The People in the Masai MaraThe Masai people who dwell in the Mara and its environs are strongly autonomous people who still practice custom and ritual as an invaluable part of their lives. They view themselves not just as dwellers of this area but that they are so much a part of the existence of the land as the land is a part of their existence.

About HippoA ringside seat for the greatest show on earth.Located at the very center of the famous ‘Mara Triangle' of the world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve, the Mara Serena Safari Lodge is the ultimate safari destination. Set high on a bush-cloaked hill with long views over the savannah and down to the winding coils of the hippo-filled Mara River, it stands centre-stage to one of Africa's most dramatic wildlife arenas, with a ringside seat for the ‘greatest wildlife show on earth', the legendary migration of the wildebeest.

The Animals in Masai MaraA zoologist paradise, the Masai Mara National Reserve is exceptionally rich in African wildlife, both for quantity and variety. The 320 square kilometers of open plain savanna, woodlands and riverine forests are home to a wide array of life, in particular mammals: from big cats to antelopes, from elephants to hippopotami. Furthermore, some endangered species -such as the black rhino, the African hunting dog, and the cheetah- inhabit the reserve, and although they're found in modest numbers, a close encounter is certainly possible.

The Masai Mara National Reserve, with its collection of grass-eaters and predators, is one of the few places on earth where the "Big Five" can be found. The phrase "Big Five" was originally -and most sadly- coined by game hunters to refer to the most sought and dangerous animals to kill -the members chosen for the difficulty in hunting them and not their size. the five animals that they are the "Big Five" are: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros.

The history of Masai Mara

When it was originally established in 1948 as a Wildlife Sanctuary, the Mara covered only 520 square kilometres of the current area, including the Mara Triangle. The area was extended to the east in 1961 to cover 1,821 km2 and converted to a Game Reserve. The Narok County Council) took over management of the reserve at this time. Part of the Game Reserve was given National Reserve status in 1974, and the remaining 159 km2 (61 sq mi) were returned to local communities. An additional 162 km2 were removed from the reserve in 1976, and the park was reduced to 1,510 km2 in 1984.In 1995, the TransMara County Council was formed in the Western part of the reserve, and control was divided between the new council and the existing Narok County Council. In May 2001, the not-for-profit Mara Conservancy took over management of the Mara Triangle.
