Math

Our new unit is Addition and Subtraction. Students will be using strategies to

recall basic addition and subtraction facts, solving

addition and subtraction equations, estimating sums

and differences for 2-digit numbers, adding and

subtracting 2-digit numbers mentally, using personal

strategies to add and subtract numbers with up to 3

digits, and writing and solving addition and subtraction

problems. I will be creating a storybird account for

each student where they can log on and practice

writing and solving word problems. Please practice

basic facts for 10-15 minutes every evening. You can

do this with xtramath.org (recommended), flash cards, worksheets or online using

the Black Gold website activities under math 3, number.

Science

We will begin Hearing and Sound. Students will explore the nature of sound, its

sources, its qualities and what it is. They will learn that sound is a

vibration and that changes in vibration can affect the loudness,

pitch and quality of sound. They will learn about how sound can

travel by studying what things carry sound, what things make it

louder or softer, and what happens to sound when it reaches their

ears. The sensitivity of human ears and those of other animals is

examined, as students learn about the safe use of this valuable sense.

Social Studies

We will begin January by finishing up Ukraine. This month

we will look at the land and resources of Ukraine as well as

the goods and services produced in Ukraine. We will then

begin our next country of study, Peru! We will begin by

looking at the quality of life in Peru towards the end of

the month.

Energize Oil Country Program

During the month of November, I was given the opportunity to once again

participate in the energize oil country program. I participated in this program with

my class last year and since I was one of the 200 classes previously, I could pre-

register this year. I decided to sign us up again! We are so lucky to be able to

participate in such a great program. In our welcome kit, we received a t-shirt,

pencil, pledge certificate and energy log book for each student in our class and 3D.

The program begins on January 9th and will continue until March 19th. The goal of

this program is to increase physical literacy and provide opportunities for students

to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle for themselves, with their family and

friends, in their classroom and in their community.

During this 10-week period, students are encouraged to participate in 60 minutes

of physical activity each day and track their progress in their Energy logs. I will

then collect them weekly and upload the information to the program website. Every

10% of our classroom that upholds the pledge each week, we will earn 1 entry into

the grand prize. The prize includes a trip for the entire class to watch the Oilers

in action at Rogers Place on Sunday, April 9th.

I will be keeping the log books in the owl books in the homework pouch so that we

can access them both at school and at home. We can complete the 60 minutes

during most school days (not Fridays or Early Dismissal Days) so I will mostly need

your participation to fill in the weekend. (Friday- Sunday) We will fill in the days

for the school week. Please record your time over the weekend and send the book

back in the owl book on Monday. Feel free to add in activities your child does

during the school week as well.

I appreciate your support!

Thank you, Ms. Amber Galenza
