T eaching shapes to children is an important educational activity.

The ability to recognize and describe shapes is a fundamental skill that

provides a foundation to use shapes to describe objects and greatly

enhance a child’s ability to communicate verbally.

Saanvi Sharma -Grade 1B

Expresses her understanding of Nouns through drawing and writing.

Home Sweet Home by Grade 3

A habitat is a home of an animal or plant in natural surroundings. Similarly, we all wish to have a home filled with safety and security. Home gives us all the affection, warmth and care by our near and dear ones. So in order to understand the perspective of a dream home of our Grade 3 students, they designed their own habitat, a dream home. The students wrote the different features to be included in their habitat, drew and coloured their dream home. It was refreshing to understand the various ideas and imaginations our Grade 3 students had and wished for in their dream home. However, it’s rightly quoted that ‘ A house is made of wood and stone but only love can make it a home.’

MORNING PRAYERS & MINDFULNESS

The mission statement of International Baccalaureate "aims to develop inquiring,

knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more

peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect." Starting the day

with a morning prayer from a different religion every day helps create awareness and

inculcate mindfulness in the impressionable children towards different cultures,

rituals and beliefs. By making them more open and accepting of the diversity in our

school, the teachers are helping them develop an international mind set which will be

beneficial for their future irrespective of whether they choose to stay here in our

country or go to another one. The school has done a wonderful job by incorporating

such a simple yet beautiful step in the daily routine Dr SONAL JOMRAJ

Parent of Cahir Jomraj & Aranck Jomraj-Grade 10

In current lockdown scenario, with no domestic help around, life at times does get a bit overwhelming with

increase in online activities all over and life as usual at home!!!….How about adding in that Calmness and

Smile while us was doing as much? Recently, I was introduced to a concept of I enjoyed reading about it and

sharing a few lines:

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are, what we are doing, and

not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what is going on around us.

While mindfulness is innate, it can be cultivated through proven techniques, short pauses we embed into

everyday life.

When we are mindful, we reduce stress, enhance performance, aware ness through observing our own

minds and increase our attention to others’ well-being.

Mindfulness meditation gives us a time in our lives, when we can suspend judgments, unleash our natural

curiosity about the workings of the mind, approaching our experience with warmth and kindness—to

ourselves and others.

“Be in the moment” was what I had learnt in my Art of Living meditation class few years ago.

I am living it now ….

Enjoying the aroma of my filter coffee,

Pausing to look at the colours of hibiscus in my garden,

Gazing at the waterfall on the nearby mountain with my daughter!

I can see the smile coming back on our faces…

What’s your mantra??

MORNING PRAYERS & MINDFULNESS

M orning Prayer helps the child seek the Almighty's blessings making him

grateful, reflective and focused in carrying out his daily activities. Prayers of different

religious communities helps further the IB philosophy of international mindedness a

child needs in order to relate to different religious values, attitudes and understanding.

I t will support the child grow into a globally responsible individual who is mindful of

the different cultures, beliefs and languages. This will establish the concept

of international mindedness and help in furthering greater world peace and

development. Kudos to RBKIA for implementing this idea of carrying out the daily

morning prayer of different religious communities!!!

SANGEETA COUTINHO

Parent of Nicholas Coutinho-Grade 10

I believe that the perfect way to start the day should be with a prayer, expressing gratitude to be healthy

especially during this tough time. I find it amazing that every morning they sing prayers, this has taught my

daughter to be a global citizen, respect all cultures and most importantly have faith, which things will get

better. Her class has so many different cultures, teaching her so much about them and her own. Through

this, she has learnt to develop international mindedness and gratefulness for all that she has been bestowed

with!

JINGA JOISHER

Parent of Fiyonee Bhanushali Grade 10)

I am very happy that the school has taken a good initiative that students are praying

in class. All prayers of all religions have a certain specific task which ultimately

leads to victory of good over evil. It should be prayed for keeping in mind;

international mindfulness and being mindful. It will surely help the students have a

calming effect, reducing stress and help lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle. A wise

old sage once said, “An ounce-glass is no instrument to calculate the quantity of the

ocean. Similarly, a limited human mind and intellect are no tape to measure the

reality of one’s religion.”

Thank you for this wonderful initiative!

GURU POORNIMA

Our pranams to our Online Gurus

Guru Purnima is celebrated to reinforce the impact that teachers have on

students.

They have been with us throughout the ancient times and have been a

major influence to our culture today. ‘Guru’ is derived from the Sanskrit

word. It can be broken into two parts:

‘gu’ translates to darkness, and ‘ru’ translates to remover. Therefore

together, the word represents the destroyer of darkness (which could

further be interpreted as the 7 deadly sins) and bring out the

enlightenment through knowledge.

Guru often represents Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. The combination of

these Gods shows how a Guru creates and sustains knowledge, completely destroying and getting rid

of ignorance. This shloka is a way of saluting our Guru’s for nudging us into a meaningful path.

Guru Brahma is credited as the ‘Lord of Creation’, in reference to creating opportunities for ourselves

and good wishes. Guru Vishnu is often regarded as the ‘Lord of Sustenance’, to sustain our knowledge

and skills. Guru Maheshwara is known as the ‘Destroyer’, the destroyer of ill habits. Guru Sakshaat,

Para Brahma, refers to the Almighty God, meaning our teachers are the almighty, and lead us to a

path towards enrichment.

The last line says that we bow to, and salute our teachers.

Thank you for making us individual intellectuals!

We really appreciate all you do for us especially during these difficult times and wish you

Happy Guru Purnima!

MYP IMPORTANCE OF PERSONAL PROJECT

W e at RBK International Academy aspire to

educate global citizens who have the mindset to co-

operate with the International Community to make this

a better world through skills of creative thinking and

problem solving. This is possible by training the students

of MYP5 - Class 10 to research in depth about a topic of

their interest; this is achieved by assigning the “PERSONAL PROJECT”. The purpose of this is to act as a

culminating project for the MYP, plus allows us to show our

understanding of the approaches to learning (ATL) skills. This

is our golden opportunity to develop a project which meets

our needs as a learner and to think about ourselves as a

learner. Completing this project will allow the students of

grade 10 to showcase our approaches to learning skills, as

well as challenge ourselves to take the initiative to envision,

plan, create, investigate and share a product or an outcome

of personal interest to our target audience.

As a student I believe, this project is the best platform to enhance so much knowledge, and understanding

about a topic that we always were so curious about. The assessment of the PERSONAL PROJECT is largely

based on the Approaches to Learning Skills (ATL) that make up the skill development aspects of the MYP.

The aims of the PERSONAL PROJECT are to encourage and enable us to participate in sustained, self -

directed inquiry of our topic of interest. Through the PERSONAL PROJECT we aspire to generate new

insights and deeper understanding through in-depth and independent investigation, and develop

confidence as principled, lifelong learners.

DP LOCK-DOWN CHALLENGES

This lockdown has taken us all by shock and we’re still adjusting to this new lifestyle. One way to learn new

things is by attending webinars and learning about what universities look for in students and how the visa

processes have changed. I attended a webinar conducted by Collegey about how international students

receive funding to study in the USA. It was a zoom session. The discussion panellists talked about how the

fee structure of universities has changed due to this global pandemic. The webinar was an interactive one

where they asked if we had any questions at the webinar. I was able to get answers to my questions about

International funding. Overall, It was quite good and informative.

- Princy Marimathu, IBDP 2

Making Use of the Lock-down to Plan for College

Since our grade 11 summer vacations came earlier than expected it gave me the opportunity to understand

and brainstorm about the things I would like to pursue in life. Being under nation lockdown, I came across

many counsellors who are using online mediums like webinars to help us gain knowledge about the various

careers and colleges. I personally attended about 2-3 webinars by Univariety to understand the field of

designing and what it has to offer. I understood the college requirements for counties like the USA, UK,

Singapore and India. I understood how Covid-19 would affect my college decisions in a positive and negative

way. All in all, these webinars helped me to get a clearer picture regarding my decisions and was also a

productive use of time.

Locked Down But not Out – Learn New Skills!

Due to COVID - 19 Virus the school was shut early. When the lockdown started our online school also

started. To use my free time after online school I would play games with my friends and do online courses.

The courses I did were Python 3, JavaScript, CSS, Google Digital Marketing, etc. It was a fun learning

experience as there were different websites from which I did the courses, after the completion of each

course I was given a certificate. The certificates are valid in many big companies as they were courses

which I learned from Google, Harvard, etc. The coding courses were interesting as at first it seemed difficult

but now it’s become easier. After each course, we had to create 5 projects like in JavaScript I made a

calculator, quote generator, sequence generator, etc. There are few courses that are still ongoing, even

during the early vacation, I did each course every day for 1 hr 30 mins to 2 hrs. The courses I did would help

me in the future as I will be doing something in the technology/computer field. There are many free websites

from which you can learn different courses on different subjects which will be helpful.

DP TRANSITION IN THESE UNCERTAIN TIMES:THE DIPLOMA PROGRAM

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. A curriculum and education system that is as highly-

regarded, respectable, and popular as it is feared and infamous. As a 10th grader in the IB’s Middle

Years Program, I was constantly being told from teachers and students alike that there was nothing I

could do to prepare myself for the amount of work and stress that came with the Diploma Program. It

was even worse when I started finding the same things written online by current students and past

alumni of the IBDP. It would have been quite the understatement to say that I was distressed beyond

belief just upon hearing these rumours, and I was wracked with worry simply considering what was to

come. Thankfully, though, everything that you read on Quora or some random IB help website on the

Internet doesn’t always give you the entire story.

“International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes aim to do more than other curricula by developing

inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to succeed.” This is the IB

Organization’s vision statement. I first had a chance to read this when I moved to India and was

enrolling in an IB school in Grade 9. Naturally, my first impression of this sentence was that it simply

glorified the IB and its workings. I mean, such an enticing sentence could only help attract prospective

students, right? But when I was introduced to the IB Diploma Program, I took the time to reflect upon

this sentence and what it really means, and I realized that the IB is much more than just a shiny and

attractive school system for students who can afford it. Similarly, I learnt that the IBDP is not as

fearsome, stressful, or difficult as it is touted.

The IB Diploma Program really is a revolutionary and advanced curriculum meant for enthusiastic

students. The IB offers every student the chance to pick and choose the subjects that they want to focus

on (based on what they want to do in the future and their own interests) out of a very wide variety of

subjects and 6 distinct groups. Along with the purely academic subjects, the IBDP puts great emphasis

on giving students a philosophical point of view with Theory Of Knowledge (TOK). It has also made CAS

(Creativity, Action, & Service) mandatory for all students, which helps them transcend into global

citizens and apply their minds in creative ways. An added incentive for things like CAS is that it aids

many students with college applications as well! The IBDP clearly gives you ample opportunity to

succeed, as long as you are willing to think outside the box and put in the work. Now, don’t let me tell

you that there isn’t any work, because there is. A whole LOT of it. So far, I’m not too deep in the IBDP

myself, and I can already see the roller coaster educational journey that lies before me. But it's my belief

that if you successfully manage your time and distribute your work evenly, the IB should be an enjoyable

experience. I just hope that these principles hold true for me as well!

- Pranay Duggal, IBDP 1
