Chiang Mai 2011Grade Eight Trip
Overview
All grade eight students and teachers will take a trip to Chiang Mai the first week of February. We ride the train, spend a day and night together at the Thraidhos Center, and then break up and go in smaller groups to an activity that you will choose yourself.

• Go to Thaidhos by bus
• Spend the day at there doing a series of activities
• Have a Kantok dinner by the pool in the evening
• Finish with a cultural presentation and launching lanterns

Wednesday• Head out of for a two-day activity• Spend the night out away from Traidhos
–in tents, in bungalows, in village homes, or even with a family as part of a homestay.

Thursday• Continue with your activities• Some—shower and head to the train• Some—go to Traidhos to shower and
then to the train• All of us will have a chance to eat at the
train station and then ride the train back to Bangkok

take buses back to ISB• Some will stay on the train and return to

Two-Day Activities
Each of you will be given the opportunity to select three activities in order of preference. If too many people choose an activity, participants will be chosen by lottery. You will have an equal chance with everyone else who has selected that activity. It is NOT first come first serve. However, if you miss the deadline, you miss the chance to select your activity.

In the following slides, you will find a description of the activity, a description of the housing, some photos of the activity or web links, requirements for signing up, and a rating for physical activity.
Cultural Kalaidescope (24)
This trip allows you to experience different aspects of northern Thai culture. You will start by spending a day and night at the Makampom living theatre where you will participate in your own living theatre.

On the second day, you will return to the Triadhos Center to learn Thai cooking and then travel to Doi Suthep in the afternoon to visit one of Chiangmai’s most important sites.

Easy – Physically. Non of the activities require physical challenges or exertion.

Mountain Biking Mania (16)
On this trip you will travel to Chiang Dao, where you will learn basic bike maintenance, visit the Chiang Dao caves, ride back from the caves to your camp on Wednesday, and then ride the trails around the camp on Thursday.

Difficult – physically. You should be in good physical condition. You must have intermediate bike skills
Comfortable – lodging. You will sleep on mattresses on a wooden floor. Flush toilets, showers (cold). Open canteen.
Paddle and Pedal (20)On this trip you will
visit Sri Lanna National Park.
On the way, you will go bike riding in the countryside, and have a chance to observe a northern Thai village.

at the park, you qill learn basic kayaking skills and paddle out to the houseboat.

Medium – Physically. Biking and paddling will be at our own pace. You need basic biking skills—like riding around Nichada.
Comfortable – lodging. You will sleep on mattresses on a wooden floor. Flush toilets. Open canteen.

If you select this two-day event, you will participate in two different activities:
1. Visit the Pun Pun organic farm2. Visit the elephant sanctuary

At Pun Pun farm you will learn about seed saving, sustainable agriculture, building from natural materials.

At the elephant sanctuary, you will interact with and care for the elephants.

Intermediate – Physically. You will do some physical activity when washing, feeding, elephants and working on the farm.

could make.It includes rock climbing,
caving, hiking and zip wiring through the tree tops.

Challenging – physically and mentally. This is an activity for those who are not afraid of heights. Physically not demanding.
Comfortable – Lodging. You will have comfortable mattress, hot showers, and eat in an open canteen.
Valley Adventure (32)
This is another active choice you could make, and includes white water rafting and hiking.

will go directly from the Prem Center to the Mae Daeng valley where you will be first instructed on how to paddle a white water raft. Once you’ve been trained, you and your team will hit the white water.

After white water rafting, you will have lunch near the river and then hike through an Ahka village on your way to the Lisu village where you will stay. You’ll have a chance to observe village life and compare the characteristics of a Lisu village and an Akha village. The headman will talk with you in the evening at the campfire.

On Thursday, you will take a hike to a nearby waterfall and then travel back to Chiangmai.

Medium – Physically. If you are in moderate physical condition, you can do the hiking and rafting.
Comfortable – lodging. You will sleep on mattresses on a woodend floor. Hot showers. Open canteen.

This is a challenging choice you can select.
For this activity, you will trek approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) along ridges, across villages and through valleys deep into the Mae Daeng valley to a Karen village.

Once you arrive in the village, you will have a chance to swim in the river, observe village life and visit an elementary boarding school where kids come from around the area.

you will hike down stream and then pilot and ride on bamboo rafts down the river to a location where you can be transported out of the valley and back to Chiangmai.

in good physical condition to hike and raft.
Rustic – Lodging. You will sleep on mattresses on a wooden floor with blankets. Traditional Thai washing with clay jars. Open canteen.

3. Be sure your parents complete the permission forms and sign them (If you choose Monkey magic or Mountain Biking Mania, be sure to have special permission forms completed by your parents as well).

If you don’t complete the rock climbing/zip wire or mountain biking permission forms, you will lose your chance to select monkey magic activity.
