Grade 10 Provincial Assessment Results 2018-2019 Mathematics, Scientific Literacy, French Reading
The Grade 10 provincial assessment measures student performance in mathematics, scientific literacy, and French Second Language reading. The goal of the government of New Brunswick is for 90% of Grade 10 students to achieve appropriate or higher levels of proficiency in each of these subject areas.
Background
In keeping with the Department’s assessment protocol, test items were developed and selected in 2014-15 by groups of New Brunswick educators, including Grade 10 classroom teachers and subject matter experts. Field-testing of the test items was conducted in May 2015, followed by selection of items for the provincial pilot the following year. All components of the assessment were implemented in spring 2018, except for Post-Intensive French reading which was implemented last year.
Most students enrolled in New Brunswick schools participate in provincial assessments. Accommodations are provided when warranted to include as many students as possible. In certain circumstances, it is necessary and fitting for students to be exempted from participation. This is the case when the testing format is not suitable for a student to demonstrate their learning, even with accommodations. For further information, please consult the Provincial Assessment Program: Protocols for Accommodations and Exemptions.
All students are included when calculating the results, other than those who were absent when the assessment was administered. The percentage of students with exemptions is counted in the Below Appropriate Achievement category.

Grade 10 Mathematics Assessment
The New Brunswick mathematics curriculum focuses on the ability of students to analyze, reason, and communicate ideas effectively as they pose, formulate, solve, and interpret mathematical problems in a variety of situations.
Of the 4892 participating Grade 10 students, 62.8% were successful on the mathematics component. Of these students, 61.3% attained Appropriate Achievement and 1.5% attained Strong Achievement. Please note that Below Appropriate Achievement includes students who were exempt (5.5%), but does not include students who did not write for other reasons (7.0%). The graph below indicates the results for the past two years.
The following graph indicates the percentage of students achieving at Below Appropriate, Appropriate, and Strong levels from 2017-18 and 2018-19.
Success rates by district were as follows: ASD-North (56.1%), ASD-East (61.1%), ASD-South (65.8%), and ASD-West (63.6%).

Grade 10 Scientific Literacy Assessment
Scientific literacy focuses on the ability of students to engage in inquiry, problem solving, and decision making. Scientific inquiry involves posing questions and developing explanations for phenomena. Problem solving involves developing skills needed to seek solutions to problems for decision-making, taking context into account.
Of the 4812 participating Grade 10 students, 65.4% were successful on the scientific literacy component. Of these students, 63.8% attained Appropriate Achievement and 1.6% attained Strong Achievement. Please note that Below Appropriate Achievement includes students who were exempt (5.0%) but does not include students who did not write for other reasons (9.0%). The graph below indicates the trend line in scientific literacy from 2017-18 and 2018-19.
The following graph indicates the percentage of students achieving at Below Appropriate, Appropriate, and Strong levels from 2017-18 and 2018-19.
Success rates by district were as follows: ASD-North (60.9%), ASD-East (68.4%), ASD-South (67.7%), and ASD-West (62.6%).

Grade 10 French Second Language Reading Assessment
Grade 10 French second language reading competency was assessed in all three French second language programs in 2018-19: Early French Immersion (Grade 3 Entry), Late French Immersion (Grade 6 Entry), and Post Intensive French. All French Immersion students wrote the same assessment; however, achievement standards were adjusted to reflect expectations for the two programs. Post Intensive French students wrote a different assessment.
EARLY IMMERSION
Of the 1241 participating Early French Immersion (Grade 3 Entry) students, 75.0% were successful on the French reading component. Of these students, 73.8% attained Appropriate Achievement and 1.2% attained Strong Achievement. Please note that Below Appropriate Achievement includes students who were exempt (0.2%) but does not include students who did not write for other reasons (4.2%).
