Graduate Admissions at MassArt

Transcript of Grad Programs Viewbook

  • THIS ISWHEREFEARLESSSTARTS.

  • Every student who graduates from Massachusetts College of Art and Design receives a shirt that says

MassArt Made Me Fearless. This fearlessness to innovate, challenge, and redefine the world around

them is what sets our alumni, students, faculty, and staff apart. Established in 1873, MassArt was and

remains the only freestanding public college of art and design in the United States. The founders dared

to imagine a schooldedicated to producing educators, professional artists, designers, and architects

that was open to anyone with talent and the will to succeed.

True to its history, MassArt continues to envision all that is possible and strives to reach it and make

it accessible to the greater cultural community. The MassArt Design and Media Center, due to open

during the 2015-2016 academic year, will be shared by all design and media departments. This will allow

animators to partner with architects, industrial designers with fashion designers, videographers with

illustrators, and countless other multidisciplinary combinations. This growth will provide new studios

and equipment as well as new exhibit and lecture halls.

We strive to give students a place where they can grow into the artist, designer, or educator that

theyve dared to imagine. See if you can envision yourself here; learn more inside, visit our campus,

and contact us with any questions.

    Sincerely,

    The MassArt Admissions Team

MassArt has a long heritage of excellence, as well as an

extremely selective admissions process. We are proud of

our world-class faculty and visiting artists and our state-of-

the-art facilities. Our urban campus, which spans an entire

city block, gives students access to over 1 million square

feet of studio, classroom, living, and exhibition space.

The opportunity to work and create in a diverse community

of innovative, hard-working artists, designers, and educators

fosters a learning environment that encourages multidisci-

plinary practice and dialoguea central value of the graduate

programs at MassArt. This belief, shared across programs,

creates a supportive space in which students can fully develop

    their vision.

In addition to coursework within their studio concentrations,

all graduate students take critical theory coursework with

both a historical and a contemporary focus. These courses

use the art and design communities of Boston and beyond

as the venues for classroom exploration.

The Post-Baccalaureate Dynamic Media Institute (DMI)

program gives students an opportunity to focus on the role,

and possible new uses of dynamic media in communication

design. This program offers professionals from outside the

design field a rigorous educational experience that will prepare

them for new opportunities including application to graduate

schools or study in our Dynamic Media Institutes MFA program.

    The Post-Baccalaureate Media Arts (Photography)

program is an intensive course of study for those seeking an

advanced level of discourse, both technical and theoretical,

about the medium of photography. The program provides an

individualized curriculum for students who wish to develop

their portfolios and skills to prepare for future graduate

school or as an end in itself.

The Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) is intended

for students who have strong undergraduate backgrounds

in studio art and who seek initial licensure as art teachers.

TPP coursework focuses on pedagogical theory as well

as pre-practicum and practicum (fieldwork) experience.

While preparation for initial licensure mandates 150 hours

of student- teaching practicum, MassArt students benefit

from 300+ hours in the classroom.

*Post baccalaureate programs require one year (24 credits) of study and may be adaptable depending on the needs of the individual student.

    ACADEMIC PROGRAMS MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE

    GRADUATE

  • Massachusetts College of Art and Design / 621 Huntington Avenue Boston, MA 02115MassArt.edu

    GRADUATE / MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE

The Master of Architecture program at MassArt combines professional require- ments with hands-on design and build experience in community-based teaching and working spaces.

The program, accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting

Board, provides students with rigorous and accessible professional

preparation for a variety of architecture related careers through

two tracks: Track I, for students with an undergraduate degree not

in architecture (102 credits in 3 years), and Track II, for those with

a B Arch degree (60 credits in 2 years). In their second summer,

Track I students join incoming Track II students to collaborate on

a community-based design then build studio.

Grounded in energy-conscious building and site design, the

coursework promotes conceptual exploration with practical

application in building systems, construction technology, ethical

practice, and cultural traditions in architecture.

Students develop a personal language of form and a responsible

design ethic through the study of current, visionary, historic, and

vernacular architectures, and experimentation with the intrinsic

properties and geometries of materials and building systems.

Critiques by faculty, guests, and visiting design/construction

professionals help students to further refine designs and vision.

Internship Development Program (IDP) counseling is offered

to students preparing for national professional registration.

    MASSART MAKES ME FEARLESS

  • Massachusetts College of Art and Design / 621 Huntington Avenue Boston, MA 02115MassArt.edu

I earned my BFA in Technical Theatre at

Emerson College before I decided to pursue

my Master of Architecture. I want to make

things and thats where both programs

overlap. Actually, I see a definite relationship

between what I learned in my undergrad

and what Ive learned in my program here.

However, because my degree wasnt in

architecture, I began with Track 1 courses to

prepare me for the transitionbut the entire

time, I really felt like I was part of the program

already. After a quick start with the basics,

I was in the thick of it. We took months to

acquire knowledge that might otherwise take

    years to learn.

Because MassArt is a more intimate commu-

nity, you get to know your professors. Discovery

is something you do WITH the facultyand

they dont intimidate you at all.

Overall, this has been a fun environment.

Ive had the freedom to explore and to make

and try things without any expectation of a

particular result. There is a healthy interaction

between all the disciplines and that collabora-

tive spirit has an impact on what we create.

MASSART MAKES YOU FEARLESS / GRADUATE PROGRAM

MassArt gets your hands dirty.Through my program, I was part of a summer design build at Up Academy in Dorchester for three months. The process began with the development of a concept that we further explored in community meetings. Then we developed the practical design and culminated in a practical implementation. It was the perfect environment to apply and solidify the knowledge Ive gained and to put it into real action.

The MFA: 2D Fine Arts program at MassArt fosters independent creative making and thinking.

The two-year (60 credit) MFA: 2D Fine Arts program focuses

on painting and printmaking as specific disciplines but also

encourages the students diverse practice. The program

promotes critical responsiveness and independence and

provides an intense working environment within which each

student can pursue their own direction.

The foundation of the program is the critique. In addition

to individual critiques, each student will present their work for

discussion with peers and faculty on a weekly basis. The goal

is to foster a critical dialogue at various stages of the students

    MASSART MAKES ME FEARLESS

  • Massachusetts College of Art and Design / 621 Huntington Avenue Boston, MA 02115MassArt.edu

When I first came to MassArt, I was working

primarily with paint, but later transitioned

to working in a more interdisciplinary way.

I think the 2D Fine Arts program offers great

discipline-based programs, but there is also

a strong interdisciplinary core that runs

    through everything. My graduate program

is diverse, and theres a lot of open dialoga

great balance of different backgrounds and

viewpoints, on top of the experience of a

    shared community.

The faculty is a big part of the draw here

for me, too. They are extremely supportive

and invested in your personal development

and they go out of their way to make them-

selves available. I actually hope to teach

myself, someday, in addition to establishing

    my studio practice.

I think MassArt is a vibrant part of the Boston

landscape. This place is rich with artistic and

educational historythe Museum of Fine Arts,

the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, all the

    collegesbut were changing and evolving

all the time, too. The school brings in lots of

visiting artists who are active in their fields,

as well, and I find they bring a real freshness

    to the community.

The MFA: 3D Fine Arts (Fibers, General, Metals) program at MassArt allows students to work in ceramics, fibers, glass, jewelry and metalsmithing, sculpture, or across combined mediums.

The two-year (60 credit) MFA: 3D Fine Arts (Fibers, General,

Metals) program enables students to explore and embrace

their own philosophy and style; they may work with traditional

materials and processes or create technology-driven objects

using kinetic, interactive, video, or electronic elements. The

program fosters rigorous experimentation, investigation and

research of personal iconography and ideas, cross-disciplinary

    work, and collaboration.

Students engage in fine arts, art history, and critical theory

courses and meet with curators and artists at galleries and

museums. They also choose a studio mentor from the college-

wide faculty to work closely with them throughout their

residency in the program. A thesis exhibition in the Colleges

main gallery and an oral presentation mark the culmination

    of each students studies.

In addition to individual studio space, students have access to

The Master of Arts: Teaching/Art Education program at MassArt provides artists with the skills and training to foster a thriving art community where students are inspired to keep studio practices at the core of the educational experience.

The Master of Arts: Teaching/Art Education program (36 credits)

prepares students to earn an Initial Teacher License in Massa-

chusetts, while also providing the Masters level coursework

requirements for a Professional Teaching License. This is the

optimal program for students who possess a strong background

in studio work and want to teach in PK-12 public or private

schools, museums, social service, or community agencies.

In addition to their coursework, students visit schools, teach

in Saturday Studios, and student-teach during a semester-long

practicum. While classic preparation for the Initial License

mandates a minimum of 150 hours of student teaching, MassArt

    expects 300+ of classroom involvement.

The Initial Teacher License is granted by the State of Massa-

chusetts for a single leveleither Pre-Kindergarten through

Grade 8 or Grade 5 through Grade 12. Students usually complete

the 36-credit MAT/AE program in 4 semesters, 9 credits per

department for a small bike manufacturer

in Boston. I even cooked for a couple of

years. I had something else in mind for the

    rest of my life, though.

Id gotten a bit of a taste for teaching when

I trained people at the bike company so I

decided to pursue it full-time. MassArt had

made a great impression on me when I visited

friends here, and it seemed like the right place

to start that new path. Now that Im here,

Im thrilled with my choice; every aspect of

the school has exceeded my expectations.

For me, the faculty is a big part of what

makes my program so exceptional. They

have an incredible depth of experience with

different age groups and different environ-

mentsand because of that, they can offer

insight and practical advice that you wont

    get from most college professors.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS MFA: DESIGN [THE DYNAMIC MEDIA INSTITUTE (DMI)]

    GRADUATE

  • Massachusetts College of Art and Design / 621 Huntington Avenue Boston, MA 02115MassArt.edu

The MFA: Design [The Dynamic Media Institute (DMI)] program at MassArt explores the role and possibilities of dynamic media in communication design.

The 60-credit DMI MFA enables students to pursue their

thesis through a rigorous practice of research, prototyping,

and writing. With the support of peers, faculty, advisors, and

critics, their practice will culminate in a rich body of original

work and a comprehensive written thesis document.

Thesis topics range from interface design, interactive

environments, learning applications, and data visualization

to participatory narrative, sound and video installation,

smart objects, and much more. Students matriculate with

a new body of work, skills, and experience, equipped to

become a leading educator, practitioner, or entrepreneur.

The program is offered in three tracks: a two-year track in

four semesters, a three-year track in five semesters, or a three-

year track in six semesters. The only difference between the

tracks is the distribution of elective credits. DMI also offers a

one-year fellowship non-matriculating track to which students

may be accepted, based on their specific project proposal.

Admission to the DMI program is highly selective, enrolling

just eight to ten students each year.

its one of the top programs in the country of

The three-year (60 credit) MFA (Low Residency): Fine Arts

(Boston) is an ideal choice for working artists or educators who

bring a strong sense of self-direction to their learning journey.

Students develop an independent body of work which could

Six-week summer residencies in Boston immerse students in

an intense studio environment and foster creative collabora-

continually encouraged to contribute to the campus community

in ways that make a difference.

Student Leadership provides an opportunity to develop

new skills, make new friends, and connect with the MassArt

community. Student Leadership positions are awarded based

on a students resume, interview, and group experience. There

are 22 different leadership positions available through a

centralized hiring process such as Resident Assistants, Tour

Guides, Peer Mentors, International Global Mentors, Orientation

    Primers, and Student Gallery Managers.

The Student Government Association (SGA) at MassArt

enhances the undergraduate student experience by providing

a platform through which their voices may be heard. Through

open meetings, students can promote and advance matters

concerning their community and link with faculty and adminis-

tration. In addition to acting as a framework that other student

organizations build upon, SGA ensures the continued advance-

ment of an engaging student experience.

Student Organizations connect students based on shared

interests in professional, social, and cultural activities. For a
