WJHS – 8 th Grade English Creative Writing Activity: Writing a Mission Statement A good deal of the writing we will be doing in English this year will challenge you to explore what is most important to you. These activities will help you focus your writing on a clear idea and incorporate solid supporting details. They will also assist you in finding your voice as a writer. Ideas and Voice are key traits for good writing. To help you center on what is important to you in life and begin finding your voice as a writer, we will be writing PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENTS. In Sean Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, he suggests that one of the keys to success is knowing what you value in life and having a clear idea of “who you want to be.” He says that a good way to do this is to develop a personal mission statement. YOUR ASSIGNMENT : Create a personal mission statement expressing your goals in life. Feel free to model yours after one you saw in Covey’s book or create something totally different and as individual as you. There are as many ways to complete this activity as there are students in 8 th grade. It can be as long or as short as you want. The key is to truly show what is most important to you and to let your personality shine through. See the reverse of this paper for some examples. REQUIREMENTS : Your final mission statement should be “pretty”. In other words, your mission statement should be accompanied by some type of graphic design (illustrations, pictures, clip art, borders, fancy lettering, shading, stickers, etc.). Use your imagination. ***** Points will be deducted if your final product is written on lined-notebook paper and/or it does not include any graphics to add pizzazz.***** DUE DATE : The final copy of your mission statement will be due Friday, September 9, 2011, at the beginning of the class period. These will be shared with the class and a digital copy will be posted on their Mahara e-portfolio. FINAL THOUGHTS : This is an activity of creative self-expression. There is no “wrong” way to do it. I ask, however, that you do put serious effort into this activity. Ultimately, you should attempt to create something that will be personally meaningful to you -- something that you will want to take home and store in a special place so that you can take it out when you are in need of a reminder of what you value most.

Creative Writing Activity:

Writing a Mission Statement

A good deal of the writing we will be doing in English this year will challenge

you to explore what is most important to you. These activities will help you focus your writing on a clear idea and incorporate solid supporting details.

They will also assist you in finding your voice as a writer. Ideas and Voice are key traits for good writing.

To help you center on what is important to you in life and begin finding your

voice as a writer, we will be writing PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENTS.

In Sean Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, he suggests that one of the keys to success is knowing what you value in life and having

a clear idea of “who you want to be.” He says that a good way to do this is

to develop a personal mission statement.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Create a personal mission statement expressing your goals in life. Feel free

to model yours after one you saw in Covey’s book or create something totally different and as individual as you. There are as many ways to

complete this activity as there are students in 8th grade. It can be as long or as short as you want. The key is to truly show what is most important to

you and to let your personality shine through. See the reverse of this paper for some examples.

REQUIREMENTS:

Your final mission statement should be “pretty”. In other words, your mission statement should be accompanied by some type of graphic design

(illustrations, pictures, clip art, borders, fancy lettering, shading, stickers,

etc.). Use your imagination. ***** Points will be deducted if your final product is written on lined-notebook paper and/or it does not include any

graphics to add pizzazz.*****

DUE DATE:

The final copy of your mission statement will be due Friday, September 9,

2011, at the beginning of the class period. These will be shared with the class and a digital copy will be posted on their Mahara e-portfolio.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

This is an activity of creative self-expression. There is no “wrong” way to do it. I ask, however, that you do put serious effort into this activity.

Ultimately, you should attempt to create something that will be personally meaningful to you -- something that you will want to take home and store in

a special place so that you can take it out when you are in need of a

reminder of what you value most.
