Home LetterDear Family,This week’s reading explores the question “How do members of a community help each other?” In the play Two Bear Cubs, adapted from a Miwok myth, we’ll read about how a community of animals—and a heroic worm—help a mother bear find her lost cubs and safely bring them back home. We’ll also read the informational text Whose Land Is It? to find out how people and animals can share the same habitat.

This week’s…Target Vocabulary: scolding, greedily, ignores, hesitation, burden, glancing, base, console, drowsy, heroic

Phonics Skills: Vowel sounds in spoon and wood

Vocabulary Strategy: Prefixes pre-, re-, bi-

Comprehension Skill: Story structure—name the setting, character, and plot in a story

Comprehension Strategy: Summarize—tell the important parts of the story in your own words

Writing Focus: Opinion writing— prewrite a persuasive essay

Go to the eBook to read and listen to this week’s selection.

Activities to Do Together

Vocabulary With your child, use the Target Vocabulary words to make up a story about how two animals help each other overcome a problem or get through a difficult situation.

Helping Others Talk to your child about the importance of teamwork and helping others. Ask your child to think of a time when he or she asked a friend, neighbor, or family member to help find or do something. Ask, “How did you work together to solve the problem?”

Super Animal! Discuss with your child the hazard posed by wild animals venturing into residential or well-populated areas—both to the animals as well as to the affected communities. Have your child research a problem with wild animals in your community, state, or region. Ask him or her to write an outline for an essay that persuades people to find a solution that works for them and the animal/s alike.
