As I begin my second year as President of St. Francis Prep, we commemorate the 40th Anniversary of our re-location from North 6th Street in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn to Francis Lewis Boulevard in Fresh Meadows, Queens.

In fact, September 1974 marked a very historic occasion not only because of the move from Brooklyn to Queens but because for the very first time the Prep would admit young women—becoming a major co-educational institution that would soon be the nation’s largest private Catholic high school (a distinction we maintain today).

So many things have happened in the past 40 years. Some highlights:

Fall 1974St. Francis Prep relocates to Francis Lewis Boulevard in Fresh Meadows, Queens, and women are admitted for the first time.

1982St. Francis Prep institutes the Honorary Alumni program. There are now 86 Honorary Alumni of the school (non-graduates whose service has earned them this special recognition).

1983St. Francis Prep celebrates its 125th Anniversary and earns the U.S. Department of Education’s Excellence in Private Education Award.

May 1995St. Francis Prep initiates Our Vision for the Future Endowment Campaign which eventually raises more than $4 million.

1999St. Francis Prep is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as an “Outstanding American High School” and dedicates the Wall of Recognition to honor the graduates, parents and friends who have made an investment in the Endowment Fund. This year also marks the start of an incredible streak of 12 out of 15 years (including 10 consecutive years) in which Prep students are named semi-finalists in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search—making the Prep the only high school in the nation to achieve this level of success in this competition.

May 2000St. Francis Prep dedicates the Alumni Hall of Fame. Today there are 77 members.

November 2005Coach Vince O’Connor achieves his 300th varsity football victory in the CHSAA championship game played at Hofstra against St. Peter’s Boys H.S. (This fall 2014 season will be Coach O’Connor’s 60th at the helm of the Terriers.)

April 2006St. Francis Prep establishes its Alumni “Professional Chapter” network with an inaugural event on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. This network now includes local Alumni Chapters for Financial Services, Legal, Health Care, Education and the Arts. (The out-of-town Alumni Chapter network has now grown to include Florida, the Philadelphia area, the Boston area, the Washington D.C. area, and Arizona.)

October 2008St. Francis Prep celebrates its Sesquicentennial (150th Anniversary) with a Mass at St. James Cathedral and a Gala Event at the Brooklyn Marriott while “kicking-off” year-long commemorative activities as well as The Campaign for St. Francis Prep to help fund the school’s major capital improvement and modernization program (which continues today). More than $5 million is raised in Stage One of the campaign.

September 2011St. Francis Prep dedicates the new Coach Vince O’Connor Physical Education and Athletic Training Center and The Art Education Center and announces plans to conduct Stage Two of The Campaign for St. Francis Prep (with a goal of $10 million) to help fund the construction of new Science and Music facilities (2014-15). Stage Two of the campaign continues through 2015. September 2013St. Francis Prep institutes a new administrative model as Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. becomes the first-ever President of the school (following 30 years as Principal) with Patrick J. McLaughlin ‘73 becoming the Principal. This represents a natural progression for the Prep as it looks to build upon past success and prepare for The Next 150.

CONTENTS

October 2013The Prep’s Girls Tennis Team, led by Coach John Brennan, wins the CHSAA State Championship for an incredible 16th consecutive time. (The team has more than 200 consecutive victories--an amazing accomplishment!)

The “Friends of St. Francis Prep Football” hold their inaugural scholarship fundraiser at the New York Stock Exchange. (The Prep now has 30 named scholarship funds that provide financial awards and assistance to many deserving students each year.)

March 2014St. Francis Prep establishes its Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor (Athletic Hall of Fame) with 68 inductees who are honored at an Inaugural Gala at Crest Hollow Country Club. Included among the inductees are Vince Lombardi, Joe Torre, Vince O’Connor, Tim Leary, Joanne Persico, Jane Modry and Bro. Robert Kent. More than 700 attend the Gala. (Right around this time both Tim Leary and Bro. Robert Kent achieved their 600th varsity victories in basketball and baseball respectively.)

TodaySt. Francis Prep is the largest private Catholic secondary school in the United States. The Prep is registered with the Board of Regents of New York State, a recipient of the U. S. Department of Education’s “Excellence in Private Education” award, and recognized by U.S. News and World Report® as an Outstanding American High School. St. Francis Prep is also accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and it is the first-ever school to have received the special Music Credential from this Middle States Association (in recognition of our wonderful, award-winning music program).

And most importantly perhaps, ninety-nine percent of the graduating seniors go on to the college of their choice each year, and there are over 25,000 proud alumni!

In closing, I want to thank you for everything you do for this great school and ask that you please stay in touch with your Alma Mater and your classmates. You are “Ambassadors” for St. Francis Prep and you are always welcome here. You are an important part of a proud history which spans more than 150 years and I hope you will continue to be an integral part of the school’s future as well.

On for Ol’ St. Francis!

Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. President

Annual President’s Dinner • April 2014

Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. hosted the Annual President’s Dinner on Saturday, April,5, 2014 in the Prep’s library. More than 150 guests were in attendance. This annual event is the Prep’s salute to the loyal alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends whose generosity at the “leadership” giving level helped St. Francis Prep in many wonderful ways during the past year. As alumni dined, Bro. Leonard, who is currently in his first year in his new role as president, delivered an update on all of the latest developments at the Prep. Patrick McLaughlin ‘73, provided an overview on the many academic achievements of our students in his first year as Prep’s Principal. During dinner, two seniors, Karina Miranda ‘14 (University of Pennsylvania) and Arianna Kahn‘14 (Harvard University), spoke about their wonderful experiences at Prep and all that SFP provided them as they head off to college in the fall. As it has been the tradition for several years, the St. Francis Prep String Orchestra, under the direction of Robert Johnston, impressed and delighted guests with an hour-long performance.

Walk-a-thon Raises $285,000 for PrepOn Friday, September 27th, St. Francis Prep hosted its third annual Walk-a-thon fundraising event. The proceeds of this event will benefit special projects and programs at the Prep, most notably the current Capital Improvement and Modernization Project. As you know, we already constructed new Physical Education and Art Education Centers. Additional phases of this modernization program will continue over the next several years, and new Science and Music facilities are our immediate priority. This Walk-a-thon fundraising event is very important as we plan for the Prep’s financial future and the need to insure that we are always providing our students with an outstanding education in the Franciscan tradition. Thanks to everyone for their participation and support!

Mass of Remembrance & Brunch•2013The Annual

Each year, during the month of November, we remember and pray for all of the deceased in our community. Together we seek strength and comfort as we continue our journey of healing and reflection. At this Mass, we pray especially for all those who we have lost during the past year. (See list below.) All are welcome to join us on Sunday, November 2, 2014. This will provide us with an opportunity to bless the new and existing memorials on the Pathway to St. Francis as well as our Wall of Honor in the gym. After all of our ceremonies conclude, a brunch will be served in the school cafeteria.

On Monday, June 16, 2014 the 21st Annual Golf Classic was held at Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, NY. After more than 170 golfers played on a superb course and enjoyed an outstanding cocktail hour, nearly 300 guests dined on a delicious buffet dinner as we honored two outstanding individuals: Jack Cahill ‘67 and Ted Jahn H’09. Each of them spoke of their great affection for St. Francis Prep. We also had the great pleasure of honoring our beloved Baseball Coach Brother Robert Kent on his 600th

Career Win. The net proceeds of the event benefit the Prep’s scholarship program and we are grateful to the Golf Committee and all of our sponsors, golfers and friends for their continued support.

Hoops Tournament in Memory of Jimmy ‘79 & James Prendergast H’11

The 4th Annual Golf Outing in memory of Danny Apicella ‘00 will be held at Clearview Golf Course on Friday, October 3, 2014. The “after party” will continue at Sullivan’s in Bayside with drink specials and plenty of raffle prizes in a “standing room only” crowd. All told, nearly $30,000 has been raised in support of the Scholarship Fund established in Danny’s memory.

Homecoming Weekend brings alumni together from a variety of ages to celebrate old memories of St. Francis Prep, and to make new ones! See the back cover for the 2014 Homecoming Weekend schedule of events.

Annual Homecoming Weekend

The “weekend” begins on Thursday evening with a Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament. Last year over one hundred alumni, members of the Prendergast family as well as friends from the neighborhood participated on October 3rd. As always, there will be food, drink and plenty of raffle prizes awarded. Photos from this past year are shown below. This year the event will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2014 in the Prep’s Gym.

Over the past few months there have been some exciting new developments with regard to the upcoming Phase III of the Prep’s Capital Improvement and Modernization Program. As you probably know, Phase III will involve the creation of new, state-of-the-art science and music facilities along with new student athletic lockers and a dance studio. (Phase I of the program resulted in a completely upgraded infrastructure and Phase II resulted in our wonderful Physical Fitness and Art Education facilities.) Originally, the Phase III program called for a new building to house science and music (and the new lockers and dance studio). However, upon reviewing construction bids and after careful consideration by the Administration and Board of Trustees this spring, it became very clear that it would make a great deal more sense to utilize existing spaces to achieve the same, if not a better result: Modern, spacious, technologically sound, student-friendly science and music facilities that will be second-to-none in the metropolitan area.

The cost savings alone made this a “no-brainer” for the Prep, but when it became apparent that by going this different route the new science and music facilities could be even more “eye-catching” than we ever dreamed of here, there was no turning back. In fact, the plans are so exciting that the administration is now fast-tracking the process.

Early this past summer, Phase III of the Modernization Program officially began with the complete dismantling, re-designing and re-construction of the science labs and related facilities on the east side of the school complex. These new facilities will be ready for the Fall semester. Work on the labs and the other science related areas on the west side of the

complex will follow in the hope that they too can be utilized by our students during this current Fall semester.

Construction of the new music facilities (and other components of the Phase III plan) will follow in 2015 with the end result being a spectacular series of highly advanced learning, practice and performance spaces for two award-winning programs (science and music) that deserve only the best. As these plans unfold in the weeks ahead we will be sure to keep you informed. And, The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150 (Stage Two of our Capital Campaign that benefits this Modernization Program) will continue through 2015, turning soon to the entire Prep community (alumni, parents, friends) to achieve our goals. With your help we will succeed! Thank you for your continued support.

Saturday, May 3, 2014 • The Annual Spring Reunion and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony once again provided a great opportunity to rediscover what made St. Francis Prep “a second home” for so many—the friends, faculty, coaches and great Terrier spirit. The Hall of Fame honors graduates who have demonstrated significant lifetime achievement and service to others. This year’s inductees were: John Hemmer ‘61, Vincent Pitta ‘68 and Kyle Flood ‘89.

The Classes of 1964, 1959, 1954, 1949 and 1944 were recognized as the newest members of the Golden Terrier Society— an honor bestowed upon alumni who have celebrated the 50th, 55th, 60th, 65th and 70th anniversary of their graduation. The group was presented with special medals and enjoyed a festive reunion dinner in the library. The 25th anniversary class of 1989 enjoyed their reunion celebration in the cafeteria along with the Classes of 1984, 1979, 1974 and 1969.

St. Francis Preparatory School • GRAD NEWS 201430

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Throughout its long history, St. Francis Prep has always demonstrated an unmistakable and unwavering commitment to excellence in education, and this dedication has consistently produced, over the years, its share of outstanding students. The remarkable accomplishments of these students never cease to amaze and edify even the most casual observer. So, it is no surprise that this year such benchmark results have been replicated by the students of St. Francis Prep in the fields of the sciences, music, art and athletics, even while at the same time leaving a legacy of benevolent and charitable works of service to the community, in the spirit of St. Francis himself.

While there are virtually no surprises in the area of student accomplishments, since this has become a normative event, surprises abound in the area of school administration, as new and unprecedented events unfold, producing a different administrative model of leadership in the school, for the first time in its history. After thirty years as principal, Brother Leonard Conway H’01, has assumed the role of President, while Mr. Patrick McLaughlin ‘73 has become the first lay principal of the school. Both men have already made significant strides in adjusting to their new roles, and it is everyone’s hope that this initial success will only continue over the coming years, producing a new and refined vision for the future of the school. We wish them every success in their partnership and anticipate that their joint efforts will serve the school community well, enhancing what is already a well-established reputation.

It goes without saying that significant challenges loom on the horizon as St. Francis Prep sets its goal to educate its students in a world environment emphatically defined by so many advancements in technology and the arts. But in truth, an institution that does not accept challenges is bound to miss the success to which it aspires, and can only rely on its past reputation so long. It is by facing the future with courage, wisdom and conviction, all qualities already associated with the Prep, that a new age of education can be ushered in. Those who are aware of the profound impact that a Franciscan education has on young and impressionable minds can only expect a continued dedication to the ideals that the four golden links represent and an openness to the challenges that the future entails.

But in the face of all this innovation, St. Francis Prep will never abandon its traditional commitment to build young

men and women of character, those who will excel in their academic fields of expertise as well as giving back to the community which nurtured them.

On October 4th, we celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi with a liturgy celebrated by Bishop Raymond Chappetto. He offered a special blessing of the new President, Brother Leonard and the new Principal, Pat McLaughlin during the liturgy. We also honored Brother Lawrence Boyle, O.S.F. on the occasion of his 50th Anniversary as a Franciscan Brother. The Canticle Citation Award was presented to Mary Niklaus, Mary Ann Spicijaric and Sandi Vandermosten for 25 Years of Service. Brother Lawrence Boyle, O.S.F., Kevin Colucci, Eric Hafker, Donna Mejia, and Robert Williams were recognized for their 15 Years of Service. At the Liturgy, the Principal’s Award for 25 Years of Service was presented to Sofia Eide.

I would like to take the time to formally acknowledge those individuals who have contributed so much of themselves to our students, and who have now decided to retire to greener pastures, after their years of service to the school. On behalf of the school community, I would like to thank:Brother Alan Zodda H’05, for his forty-eight years of service as a Social Studies teacher, an assistant to the Physical Education Department, and as a legendary coach of our great handball teams; Mr. Ted Jahn H’09, for his thirty-six years as Assistant Principal and Director of Admissions; Mrs. MaryEllen Bechtle, for her service as a teacher and Chairperson of the Religious Education Department for the past twenty-four years; Mrs. Maureen Logan, “Miss Congeniality”, for her twenty-eight years of service as an administrative assistant in the Guidance Department.

We certainly recognize the magnitude and variety of the contributions made by each of these truly inspiring individuals, but if we had to highlight the one factor that they all had in common, it would doubtless be their generosity of spirit and willingness to go the extra mile, their willingness to give everything for the good of those they served. Their beneficence was never measured out in small dosages. It was, rather, poured out lavishly.

Let us bid them a fond farewell. Now it is time for them to smell the proverbial roses.

On a new note, on Saturday, March 15, a ceremony marking the inauguration of the Red and Blue Terrier Ring of Honor was held. The fundamental reason this organization was formed was to recognize the outstanding

achievements of our past athletes, coaches, moderators and athletic directors, as well as others who have contributed their athletic talents to the Prep. It is because of men and women such as these that the reputation of the school has been enhanced and Franciscan spirit has been extended beyond the confines of the school itself. So, it was only fitting that their contribution finally be honored through the establishment of this new organization. We at the Prep salute them and thank them for giving so much to their alma mater. Incidentally, the actual event proved quite memorable, as close to 750 people gathered to pay tribute to our athletic giants of the past. We will forever be grateful to them and will continue to honor them in the future, as this event naturally develops into a Prep tradition.

Considering the quality of the students it produces, the dedication of its faculty, staff and administration, the self-less contribution of outstanding role-model type athletes, all of which we have made an attempt to highlight, it is natural to seek to guarantee that such a tour de force of positive spirit continue into the distant future. The only way to make this happen is through your unfailing support and generosity. Without your concrete support, the future is just a dream. With your support, the dream becomes a reality.

Support of the Prep from alumni and alumnae comes in various shapes and sizes. To show support, one can certainly go the traditional route and make a monetary gift to the Prep, and this will help to fund so many of the on-going programs that develop the whole person, intellect, body and spirit. But this is not the only way to show support.

One can also choose the option of attending one of the many alumni-sponsored events held throughout the year. This would provide the opportunity to rub elbows with old friends and renew acquaintances.

In conclusion, let it be known that I am ever grateful to the members of the Alumni Board, for all their tireless efforts on behalf of the school. I do not hesitate to publicly thank them for their support and dedication.

May the blessing of St. Francis be upon you, your family and your friends, now and all the days of your life.

In gratitude,

Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F.

Our cover theme was about the arrival of the “Girls” at Prep 40 years ago. With this in mind, we dedicate this issue of GradNews to the memory of Jane Modry H’00, former Girls Athletic Director, whose passing occurred as we were preparing this issue for press. May she rest in peace.

Neil A. Carousso, SFP Class of 2013, a sophomore at Hofstra University covered the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown for WRHU-FM. He did a live show from radio row at the induction ceremony site called the “75th National Baseball Hall of Fame LIVE Special.” Neil was able to get a photo (below) with Joe and expressed his hopes that Joe would come back and visit Prep sometime soon!

Congratulations to Joe Torre, SFP Class of 1958. Joe was unanimously elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the 16-member Veterans Committee on December 9, 2013. He was inducted on July 27, 2014.

As many alumni may recall, Sr. Marguerite Torre, Joe’s sister, taught Spanish at the Prep! Also, Joe’s son, Michael Torre, is a member of the SFP Class of 1982.

A gallery of photos of Joe from his Prep baseball days and visits with members of the Prep administration were posted on the St. Francis Preparatory School Facebook page. They met with an overwhelmingly positive response. Scores of comments were posted, they received hundreds of “likes” and “share”. All told, the posts were seen by more 20,000 people! “There’s a great deal of love for Joe Torre and a lot of Prep pride out there!”, Alumni Director Bro. Robert Kent said.

From: Michele Bachoon Sent: Tuesday, December 17, 2013

My brother Shaun Francis Sammy is an alumnus of Prep, [Class of 2002]. In fact he wanted to eventually return to Prep and teach. It was his dream. I’m sad to say that in January of this year he was diagnosed with a very rare form of brain cancer, Medulla Blastoma. Shaun fought hard and went through several surgeries, extensive chemotherapy and proton radiation to no avail. He finished his last treatment in October. In November another hospital visit gave us the worst news. Unfortunately, there is nothing else the doctors can do. The Cancer did not react enough to the treatment and continued to spread. Shaun is now in Hospice and is not expected to last very much longer. I believe I have seen in the alumni newsletter, little blurbs about other alums who have died. I wanted to know if you could do something similar for Shaun. He just moved down to Florida December 2012 and had a horrible year. He missed New York and Prep a lot. We have not lost him yet, but he is not doing well.

Thank you,Michele Bachoon (Class of 1995)

Regrettably, Shaun passed away two days later:

Shaun Francis Sammy passed away peacefully in the late morning of December 19, 2013 at age 29. He battled aggressive brain cancer for almost a year before succumbing to the disease. Shaun is survived by his parents Cassandra and Kenny Sammy and siblings Michele and Michael. Also survived by his nieces, Lily and Anjelica and many aunts, uncles and cousins who will miss him dearly. He was born in New York on February 25, 1984. He graduated high school from Saint Francis Preparatory where he wanted to return as a teacher. Shaun also wanted to be a writer and his very first script, Miracle of Dunkirk was a finalist at the 2012 Long Island International Film Expo.

As a gradu-ate, Connor will serve his country by sailing in the maritime industry and he will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve.

T.J. Stackpole 2013 was only six years old when his father, FDNY Capt. Timothy Stackpole ‘77, died on September 11, 2001. Dr. Robert Corbino of the Music department, was featured in School Band Orchestra’s Report “2013’s 50 Directors Who Make a Difference”. “Doc”, as he is affectionately known, is starting his 39th year with SFP! He said, “My proudest moments as an educator are having the St. Francis Prep Music Department become the first ever to be awarded the Music Credential from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools; having the school’s ensembles perform for three Papal visits; having the band perform for (the American) hostages who were released from Iran (1982); and having our ensembles perform on tour in England and Italy.

Congratulations to SFP Handball Coach Tony Grimm and his team on winning the City Championship 12 years in a row, and for going undefeated for the past two years. They have overcome many challenges. Two years ago the CHSAA changed from playing with a small ball to a large ball just three days before the 2012 season started. “Big ball and small ball are two different sports,” said Grimm, in a 2012 NY Post interview. It led to some quick adjustments, but it didn’t keep our Terriers from winning.

Online GivingGifts made with a credit card help the Prep benefit almost immediately. You may donate to Prep using your American Express, MasterCard, Visa or Discover Card on the St. Francis Prep Alumni Website at: alumni.sfponline.org. (Click on the “Donate to the Prep” menu item.)

Check or Money OrderIf you wish to make your gift by check or money order, kindly forward it to: St. Francis Preparatory School, Office of Development, 6100 Francis Lewis Boulevard, Fresh Meadows, NY 11361. Checks or money orders should be made payable to St. Francis Prep.

Pledged GiftYou may pledge a gift and arrange convenient payment installments. Later this year you will be asked to consider your “pledged” support for the campaign to help fund the Prep’s modernization program.

Gifts of Stocks and BondsDonating appreciated securities is another way of helping Prep while also providing potential tax advantages for you. For example: If you purchased stock many years ago for $1,000, and it is now worth $10,000, an outright gift of that stock to St. Francis Prep would result in a charitable deduction of $10,000. You also avoid paying capital gains tax on the $9,000 of appreciation. For further information on how to transfer stock, please call Robert Angeletti at (718) 423-8810, ext. 269.

Corporate Matching GiftsMany employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees, and in many cases, even retirees and/or spouses. A matching gift allows your donation to go further. If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your company’s Benefits department. Complete and sign the form and send it in with your gift. We will do the rest.

Gifts of any size are appreciated and will help make a Prep education more affordable for a deserving student. There are many ways to offer your support:
