENT OFFICES ARE ON THE TOPMOST FLOORS.

INNER SPACETHREE DIFFERENT INNER LOBBIES/PATIOS WERE DESIGNED - A CENTRAL LOBBY USED AS A MASTER WAITING SPACE WITH A CAFE, GREEN AN INACCESSIBLE PATIO PROVID-ING LIGHTING INTO THE OFFICES AND A SECONDARY WAITING ROOM.

INTRODUCTIONPILSEN IS THE FOURTH BIGGEST CZECH CITY WITH 170 000 HABITANTS. DURING THE WORLD WAR TWO, PILSEN WAS ONE OF CZECH CITIES LIBERATED BY THE U.S. ARMY, UNLIKE THE REST OF THE COUNTRY, FREED BY THE SOVIET UNION. THE PILSEN PHILHARMONIC BASED ON 1946 HAS A LONG TRADITION AND A GOOD NAME EVEN OUTSIDE THE CZECH BORDER, BUT WITHOUT A PROPER CONCERT HALL. THIS WAS THE TASK OF A STUDENT COMPETITION WE PARTICIPATED ON. THE DESIGNATED SITE FOR THE NEW PHILHARMONIC HALL WAS CHOSEN NEXT TO AN ELEGANT, FUNCTIONALIST CZECH RADIO BUILDING. THE NEW PHILHAR-MONIC HALL WAS MEANT TO BE CONNECTED WITH THIS BUILDING, WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY PLANNED TO BE EXTENDED IN THE FEATURE BY ANOTHER WING. WE DECIDED TO RELOCATE THE NEW BUILDING AND FIND A NEW PLOT, WHICH WOULD SUIT BETTER FOR A BUILDING SUCH AS A CONCERT HALL.

CONCERT HALLTHE NEW CONCERT HALL WOULD BE PRI-MARILY SERVING AS INTENDED TO ITS ORIGINAL FUNCTION AND WOULD BE OPENED AT MOST SEVERAL TIMES PER WEEK. FOR THE REST OF THE TIME, THE PLACE WOULD BE VISITED JUST SPORADI-CALLY, BECAUSE THE BUILDING IS NOT PROVIDING ANY OTHER SUPPORTING PRO-

MERGEMERGING TOGETHER BOTH THE MONU-MENT AND THE CONCERT HALL WOULD CREATE A NEW SYMBOL FOR THE CITY AND THE PEOPLE. THIS PARTNERSHIP ALLOWS THE CONCERT HALL TO EXPAND WITH NU-MEROUS NEW EVENTS AND PROVIDE A DECENT PLACE TO CELEBRATE NOT ONLY MUSIC, BUT THE MEMORIES OF THE PAST AS WELL.

year_2011INTRODUCTIONTHE DESIGN CREATES A MODULAR, WHICH WILL INCLUDE BASIC BATHROOM EQUIP-MENT SUCH AS A CLOSET, A SINK, A SHOWER AND A WATER BOILER. THE BOXES ARE SPINNED AROUND AN AXIS AND BY TILTING THEM THE USER GETS THE REQUIRED EQUIPMENT. THE STRUCTURE IS A FRAME SKELETON WITH FASTENED SKIN. THIS SOLUTION ALLOWS VARIABILITY IN CASING MATERIALS FROM PLASTICS, SHEET METAL TO THIN CONCRETE PANELS. FIXTURES MATERIALS ARE CHOSEN ACCORD-INGLY TO THE CASING MATERIAL - FOR EXAMPLE STAINLESS STEEL OR CERAMICS.

iTHE MAXIMALLY OPENED POSITION. EVERY COMPO-NENT IS READY TO USE. THE ELEMENTS ARE INSERTED IN THE BOXES. THOSE BOXES ARE CARRIED BY A STEEL AXIS WHICH HOSTS THE PLUMBING AT THE SAME TIME. COLD WATER IS BROUGHT TO THE HEATING MODULE AND DISTRIBUTED FURTHER TO THE SINK AND THE SHOWER.

iiTHE COMPLETELY CLOSED POSITION. WHEN THE BATH-ROOM POD IS NOT IN USE, IT HAS A FIGURE OF A COM-PACT BLOCK. THE HIGH-LIGHTED PART IS A STORAGE SPACE AND A WATER HEAT-ING.

iiiA POSITION FOR USE OF THE CLOSET. THE PART WITH THE SINK, THE WATER HEATING AND THE SHOWER IS TURNED AWAY. THE MODULE PART WITH THE CLOSET IS THE ONLY ONE FASTENED TO THE FLOOR AND NOT SPIN-NABLE. THE TANK FOR FLUSHING IS IN FREE SPACE AT THE SINK PART PROVID-ING NATURAL RUN FOR WATER.

ivTHE SINK - READY POSITION. TURNED AWAY IS THE PART WITH THE WATER TANK AND THE SHOWER. THE TAP IS EJECTED AUTOMATICALLY WITH AN ARM SLIDING ON AN INCLINED ELLIPTIC RABBET THE MODULE’S CARRYING STEEL AXIS.

vFOR THE SHOWER, THE TOP-MOST PART OF THE MODULE IS TURNED AWAY. WATER INFLOW IS FROM THE PART WITH THE TANK BELOW. THE SHOWER CONTROL IS IN THE LOWER PART OF THE SHOWER HEAD. THE WATER FLOW OFF IS SOLVED BY SLIGHT ELEVATION OF THE BATHROOM PAD ABOVE THE FLOOR LEVEL AND FAG END UNDER IT.

INTRODUCTIONAN INVITED COMPETITION FOR A NEW HOUSING COMPLEX IN LINZ, WHERE SEV-ERAL RENOWNED ARCHITECTURAL STUDIOS WITH DELUGAN MEISSL AND BKK-3 WERE INVITED. THE ASSIGNMENT WAS TO CREATE AN APARTMENT BUILDING WHICH IS A PART OF A LARGER HOUSING PROJECT, WITH A CENTRAL PARK IN THE MIDDLE. THE SITE IS CURRENTLY AN UNUSED INDUSTRIAL ZONE NEXT TO A RAIL-ROAD. PRESENCE OF THIS NOISY RAILROAD AND DIFFICULT SUNLIGHT CONDITIONS ARE DEFINING OUR APPROACH.

MASTERPLANTHE EXISTING MASTER PLAN HAS THREE CRITI-CAL WEAKNESSES. TWO CORNERS RESULT IN A LOW INTERIOR QUALITY OF THE APARTMENTS, THE SHAPE OF THE STRUCTURE LIMITS VIEWS AND SUN AND A RESULTING PARK FRACTION IS NOT CONNECTED TO THE GREEN CENTER.

PARKTHE PARK IS BEING EXTENDED TO THE NORTH. VARIOUS PATHS THROUGH THE SITE ARE POSSI-BLE. OUR SOLUTION GRANTS BETTER CONNEC-TION OF PASSAGES.

LIGHTINGDESIGNING A SINGLE BUILDING IN THE PARK GRANTS THE WHOLE STRUCTURE VIEWS AND SUN. BETWEEN OUR BUILDINGS, THERE IS NO MUTUAL SHADING. THE LOW PROFILE ALLOWS VIEWS TO THE GREEN CENTER.

ORIENTATIONTHE STRUCTURE PROVIDES VARIOUS VISUAL LINKS TO THE PARK. THE APARTMENTS ARE ATTACHED TO A VERTICAL COMMUNICATION, FACING SOUTH, EAST AND WEST.

COMPACTIN TOTAL, THERE ARE TWO VERY COMPACT BUILDINGS OF 62 APARTMENTS IN THE LARGE ONE AND 32 IN THE SMALL ONE. NEEDING JUST A FEW LIFTS AND WITH GOOD ENERGY BAL-ANCE.

TYPOLOGYTHE AIM IS A TYPOLOGY FOR A TERRACED HOUSE WITH COMFORTABLE FLATS. MIRRORING THE FLATS IN DIFFERENT LEVELS ALLOWS DOUBLE CEILING HEIGHTS FOR INDIVIDUAL PLANTING ON BALCONIES.

SHAPINGEVERY TWO FLOORS, THE FLATS SLIDE A LITTLE BIT FURTHER FROM THE PARK. THIS SHAPING PROVIDES A BETTER INSOLATION FOR THE APARTMENTS, MORE SPACE FOR THE BALCO-NIES AND NATURAL IRRIGATION FOR THE HANGED GARDENS.

GARDENSTHE CANTILEVERED BALCONY SLABS PROVIDE ADDITIONAL OPEN SPACE. BIGGER SIZE PLANTS CAN BE PLACED ON THE BALCONY BY IMBED-DING THEM INTO THE SLAB. THE NATURAL, CONNECTED, IRRIGATION SYSTEM IS ESSENTIAL AND NECESSARY.
