Irony

What is Irony?

Irony is about expectations.

Irony: the opposite of what is expected.

3 kinds of irony

◼ Verbal

◼ Dramatic

◼ Situational

Verbal Irony

A character says one thing but means the opposite

Also called sarcasm or being sarcastic.

Example:

Awesome! Another homework packet!

Dramatic Irony

When the reader understands more about the events of a story than a character.

You know a secret that a character doesn’t.

Example:

Tim’s parents are proud of the “A” he got on the test, but we know he cheated.

Situational Irony

When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected.

Something about the situation is completely unexpected.

Example:

Bill Gates uses an Apple computer.

Review

Something that is ironic is unexpected.

If unexpected by a character, it’s dramatic.

If unexpected by everyone, it’s situational.

If it’s sarcasm, it’s verbal.

Things to think about as you read

1. Identify and describe each character:

Della-

Jim-

2. How does Della manage money?

3. What gifts do they buy each other?

4. What is ironic about the gifts they each buy?

5. How do they react to the gifts

6. What is the theme of this story?

Media Comparison

Today we will be examining media bias. Media bias is the bias or perceived bias of journalists and news

producers within the mass media in the selection of events and stories that are reported and how they are

covered. Through the examination of different types of bias and different news sources and stories you will

explore how the media influences the way citizens and society interpret information.

TO BEGIN:

Visit http://www.studentnewsdaily.com/types-of-media-bias/

Complete the “Identifying Media Bias” matrix. (You will use this in your exploration of news sources)

Liberal Media Conservative Media

Washington Post The Weekly Standard

New York Times Washington Times

CBS News Fox News

LA Times

Select one conservative & one liberal media source from the internet. You need to locate the same

story from the two sources you select. Stories must be of a political nature – not sports or weather!

Read the stories presented by both news sources & complete the following tasks:

1. What is the headline for each story?

2. Identify negative terms used in the two articles.

3. Identify positive terms used in the two articles.

4. Identify what the author of each article is attempting to get you to understand. Are the

viewpoints different?

5. Identify whether the stories are slanted to conservative or liberal political ideology. Explain

how you made your determination for each.

6. Identify which type or types of bias are being utilized within each story. How does this

affect the way information is presented?

7. Which article fits your views better? Why?
