First, let’s think about Mars!

WHAT do you already Know about Mars? Write at least 3 things.

What do you Want to know about Mars? Write at least 3 research questions.

Over the next few weeks, you will be learning a lot of new information about Mars. You can keep

your notes here on this LEARNED section of the KWL chart. You can write down some key words and

facts from our lessons, reading, and discussions.

Section 1 – Life on Mars: Why is it important? Week 19 __________________________________________________________________

Some people are just curious!

Some people think that people

from Earth could move to

Mars if we run out of

resources.

Why do you think people care about whether or not, there is life on Mars? Write your ideas in the bubble below.

Now watch this 3 minute film about Mars . After watching, see if you can add other new ideas into the bubble above. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8pnmwOXhoY

Section 2 – Mission Mars Project – Group Questions & Jobs Week 20 __________________________________________________________________

Each researcher in your group will be responsible for presenting a different topic about your new Mars mission and colony. Here are the different research topics:

- Researcher 1: Getting to Mars

- Researcher 2: Finding water, air, and growing food on Mars

- Researcher 3: Building shelter / a place to live on Mars

- Researcher 4: Creating a typical day of a colony family and rules for the colony As you’re researching and taking notes on your topics, please consider the answers to the following research questions. You will receive a research role card with these questions to help you focus on your role in the group.

RESEARCHER 1: Getting to Mars: 1. How long does it take to get to Mars? 2. How should people prepare their bodies or train for the journey? 3. How many people will go on this first journey and what skills should they have? 4. What do we need to take for the journey? 5. What kind of a rocket/ vehicle will take you there? What should it have?

RESEARCHER 2: Finding water, creating air, and growing food:

1. Is there any water on Mars? 2. Can you use any water that is already there or how can you create your own water system? 3. What is the atmosphere like? 4. How is it different from Earth? How would it be possible to breathe there? 5. Is it possible to grow plants there? How? 6. What is the soil like there? How can we produce water/plants there?

RESEARCHER 3: Building a shelter / place to live:

1. What is the weather like there? 2. What kind of building could withstand that weather/atmosphere? 3. What kind of materials could you use for those buildings? 4. Where could you find those materials for the construction / building? OR how could you make those materials on Mars? 5. How could people transport themselves from one building to another?

RESEARCHER 4: Creating a typical day of a family at the colony on Mars: 1. What are the laws/rules of living on your colony? 2. What are the roles of people in the colony? / family? Who can be the leaders? 3. Will there be any schools? What would they learn? What kind of education is important for the citizens of

your Mars colony? 4. What kind of jobs would be there? 5. How will daily life be different from Earth?

Section 4 – Mars – Reader guided research Week 21 __________________________________________________________________

Last term, we researched our project topic by using Britannica and other internet resources. This term, we will use a National Geographic Mars reader to find important details about Mars that will help us with our project.

We will use some of the guiding comprehension questions to help us think critically in our group. After reading and answering the comprehension questions, you will get time to discuss the critical thinking questions that will give you ideas for your project.

Together let’s read pages 4-19

1. How is Mars similar to Earth?

_____________________________________________________________________________________

2. Why is Mars red?

_____________________________________________________________________________________

3. What is the temperature and weather like on Mars compared to Earth? Why?

_____________________________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________________

With your group, talk about how you can build a house or building to withstand this kind of weather. What materials could you use? What shape? Include some notes and drawings.

Section 7 – Extension Activities - A SHORT STORY: ‘THE ZOO’ __________________________________________________________________

READ & THINK & WRITE A PARAGRAPH ABOUT ONE OF THE QUESTIONS BELOW

A short space story: The Zoo by Edward D. Hoch

The children were always good during the month of August, especially when it began to get near the twenty-

third. It was on this day that the great silver space-ship carrying Professor Hugo's Interplanetary Zoo settled down

for its six-hour visit to the Chicago area.

Before daybreak the crowds would form, long lines of children and adults both, each one holding his or her dollar,

and waiting with wonderment to see what race of strange creatures the Professor had brought this year.

In the past, they saw some three-legged creatures from Venus, or tall, thin men from Mars, or even snake-like

horrors. This year, as the great round ship settled slowly to earth in the huge tri-city parking area just outside of

Chicago, they watched with awe as the sides slowly slid up to show the familiar cages. In them were some wild

breed of nightmare-small, horse-like animals that moved with quick, jerking motions and they constantly

chattered with high voice. The citizens of Earth clustered around as Professor Hugo's crew quickly collected the

waiting dollars, and soon the good Professor himself made an appearance, wearing his many-colored rainbow

cape and top hat. ``People of Earth,'' he called into his microphone.

The crowd's noise died down and he continued. ``Peoples of Earth, this year you see a real treat for your single

dollar--brought to you across a million miles of space at great expense. Gather around, see them, study them,

listen to them, tell your friends about them. But hurry! My ship can stay here only six hours!

And the crowds slowly filed by, at once horrified and fascinated by these strange creatures that

looked like horses but ran up the walls of their cages like spiders. ``This is certainly worth a

dollar,'' one man remarked, hurrying away. ``I'm going home to get my wife.''

All day long it went like that, until ten thousand people had filed by the barred cages set into the side of the

spaceship. Then, as the six-hour limit ran out, Professor Hugo once more took microphone in hand. ``We must go

now, but we will return next year on this date. And if you enjoyed our zoo this year, phone your friends in other

cities about it. We will land in New York tomorrow, and next week on to London, Paris, Rome, Hong Kong, and

Tokyo. Then on to other worlds!

He waved farewell to them, and as the ship rose from the ground, the Earth people agreed that this had been the

very best Zoo yet. . . .

Write a personal response in one paragraph in your notebook.

• Do you think such a story could be real? Why / Why not?

• What do you think about collecting creatures from different planets and putting them behind bars?

Page 24: GRADE 5 TERM 3 - MARS PROJECT · 2020-01-29 · 051-eng-wb3-(CriticalThinking) Section 2 – Mission Mars Project – Group Questions & Jobs Week 20 _____ Each researcher in your

Section 7 – Extension Activities- A SHORT STORY : ‘THE ZOO’ __________________________________________________________________

Now read from one of the creatures’ POINT OF VIEW:

Some two months and three planets later, the silver ship of Professor Hugo settled at last onto the familiar jagged

rocks of the strange planet, and the strange horse-spider creatures filed quickly out of their cages. Professor Hugo

was there to say a few parting words, and then they scurried away in a hundred different directions, seeking their

homes among the rocks.

In one, the she-creature was happy to see the return of her mate and offspring. She babbled a greeting in a

strange language and hurried to give them a hug. ``You were gone for a long time. Was it good?''

And the he-creature nodded. ``The little one especially enjoyed it. We visited eight worlds and saw many things.''

The little one ran up the wall of the cave. ``On the place called Earth it was the best. The creatures there wear

garments over skins, and they walk on two legs.''

``But isn't it dangerous?'' asked the she-creature.

``No,'' her mate answered. ``There are bars to protect us from them. We remain right in the ship.

Next time you must come with us.

And the little one nodded. ``It was the very best Zoo ever. . . .''
