The sixth chapter, Computers for Creating, describes different ways that we can use the computer and the Internet to do crafts and create several different things. The Internet contains many websites that have information for the different interests that we may have. Chapter books present a “reading to learn” experience. Therefore, students may read independently or in a shared reading experience or books may be read to them. Present students with one chapter at a time for reading and comprehension instruction. After each page is read, ask the discussion question that appears in italics at the bottom of the page. Focus on pictures to reinforce understanding. Repeated readings are encouraged. Suggested Reading Levels for this chapter include: Levels J/K, presented in a text format, and E, presented in both text and symbol-supported formats. Read and Answer Comprehension activities extend beyond “checking” what students remember from reading. During instruction, students learn to refer to the book, using both illustrations and text, to locate answers to questions. Students recognize types of responses appropriate to who, what and where formats. Question responses may also provide students with a foundation for story retell. Activities should be repeated throughout the unit to increase students’ skills in multiple areas of comprehension. Select the level of comprehension questions appropriate to each student. Comprehension questions are also in three formats. Level 3 is text only. Level 2 is symbol-supported. Level 1 is written in sentence strip format, allowing students to select from multiple choices or one errorless picture choice. Build comprehension and vocabulary through discussions. Standards Connection These two standards connection lessons are designed to build summarizing skills and are applicable to all chapters. Based on the content of the chapter, determine whether this book is a work of fiction or nonfiction. Select the first lesson if the chapter is based on fictional formats that have a story line and the second lesson if the chapter is based on informational text that includes facts and historical events. The first two sets of comprehension questions are derived from the lower levels of text. An advanced level of mixed questions is provided in text-only format. Pre- and post-assessments are available through Monthly Checkpoints. Differentiated Tasks Level 3 Level 2 Level 1 Students will independently read literature forms, including chapter books, biographies, poems, fiction and nonfiction works that have been adapted to student reading level. Students will independently read questions about a story and write, speak or select an answer. A computer can make you an artist!

There are websites that can help you

make things. We can make craft projects

for home or school. Bart likes to fi nd

ways to create on his computer. He helps

his friends make things too.

Discuss what crafts are.

37 Bart wants to send a birthday card to

his friend Raj. Bart does not have time

to go to the store to buy one. Bart thinks

about the computer. He can make a card

on the computer.

These are called

ecards. He can

choose a card, type a message and then

send it as an email. Raj will enjoy the

card he has made for him.

ecard example:kids.yahoo.com/ecards

How is an ecard different than other greeting cards?

Page 6: Grade Band: Unit 14 Unit Target: Physical Science Unit ...csargent2.weebly.com/uploads/1/8/1/9/18198635/march-_lesson13.pdf37 Bart wants to send a birthday card to his friend Raj.

38 A calendar helps us remember special

dates. A calendar is easy to make on a

computer. Every month, Bart’s teacher

makes a calendar for

the class. She prints the

calendar so Bart can take it home. Bart

writes special dates on the calendar. Bart

writes the school play and the school

dance on the calendar. He does not want

to forget these dates.

Calendar example:dltk-cards.com/calendar

How does Bart use the calendar from the Internet?

39

Bart can also use a computer to make

invitations. He helps his friend Pam

make invitations to her birthday party. An

invitation tells the date and time of the

party. An invitation tells where the party

will be. Bart and Pam add a picture to the

invitation. It’s easy to be creative with a

computer.

What is an invitation for?

Bart likes to make crafts. Sometimes

he uses the computer to help him. Many

websites will show craft projects. Craft

projects are fun to make. Bart made a

bald eagle craft with a paper sack. The

computer helps Bart make many things.
