REVISION QUESTION PAPER Time: 2Hrs. ENGLISH Marks:100

SECTION A (30 marks)

1. Read the passage and answer the questions that follow: 12marks

1. Fashion loves to embrace the new and is always quick to adapt to socio-culture developments. There is no question that this industry has welcomed the social network. The way we look at fashion has totally changed, thanks to Facebook, Twitter, Blackberry Messenger (BBM) and Instagram. And the way we report fashion has changed too. Fashion shows are streamed live, reviews on blogs are up minutes after a show, and online e-commerce stores make collections

available minutes after a fashion show has ended. You can buy an outfit even before the next day's newspaper review is out. Twitter, of course, means that even the fashion reportage a paper carries is outdated. Today every fashion writer needs to learn the art of reviewing a show in 140 characters. Knowing your social media is as important as knowing your fashion. The fashion

brands, retailers and magazines are well aware of this- and therefore they are all social media-friendly.

2. And often enough, social media will be more willing to push the envelope than traditional media. Recently, a leading fashion magazine made a fashion faux pas - the outfit they had put on their cover had appeared on another fashion magazine a year earlier, and as we all know

repeating in fashion is a big no-no. Interestingly, most of the dailies decided to overlook the incident. Bloggers were not so forgiving and brought the error into the public arena. And it started a much-needed debate on the responsibility of fashion media.

3. Even when you look at electronic media, you will notice that unless it is a 'makeover show', most television channels shy away from showcasing fashion, style and luxury. And again social media is poised to fill the gap, with several YouTube channels launching this year all based around

style. It seems social media believes that there is a demand for fashion based content. However, social media has given anyone and everyone a right to an opinion.

(8 marks)

The practice of soil conservation involves methods to reduce soil erosion, prevent

depletion of soil nutrients, and restore nutrients, already lost by erosion and excessive crop

harvesting. Most methods used to control soil erosion involve, keeping the soil covered

with vegetation.

In conventional farming, the land is ploughed several times and smoothed to make a

planting surface – a practice that makes it vulnerable to soil erosion. To reduce erosion, an

increasing number of farmers in many countries are using conservation –tillage farming,

also known as minimum – tillage, or no‐ till farming, depending on the degree to which the

soil is disturbed. Farmers using these methods disturb the soil as little as possible in

planting crops.

For the minimum‐tillage method, special tillers break up and loosen the

subsurface soil without turning over the topsoil. In no‐till farming special planting

machines inject seeds, fertilizers and weed‐killers into slits made in the unploughed soil.

In addition to reducing soil erosion, conversation – tillage and no‐till farming reduce fuel

and tillage costs and water loss from soil. They can also increase the number of crops that

can be grown during a season.

Soil erosion can also be reduced by 30‐50 percent on gently sloping land by means of

contour farming – ploughing and planting crops in rows across, rather than up and down,

the sloped contours of the land.

Terracing can be used on steeper slopes. Each terrace retains some of the water running

down the vegetated slope. Terracing provides water for crops at all levels and decreases

soil erosion by reducing the amount and speed of water runoff. In areas of high rainfall,

diversions ditches must be built behind each terrace to permit adequate drainage.

In strip cropping, a series of rows of one crop, such as corn or soybeans, is planted in a

wide strip. Then the next strip is planted with a soil‐conserving cover crop, such as grass or

grass‐legume mixture, which completely covers the soil and thus reduces erosion. These

alternating rows of cover trap soil that erodes from the other rows, catch and reduce water

runoff, and help prevent the spread of plant diseases and pests from one strip to another.

Windbreaks can reduce erosion caused by exposure of cultivated lands to high winds or

shelter beats. These are long rows of trees planted to partially block the wind. Windbreaks

also provide habitats for birds, pest eating and pollinating insects and other animals.

ANSWER KEY *Answers are given in bold

1. (a) Differentiate between mutable and immutable objects in Python language with example. (2) Ans. Every variable in Python holds an instance of an object. There are two types of objects in Python, i.e., Mutable and Immutable objects. Whenever an object is instantiated, it is assigned a unique object id. The type of the object is defined at the runtime and it can’t be changed afterwards. However, its state can be changed if it is a mutable object. For example, int, float, bool, string, unicode, tuple are immutable objects in Python. In simple words, an immutable object can’t be changed after it is created. Lists, dictionaries and sets are mutable types. (b) Identify and write the name of the module to which the following functions belong: (1) (i) ceil() (ii) fetchall() Ans. borrowed funds. It will be said to be optimal when the proportion of debt and equity

is such that it results in an increase in the value of the equity share.

. Cash Flow Position: In case a company has strong cash flow position then it

may raise finance by issuing debts, as they are to be paid back after some time.

3. Interest Coverage Ratio: It refers to the number of times earnings before

interest and taxes of a company covers the interest obligation. High Interest

coverage ratio indicates that company can have more of borrowed funds. Formula

for calculating ICR = EBIT/interest.

4. Return on Investment: If return on investment is higher than the rate of interest on

debt then it will be beneficial for a firm to raise finance through borrowed funds.

5. Floatation Cost: The cost involved in issuing securities such

as brokers’ commission, under -writers’ fees, cost of prospectus etc. is

called flotation cost. While selecting the source of finance, flotation cost should be

taken into account.

21) Ans. (i) Deficit Balance of Payment: If the balance of payment of a country show deficit, demand for foreign currency will increase. Accordingly, exchange rate is expected to rise.Domestic currency will depreciate in relation to foreign currency.

(ii) Surplus Balance ofPayment: If the balance of payment of a country shows surplus, availability of foreign currency will increase. Accordingly, exchange rate is expected to fall. Domestic currency will appreciate in relation to foreign currency.

22. Items in the BOP account can be also classified into two categories viz. Autonomous or above the line items and Accommodating or below the line items. Autonomous items refer to those items which are taken with the motive of profit maximization. These transactions are not related to the country's BOP position. It is, therefore, these items are called as autonomous items. These items are taken as first items before calculating deficit or surplus in BOP account, therefore these items are called as above the line items. If the receipts from autonomous items exceed the payments for autonomous items; the BOP is called to be as surplus, and vice versa. It implies that the resident country has net claims against the ROW. On the other hand, if the payments for these items exceed the receipts from these items, it implies that the ROW has some netclaims against the resident country. Accommodating items refer to those items which are undertaken by the govt. to keep the BOP balanced. These items are transacted when a country faces disequilibrium in the BOP. Through these transactions, the govt. or monetary authorities settle the deficit or surplus in the BOP. 23. Fiscal deficits are not necessarily inflationary. However, if output is less because of lack of demand and high fiscal deficit is accompanied by higher demand and greater output and therefore

Page 90: Grade xIi - choiceschool.com · Constructions Ltd. 24, sector 10, Mysore, within 10 days, with detailed resume. (6 marks) 5. You are Malika/Manju. You are concerned about the poor

if would not be inflationary as it is covering the gap required for smooth functioning of the economy by raising the level of aggregate demand. 24. SOLUTION: Multiplier = 4as increase in income (ΔY) is 4 times the increase in investment (ΔI) Multiplier (K) = 4; k= 1/mps 4x=1, x= ¼=0.25 MPC= ( 1- mps)=0.75; MPS = 0.25

25. Initially the investment made in economy ieRs 100, the immediately income should be Rs 100. Further, half of it is spend by the people & other half is saved since MPC=0.5. The amount of Rs 5o spend by one section of society will generate income of Rs 50. This process continues till the leverage effect of multiplier exist. As soon as the effect is over, the working of multiplier stops. Now, if we add the incomes generated at all the rounds, we get Rs 200. This means the fresh investment of Rs 100 crores leads to amplify the income to Rs 200 crores, as MPC = 0.75, so K= 1/1-0.75 = 2. So, change in income = K X fresh investment ie 2 X 100 crores = Rs 200 Crores. 26. Deficient Demand refers to that situation in an economy when the AD falls short of AS at full employment level at a given unit of time. In other words, it is the situation when the planned or actual aggregate demand falls short of required aggregate demand to maintain full employment equilibrium. This situation is also referred to as underemploymentequilibrium because the actual equilibrium in an economy takes place before the level of full employment, and there exist some amount of involuntary unemployment. This situation is more deteriorating in effect, as in this situation there is drastic fall in pricelevel which leads to decline in income, employment & output. In this situation, the economy operates much below to its production capacity due to which many resources remain unutilized or underutilized. This defers the rate of economic growth & development. (2) A)Bank Rate Policy: It refers to the rate of interest charged by the Central Bank on the loans & advances given to the Commercial Banks. The Bank Rate is determined by the Central Bank itself. The rise in BR leads to rise in rate of interest which affects the savings & demand for loans. During the excess demand situation, the CB raises the BR which leads to rise in rate of interest. This leads to raise the savings & reduce the demand for loans. Consequently, there is a fall in purchasing power & further fall in AD. (1) B) Open Market Operations:It refers to the process to sale & purchase of securities by the CB in the economy.During the excess demand situation, the CB sells the bonds & securities in the market which is purchased by the banks, individuals and other financial institutions of the economy. This helps in wiping out the excess of money supply from the society & further there is a fall in purchasing power of the people. Consequently, the AD falls, this helps in reducing the price level.During the deficient demand situation, the CB purchases the securities of different institutions which induce the inflow of money supply in the economy. This further leads to rise in money supply & thus there is rise in AD. (1) 27. Undertakes all banking operations of the Govt. (1) Grants short term loans to the Govt (1) Manages the Govt’s debt. = Net Domestic Product at Market price + Depreciation – Net Indirect Net Factor income from abroad = 4,500+ 10% of 4,000 - (150-20) + (400-600) = 4,500 + 400 – 130 – 200; = Rs. 4,750 CRORES 29. (a) Gross Domestic Product at Factor Cost = Compensation of employees + Profit + Rent + Interest + Depreciation* = 800 + 200 + 150 + 100 + 50; =1,300 crores (2) (b) Factor Income To Abroad = Factor income from abroad - Gross national product at market price – (Gross Domestic Product at Factor Cost + Net indirect taxes) = 60 – 1,400 – (1,300 + 120); = 80 crores. (2) 30. 1. No, it is a part of intermediate consumption expenditure. 2. Yes, it was, as it is a part of profits. 3. No, as it is assumed that such goods are consumed, the moment they are purchased. 4. Yes, it is a part of private final consumption expenditure. 31. Credit creation by the banks is determined by (i) the amount of initial deposits and ii) the legal reserve ratio (LRR). It is assumed that all the money that goes out of banks is redeposit into the banks, and LRR consists of CRR & SLR. A Commercial Bank accepts deposits from general public & create a primary account deposit. This creates liability for the bank & asset for the depositor. It is also referred to as active deposit. From the active deposits the banks deduct the legal reserves to be kept in Central Bank (RBI), & the rest (excess reserves) are used in loans & investment. When a bank give loans & advances, it creates another deposit known as derivative deposits or secondary account deposits on the name of debtor. This leads to creation of new primary account, & thus the new primary deposits keeps on increasing until the credit multiplier stops working. Greater the LRR, smaller the amount of total final deposits, & vice versa. An Illustration to explain the process of credit creation: Let the LRR be 20% and there is a Fresh/Primary/Initial/Deposit Account of Rs 10000. The banks keep 20% ieRs 2000 as cash and lend the remaining Rs 8000 to a borrower by opening a new account, called aLoan/Secondary/Derived Account. As assumed, the amount of Rs 8000 will come back to the banks as fresh deposit from which once again the bank will keep 20% ieRs 1600 as LRR and rest Rs 6400 will be lend to some other borrower. The bank now creates another secondary account which will once again become a primary account. This process continues and the money goes on multiplying till the sum of LRR and the fresh deposit amount is same or the new deposit becomes nil. Finally, when we add the total money creation, we get Rs 50000 as the total depositcreation. Total credit creation = Initial deposit X 1/LRR = 10000 X 1/20% = 10000 X 100/20 = Rs 50000 32. The relationship between consumption and income is called the consumption function. 1. C=F(Y). Consumption function may be represented by an equation. C=a+b(Y) (a can be also be written as c)

Page 92: Grade xIi - choiceschool.com · Constructions Ltd. 24, sector 10, Mysore, within 10 days, with detailed resume. (6 marks) 5. You are Malika/Manju. You are concerned about the poor

C=consumption, a = autonomous consumption at zero level of income ; b=MPC (slope of the consumption curve) Y=income. The consumption equation shows the level of consumption for various level of income. When income is equal to zero, the autonomous consumption ( a) is financed through dissavings, which is the act of financing autonomous consumption by running down past savings or liquidating assets acquired in the past or through borrowings. The mpc shows the rate of change in consumption per unit change in income. It will always be positive and will take a value between 0 and 1. This is because of the Psychological law of consumption which states that when there is an increase in income there will be an increase in consumption but the increase in consumption will always be less than the increase in income.

When income is zero, C function lies above the 45 degree line which means there is dissavings in the economy. At the point where the C function cuts the 45 degree line C=Y, and therefore S=0, this is the breakeven level of income. For all levels of Y less than the break-even level C lies below the 45 degree line and so there will be dissavings. For all levels of income greater than the break-even level of Y, the Savings in the economy will be positive. Savings function shows the relation between savings and income. S= - c + (1- b)Y -c refers to dissavings which will be equal to autonomous consumption when income is equal to zero. (1-b) refers to marginal propencity to save (mps). Mps refers to the rate of change in Savings per unit change in Income.

Page 93: Grade xIi - choiceschool.com · Constructions Ltd. 24, sector 10, Mysore, within 10 days, with detailed resume. (6 marks) 5. You are Malika/Manju. You are concerned about the poor

Since mpc + mps =1; mps will always be positive. Therefore ths Savings is a positive function of income i.e Savings function will be positively sloped. OR DETERMINATION OF INCOME AND EMPLOYMENT. The determination of income and employment in the Keynesian theory depends on the level of AD and AS. Equilibrium level of income and output is determined where, 1) AD=AS 2) Planned saving =planned investment. Assumption 1) Fixed Price : In the short period price is fixed (constant) and elasticity of supply is infinite i.e., supply curve is perfectly elastic. It means the suppliers are willing to supply whatever amount of goods, consumer will demand at that price. 2) Fixed Interest Rate : Interest rate remains constant. 3) Aggregate supply is perfectly elastic at this price. 4) Only two sectors in the economy- households and firms. 5) Investment is autonomous. Under these circumstances equilibrium output will be determined by aggregate demand at this price in the economy. At a fixed price the value of ex-ante aggregate demand for final goods is the sum of ex-ante consumption expenditure C and ex-ante investment expenditure I on final goods. AD=C+I In the short period price and rate of interest remaining constant i.e., ex-ante Investment expenditure is autonomous i.e. same amount every year. The level of Y and Q in any economy is determined exclusively by aggregate demand and this is known as Effective Aggregate demand principle. The level of AD required to achieve full employment equilibrium is called effective demand. (or) AD at the point of equilibrium is called Effective demand. The point on the AS curve where it is intersected by AD. AD = C+I (By substituting the value of C+I) When the economy is in equilibrium the following conditions are satisfied: Quantity demanded = Quantity supply AD = AS Planned spending by firms and households is equal to planned output by firms. Planned Savings by households = Planned investment by the firms.

Page 94: Grade xIi - choiceschool.com · Constructions Ltd. 24, sector 10, Mysore, within 10 days, with detailed resume. (6 marks) 5. You are Malika/Manju. You are concerned about the poor

There are no inventory changes. Any disequilibrium between AD and AS or S and I, will be corrected through changes in the level of income and output. If AD > AS or if S< I ;there will be unplanned deletion of inventories which will send positive signals to the producers who will respond by increasing production, which will increase the level of Y and Q in the economy. If AD< AS or if S> I, there will be unplanned accumulation of inventories, which will send negative signals to the producers who will respond by cutting down production which will lead to a decrease in the level of Y and Q in the economy.

33. a) The value of APS can be negative when the value of consumption exceeds the value of income. At low level of income saving is negative. b) . APC can be greater than one when the consumption exceeds the income. At that level APS will be negative .when the APS is negative APC will be greater than one. c) APC can be equal to one when APS =0, i.e when consumption = income. 34. a) The equilibrium exchange rate is determined in the foreign exchange market by the demand

for and supply of foreign exchange.

The demand curve for foreign exchange is downward slopping. This is because a rise in the price

of foreign exchange will increase the rupee cost of foreign goods. As a result imports become more

expensive and they decline. So the demand for foreign exchange will fall.

The supply curve is upward sloping. This is because when the exchange rate rises the home

country’s goods become cheaper from the foreigners point of view. This will increase the demand

for our exports which will translate into a greater supply of foreign exchange.

The exchange rate is determined at the point of intersection between demand and supply.

At the equilibrium exchange rate the quantity demanded of foreign exchange is equal to the

supply of foreign exchange. (3)

b) 1. Current Account: It records the following items. a) Visible items of trade: The balance of exports and imports of goods is called the balance of visible trade. b) Invisible trade: The balance of exports and imports of services is called the balance of invisible trade E.g. Shipping insurance etc. c) Unilateral transfers: Unilateral transfers are receipts which resident of a country receive (or) payments that the residents of a country make without getting anything in return e.g. gifts. The net value of balances of visible trade ,of invisible trade and of unilateral transfers is the balance on current account. 2. CAPITAL ACCOUNT: It records all international transactions that involve a resident of the domestic country changing his assets with a foreign resident or his liabilities to a foreign resident. VARIOUS FORMS OF CAPITAL ACCOUNT TRANSACTIONS 1. Private transactions: These are transactions that are affecting assets (or) liabilities by individuals, businesses and non-government entities. 2. Official transactions: Transactions affecting assets and liabilities by the government and its agencies. Private and official transaction can be in the form of either direct or portfolio investment. Direct Investment: It is the act of purchasing an asset and at the same time acquiring and control of it. Portfolio investment: It is the acquisition of assets that does not give the particular control over the asset. The net value of balances of direct and portfolio investment is called the balance on capital account. (3)
